A massive hunt is underway for the terrorists behind a series of bomb blasts on London's public transport system that killed 52 overnight.
As authorities try to verify a claim of responsibility for the attacks by a group linking itself to al-Qaeda, the BBC quoted Whitehall sources saying every resource was being used to build a picture of who was to blame.
British police said the fatalities centred around the Liverpool Street explosion, while others lost their lives at the King's Cross blast and more were killed at Edgware Road.
Others died in the explosion on a double decker bus at Upper Woburn Place.
At least 700 were injured. Many suffering burns and high-velocity puncture wounds packed the capital's hospitals, stretching facilities to the limit.
At Royal London hospital, where 208 victims were taken, 300 doctors and nurses treated the patients.
Britain's Home Secretary Charles Clarke, the country's top law enforcement officer, confirmed four explosions began at 8.51 am.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Brian Paddick said 33 died in the Underground rail system. Others had died in the bus explosion, but he gave no figures.

A previously unknown group calling itself the "Secret Organisation of al-Qaeda in Europe" claimed responsibility for the attacks. The group said the explosions were in retaliation for Britain's involvement in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to an Arabic-language news website.
A shaken British Prime Minister Tony Blair who rushed back to London from the G8 world leaders meeting confirmed within hours that the bombings were the work of terrorists, declaring the city had been hit by a "barbaric" attack.
"We are united in our resolve to confront and defeat this terrorism," he said.
"They are trying to use the slaughter of innnocent people to cull us, to frighten us out of doing the things that we want to," he said. "They should not and they must not succeed."
Australian Prime Minister John Howard last night expressed horror and disgust at the attacks, and said free nations must not yield to the threat of terrorism. "It's important that we stand shoulder to shoulder with our British allies at a time such as this," Mr Howard said.
The Queen later released a statement saying: "The dreadful events in London this morning have deeply shocked us all. I know I speak for the whole nation in expressing my sympathies to all those affected and the relatives of the killed and injured."

Barry Chamish has sent out a new "scoop" in which he claims the Americans are
building a vast base near the Ben Gurion Airport to be used as a Concentration Camp to hold Jewish settlers in.

Barry ("Fifth Columnist") Chamish was billed as the star attraction and major guest speaker

What is more they are false and evil.
Collusion does take place. Class and economic interests do exists. People are susceptible to bribes
both openly and in roundabout ways. We can ALL be influenced by outside factors.
Nevertheless there is no Conspiracy BUT Conspiracy writers do belong in a de facto sense
to a sinister movement that is against both the "Anglo" and "Jewish" peoples and their kin.
Stories about the "Illuminati" and the like are like stories about witches.
Witches did exist and they may have done harm but the stories about them and the
reactions of people who started seeing them everywhere were far more harmful

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon this afternoon (Thursday), 7.7.05, following the
terrorist attacks in London, telephoned British Ambassador to Israel Simon
McDonald and asked him to convey the former's shock, and that of the Israeli
government, to British Prime Minister Tony Blair over the awful crime that
was committed against innocent Britons. Prime Minister Sharon also asked to
convey the Israeli people's condolences to the British people and said that
at these moments all of Israel expresses solidarity with the residents of
Great Britain, feels their pain, and sends condolences to the families of
those killed and best wishes for a quick recovery to those who were injured.
The Prime Minister said that the entire world must unite in the war against
terrorism the purpose of which is to murder innocent people.

Bush extends PLO office. President Bush allowed the PLO office in Washington to stay open for another six months. Mean (or median) is the one where half of your data points are above and
half are below. Mode is the one that we use here; the most common value.
Mode can NOT have a value that isn't represented in the set of data points.
Average most definitely can. Median is trickier, and depends on whether
you've got an odd or even number both of data points and of unique values.

them it does. We often use or understand the term "average" in the wrong way.
Example:
If we have 7 persons: One has 70,000 and the other six have 7,000 each
we add up the total and get 77,000 then divide the total by 7 and we have an
average of 11,000 but this would lead us to believe that most of them have
more than they do.

The middle number (no.4) is the median number and this gives us 7000
which in this case is a more correct idea of what most people have.

The Median (Middle) would be 6,500
and the modal (most frequent) would be 5,000
Each of these figures are useful.
The Average gives us an idea of how much is spread through the total.

The Modal lets us know what the most frequent figures are.
According to a posting I saw recently:
Take any King of England and you will find that in the U.S, Canada,
and the UK there are probably 5 or 6 million people today who can accurately
claim their descendants. The same applies to the Kings of Scotland, Wales, and Ireland
albeit in these cases the number of descendants will probably be less
but they will still be plentiful.

Just one day after the London bombings by Islamic terrorists, British Prime Minister Tony Blair announced, quite inappropriately, the G8's 9 billion dollars 'aid package' to the Palestinian Authority (PA). For the next three years the infrastructure of terror will receive extra 3 billion dollars a year from Western countries. Arab Palestinian terrorists are so happy and grateful for this generous gift! To leave no doubt of their appreciation, they unleashed the suicide bombers and a rain of rockets on the Israeli population.
Nobody pays attention to the fact that the same ideology of hate motivates Arab Palestinian terrorists in Israel and Al-Qaida 'militants' worldwide. Billions of dollars are flowing into the hands of PA terrorists each year. They promised peace at Oslo. But the terror never stopped!
In 1992, United Nations Security Council Resolution 799 reinforces the Fourth Geneva Convention of 12 August 1949 to all the 'Palestinian' territories occupied by Israel since 1967, and affirms that deportation of (any) civilians constitutes a contravention of its obligations under the Convention. The resolution does not exclude Jews. Sharon and his cronies are in the process of violation of International Law! They must be charged with the crime against humanity and stand trial! The silence and inaction of the UN has exposed the deep anti-Semitic nature of the organization and has nullified the Law, which was adopted with the prime purpose - to prevent Jews from taking control over the Jewish ancestral land.
We Have the Same Enemy. The Israeli Mossad has confirmed that the explosives used in London's terrorist attacks were the same explosives used by two British homicide bombers who killed three people in Tel Aviv's Mike's Place last year.
Suicide Blast in Israel. The death toll of suicide Netanya bombing rose to five. Among the wounded was a 6-year-old girl who was badly burned. The bomber was a member of Islamic Jihad from the West Bank. 40 minutes earlier, a car-bomb exploded prematurely in the Samaria.
Dates are Back to Life after 2000 years. Israeli researchers have germinated a sapling date palm from 2,000-year-old seeds found on Masada, saying their research could benefit future generations.
Control Bacteria Without Use of Antibiotics. A method for controlling bacterial activity without antibiotics by interfering with their communication process has been developed by a young Hebrew University of Jerusalem researcher Adel Jabbour. The method focused on disruption of communication between bacterial biofilms called "quorum sensing," which controls their collective.

5. New Age Ideology: Anti-Israel and anti-Jewish
New Age Ideology is a driving force behind part of the liberal
and libertarian trends of modern society. Even liberal Christians and Jews have been infected by
this movement.
The movement has strong Nazi-like tendencies as pointed out in the past by subscribers of Brit-Am
but the point is worth repeating in view of recent events
and the increasing power of New Age tendencies.
Alice A Bailey was a founder of this movement and her works are still studied by adherents of it.

What the terrorists know that we don’t.

We think Gaza is all about Israel and the Palestinians; our enemies know it's mainly about us. We think we are encouraging Israel to hand Gaza over to Mahmoud Abbas and his Fatah party, local Palestinians with purely local ambitions ambitions that encompass the whole of Israel, perhaps, but nothing beyond it ambitions that have nothing to do with us. Our enemies know that behind a Fatah fig leaf, we are handing Gaza over to Hamas, an international terrorist organization of global reach and ambition that is one of America's deadliest enemies. We think Hamas only attacks Jews. They ["our Islamofascist enemies"] know that Hamas is a main recruiting agent for Arab jihadists, not just from among the 2.4 million Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank and from the much larger numbers of Palestinians scattered in strategic enclaves throughout the region and the world, but for other Arabs too. We think Hamas sends all these jihadists only to Israel. They know Hamas sends a never-ending stream of them to Afghanistan, Chechnya, the Balkans, Kashmir, Lebanon and, most critically for us right now, to Iraq. And when our press insistently refers to Abu Musab al Zarqawi, the master terrorist who directs the foreign jihadists in Iraq, as "a Jordanian," our enemies laugh. They know Zarqawi has always called himself a Palestinian, and is recognized as such, in Jordan and throughout the Middle East.
To see what Hamas control of Gaza will mean for us in Iraq, we have to see it as our enemies do not just Hamas, but its parent organization, the Brotherhood, and its longtime partners Hezbollah, al Qaeda, and the Wahhabi and Salafist movements. To do that, forget Israel entirely for a moment. Look only at the terror war against America, and at the geography of Islamofascism that supports it. Place Gaza in that context, and its strategic location jumps out at you. Control of Gaza gives Hamas and its partners direct access to the land border with Egypt, as well as access by sea to terrorist supply ports in Lebanon and Syria, and from them, overland, to the terror training camps in Syria, Lebanon, and Iran and to the ratlines from Syria into Iraq.
The good news is that unlike the Biblical Samson, we are not irrevocably blind, only seduced and blindfolded by a mix of propaganda, ideology, and wishful thinking that prevent us from seeing reality. If we tear off our blindfold and call a halt to the Gaza retreat before August 17, we will save ourselves and our friends in Iraq much anguish, and save our Israeli friends and perhaps our Lebanese friends too. And if we do it boldly, proclaiming our determination to defeat Islamofascist terror in Gaza as we are defeating it in Iraq and Afghanistan, we will bring a final American victory much closer.

