1. Israel at 63: Population of 7,746,000

Independence Day 2011: Central Bureau of Statistics data indicate 75% of population are Jewish, 178,000 babies born in past year, 24,500 immigrants made aliyah

On Israel's 63rd anniversary its population stands at 7,746,000 people, a 2% increase (150,000 residents) compared with 2010. In comparison, on the night of its establishment, the State of Israel consisted of only 806,000 residents.

New data published by the Central Bureau of Statistics on Sunday indicate that nearly 5,837,000 of the population are Jewish (75.3%).

The Arab population stands at 1,587,000 people (20.5%) and the remaining 4.2% are immigrants and their children, who are not listed as Jewish by the Interior Ministry. They comprise 322,000 residents.

Since last year's Independence Day, exactly 178,000 babies have been born in Israel, and 43,000 people have died. Approximately 24,5000 immigrants arrived in the country, while nearly 12,000 chose to leave Israel.

Another 7,500 people joined the general population, but CBS data do not state where they came from.

Over 70% of the Jewish population are native-born Israelis, and more than half of them are at least second generation Israelis. In contrast, only 35% of the population were native-born in 1948.

Also in 1948, there was only one city with more than 100,000 residents ' Tel Aviv-Yafo.

In the present day there are 14 cities with more than 100,000 residents each, six of which have more than 200,000 people, including: Jerusalem, Tel Aviv-Yafo, Haifa, Rishon Lezion, Ashdod and Petah Tikva.

Extracts:

One thing that strikes me about media reporting on al-Qaida is that its antisemitism is mentioned so infrequently. I'd suggest this is part of a larger pattern in the media.

Back in February, Toni Kamins wrote the following regarding the sexual assault of Lara Logan by an Egyptian crowd:

{begin quote}
# While I would be the last one to dispute Islam's anti-Judaism, I am very suspicious about the stories that claim the mob yelled "Jew, Jew."  The only places that aspect of the attack is being alleged are the right-wing press and the Israeli press.#
{end quote}

As we now all know from Lara Logan's interview on 60 Minutes, most of the world media simply didn't report the antisemitic aspect of the assault.

But ignoring antismetism in the Muslim world is hardly new. How many media reports do you ever see about Palestinian antisemitism' Or about Hamas's Jew-hatred' Few to none.

Back in September 2008, president Ahmadinejad of Iran gave an antisemitic rant at the UN, saying that "Zionists" (meaning Jews) control the money supply and secretly rule "some European countries and the US in a deceitful, complex and furtive manner. "

I expect Ahmadinejad's antisemitism got reported in the U.S. because Obama condemned them as antisemitic.

In Canada (and I suspect in most of the world) the media gave no hint that Ahmadinejad's speech was infused with Jew-hatred. The CBC focused on Ahmadinejad's complaints of U.S. "bullying", a complaint likely to gain approval from the CBC's audience. The Toronto Star's Olivia Ward began her report by claiming that Ahmadinejad took "a high moral tone."

Such bleaching of reality seems to be what passes for objectivity in the media these days. Thus, for example, did the BBC report in Mumbai that "gunmen" (not "terrorists" of course) were ''holding people captive in an office block.

To report that these people were Jews and that the "office block" was the only Jewish community centre in a city of millions of Hindus might remind viewers that the "militants" subscribe to a genocidal Jew-hatred.

I'd welcome Toni Kamins opinion on why most of the media did not report that the Egyptian crowd started screaming that Lara Logan was an Israeli and a Jew - and that it was this accusation above all that seemed to drive them into a murderous frenzy.  More generally, I'd welcome opinions about why the media tends to ignore antisemitism in the Muslim world and tends not to report on the Jew-hatred that infuses Islamist politics.

I suspect many in the media don't report antisemitism because they feel it would boost Israel's credibilty in the propaganda and undermine the credibility of Israel's opponents, and they feel this is unfair - or at least not desirable.

3. Israel's 'Silicon Valley' Chips Away at Australian Boycott

An Australian city was anxious to enforce a boycott against Israel, but after its city council discovered that Intel, HP and Motorola operate from the Jewish State, the city chose computers over boycotts.

The Marrickville City Council recently held a stormy debate on a motion to ban Israeli goods and services as part of the international 'Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions' campaign against Israel.

Towards the event, a local newspaper asked, 'What will the city council do when it discovers that many Intel products are made in Israel'' The city stood to lose $4 million in taxes by banning Motorola, Intel and HP.

The boycott was voted down,  for ideologicb-al as well as practical reasons, but supporters found solace in the council's formal statement that it is ''concerned about Palestinian human rights and calls on Israel to end the 'occupation' of Palestinian lands.'

The Marrickville mayor and pro-Arab activists, among them a Jew, exchanged shouts with opponents, who were buoyed and encouraged by native Israelis. The Australian foreign and prime ministers also opposed the proposed boycott.
