Mahdi Akef declared he was 'prepared to send 10,000 jihad fighters immediately

and use existing institutions to gain power.

Embassy in Israel for this blog post, I have made a few minor updates to the
article below at the Embassy's request, to better reflect Talmud Study in Korea

Close to 50 million people live in South Korea, and almost everyone is taught
the Talmud at home by their parents. "We tried to understand why the Jews are
geniuses, and we came to the conclusion that we think it is because they study
Talmud," said the Korean ambassador to Israel, Mr. Young Sam Ma. And this is how
"Rav Papa" became a more well known scholar in Korea than in Israel.
It is doubtful if the Amoraic scholars, Abbaye and Rava imagined their
discussions of Jewish law in the Beit Midrash in Babylon would be taught
hundreds of years later in East Asia. Yet it turns out that the laws of an "egg
born on a holiday" (" ") is actually very interesting to the South Koreans who
have required that Talmud study be part of their compulsory school curriculum.

Ambassador Ma says the he himself studied the Talmud at a very young age: "It is
considered very significant study," he emphasized. The result is that more
Koreans have Talmud sets in their homes than Jews in Israel.
Koreans don't only like the Talmud because they see it as promoting genius, but
because they found values that are close to their hearts.
"In the Jewish tradition, family values are important," explains the South
Korean Ambassador.
"You see it even today, your practice of the Friday evening family meal. In my
country we also focus on family values. The respect for adults, respect and
appreciation for the elderly parallels the high esteem in my country for the
elderly."
Another very significant issue is the respect for education. In the Jewish
tradition parents have a duty to teach their children, and they devote to it
lots of attention. For Korean parents, their children's education is a top

A survey of Hispanic Americans and Jewish Americans has found that about half of
the respondents of each group believe that some Latinos harbor anti-Semitic
attitudes. Hispanics number approximately one-sixth of the U.S. population,
while Jews comprise approximately two per cent of the U.S. population.
The survey was commissioned by the Foundation for Ethnic Understanding and
announced by FFEU president Rabbi Marc Schneier at a conference this week in San
Antonio, Texas.
'These findings are a wake-up call to both communities," says Rabbi Schneier,
"We need to understand how real anti-Semitism is within the Latino community and
how we can counter it as well as find more effective ways to communicate the
value of Israel to bolster Latino empathy for the Jewish state."
"This is truer then ever as Latinos now number more than 50 million
in the U.S." Schneier added. "One out of every 6 Americans is Latino...."
The survey revealed that similar numbers of Jews and Latinos said they perceive
anti-Semitism in the Latino community. According to the survey, 58% of Jews
believe that the Hispanic American community holds some anti-Jewish prejudice,
and 46% of Latinos agreed with this same statement.
Strangely, the press release announcing the survey made no mention of appraising
the existence of anti-Hispanic sentiment in the Jewish community. But 54% of
American Jews surveyed reported that they support new anti-immigration laws
passed in the U.S. state of Arizona, which are widely considered to be
anti-Hispanic in nature.
The South American trade bloc Mercosur signed a free-trade agreement with Israel
on in 2007, its first pact with a country outside of Latin America. In recent
weeks, a number of South American governments have one by one recognized the
existence of a Palestinian state along the 1967 'Green Line' borders.

says are nearly 1,000 underground bunkers, weapons storage facilities and
monitoring sites built by the militant Hezbollah guerrillas in southern Lebanon.
Many of the sites on the map are located south of the Litani River in Lebanon,
the zone where Hezbollah is banned from keeping weapons under the U.N.-sponsored
truce that ended Israel's summer 2006 war with the guerrilla group.
An article on the military spokesman's website says Hezbollah has set up some
550 bunkers, 300 monitoring sites and 100 weapons storage facilities. The
facilities are located in 270 villages, and many are located near hospitals,
private homes and schools, the military said in a statement published on its
website.
Israel and Hezbollah went to war after the Lebanese guerrilla group killed three
Israeli soldiers and captured two others in a cross-border raid. Although Israel
inflicted heavy damage on the group, it was unable to prevent it from firing
some 4,000 rockets into Israel during the monthlong conflict.
Since then, Israel has accused Hezbollah of repeatedly violating the
U.N.-brokered cease-fire by restocking its arsenal and covertly moving forces
into south Lebanon, near the Israeli border. The map released Thursday was meant
to provide new evidence against Hezbollah.
Israel believes Hezbollah now has more than 40,000 rockets, nearly three time
the pre-war level, including more powerful weapons capable of reaching Israel's

Remember also that in 2004, U.N. Resolution 1559 demanded the disarmament of all
Lebanese militia groups. Hizballah is the only group from Lebanon's civil war
that failed to do so. They have had seven years not only to ignore this
resolution (just like almost everyone else has where Hizballah is concerned),
but to build an even larger army in defiance of it.
The militant group, which controls the strongest armed force in Lebanon, did not
acknowledge or deny that the Israeli map was accurate and accused Israel of
employing scare tactics....

The depletion of the ozone layer shielding Earth from damaging ultraviolet rays
has reached an unprecedented low over the Arctic this spring because of harmful
chemicals and a cold winter, the UN weather agency said Tuesday.