MOST KFAR MAIMON PROTESTORS GO HOME

The 48-hour mass protest against the expulsion ended in the Negev
community Kfar Maimon around 11 PM Wed. night. Several hundred people
remained afterwards, and activity will be renewed next week.
The police opened the gates to the moshav this morning (Thursday),
allowing free entry and exit for the first time since Monday evening.
Most of the estimated 10-15,000 protestors left during the course of
the night, and several hundred are expected to remain today.
The protestors circled the gates of the town last night from within,
many of them dancing and singing with a Torah scroll, but did nothing
to clash with the security forces. Hundreds of people spent well over
an hour speaking "heart-to-heart" with policemen and soldiers,
explaining their opposition to the expulsion of Jews from their homes
in the Land of Israel.
One little girl, aged approximately 11, was shown on national
television giving an impassioned speech to policewomen, who did not
remain unmoved: "Could you ever imagine evacuating your own mothers
from their homes? Could you? And what kind of word is this, to
evacuate? We evacuate garbage, or enemies - but not brothers!"
The chant "Soldier, Policeman, Refuse the Order," was replaced last
night with, "Soldier, Policeman, We Love You, We Love the IDF." Some
demonstrators walked around with megaphones, proclaiming, "We're not
the enemy; we love you. Go fight the real enemy."
The singing and hear-to-heart talking contrasted starkly with the
scenes of chain-link fences and even barbed wire separating between
rows of security forces and idealistic citizens.
In announcing the end of the Kfar Maimon event, the organizers told
the crowds that in the merit of the 20,000 soldiers and policemen
deployed around Kfar Maimon, 1,000 people had succeeded in making
their way to Gush Katif last night. The police later reported,
however, that they had arrested some 300 suspects trying to
"infiltrate into a closed military zone."
The crowds - families, old and young, religious and secular - sang
HaTikvah and Ani Maamin (I Believe in the Coming of the Messiah), and
then began to disperse. Many made their way by police-supplied bus,
or other vehicles, or by foot, to Netivot, 7 kilometers away, where
they had left their cars on Monday night, when the protest started.
Ami Shaked, the security officer of Gush Katif - a self-proclaimed
non-religious Jew - told the giant crowds at Kfar Maimon last night,
"We will continue to light up the orange color around the world, and
this gives strength to the residents of Gush Katif in maintaining
their daily lives. 'Not by military might or force, but by My spirit,
G-d said' - keep smiling, keep lighting up, and that's how we will
win."
YAD VASHEM HONORS FIVE RIGHTEOUS GENTILES

A ceremony posthumously honoring five non-Jews who saved Jews during
the Holocaust was held today (Thursday) at the Yad Vashem Holocaust
Museum in Jerusalem.
The awards were bestowed upon Yevgenia Morozova (Belarus), Stoicheva
Stanka (Bulgaria), Feodor Melnik (Ukraine), and Steponas and Viktorija
Zrelskis (Lithuania). Relatives of the five received the Righteous
Gentile awards in their names.
The ceremony was conducted in Hebrew and Russian, with the
participation of two of the survivors - Sofa Kremen Grinshtein and
Medi Hillel - and relatives of other survivors.
Yad Vashem provided background information on the five righteous
rescuers. Yevgenia Morozova, for instance, risked her life several
times to host Sofia and Galina Levina and their family after the Minsk
ghetto was established in August 1941. Yevgenia obtained forged
documents for the two sisters, and pretended they were her relatives.
On one occasion, the sisters were stopped in the street by a policeman
who suspected they were Jewish. They asked the policeman to go to
Yevgenia's house, and she convinced him that they were her cousins and
were not Jewish. This was especially dangerous, as Sofia and Galina's
father had been a well-known pediatrician in Minsk before the war,
thus that it was likely that the policeman could have been a former
patient.
Stanka Stoicheva of Bulgaria hid Leah Farchi, a young pregnant wife
whose husband had been sent to forced labor, in her home in
Gergoviste. At one point during the pregnancy, Leah's life was in
danger, but it wasn't possible for her to go to the hospital without
the proper permit. Stanka, a midwife by profession, took it upon
herself to help Leah give birth with the basic means at her disposal,
and thus she saved both the lives of Leah and the baby, Medi. Leah
and Medi then remained in Stanka's house, and she took care of all
their needs.
Feodor Melnik of Ukraine saved young Sofa Kremen, whose parents had
been murdered in an action in August 1942, by hiding her in the the
attic of his work place. He later smuggled her to his parents' home,
and from there to the ghetto in Shargorod, which was under Romanian
control, where she remained until liberation in March 1944.
Immediately after liberation, Melnik was drafted into the Red Army and
fell in battle in 1945. Sofa later testified that Melnik also aided a
Jewish family by the name of Krasnyanski.
Steponas and Viktorija Zrelskis hid their friends Isaak and Pesia Katz
of Kovno, Lithuania from August 1943 until August 1944 in a bunker
they built especially for them under their granary. They padded the
bunker with straw and put a wooden bed in it.

The Bible is clear about the fact that those nations that divide the Land of Israel will incur the disfavour of God. So, the conflict now unfolding in Gaza has serious implications for all the world. The Land of Canaan belongs to God! He has bequeathed it to the Jewish people as an everlasting possession as part of His plan for world redemption. To meddle with that which God has given is a grave oversight. The nations must be warned and even though they happily discount the reality of the God of Heaven, they will soon hear from Him and are!
On the other hand, the prophets have always spoken to Israel about her spiritual condition. Her departure from serving the God of her forefathers has always led to judgment, anguish and trouble within her borders. In addition the God of the Bible has always warned Israel about making alliances with foreign nations that in the end bring her to a place of compromise and land forfeiture. Israel is called upon to trust God fully.
The present drama unfolding in Gaza is therefore complex and cannot be reduced to simplistic deductions. As an organization that has a proven track record of standing with Israel, we do speak out today in the following way:
(1) We are convinced that Israel is placing herself in grave and serious danger by the "Gaza pullout". We are not persuaded at all of the peaceful intentions of the Palestinian people. On the ground in Gaza, where the majority influence is Hamas, they unashamedly declare their desire to remove the Jews from what they call "Muslim soil". They will most definitely continue their violent struggle from their new vantage point after disengagement. We fear that Kassam missiles will soon rain down on Ashdod and Ashkelon.
(2) We affirm that all nations participating in the present process to divide the land will eventually fall into the hands of the Living God. He has not changed and those nations like Assyria, Babylon and Rome that engaged in "this business" are now extinct. Why should it be different in the future?
(3) We lovingly call upon Israel to call for a Day of Humility and Repentance. The God of the Bible has always responded to your cry and will do so now. We will never tell you what to do because we respect your democracy but we feel that we must urge you to cast yourselves upon the God who has borne you on "Eagles' wings" for centuries. He will not fail you now. He will hear your cry when you call upon Him with all your heart (2 Chronicles 7:14).
(4) We urge the Church to come to a place of urgent and persistent prayer. Israel is in real danger. The avalanche of anti-Semitism and anti-Israelism in the world is alarming. Now is the time to rise up and pray. Pray for Israel's leaders, pray for wisdom, pray for deliverance and pray for Israel's redemption. Please note that we have often stated that to pray for Israel without reference to her spiritual condition is to disconnect yourself from the purpose of God. God is dealing with Israel and in the end He will have His way with her.
(5) We urge Christians everywhere to reject all forms of anti-Semitism and to pray for the Jewish communities of Gaza. These precious people were encouraged to settle in the region by a government that is now determined to remove them. Whatever the debate may be in Israel about this, the undeniable fact is that we are looking at a very real human tragedy. Men, women and children are being uprooted from their homes and familiar surroundings with very painful and traumatic consequences. They need our prayers and comfort.
The International Christian Embassy Jerusalem is fully committed to the above position and always has been. We urge all our supporters to act now and help us fulfill our calling to be a light of love and comfort to Israel.

