[Daniel 12:1] AND AT THAT TIME SHALL
MICHAEL STAND UP, THE GREAT PRINCE WHICH
STANDETH
FOR THE CHILDREN OF THY PEOPLE: AND THERE SHALL BE A TIME OF TROUBLE, SUCH AS
NEVER WAS SINCE THERE WAS A NATION EVEN TO THAT SAME TIME: AND AT THAT TIME THY
PEOPLE SHALL BE DELIVERED, EVERY ONE THAT SHALL BE FOUND WRITTEN IN THE BOOK.
AT THAT TIME. Just before the Final Redemption.
Michael represents the Children of Israel in the Heavenly Court.
In Chapter 10 we quoted a Commentary that regards Michael and Gabriel as two
aspects of the one entity.

In general Michael represents "Israel" (the Ten Tribes) whereas "Gabriel"
pertains more to Judah.
No-one can be really sure in these matters. We have hints in the Bible here and
there and the Sages on occasion also voiced their opinions but either failed to
agree with each other or deliberately left such matters as vague as possible.
An alternate but not necessarily contradictory opinion concerning the angels to
the one above is found in the Midrash:

In the same way as God created the four cardinal directions paralleled by the
Four Standards [of the Israelite Encampment, Numbers chapter one] so too around
HIS throne are four angels: Michael, Gabriel, and Oriel, and Raphael. Michael is
at HIS
righthand
side parallel to [the Standard of] Reuben [i.e. Reuben, Simeon, Gad Numbers
1:20-24]...Oriel [also pronounced as "Uriel"]
is at HIS left side parallel to [the Standard of] Dan [i.e. Dan, Asher,
Naphtali
Numbers 1:38-43] who is in the north... Gabriel is before HIM parallel to [the
Standard of] Judah [i.e. Judah,
Issachar, Zebulon Numbers
1:26-31]...Raphael parallels [the Standard of] Ephraim [i.e. Ephraim, Manasseh,
Benjamin Numbers 1:32-37]
EVERY ONE THAT SHALL BE FOUND WRITTEN IN THE BOOK.
Who will be written in the Book?
One opinion says that it refers to all Israel.
Moses mentioned a Book that all who were righteous in Israel appear to be
written in,
YET NOW, IF THOU WILT FORGIVE THEIR
SIN--; AND IF NOT, BLOT ME, I PRAY THEE, OUT OF THY BOOK WHICH THOU HAST
WRITTEN [Exodus 32:32].
David requested [see the Brit-Am Commentary to Psalms] that all they who hate
the Jews be removed from the Book,
LET THEM BE BLOTTED OUT OF THE BOOK OF
THE LIVING, AND NOT BE WRITTEN WITH THE RIGHTEOUS [Psalms 69:28].
Cf.
AND HE WHO IS LEFT IN ZION AND REMAINS
IN JERUSALEM WILL BE CALLED HOLY, EVERY ONE WHO HAS BEEN RECORDED FOR LIFE IN
JERUSALEM [Isaiah 4:3].
AND THE LORD SAID UNTO HIM, GO THROUGH
THE MIDST OF THE CITY, THROUGH THE MIDST OF JERUSALEM, AND SET A MARK UPON THE
FOREHEADS OF THE MEN THAT SIGH AND THAT CRY FOR ALL THE ABOMINATIONS THAT BE
DONE IN THE MIDST THEREOF [Ezekiel 9:4].
AND IT SHALL COME TO PASS, THAT
WHOSOEVER SHALL CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD SHALL BE DELIVERED: FOR IN MOUNT
ZION AND IN JERUSALEM SHALL BE DELIVERANCE, AS THE LORD HATH SAID, AND IN THE
REMNANT WHOM THE LORD SHALL CALL [Joel 2:32].
[Daniel 12:2] AND MANY OF THEM THAT
SLEEP IN THE DUST OF THE EARTH SHALL AWAKE, SOME TO EVERLASTING LIFE, AND SOME
TO SHAME AND EVERLASTING CONTEMPT.
This according to its simple meaning refers to the Resurrection of the
Dead.
Other verses with a similar import include:
THE LORD
KILLETH,
AND MAKETH
ALIVE: HE BRINGETH
DOWN TO THE GRAVE, AND BRINGETH
UP [1-Samuel 2:6].
This verse can be understood both figuratively and literally. God can
cause us to fall down and be debased and broken at the lowest point and once
again from that situation to restore us. Literally we die and there will be a
resurrection of the Dead.
GRAVE: Hebrew "sheol" place of the dead.
THY DEAD MEN SHALL LIVE, TOGETHER WITH
MY DEAD BODY SHALL THEY ARISE. AWAKE AND SING, YE THAT DWELL IN DUST: FOR THY
DEW IS AS THE DEW OF HERBS, AND THE EARTH SHALL CAST OUT THE DEAD [Isaiah
26:19].
There will be a real Resurrection of the Dead in the Last Days. This will
entail the revival of the righteous and those whom God decides. This
Resurrection that will happen however is not the main purpose of the prophecy.
The Resurrection here is used as a parable concerning the reliving of the
Israelite People. The Ancient Hebrews believed in the physical Resurrection of
the Dead. Isaiah uses this belief as an allegory for the Revival of the People
of Israel and the return of the Lost Ten Tribes and the Captives of Judah. This
is explained by the continuation of this Isaiah Chapter 26 into Isaiah Chapter
27 where it says:
AND IT SHALL COME TO PASS IN THAT DAY,
THAT THE GREAT TRUMPET SHALL BE BLOWN, AND THEY SHALL COME WHICH WERE READY TO
PERISH (Hebrew: "Ovdim"
also translatable as "they who were lost") IN THE LAND OF ASSYRIA (i.e.
