The Assyrians-Chaldeans are the Christians of Iraq. Many speak Aramaic dialects. They are thought to more closely represent the populations of Mesopotamia since the Muslim Iraqis have greater Arab and other admixtures.

Genetics
Late 20th century DNA analysis conducted by Cavalli-Sforza, Paolo Menozzi and Alberto Piazza, "shows that Assyrians have a distinct genetic profile that distinguishes their population from any other population."[76] Genetic analysis of the Assyrians of Persia demonstrated that they were "closed" with little "intermixture" with the Muslim Persian population and that an individual Assyrian's genetic makeup is relatively close to that of the Assyrian population as a whole.[77] Cavalli-Sforza et al. state in addition, "[T]he Assyrians are a fairly homogeneous group of people, believed to originate from the land of old Assyria in northern Iraq", and "they are Christians and are possibly bona fide descendants of their namesakes."[78] "The genetic data are compatible with historical data that religion played a major role in maintaining the Assyrian population's separate identity during the Christian era".[76]

2. DNA Evidence: Most West Europeans Derives from Middle East Ancestors!

Brit-Am Preliminary Note:
The article quoted below bases itself on a recent study.
It says that the DNA of most males in Western Europe may be traced back to Anatolia meaning present-day Turkey
but in fact it is relevant also Syria and the Middle East in general.
It also says that they arrived in the Neolothic [New Stone Age] Period. This is based on supposition. No reliable Y (male specific) DNA samples exist that date back (in a few cases) more than ca. 3000 years and in most cases ca. 1000 years at the most since YDNA decays relatively quickly.

A Predominantly Neolithic Origin for European Paternal Lineages

Most present-day European men inherited their Y chromosomes from the farmers who spread from the Near East 10,000 years ago, rather than from the hunter-gatherers of the Paleolithic.

Abstract
he relative contributions to modern European populations of Paleolithic hunter-gatherers and Neolithic farmers from the Near East have been intensely debated. Haplogroup R1b1b2 (R-M269) is the commonest European Y-chromosomal lineage, increasing in frequency from east to west, and carried by 110 million European men. Previous studies suggested a Paleolithic origin, but here we show that the geographical distribution of its microsatellite diversity is best explained by spread from a single source in the Near East via Anatolia during the Neolithic. Taken with evidence on the origins of other haplogroups, this indicates that most European Y chromosomes originate in the Neolithic expansion. This reinterpretation makes Europe a prime example of how technological and cultural change is linked with the expansion of a Y-chromosomal lineage, and the contrast of this pattern with that shown by maternally inherited mitochondrial DNA suggests a unique role for males in the transition.

3. Many Inhabitants of Latakia (Northern Syria) descend from West European Crusaders!!!

-near-east-during.html

Long ago during the '70s, I drove my BMW from London all the way to Beirut in preparation for a diplomatic assignment [learning Arabic] at the US Embassy in Beirut [parenthetically just before it was blown up] and the FSI Language Center moved to Tunisia]. At the Turkish/Syrian border, I was asked by two Syrian officials to give them a ride to Latakia. I did so and while taking them to the city center, remarked on how tall, blond, and blue-eyed almost all of the populace was.
The two officials, who were Syrian intelligence agents, told me that a large percentage of Latakia's inhabitants were descendants of Christian crusaders who had decided not to return to Europe. Many had even kept their status as Musahiyiin or became members o the Alawite [semi-Shi'ite] sect which currently runs Syria and is centered in the hills around Latakia.
I don't think the Syrian regime would want to allow much scholarship on the genetics of Crusader descendants because of the info above and the fragility of the Alawite Assad Family's hold on the reins of power in Syria.