Israeli gov't admits: US Pressures Determine Retreat Policy

The U.S. Department has made it clear to Prime Minister Ariel Sharon: It wants the Jews out of the Katif district of Gaza by August 15th, with no excuses.
The Chief Rabbi of Haifa, Rabbi Shear Yashuv Cohen, came to Jerusalem and pleaded with Sharon to reconsider his plan to retreat from Katif, which involves Israel's obliteration of the 21 Jewish communities there, including 325 thriving Jewish farms and 86 synagogues and Jewish study centers
Sharon's answer to Rabbi Cohen: "This is what the U.S. State Department is demanding that I do, and I must do it".
It does not matter that half of the 9000 Jews who live in Katif have no where to go, with their relocation plans still left up in the air.
It does not matter that the Israeli government cannot offer more than two containers to each family to help them remove their possessions.
It does not seem to matter that the experts in Israel's security establishment are warning that the result of Israel's hasty retreat will be the creation of a new Islamic terror base.
Sharon is now making it clear that he is under pressure from the U.S. government, and that its that.
Yet one of the common assumptions over the past two years is that The Sharon government's plan to expel Jews from Gaza and the Northern Samaria and unilaterally hand the area over to an independent Palestinian entity had been an entirely autonomous Israeli decision.
Yet it can now be determined that the US government was behind it all along
In meetings with concerned American citizens, Danny Ayalon, Israeli ambassador to the U.S, clearly states that Sharon's disengagement plan is part of an overall Israeli-American agreement.
In late June, Ayalon met with representatives of the Orthodox Union, one of the largest contingents of United States Orthodox Jews, and told them clearly that "Prime Minister Sharon is left with no choice. He is doing exactly what the U.S. expects him to do"
In an interview with the Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles published on June 22nd, 2005, Ayalon reversed earlier Israeli government statements, saying that Israel does not expect the Palestinian Authority (PA) to dismantle terrorist infrastructure until after the planned expulsion, mentioning that ending terrorism and anti-Israel incitement had been conditions Israel had demanded from the PA before carrying out the plan. However, Ayalon indicated that the agreement with the U.S. was more important than an agreement with the PA.
Furthermore, the Israeli ambassador asserted that "Disengagement has to be viewed in the context of Israel-United States relations…"This pullout did not follow an agreement with the Palestinians, but it followed something which is much more important, an agreement with the United States. Disengagement is something that creates a common agenda between us and the United States."
When asked how much the withdrawal depends on the Arabs, since the Israeli agreement is with Washington, Ayalon altered previous Israeli government demands that the PA control terrorism before the pullout.
This week's sudden announcement of the resignation of Israel Finance Minister Netanyahu was aimed at the US State Department more than the Israeli public.
In the final interview given by Netanyahu to the Jerusalem Post on August 5th, 2005, two days before his resignation, he indicated that the current policy pursued by the government of Israel should be perceived as a threat to the security interests of the U.S. and of all western countries, since it creates a terror base in Gaza, since the Palestinian Authority has incorporated the Hamas and other Palestinian terror organizations instead of dismantling them..
Yet the position of the U.S. State Department remains undaunted: Prime Minister Ariel Sharon must dismantle and withdraw any and all Israeli presence from every Jewish community in the Katif district of Gaza by mid-August.
Sources in the Palestinian Authority and the U.S. government confirm that the U.S. now urges that Palestinian armed forces be immediately moved into these Jewish communities in mid-August, as Israel forcibly removes Israeli Jewish citizens who have lived there for more than thirty years. That could mean that the Palestinian Authority armed forces will be allowed to pursue and punish any Jews who cling to their property as the Israeli army is retreating.
U.S. Secretary of State Condeleeza Rice also demands that Israel find a way to assure Palestinian Arabs some kind of safe passage that will enable Palestinian Arab residents of Gaza to traverse Israel in order to reach their fellow compatriots in the other parts of the Palestinian Arab self-ruled areas in Judea and Samaria.
Rice is also demanding that Israel allow additional arms and ammunition to flow to the Palestinian Authority, ignoring the fact that the arms and ammunition supplied to the PA between 1993 and 2000 were turned against Israeli citizens since the fall of 2000, with a human toll of 1,073 people murdered in cold blood by armed Arab terrorists. And when special U.S. presidential envoy, General William Ward, was asked two weeks ago by the U.S. International Relations Committee if the U.S. could account for the weapons that it had supplied to the Palestinian Authority in the mid-nineties, Ward's answer was in the negative.
Rice seems to not know or nor care that the Palestinian Authority and its ruling Fateh organization, remain at war with the state of Israel, with one purpose in mind: the liberation of Palestine, from the Jordan River until the Mediterranean Sea.
When Israel Minister of Defence Shaul Mofaz objected to Rice's demand for a safe passage for Palestinian Arab residents from Gaza to the west bank, sources at the Israel Ministry of Defence confirmed to the media that a screaming match occurred, with the U.S. Secretary of State clarifying that she will not accept "no" for an answer in this regard.
Another recently resigned Israel government minister, Natan Scharansky, confirms that the motivating factor for Sharon's retreat remains the pressure that he is under from the American government and the other democracies abroad.
Sharansky wonders why it is that the world's democracies, led by the United States of America, are so keen to witness the creation of a new anti-democratic and anti-western and anti-American Islamic state in the Middle East.
Questions to the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv as to why the U.S. State Department would push Sharon in this direction have remain unanswered.
Israeli government officials do report that they are inundated with calls ad e-mails from thousands of American Jews and Christians who question the judgment of Israel's Prime Minister in regards to the inherent dangers of his disengagement policy.
The time has come to ask the question: Why do U.S. citizens not challenge the pressures that the U.S. State Department brings against Israel in this regard?
If the U.S. State Department relents on its pressure against the government of Israel, Israel will reconsider its plans for a hasty retreat from its Jewish communities in the Katif district of Gaza.
The ball lies with the citizens and the Congress of the United States of America.

Police and soldiers have attempted to enter the settlements
and in some cases have done so but at present they are only handing out
evacuation notices and are giving the settlers 48 hours to leave.
In some settlements the authorities have been refused entry.
IN SOME of the mainly non-religious SETTLEMENTS most of the families are leaving
at present of their own will
Latest estimates:
The authorities thought that 80% would leave on their "own".
Less than 50% per cent of the settlers are leaving on their own while another half are refusing to leave.
Even amongst those who "agreed" to leave peaceably there are those who are changing their mind.
This is despite that by refusing to leave peacefully the settlers are placing in great jeopardy
claims to compensation, i.e. their economic future.
More than 6000 sympathizers (mainly youths and young men) have succeeded in
"smuggling" themselves into the settlements to strengthen resistance to the evil decrees.
500 disengagement opponents were arrested last night. Thousands attempted to join the
settlements but most were prevented by police and army forces.
Up to half the soldiers being sent at the last minute are refusing to do anything.
Rabbi Ovadiah Yoseph of the important Shas Party has ordered all his Knesset Members
to go to the area.
Media coverage is on the whole antagonistic to the settlers.
The potential use of violence by the authorities is always present in the atmosphere.
The intention of the government is to either begin with the evacuation BY FORCE of three settlements
in one of which my son and his family are present. This is planned to take place within
the next two days.
OR
to leave the larger "refractory" settlements to the last and attempt to evacuate them next week.
The Government has approved the demolition of 20 more settlements
thus removing one of the hoped-for impediments to completion of the process.

The following updates last week's posting concerning a Hebrew-language
article in Ha'aretz about excavations in Tel Beth-Shemesh. According to the
article, the findings establish the existence of a strong central government
in Jerusalem in the tenth/ninth centuries BCE, which is considered to be the
time of the early monarchy, the time of David, Solomon and their successors.
Dr. Shlomo Bunimovitz and Dr. Zvi Lederman, from the Archeological Institute
of Tel-Aviv University, are directing the excavations, which began in 1990.
1. An informal translation of the beginning of the Ha'aretz article
states: "A corner of a monumental wall next to a massive observation tower;
a large public structure of over 250 square meters; a subterranean reservoir
with a capacity of about 800 cubic meters of water in case of siege; an iron
foundry where dozens of arrow-heads were discovered among other items -
these are some of the impressive structures built in Tel Beit Shemesh in the
second half of the 10th century and early 9th century BCE." Although the
wall that surrounded Tel Beit Shemesh was previously attributed "to the
Canaanite Period (the second millennium before the common era ).... now it
turns out that parts of it were impressively rebuilt early in the Judean
kingdom."
The article concludes: "Relying on new developments in anthropology,
which regard border regions important as social arenas and a source of
insight about what goes on in the political and cultural center, [Dr.
Bunimovitz and Dr. Lederman] propose 'a view from the border' into the heart
of the Judean state. Even if findings are scant in the very center of the
state, in Jerusalem, in fringe and border regions, like the Shephela and the
Beersheba valley, it is possible to witness firm signs for the existence of
a centralized Israelite political body already at the end of the 10th
century and the beginning of the 9th century before the common era.
According to the scholars, this can be learned from the sharp change of the
character of the site during that period and also from the extent of the
construction projects unearthed in Tel Beit Shemesh: the massive
fortifications, the large public structures, the iron workshop and the
subterranean reservoir, could have been built only by public initiative
originating in the capital, Jerusalem."
2. Asked about the Ha'aretz article, Dr. Lederman replied in an e-mail:
"The article in Haaretz was based on our on-going research at Tel
Beth-Shemesh, which is now being summarized in a book which will be
published soon at Tel Aviv University Institute of Archaeology, Monograph
Series (it will be published in English). A preliminary summary of our
research dealing with the topic of evidence for the rise of central
political power already at the end of the 10th or early 9th centuries BCE

"... the iron smithy at Tel Beth-Shemesh ... is the earliest known, and
from a very crucial period of transition from bronze to iron. We were able
to find such a workshop due to a very careful method of excavations that we
have conducted. My guess is that installations like this existed in other
sites, but yet were not found or identified.
"Indeed, the archaeological records do not point to any big industrial
shift until later in the 8th century BCE. This progress and development was
not able until the great superpowers revived, and especially with the rise
of the Neo-Assyrian Empire.
"Iron was known (and used) already from the 15th century BCE. It was
only in the 10th century BCE when iron became a daily utilitarian metal, for
daily use - not swords and spears, but plowshare, nails, hoes, etc."
"The incorporation of an iron workshop right at the time in the newly
built royal administrative walled city at the border with Philistia is of a
great interest - not just for us, but for all scholars and interested
people.
"Our initial work at the iron smithy was stopped. We need to change our

Shalom Achi Yair: Let me add the voice of my wife Mai, my son Yehoshua and myself in praying for you and the settlers. We have called/e-mailed, petitioned President Bush, our Senator from Minnesota Norm Coleman [who is Jewish], Ariel Sharon and Knesset members who are against the disengagement plan.
There seems to be a conflict regarding the directive to remove the settlers. Women in Green says that pressure from President Bush has been responsible in implementing the disengagement plan by Ariel Sharon. This also was reported on the Jerusalem Post as well as Brit Am. Daniel Pipes said that it is a unilateral decision by Ariel Sharon and is not being directed by President Bush. In any event, we know that the primacy of the decisions lies at the doors of President Bush, the State Department and Ariel Sharon.
Brit Am members should pray over these 2 verses from scripture:
(1. Leviticus 25:23: "The land shall not be sold in perpetuity for for the land is mine; for you
are sojourners and residents with me."
(2. Amos 9:15: "I will plant them upon their land and they will never again be uprooted from
their land that I have given them, says HaShem."
President Bush, the State Department, Ariel Sharon and the Knesset members in favor of the disengagement plan need to know that the land is not theirs to give away. Any move to do so will only bring disaster upon their heads. There are multitudes at the ready who are willing to do whatever is necessary to prevent the partitioning of Eretz Yisrael. Perhaps HaShem will use this ugly episode to provoke an interest in the return of the Northern Kingdom and see the demise of the Arab interlopers who have illegally possessed the land given to HaShem's chosen people.