LTTs),
AND THE OUTCASTS (i.e. Jewish Captives) IN THE LAND OF EGYPT, AND SHALL WORSHIP
THE LORD IN THE HOLY MOUNT AT JERUSALEM [Isaiah 27:13].
Ezekiel (37:3-11) also describes the dead returning to life but there it could
be explained as an allegory with the "dead" representing those of the House of
Israel who are not aware of their ancestry nor of their duty as Israelites.
The way of Scripture enables both meanings to be pertinent at one and the same
time. In the End Times there will be a realization as to who the descendants of
the Lost Ten Tribes and Captive Jews are. Some will be rewarded for how they
conducted themselves prior to that and some just the opposite.
[Daniel 12:3] AND THEY THAT BE WISE
SHALL SHINE AS THE RIGHTNESS OF THE FIRMAMENT; AND THEY THAT TURN MANY TO
RIGHTEOUSNESS AS THE STARS FOR EVER AND EVER.
Those who make other people into better personages will have a great
reward and much credit be attributed to them.
[Daniel 12:4] BUT THOU, O DANIEL, SHUT
UP THE WORDS, AND SEAL THE BOOK, EVEN TO THE TIME OF THE END: MANY SHALL RUN TO
AND FRO, AND KNOWLEDGE SHALL BE INCREASED.
Much will happen before the End Times arrive. Many will think the time is near
when it will still be far off. Nevertheless, as time passes so does
understanding increase.
[Daniel 12:5] THEN I DANIEL LOOKED, AND,
BEHOLD, THERE STOOD OTHER TWO, THE ONE ON THIS SIDE OF THE BANK OF THE RIVER,
AND THE OTHER ON THAT SIDE OF THE BANK OF THE RIVER.
THE RIVER. The Tigris River in Iraq. Is the present US Presence in Iraq
connected to the unfolding of End-Time Prophecy?
[Daniel 12:6] AND ONE SAID TO THE MAN
CLOTHED IN LINEN, WHICH WAS UPON THE WATERS OF THE RIVER, HOW LONG SHALL IT BE
TO THE END OF THESE WONDERS?
See Daniel 10:5 where A CERTAIN MAN CLOTHED IN LINEN is mentioned and identified
as the Angel Gabriel.
[Daniel 12:7] AND I HEARD THE MAN
CLOTHED IN LINEN, WHICH WAS UPON THE WATERS OF THE RIVER, WHEN HE HELD UP HIS
RIGHT HAND AND HIS LEFT HAND UNTO HEAVEN, AND
SWARE
BY HIM THAT LIVETH
FOR EVER THAT IT SHALL BE FOR A TIME, TIMES, AND AN HALF; AND WHEN HE SHALL HAVE
ACCOMPLISHED TO SCATTER THE POWER OF THE HOLY PEOPLE, ALL THESE THINGS SHALL BE
FINISHED.
The Commentary Daat Mikra (by Shmuel Cohen and Yehudah Kiel) says:
"The Almighty will carry out HIS decree to undermine and degrade Israel. Then
all the troubles will be ended. Israel will be afflicted no more. Then will
occur THE END OF THESE WONDERS) Daniel 12: (6 which will entail the Redemption."
[Daniel 12:8] AND I HEARD, BUT I
UNDERSTOOD NOT: THEN SAID I, O MY LORD, WHAT SHALL BE THE END OF THESE THINGS?
[Daniel 12:9] AND HE SAID, GO THY WAY,
DANIEL: FOR THE WORDS ARE CLOSED UP AND SEALED TILL THE TIME OF THE END.
No-one will really be sure how these things will all come about until
they do.
[Daniel 12:10] MANY SHALL BE PURIFIED,
AND MADE WHITE, AND TRIED; BUT THE WICKED SHALL DO WICKEDLY: AND NONE OF THE
WICKED SHALL UNDERSTAND; BUT THE WISE SHALL UNDERSTAND.
In the End Times the wise will finally understand what these events all
mean whilst they are in the midst of them.
[Daniel 12:11] AND FROM THE TIME THAT
THE DAILY SACRIFICE SHALL BE TAKEN AWAY, AND THE ABOMINATION THAT
MAKETH
DESOLATE SET UP, THERE SHALL BE A THOUSAND TWO HUNDRED AND NINETY DAYS.
This may be connected with the event mentioned in Daniel 11:31 where the daily
sacrifice was made to cease and a pagan statue set up in the Temple.
Very many computations and estimations have been made with these numbers all
contradicting each other. Many of the great Commentators also indulged in
reckonings of their own on this matter even though the Sages had previously
condemned such activity.
[Daniel 12:12] BLESSED IS HE THAT
WAITETH,
AND COMETH TO THE THOUSAND THREE HUNDRED AND FIVE AND THIRTY DAYS.
[Daniel 12:13] BUT GO THOU THY WAY TILL
THE END BE: FOR THOU SHALT
REST, AND STAND IN THY LOT AT THE END OF THE DAYS.
Here too, it would appear that a Future Resurrection of the Dead is
prophesied and Daniel promised a place amongst the Righteous.
