I was reading your difficulties to interpret the DNA analyses.
I was working on that field for several years on plants and know a few of them that are working in that field here in Iceland with human genes.
I had difficulty in understanding the real difference between some probes of haploid I and J (and why we don't find any J here in Iceland). So I took time to go there and discuss it with somebody I know. The only thing I can say is that this story is not as clean as it should be.

YDNA Haplogroup J is found in ca. 30% of Jewish males.
Amongst Cohens it reaches to ca. 80%. Cohens comprise the Priestly Caste and membership is inherited through the father.
It is therefore assumed that the Cohens represent the least intermixed group of Jews.
There are two main divisions of J: J1 is associated with Arabs; J2 is found amongst Jews, and others.
# The highest ever reported concentration of J2 was 72% in Northeastern Georgia.[21]. Other high reports include Ingush 32% [21], Cypriots 30-37% (Capelli 2005), Lebanese 30% (Wells et al. 2001), Iraqis 29.7% (Sanchez et al. 2005), Syrians 22.5%[citation needed], Kurds 24%-28%, Iranians 23%[22], Ashkenazi Jews 24%, Palestinian Arabs 16.8%-25%, Sephardic Jews 29%[2] and North Indian Shia Muslims 18% [1], Chechens 26%, Balkars 24%, Yaghnobis 32%, Armenians 21-24%, and Azerbaijanis 24%-48%. #
Haplogroup J is similar to Haplogroup I and overlaps with it.

There are different subclades of Haplogroup I.
The type that is dominant in northern Europe are different from those in the
Balkans etc.
I and J are two versions of the same group.
The proportion of I in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, England, Iceland, Finland
parallels the proportion of J amongst Jews.
There may or may not be significance in this parallelism.
The Brit-Am belief that certain populations in the north are descended from
Israel from a DNA point of view is seen to be more feasible when the identity
between I and J is taken into account.