The following sentence from the Wall Street Journal jumped out at me today in a longer story--
"But Israel cannot be expected to make further wrenching withdrawals if the message from the international community is that they are never enough."
Couldn't have said it better. And my sense is that that is EXACTLY the message Israel can expect to continue to hear from the international community.
It's time for Israel to be proactive, and seize her own destiny. May the House of Joseph cease its impatient prodding and come to the aid of Judah.

Evacuation of the community of Kfar Darom, in the central Gaza Strip,

Today, August 18, 2005, the evacuation of the residents of the community
of Kfar Darom has been completed, according to paragraph 22B of the Law
of "Implementation of the Disengagement Plan 2005".
Joint IDF and Israel Police forces began evacuating the residents of
Kfar Darom this morning and completed in the evening hours. Over 655
Israelis were evacuated from the community, 160 assailants were arrested
by Israel Police forces.
During the evacuation process hundreds of people barricaded themselves
in several areas in the community. The evacuation of the religious
seminary in the community was relatively quick, and afterwards the
forces completed the evacuation of over 70 Israelis who barricaded
themselves in the vegetable factory.
Approximately 200 civilians, most of them youngsters, were evacuated
from the community's synagogue, after repeated attempts by IDF to have
the people leave willingly failed.

and policemen were lightly wounded; some of them were hit by the
substance presumed to be acid.
During the evacuation, an IDF armored vehicle accidentally hit a water
pipe near the community of Kfar Darom, and the water supply to the
community was cut off. Until the pipe was fixed the security forces
supplied bottled water to those in the community.

My prayers go up daily for the "peace of Jerusalem" and all the
Land.
I (as so many others) am totally mystified about this withdrawal.
What will it accomplish? When (not if) terrorism escalates from the
borders of a Palestinian Gaza, what then? Will the government admit it
was all a tragic mistake? Will the 30 years of sacrifice all be
acknowledged, but too late? Will the IDF have to keep going in,
suffering casualties, and accomplishing what?
What will have been accomplished--aside from making what every
thinking person must believe is an EMPTY GESTURE? Will world opinion
suddenly embrace Israel with warmth and fuzzy feelings? Not at all:
what's going to happen is that world opinion will demand more, more,
more--until Israel is only a memory. Someday, Israel must ignore world
opinion, claim her national rights, and defend herself.
Yet, when all is said and done, the Land belongs to Israel,
including Gaza, and the words of Scripture will be realized, as Judah
possesses Gaza and all its towns, from the Brook of Egypt all the way
north. What's going on right now is a terrible detour, but only a
detour.

My son and his family have left Gush Katif along with the members of the settlement
they were staying in. The US-induced retreat from the area is continuing.
There is nothing US-induced about this. And if you want to disagree, then I would like prove that this is US-initiated. I get so tired of every time something happens like this that it is blamed on the US. When are we going to take some responsibility, especially anyone who voted for Sharon?
This was Sharon's idea from the outset. He took it to Washington and sold it. He would be doing this whether anyone in the world agreed with him or not. He has used it as an excuse to get more money from the states. I am constantly amazed at how surprised everyone is that Sharon is doing this.
This, or similar, was in his game plan BEFORE he was elected. This is why I didn't vote for him. All he said during campaigning for his first term was 'painful concessions' would be required. Over and over I heard this. Thus, as someone who would normally have voted for the Likud representative, I switched my vote to Natan Sharansky. Coming off Barak, I frankly thought Sharon had plans to give a part of Jerusalem away. He may still have that plan. But bottom line, I knew he was planning to give land away, and so I didn't vote for him. Sharon created this whole thing. It was his idea from the outset and remains his. He wants to implement HIS idea, and he really doesn't care who agrees with him or not.

Some will say that democracy won through the use of well-trained officers. Some will say that the ease with which Gush Katif was evacuated shows that any settlement can be evacuated with a determined political leadership. Others will say the whole thing was a carefully constructed show from the start: The settlers knew the withdrawal was a done deal and let their youth let off some steam. They wanted to be portrayed as patriotic on the one hand, but were distressed over the collapse of their entire world on the other. The leaders were divided into those who called for resistance and those who opposed it. Sometimes both sides were embodied in a single individual.

US Consul General Jacob Walles will transfer $50 million to PA Finance Minister Salam Fayyad on Wednesday to go towards repairing infrastructure and new construction in Gaza.
On Tuesday, Palestinian Authority Minister for Civilian Affairs Mohammad Dahlan said that after Israel completes its Gaza withdrawal, 30 infrastructure projects, totaling $500 million, would be launched.
Dahlan said the projects would be funded by donations from around the world.
The UAE announced last month that it would donate $100 million to build a new city for some 30,000 Palestinians on the rubble of Morag. Earlier this week, the PA approved the request. The city, which will consist of 3,000 housing units, will be named after UAE ruler Khalifa Bin Zayed.

AUSTRALIA'S economy is set to ride a wave of prosperity enjoyed by China, which is about to overtake the US as the driving force of the world's economic growth.
China's massive economy is expected to expand by more than 10 per cent over the next decade, the biggest economic expansion the world has seen.
Its already phenomenal growth will increase to even higher levels as market reforms, high savings and a vast pool of surplus labour combine.
China experts Ross Garnaut, of the Australian National University, and Yiping Huang, of Citigroup, forecast that far from slowing, as financial markets have assumed, China's growth is likely to accelerate as its economic problems recede, and its market reforms pay even higher dividends.
ANU economist Ligang Song predicted that China's strong growth in demand for resources would last for at least another 15 years, tempered only by sorely-needed improvements in efficiency and a gradual restructuring towards service industries. Professor Garnaut hailed China as a success story that had defied a generation of critics.
For 25 years, China has averaged growth of 9.5 per cent a year, easily the highest in the world, and increased its share of global output from 3.2 to 13.6 per cent. If the forecasts are right, it will overtake the US within a decade to become the world's biggest economy.
Mr Huang said China still has up to 250 million surplus workers in agriculture, and is already investing 45 per cent of its GDP (compared to 25 per cent in Australia). But he said that could rise even higher, as it gradually shifts from investing in low-yield US Treasury bonds to more rewarding investments at home.

Shmuel Matt, 21, a British yeshiva student, was murdered by an Arab
terrorist in the Old City Wed. night, 24 hours after the last of the
Disengagement expellees arrived in their temporary quarters.
The terrorist stabbed Matt to death, and similarly wounded his friend,
in an attack near Jaffa Gate in Jerusalem.
The murderer stabbed his first victim in the leg at around 8:30 PM on
David Street. The young man suffered moderate injuries and managed to
reach the nearby police station, where he reported he was attacked
with a kitchen knife.
Police rushed to the scene and discovered a second stabbing victim -
Shmuel Matt - with stomach wounds. Medics tried to resuscitate him as
he was rushed to Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital, where he died while
undergoing an operation. Police discovered the 30-centimeter
(12-inch) knife at the scene.
The first victim was hospitalized at Shaarei Zedek Hospital.
Both victims were studying at the Mir Yeshiva in Jerusalem, not far
from the Old City. Shmuel Matt arrived in Israel about 18 months ago,
and was scheduled to be married this coming November.
The attacker was described as being in his 30s, and police set up
roadblocks in pursuit of him at all entrances to Jerusalem.

An IDF unit in the Tul Karem refugee camp last night killed five
Palestinian terrorists, including an Islamic Jihad leader.
The five dead terrorists belonged to the Islamic Jihad chapter in Tul
Karem, in which one of them was a leading figure.
The Israeli force was patrolling the area when the terror cell
attacked them with gunfire and an explosive device. The soldiers
returned fire, killing the five.
The Islamic Jihad chapter in question was responsible for many attacks
against Israelis, most notably the murder at the Stage club in Tel
Aviv. Five Jews were killed in that attack. As expected, Islamic
Jihad threatens to retaliate sharply for last night's battle.
Arab sources report that an Israeli undercover unit entered the
refugee camp in a car with a PA license plate, and then besieged the
house of one of the terrorists.

M was with a girlfriend in the Old City near Jaffa Gate when the two girls saw
an Arab male suddenly attack from behind a young Jewish Rabbinical student, stab him in the
back, then in the front, and then flee.
The friend of M tried to treat the victim (unfortunately without success)
while M ran to call an ambulance which arrived after an inexplicable delay.
In the meantime the Arab shopkeepers stood around refusing to help and exhibiting
indifference or hostility.
Shmuel Matt (spelt "Mett" in Jerusalem Post report), 21, was described in the Orthodox press as a member of an important Jewish family
in Britain.

