1. David Jackson: New Book of Interest
From: David Jackson <djackson22@verizon.net>
Hi Yair,
I was wondering if you are familiar with a book published this year titled
"Coincidences in the Bible and in Biblical Hebrew" by Haim Shore. Mr. Shore
is a professor of Engineering at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev.
In this book he provides many instances in which scientific information
seems to be embedded in the Hebrew language, as well as unusual
'coindidences' that can be found in the Bible. It is not about the Bible
Code or Gematria.
Some examples are:
- The Hebrew word for "ear", OZEN, derives from the same root as balance,
AZN. Only in the 1870s did science realize that the sense of balance was
contained within the ear.
- The Divine name in both Hebrew (YHVH) and English (GOD), have equal
numeric values: Y=10 H=5 V=6 H=5 is 26 and in English the ordinal values of
the letters are G=7 O=15 D=4, or 26.
- In chapter 9 of the Book of Esther, the 10 sons of Haman (who had sought
to exterminate the Jews) were killed by Jews who had risen up against Haman
and his forces. Later the Persian King asks Esther what should be done in
retaliation to Haman for his transgressions and, strangely, she asks that
*tomorrow* the 10 sons on Haman should be hanged (they were already dead).
After WW2 exactly 10 Nazis were hanged after the Nuremburg war trials,
implying that the execution of these later 10 completed her prophetic
request and that Hitler was spiritually equivalent to Haman.
- The name Hamas, the self-chosen name of the Palestinian terrorist group,
in Hebrew is rendered as Chamas, which means to unjustly seize someone
else's property. It even means that in Arabic, implying that the
Palestinians know they are at fault and are comfortable with that.
- The name Laban means white. White is now known to really be a mixture of
all colors in the spectrum. They can be separated by a prism. Laban is a
negative character in the Bible. In fact his name spelled backwards in
Hebrew means villain. More significantly, Laban was representative of
unwholesome mixture in all his actions. Some examples: Laban mixes Leah
and Rachael to trick Jacob, thereby implying that he thinks his own children
are merely interchangeable commodities. He swears by the both the name of
the God of Abraham and Nachor (Nachor worshipped idols), thereby mixing
religions. Laban attempts to prevent distinctions between his own cattle
and Jacob's, thereby trying to mix private property to his advantage.
Many more topics are covered. I thought I would pass this along to you and
Brit-Am readers in case they might be interested in it.

2. Dave Jackson: Eber to Abraham
and Hebrew
From: David Jackson <djackson22@verizon.net>
I am not sure if this is an original insight or not, but it occurred to me and I
thought I would share it.
Abraham and his descendants through Isaac and Jacob are generally called
Hebrews, for example in Jonah 1:9 Jonah refers to himself as a Hebrew.
A review of the patriarchal line from Noah to Jacob shows:
Noah
Shem
Arphaxad
Salah
Eber
Peleg
Reu
Serug
Nahor
Terah
Abraham
Isaac
Jacob (renamed Israel)
Each of these names down to Abraham is presumably the firstborn of their father,
since when Isaac and Jacob are not the firstborn it is noted.
Gen 10:25 says that in Peleg's time the earth was divided, and again in 10:32
the earth was said to be divided among Noah's descendants. There are 70 sons
and grandsons from Japheth, Shem and Ham, among whom Peleg is one. According to
tradition, 70 nations and language groups divided out from Babel to populate the
earth.
The tower of Babel incident is recorded in Gen 11:1-9, followed by a resumption
of the genealogies beginning at verse 10.
Given that 6 generations occurred from Eber to Abraham, I wondered why Abraham
and the descendants of his birthright (Isaac, Jacob, and the 12 tribes of
Israel) would call themselves "Hebrews" since presumably many other descendants
from Peleg, Reu, Serug, etc. would be equally justified in calling themselves
that.
It seems that the firstborn, or least the child who receives the birthright,
takes the name of the patriarch. For example, God tells Abraham that in Isaac
shall his seed be called. Isaac then was the lineal descendant of Eber who had
the greatest claim to Eber's name. From Isaac it devolved to Jacob (who
purchased the birthright from Esau) and to Jacob's 12 sons, who are collectively
called Hebrews. From then on Israel was considered one nation, made up of 12
tribes.
It then occurred to me that Peleg was probably blessed with one advantage that
the other nations did not have. When God divided the languages, the records
written to that point would have been comprehended by only one of the 70. Only
one of the 70 could read the written accounts of the creation, the fall, the
flood, and so on.
Eber spoke the common language of all mankind prior to Babel. Peleg his son
continued to speak it and so transmitted the accounts to Reu, and down to
Abraham. The language of Eber, Hebrew, would therefore be the original language
of mankind.
God's original words were preserved through Eber and Peleg down to Abraham.
Other nations would be less likely to have accurate memories of the pre-flood
world because they only had oral traditions to rely on. Uniquely, the nations
from Peleg Ebers son could read the written accounts. Other nations eventually
developed (or were perhaps immediately given at Babel) a written language and
they may have copied the old accounts into their language, but this would likely
have been imperfect, if it happened at all.
Related individuals, such as Abraham's bother Haran would have also spoke Hebrew
of course, but the important point is that Abraham did.
Logically any of the 70 nations could have retained the original language and
preserved God's word, but given that Abraham's was selected to be his witness,
it seems highly likely that Providence would have ensured that he obtained the
source documents describing creation in their original language.