Manhunt underway for J'lem stabber

A massive police manhunt was underway Thursday for an Arab man who stabbed 21-year-old British yeshiva student Shmuel Mett to death and seriously wounded a classmate with a large kitchen knife in a terror attack in Jerusalem's Old City.
Mett's funeral will begin at 5 p.m. from his yeshiva.
The Wednesday night attack came just a day after Israel completed its pullout from the Gaza Strip and four West Bank settlements.
The assailant fled the scene, after hurling the 30 cm long knife on the ground.
The joint police-Shin Bet manhunt for the suspected Arab terrorist gathered steam Thursday after it was determined that the attack was caught on police surveillance cameras positioned in the Old City, with the assailant believed to be hiding somewhere in Jerusalem, security officials said.
The two victims of the stabbing attack, who studied at the city's Mir Yeshiva, were rushed by Magen David Adom paramedics to Hadassah University Hospital at Ein Karem and Jerusalem's Sha'are Tzedek Hospital.
Mett died on the operating table in the intensive care unit of Hadassah Hospital just over an hour later, having never regained consciousness.
Mett came to Jerusalem from Britain to study about a year and a half ago. Rabbi Binyamin Carlebach, head of the Mir Yeshiva, related that he would get up every morning at 4:00 to study. He was engaged several months ago and was planning to marry in three months.
Mett is also survived by two brothers and a sister, residing in Israel.
According to an initial police investigation of the 8:20 p.m. attack, Sammy Weissbard, who was stabbed while walking with Mett just inside the Jaffa Gate on David Street managed to make his way to a nearby Old City police station to report the stabbing. Police officers rushed to the scene, on the edge of the Muslim Quarter, and found a second, critically wounded victim -Mett- lying on the ground with a stab wound under his stomach.
Mett was unconscious with stab wounds to his stomach area, paramedic Hanan Chovev said. Weissbard also sustained stab wounds to his stomach, but was conscious, according to paramedic Bosmat Ya'acov.
A hospital spokeswoman said Thursday that Weissbard was in stable condition and was expected to make a full recovery.
A large police manhunt was immediately launched for the suspected Arab terrorist and continued into the night.
At the site of the attack, a small memorial was set up. Nearby, vandals scrawled anti-Arab graffiti and calls for revenge.
The Jerusalem stabbing was the second in the capital in just over a month.
Last month, a 30-year-old Israeli who was sitting with his girlfriend at a popular Jerusalem promenade was stabbed in the foot by an Arab assailant who remains at large.

Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom sent US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice a
letter offering assistance and expressing sympathy for the devastation
caused by Hurricane Katrina a day after a State Department spokesman said
that Rice had not received any calls from her colleagues abroad.
"Please allow me to express my condolences to you and to the people of the
United States of America on the loss of life and the terrible pain and
destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina," Shalom wrote.
"As we all stand in awe at the great force of nature unleashed on the shores

Higher Death Toll Seen; Police Ordered to Stop Looters

NEW ORLEANS, Aug. 31 - Chaos gripped New Orleans on Wednesday as looters ran wild, food and water supplies dwindled, bodies floated in the floodwaters, the evacuation of the Superdome began and officials said there was no choice but to abandon the city devastated by Hurricane Katrina, perhaps for months.
President Bush pledged vast assistance but acknowledged, "This recovery will take years."
For the first time, a New Orleans official suggested the scope of the death toll. Mayor C. Ray Nagin said the hurricane might have killed thousands in his city alone, an estimate that, if correct, would make it the nation's deadliest natural disaster since the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire, which killed up to 6,000 people.
"We know there is a significant number of dead bodies in the water," and others hidden from view in attics and other places, Mayor Nagin told reporters. Asked how many, he said: "Minimum, hundreds. Most likely, thousands."
As survivors struggled with a disaster that left damage of up to $25 billion, a gargantuan relief effort began. Ships, planes, helicopters and convoys of supplies and rescue teams converged on the Gulf Coast, and Pentagon officials said 30,000 National Guard and active-duty troops would be deployed by this weekend in the largest domestic relief effort by the military in the nation's history.
With police officers and National Guard troops giving priority to saving lives, looters brazenly ripped open gates and ransacked stores for food, clothing, television sets, computers, jewelry and guns, often in full view of helpless law-enforcement officials. Dozens of carjackings, apparently by survivors desperate to escape, were reported, as were a number of shootings.
On Wednesday night, Mayor Nagin ordered 1,500 police officers, most of the city's force, to turn from search and rescue to stopping the looting.
"They are starting to get closer to the heavily populated areas - hotels, hospitals - and we're going to stop it right now," he said in a statement issued to The Associated Press.
New Orleans, a city of 500,000, mostly below sea level and reliant on levees along the Mississippi River running south of it and Lake Pontchartrain to the north, was a nightmarish waterworld that Mr. Nagin said would have to be abandoned while the levees were repaired and the city drained.
He called for a "total evacuation," adding: "We have to. The city will not be functional for two or three months."
Total recovery appeared to be far more remote. Officials of the Army Corps of Engineers said that it would be weeks or months before the city could be pumped dry and that it would take years to rebuild its thousands of homes and businesses, its streets, highways and other infrastructure, an investment that could cost billions of dollars and perhaps never recover the rich cultural heritage of New Orleans.
In Mississippi, at least 110 people were dead, hundreds of waterfront homes and businesses were destroyed, nearly a million homes were without power and dozens of casinos built on barges were heavily damaged or wrecked, depriving 14,000 people of jobs and the state of $500,000 a day in tax revenues. In Biloxi, looters rifled casino slot machines for coins and ransacked other businesses. The city of Gulfport was almost destroyed, and Biloxi was heavily damaged.
In Alabama, more than 400,000 homes and businesses were without power, flooding reached 11 feet in Mobile and hundreds of homes along the eastern shore of Mobile Bay were flooded. Florida, struck by the eastern edge of the cartwheeling storm on Monday, reported 11 deaths, and more than 100,000 homes and businesses were still without power.
Returning to Washington from a Texas vacation, Mr. Bush flew over the stricken area for a first-hand look at the destruction and at a news conference later on Wednesday said his administration was committed to the relief and recovery effort.

DESCRIPTION OF CONTENTS
"Mohammed Wept. Response to Islam" (Introduction and Chapter One) describes how the Egyptians are sueing Israel because more than three thousand years ago the Ancient Hebrews took Egyptian goods with them when they came out of Egypt. This reflects Muslim mentality. Under Islam women are severely abused and minorities (such as the Christians) oppressed.
"Mohammed Wept" (Chapter Two) tells in detail how: According to true Islam Jihad must be declared by a central authority; Victory must be certain; The British and the Jews have given much including tribute to Muslims. Those who have given tribute, must be given protection. Jihad is no longer a military concept but one of spiritual rejuvenation. Suicide acts are prohibited except under duress and threat of annihilation. No such state has ever been declared.
"Mohammed Wept" (Chapter Three) says that real Islam should recognize the Zionist Jewish right to the Land of Israel and gives quotations from Muslims who support Israel.
"Mohammed Wept" (Chapter Four) explains that many of the basic ideas of Islam derive from Judaism and that in its true form Islam may most correctly be interpreted along lines consistent with Jewish principles.
"Mohammed Wept" (Chapter Five) relates that the original doctrine of Islam has been polluted by foreign acretions.
"Mohammed Wept" (Chapter Six) informs us that the Palestinian Arab Leadership wants primarily to exterminate the Jews and all other aims are secondary.
"Mohammed Wept" (Chapter Seven) imparts the information that the Arabs do not keep treaties and cannot be expected to do so.
"Mohammed Wept" (Chapter Eight): Diplomacy does not work with the Arabs, only violence. That is what they advocate and what they understand.
"Mohammed Wept" (Chapter Nine): The existence of "Palestine" as a separate entity is a myth created mainly as a weapon to use against Israel.
"Mohammed Wept" (Chapter Ten): While the Palestinians continue to support terrorism and act like the lowest type of criminal the Jews are in danger of self-demoralisation due to wishful thinking and misplaced liberalism.
"Mohammed Wept" (Chapter Eleven): The Muslims are not interested in territorial concessions. They want everything. A War of Genocide is being waged against Israel. The Demographic Demon is a Scarecrow. Israel needs all the land it has and more. Most Palestinians would prefer to move elsewhere, to a non-Arab country, some would want to convert to Judaism if given a chance. Transfer of the Arab population is the most humane solution.
"Mohammed Wept" (Chapter Twelve): The Palestinian Terrorists are murderers and nothing more than that. The world has a double standard. The attitude of the Palestinians towards Israel would not be tolerated by other nations if they were in Israel's position.
"Mohammed Wept" (Chapter Thirteen): A military solution may be the only one possible. Israel must fight to survive. Leading members of other religions also acknowledge the right of Israel to exist. There are Neo-Conservatives who are pro-Israel, Christian Zionists, and Muslim Zionists. Christians should be Pro-Jewish and Pro-Israel. Yair Davidy and Brit-Am are working for support of a Greater Israel.
"Mohammed Wept" (Chapter Fourteen): Repentance is possible for everybody. We can all change ourselves and the world for the better through prayer, effort, and repentance.
"Mohammed Wept" (Chapter Fifteen): We must learn from history. In order to survive Israel must confront Islam. Unless the hate propaganda of the Arab side ceases war will break out. The Jewish victims of Arab terror were often very worthy people whose memories should be consecrated. We are owed an apology for Oslo.

U.S. COURT FREEZES ALL PA AND PLO ASSETS

Nineteen months after a U.S. Federal Court awarded $116 million to the
parents and children of a victim of Arab terrorism, the same court has
frozen all PA assets in the U.S. - $3.5 billion worth.
In January 2004, the Rhode Island Federal Court ruled that Hamas and
the Palestinian Authority must pay $116 million to the parents and
children of Yaron and Efrat Ungar. Yaron, an American citizen, and
his wife Efrat were murdered in an Arab terrorist drive-by shooting in
1996, near the city of Beit Shemesh. The couple's two sons, who were
1 and 2 years old at the time, have grown up with Efrat's
grandparents, Rabbi Uri and Yehudit Dasberg of Alon Shvut.
Yehudit Dasberg (pictured) told Arutz-7 today, "We're thrilled that at
least an American court knows how to deal with terrorism."
The court awarded the two children $30.5 million each, and $15 million
to the Dasberg grandparents, in the framework of U.S. terrorism laws.
However, repeated attempts by the Dasbergs' lawyer, Atty. David
Strachman, to effect the payment were thwarted. "The PLO knows many
tricks, and they used them," Mrs. Dasberg said.
"Finally," she said, "our lawyer was visiting here a couple of weeks
ago, and I suggested to him that he approach the judge and tell him
that it's no longer just an issue of our not getting paid - it's also
a question of respect for U.S. law. The PLO is simply trampling the
law. Strachman liked the idea, contacted the court, and within a
week, the freeze-order was issued. This is a major thing, something
on State Department level, because all U.S. banks are now forbidden
from honoring even a small check written by the PLO. This order is
completely stopping all their diplomatic activity in the U.S. - as one
of their representatives complained to our lawyer on the phone."
Despite the enormous amounts of assets that were frozen - more than 30
times the amount awarded in damages - Mrs. Dasberg is not optimistic
that the PA will pay the money in the very near future. "The
disengagement has had so many negative ripple effects," she said, "and
this is another one: It has emboldened the Arabs on many fronts, and
they see no reason to give in. They will fight it, and try to take it
to the Supreme Court... On the other hand, Bush wants to be known as
a great fighter against terrorism, so he will have a hard time if his
government retracts a decision against a terrorist organization. So
we will see."
Mrs. Dasberg said that she would give up her claim to the money if the
PA would simply agree to have the lands of Tzurif - an Arab village
near Gush Etzion where the murderous terrorists were based -
confiscated. "But they will of course never agree to this," she said.
"I would even suffice with the handing over of a mosque."
She noted that Tzurif is remembered in infamy as the source of many
cruel terror attacks, beginning in early 1948 ago with the famous
"Lamed Heh" - the 35 Jews who were cruelly butchered while on their
way to deliver food and supplies to the Etzion bloc.
More recently, Tzurif murderers carried out the Apropos cafe attack in
Tel Aviv in which three women were killed in 1997, kidnapped and
murdered Sharon Edry in September 1996 - his body was only discovered
seven months later - and committed the drive-by murders of IDF Dr. Oz
Tivon and Sgt. Yaniv Shimol in Jan. 1996, of Ze'ev, Uri, and Rachel
Munk in July 1996, and of the Ungar couple in June 1996. The late
Tourism Minister and IDF Maj.-Gen. Rehavam Ze'evi said in 1997 that
the village deserves to be "wiped off the face of the earth."
BE´ER SHEVA SUICIDE TERRORIST HAD BEEN FREED BY ISRAEL

The terrorist who blew himself up in Be'er Sheva a week ago, seriously
wounding two guards, was released in 2004 as part of a prisoner
exchange with the PA - over the protests of right-wing groups.
The terrorist, Iman Hasin Muhammed Zakik, had been serving a 52-month
sentence for smuggling weapons when he was released. Under the terms
of the internationally-brokered exchange, Israel released over 400
Arab prisoners in return for hostage Elchanan Tenenbaum and the bodies
of three Israeli soldiers murdered by Hizbullah.
The Terrorism Research Legal Center, which released the information,
and the Almagor Terror Victims Association filed a court petition
against the exchange at the time. Their appeal was rejected.
Zakik was freed six months before his term was to expire, thus that he
would have been out of jail in any event by now. But, sources at the
Center explain, the "revolving door" policies that allow for the quick
release of terrorists from prison encourage terrorists to return to
their ways, and detracts from Israel's deterrent power against them.
This was not the first attack perpetrated by a terrorist who was freed
from Israeli prison. Almagor has documented many cases of terrorists
who were released in similar exchanges who returned to their terrorist
ways. "There were four big terrorist releases," said Atty. Ze'ev
Dasberg, representing Almagor, "and each one caused another calamity
to the country."
PA HAS DOUBLE AMOUNT OF ALLOWED WEAPONS

The PA has about 40,000 weapons, double the number permitted by the
1995 Oslo accords, a senior IDF officer said. The number does not
include a huge arsenal of Islamic Jihad and Hamas terrorists.
"If the Oslo accords allow 20,000 weapons for the PA [Palestinian
Authority] force, we reckon that there are close to 40,000 in the
field. I'm not talking about militant groups and terrorist groups,"
according to Lt. Col. Daniel Beaudoin, a senior officer at Coordinator
of Government Activities in Gaza.
He added that the PA does not have the ability to change the terrorist
mentality. "They've been so busy trying to blow us up for last 30
years, and they haven't been putting enough effort into trying to find
some way of building up a viable system. And this is our expectation
for the future….How are we going to bring about change in the
Palestinian police force? How are you going to deal with kidnappings
of internationals in order to release some guy who was apprehended
because he ripped off his car?"
The IDF officer warned that Gaza could "burst at the seams with RPGs
within six months."
Israel also faces increased terrorism in the north where Hezbollah
terrorist leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah has claimed his organization
has 12,000 rockets capable of striking northern Israel.
ABBAS ENCOURAGES STUDENTS TO BE MARTYRS

Palestinian Authority (PA) chairman Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) spoke to
Gaza students and praised martyrs, including suicide terrorists, who
die "according to a national order."
"They receive their reward in the Garden Of Eden," Abbas told the
students returning to school. He reminded them that martyrs and
suicide terrorists "brought about the withdrawal from Gaza." His
comments came only three months after he told the American ABC
television network that suicide bombings are a matter of the past.

One reason might be that Judaism teaches that we are not supposed to speculate about cause and effect. Rather it is incumbent on every individual to repent, whether or not what they did or did not do had any bearing on what happened.

1. The disengagement was not part of the road map.
2. It was totally an idea originated by Ariel Sharon. He went to Washington to sell the idea.
3. Plenty of people have accused Sharon of inventing the disengagement in order to
a. avoid the road map.
b. get focus off his own crimes.
c. provide the opportunity for unprecedented attacks against the Palestinians.
4. Sharon solicited funds from the US of his own accord. The US has become a nice bank account. When we are in need of money, all we have to do is come up with some peace-making scheme, sell it in Washington, and then request funds for it. The US hasn't held any money over Israel's head if they didn't implement the disengagement. On the other hand, they have held other, unrelated monies over Israel's head if they didn't do certain things with respect to the fence. But this was never the case with the disengagement. Sharon did exactly what he initiated, planned, and desired.
Many fail to remember that Sharon campaigned with promises of 'painful concessions'. I, for one, was not blurry-eyed because of his affiliation with Likud. To me, 'painful concessions' meant giving away land, so I never voted for him. The disengagement, or something similar, was in his mind before he ever took office and went and talked to Bush as PM the first time.
Brit-Am Comment: Quite a few postings have reached on the above subject but we have refrained
from publishing most of them.
Concerning the above I would like to remark:
a. Cause and Effect: Both the Bible and the Sages do say that more often than not bad results come from bad deeds.
The Book of Job speaks of exceptions that we cannot understand but they remain exceptions.
The Sages said that when calamity or suffering come upon a person they should examine their deeds.
b. The Disengagement according to Newpaper reports at the time was followed by the US administration and encouraged by it.
The strong impression was that any backtracking on the subject would meet with vigorous disapproval.

The Disengagement was in response to this plan and may even be considered an attempt to pre-empt or derail it by proving that Israel is going as far as it possibly can and still there is no partner.
Both the Road Map in its intent and the Disengagement in its effects are evil.
d. Transfer of Arabs. Why is the US not prepared to subsidize the transfer of Arabs out of Israel instead of backing the expulsion of Jews?
e. The Disengagement was possible because very powerful elements in Israeli society backed it. Nevertheless it could possibly have been stopped
where it not for international pressure and the application of funds and support by the EU and others to strategically important sectors.
f. Sharon Needs Money for Israel and this was a way to get it? Maybe. I do not know.
Why should the US administration be prepared to give Israel money for Israel to hurt itself?
I believe that in the past the USA has been blessed for helping Israel.
g. Is Katrina a punishment for Katif? Maybe or maybe a punishment was building up for many reasons and
US involvement on the side of the enemies of Israel in Katif touched it off.
Or maybe not.

LIVNAT: DEFY U.S. AND BUILD NOW IN YESHA

Education Minister Limor Livnat signaled a further swing to the right
on Tuesday, challenging the Sharon government to defy the U.S. and
start building more housing units in Ma'aleh Adumim.
"The great United States is our friend, but there are times when we
have to say, even to the United States, that we will act in accordance
with our interests," Livnat told Israel Government Radio. She noted
that implicit in declarations by U.S. President George W. Bush that
Israel can expect to retain the city "is the necessity and
acceptability of building up the settlement blocs."
Livnat said the expulsion of Jewish residents from Gaza and northern
Samaria presents Israel with "a window of opportunity" to strengthen
larger population centers in Judea and Samaria.
The city of Ma'aleh Adumim, located 3.5 miles east of Jerusalem, has
become politically significant as a fundamental test of different
policies of Israel, the United States and the Palestinian Authority
(PA). Israel intends to include the city inside the security fence and
provide contiguous Jewish presence from Ma'aleh Adumim to Jerusalem.
Expansion of the city also would prevent the Palestinian Authority
(PA) from establishing a contiguous north-south link between Ramallah
and Jerusalem, which the PA wants to declare as capital of a new Arab
state. The Bush administration has stated that Israel should retain
major population centers in Judea and Samaria but also has maintained
that their fate will be determined by negotiations.
Sharon, who is trying to fend off the contenders, also is promoting
building large population centers in Judea and Samaria while
refraining from offending the American government.

ANTI-CHRISTIAN POGROM
IN THE WEST BANK
For years, media outlets have largely refused to report one of the most troubling aspects of the Mideast conflict Muslim intimidation and violence against Christians in Palestinian-controlled areas.
The latest shocking episode again made its way to very few news consumers: Late Saturday night (Sept. 3), hundreds of armed Palestinian Muslims crying 'Allahu Akbar' descended on the West Bank Christian city of Taibe. For the next few hours, the mob terrorized the community, setting sixteen homes and multiple businesses on fire, looting valuables from both...
Said one eyewitness: 'It was like a war, they arrived in groups, and many of them were holding clubs.'
The mob's 'provocation'? A Muslim woman from their neighboring village had had a relationship with a Christian man from Taibe. The woman was poisoned to death by her own family in an 'honor killing', and soon after, the pogrom against Taibe commenced.
Something tells us this incident would have made international headlines had Jews been responsible for this type of violence.

I am a fellow believer in Sarasota Florida. We have been blessedly PASSED over by 6 hurricanes. We would be willing to house an individual or family left homeless from Katrina. I have been unable to contact any congregations there as I do not know if there are any from that area. I thought you might know how to get me in touch so that we may be of some help. No one should have to spend the High Holy days in that kind of diaspera.

ISRAEL LEAVES GAZA; ARABS RUSH TO BURN SYNAGOGUES

"We are leaving Gaza with our heads raised," the Chief of Staff,
Lt.-Gen. Dan Halutz, said at last night's withdrawal ceremony.
Just this morning, a Kassam rocket was fired at the Negev border city
of Sderot; no one was hurt.
In the early afternoon hours, reports of another Kassam rocket towards
Yad Mordechai were heard, just north of Gaza. The Red Dawn
early-warning alarm system was activated, sending residents to their
shelters for a brief period.
As the Israeli flag was being lowered over Gaza to mark the end of
Israel's 38-year-presence in the area, teenaged Arabs threw rocks at
IDF troops near the demolished N'vei Dekalim community. Four Arabs
were reported injured in the clash.
During the midnight hours, mobs began swarming onto several
formerly-Jewish areas even before the last Israeli soldiers had left.
They mobs poured into N'vei Dekalim, Morag, Kfar Darom and Netzarim,
setting out for the synagogues and trying to burn them down. The
buildings are mainly concrete and therefore did not catch fire, but
black smoke continues to darken the skies above the former Jewish
towns. The IDF had hung orange signs on the 21 synagogues in Gush
Katif, declaring them a "holy place."
The United States, which takes credit for disseminating the concepts
of freedom of religion and respect for religious sites, condemned
Israel for its decision not to destroy Jewish places of worship in
Gaza.
Former Gush Katif spokesman Eran Sternberg warned that the PA's
enabling of the burning of the synagogues gives an "appearance of
legitimacy for any Jew to strike out against Moslem holy sites,
including the [mosques on the] Temple Mount."
RESPONSES TO THE ARABS´ BURNING OF THE SYNAGOGUES

Many justified the government decision not to blow up the synagogues,
and many were not surprised at the Arabs' violent response. Yesha
Rabbis Council: "This proves it's a religious war."
MK Gila Finkelstein (NRP): "The Palestinians had an unusual
opportunity to show their change by displaying their good will - but
they preferred destruction. More than they want a state, they want to
destroy every Jewish trace."
The Yesha Rabbis Council: "The burning of synagogues by Arab rioters
proves again that this is a religious war, based on a hatred for
Judaism, and not merely political hostility. This is not understood
by our wicked government, which is trying to turn the Jews into a
nation like all the others and detaches itself from Judaism. Only by
connecting to the Torah, Land and Nation of Israel will we deter our
various enemies."
Associated Press reported that PA bulldozers began demolishing the
synagogue in Netzarim early this afternoon.
Former N'vei Dekalim resident Amram Hazut told Maariv/NRG, "We're
dealing with animals, not people. They didn't even wait half-a-minute
to set the synagogues on fire. When they fired at us from mosques, we
didn't touch them [the mosques], even though our lives were
endangered. But for them, everything is permitted."
MODERN ISRAELI HISTORY IN GAZA

The IDF Spokesman's Office issued a timeline of central events that
took place in Gaza when it was under Israel's control from 1967 to
2005.
The press release did not discuss Jewish history in Gaza before 1946.
Gaza is listed in the Bible as being part of the Promised Land
inheritance in Genesis 15, Numbers 34, and Deuteronomy 7 (Rashi).
Prominent Jewish communities existed in Gaza during the period of the
Second Temple, and historical evidence of significant Jewish presence
there exists from the 4th, 7th, and 17th centuries. The remains of a
6th-century synagogue in Gaza were unearthed by archaeologists, and
remains of a Gaza synagogue existed until the 1990's. The Jewish
community in Gaza was evacuated by the British in 1929, when the Jews
were threatened by the Muslims who waged pogroms around the country.

JERUSALEM An Israeli archaeologist says she has uncovered in East
Jerusalem what she believes may be the fabled palace of the biblical
King David.
Her work has been sponsored by the Shalem Center, a neoconservative
think tank in Jerusalem, and funded by an American Jewish investment
banker who would like to help provide scientific support for the
Bible as a reflection of Jewish history.
Other scholars who have toured the site are skeptical that the
foundation walls Eilat Mazar has discovered are David's palace. But
they acknowledge that what she has uncovered is rare and important -
a major public building from around the 10th century B.C. with
pottery shards that date from the time of David and Solomon and a
government seal of an official mentioned in the Book of Jeremiah.
For nearly 10 years, Mazar thought she knew where the fabled palace
built for King David, as described in the Bible, might be - just
outside the walls of the ancient city of Jerusalem. Now she thinks
she has found it, and if she has right, her discovery will be a new
salvo in a major dispute in biblical archaeology - whether or not
the kingdom of David was of historical importance.
For that theory, the Bible is a relatively accurate guide, but some
question whether David was more like a small tribal chieftain,
reigning over another dusty hilltop.
Her discovery is also bound to be used in the other major battle
over Jerusalem. That is the disagreement about whether the Jews have
their deepest origins there and thus have some special hold on the
place, or whether, as many Palestinians believe, the notion of a
Jewish origin in Jerusalem is a religious myth used to justify
occupation and colonialism. Among those who subscribed to the latter
view was the late Yasser Arafat.
Hani Nur el-Din, a professor of archaeology at Al Quds University,
says that Palestinian archaeologists consider biblical archaeology
as an effort by Israeli archaeologists "to fit historical evidence
into a biblical context," he said. "The link between the historical
evidence and the biblical narration, written much later, is largely
missing," he said. "There's a kind of fiction about the 10th
century. They try to link whatever they find to the biblical
narration. They have a button and they want to make a suit out of
it."
Other Israeli archaeologists are not so sure that Mazar has found
the palace - the house that Hiram, king of Tyre, built for the
victorious king, at least as Samuel II, Chapter 5, describes it. It
may also be the Fortress of Zion that David conquered from the
Jebusites, who ruled Jerusalem before him, or some other structure
about which the Bible is silent.
But Mazar's colleagues know that she has found something
extraordinary - the partial foundations of a sizable public
building, constructed in the Phoenician style, dating from the 10th
to 9th centuries B.C., the time of the united kingdom of David and
Solomon.
"This is a very significant discovery, given that Jerusalem as the
capital of the united kingdom is very much unknown," said Gabriel
Barkay, a renowned archaeologist of Jerusalem from Bar-Ilan
University. "Very carefully we can say that this is one of the first
greetings we have from the Jerusalem of David and Solomon, a period
which has played a kind of hide-and-seek with archaeologists for the
last century."
Mazar, 48, is the granddaughter of Benjamin Mazar, a famous
archaeologist with whom she trained. She got her doctorate from
Hebrew University, is the widow of an archaeologist and has worked
on and supervised dozens of digs on her own.
"Archaeology is technical, but you dig with a mind open to
historical sources, and anything can help," she said, as she
clambered over massive stones at bedrock. "I work with the Bible in
one hand and the tools of excavation in the other, and I try to
consider everything."
Based on the chapter from Samuel II, but also on the work of a
century of archaeology in this spot, Mazar speculated that the
famous stepped-stone structure excavated previously was part of the
fortress David conquered, and that his palace would have been built
just outside the original walls of the cramped city, to the north,
on the way to what his son, Solomon, built as the Temple Mount.
"When the Philistines came to fight, the Bible said that David went
down from his house to the fortress," she said, her eyes
bright. "Maybe it meant something, maybe not. But I wondered, down
from where? Presumably from where he lived, his palace. So I said,
maybe there's something here," and in 1997 wrote a paper proposing a
new excavation in the spot, which is in East Jerusalem.
Mazar is building on the archaeologists who went before her,
especially Robert Macalister in the 1920s, Kathleen Kenyon in the
1960s and Yigal Shilo in the 1970s and 1980s. Kenyon had found
evidence of well-worked stones and protoaeolic capitals, which
decorated the tops of columns, evidence of a large, decorative
building.
David's palace was the topic of a last conversation she had with her
famous grandfather, who died 10 years ago, she said. "He
said, 'Kenyon found the protoaeolic capitals, so go and find where
she found them, and start there."' Five months ago, with special
funding and permissions from the Ir David Foundation, which controls
the site (and also supports Jews moving into East Jerusalem), and
academic sponsorship from Hebrew University, she finally began to
dig - finding evidence of this monumental public building dating
from the time of David and Solomon.
Amihai Mazar, a renowned professor of archaeology at Hebrew
University, calls the find "something of a miracle." He believes the
building may be the Fortress of Zion that David is said to have
conquered, and where he lived for a time, and which he renamed the
City of David. "The interpretation will be debated," he said. "But
the achievement is great. What she found is fascinating whatever it
is."
Mazar is Eilat Mazar's second cousin - his father was her
grandfather's brother. But he has his own reputation to protect,
beyond any family loyalty.
There is a debate among archaeologists "to what extent Jerusalem was
an important city or even a city in the time of David and Samuel,"
he said. "Some believe it was tiny and the kingdom unimportant."
The site of ancient Jerusalem, stuck between two valleys, on a ridge
south of the Temple Mount - is very small, less than 10 acres.
Israel Finkelstein, a renowned archaeologist, has suggested that
without significant evidence of a 10th-century occupation, Jerusalem
in this period was "perhaps not more than a typical hill country
village."
In his book, "The Bible Unearthed," he writes with Neil
Silberman, "not only was any sign of monumental architecture
missing, but so were even simple pottery shards."
Eilat Mazar believes she has found a riposte: a large public
building of that period, with at least some pottery of the time, and
a bulla, or governmental seal, of an official - Jehucal, son of
Shelemiah, son of Shevi - mentioned at least twice in the book of
Jeremiah.

Much would be different had George W. Bush not decided to invade Iraq.
In some ways, the situation would be worse:
The Iraqi population would still suffer under the totalitarian rule of Saddam Hussein. The shaky economy, car bombs and ethnic unrest that Iraqis face today are far lesser evils compared with the poverty, injustice, brutality and barbarism that was their fate between 1979 and 2003.
Regional security would be imperiled. Saddam Hussein invaded two countries (Iran in 1980, Kuwait in 1990) and launched missiles against two others (Saudi Arabia, Israel); the chances are high that he would aggress again, perhaps this time to impede oil routes through the Persian Gulf. Additionally, he sponsored suicide terrorism against Israel and maintained close relations with the thug regime of Bashar al-Asad of Syria.
U.S. security would be endangered so long as a megalomaniac ruled Iraq with the means to build and the will to use weapons of mass destruction. Hussein showed this capability as early as 1988, when he several times deployed chemical gas, even against his own people (in a village in 1988, killing 5,000). His links to al-Qaeda might have led to his cooperating with it to deploy WMD in the United States.
But, had the war not taken place, the situation in other ways might be better:
European attitudes toward the United States would be improved. Polling and other data demonstrate that the Iraq war inflamed an international hostility against Americans unprecedented since 1945.
Muslim unrest has been exacerbated by the war. A powerful radicalization has been apparent not only in majority-Muslim countries (Turkey, Jordan and Pakistan are good examples) but also in Western countries (such as the United Kingdom).
Domestic U.S. politics would be less fractious without the war. The post-9/11 solidarity had already frayed before the Iraqi war began in March 2003, but that decision worsened tensions, as symbolized by the heightened acrimony in the U.S. presidential elections of 2004.
To generalize, benefits of the war have been mainly security-related and the costs mainly attitudinal. The world is safer with Hussein awaiting trial in a jail cell, but also more divided. The Bush administration succeeded militarily but failed politically.
On balance, the war brought more positives than negatives; unpopularity and acrimony are a price worth paying so that the Iraqi government no longer endangers Iraqis or the rest of the world.
Brit-Am Comment: The US presence in Iraq and all that springs from it has strengthened the geo-strategic potential of the US several times
over and this is possibly the main reason other nations are against it.
It has also helped ensure future US economic well being and security by securing petroleum sources.
This does not mean that things could not turn bad or that disasters will not happen but it does mean
that all other things being equal the US is in a better position and so is the State of Israel
and so are other Israelite nations.

A planet larger than Pluto has been discovered in the outlying regions of the solar system.
The planet was discovered using the Samuel Oschin Telescope at Palomar Observatory near San Diego, Calif. The discovery was announced today by planetary scientist Dr. Mike Brown of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, Calif., whose research is partly funded by NASA.
The planet is a typical member of the Kuiper belt, but its sheer size in relation to the nine known planets means that it can only be classified as a planet, Brown said. Currently about 97 times further from the sun than the Earth, the planet is the farthest-known object in the solar system, and the third brightest of the Kuiper belt objects.
"It will be visible with a telescope over the next six months and is currently almost directly overhead in the early-morning eastern sky, in the constellation Cetus," said Brown, who made the discovery with colleagues Chad Trujillo, of the Gemini Observatory in Mauna Kea, Hawaii, and David Rabinowitz, of Yale University, New Haven, Conn., on January 8.

The War of 1812 had been an utter failure for the young United States. It was supposed to have resulted in the conquest of the main British territories on the North American continent, Upper and Lower Canada, and to clear British occupation forces out of the northwestern United States, what are now Chicago and Indiana.
Instead, the invasion of Canada had been thwarted entirely, British forces had invaded upstate New York, sacked Washington, burned the Executive Mansion (which retained these scars until the early 1900's when Teddy Roosevelt whitewashed and repaired it, renaming it the White House); the American government had fled to Philadelphia and American shipping had been blockaded.
Peace commissioners had been sent to Ghent, Belgium, where they negotiated a treaty that had ended this disaster, and the treaty was traveling home in a vessel when 1814 rounded into 1815. The British navy, not knowing this, sent a fleet of 50 ships carrying 5,000 marines to attack the underbelly of the United States, New Orleans. They ran into a surprise. An American army commanded by Andrew Jackson, armed with muskets, cannons and squirrel guns had fortified the city.
The British marines marched forward in a frontal assault on the American fortifications. They were mowed down by the Americans and broke ranks, fleeing back to their ships anchored off the Gulf of Mexico. In the end, they lost 2,000 dead, including their commander. The American defenders lost 71 casualties.
The spirit of the victory was captured in the song, "The Battle of New Orleans", sung by Johnny Horton:
And they ran through the briars and they ran through the brambles;,
And they ran through the bushes where a rabbit wouldn't go.
They ran so fast that the hounds couldn't catch 'em
From the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico.
By the time the bad news of the Treaty of Ghent had reached the shores of the United States, the news of the victory at New Orleans had spread countrywide. Even though the American victory did not change the result of the war, it recast it entirely in the eyes of Americans.
After the British had sacked Washington in 1814, they had continued up the Delaware to attempt to conquer Baltimore. An American lawyer watched the bombardment of Fort McHenry, which defended Baltimore. He wrote a poem about what he had seen through the night, called "The Star Spangled Banner". Later, at an inn, he heard a drinking song, "Anacreon in Heaven". He shoe horned his poem into the melody of the drinking song, which eventually became the standard anthem at baseball games. In 1931, Francis Scott Key's poem replaced the knock off of "G-d Save the Queen" that had been the national anthem of the United States for decades.
In Troy, New York, the elderly man who handed out muskets and ammunition to the soldiers got the nickname Uncle. His name was Sam. "Uncle Sam" became the symbol of the United States, a country that decimated the enemies who attacked it, and could not be defeated on the battlefield.
This was what came of the victory at New Orleans. It was so effective at wiping away the stink of failure from Mr. Madison's War, that it developed a sense of national pride and spirit that carried the Americans all the way across the continent, bringing American soldiers to Mexico City in 1848. Americans carried in them a sense of "Manifest Destiny", a sense that G-d had graced the brow of America with His blessings and that it was Americans' job to bring those blessings to the world.
The day came that Americans came to liberate Europe from its oppressors. American soldiers had bases in Britain, the nation that had attacked New Orleans, and the British were grateful for them. By the time I was a child 50 years ago, the War of 1812 was lauded in schoolbooks as "A Second War of Independence". This was the effect of the Battle of New Orleans fought in January of 1815.
The belief that G-d had blessed America, so eloquently expressed in the song "America the Beautiful", was real. Not since
1815, has a foreign force occupied American soil, with the exception of the Japanese occupation of a number of islands off Alaska, and some American territories in the Pacific. The tragedies that seemed to hit the world with alarming frequency seemed not to hit America. America was the land of opportunity where tempest tossed millions poured in and sought refuge. And by and large, they prospered.
As a child, I grew up in the richest nation on earth, the richest nation that had ever existed in the history of Man. It seemed to all go wrong during the years that the American army was sent to Vietnam. A sense of purpose had been lost or misplaced, and the American military, the vaunted mighty force that had defeated all before it, was itself defeated.
The years of my young adulthood were years during which basic ideals and national purposes were debated and argued, and a different path was chosen from the one that had previously guided Americans, both in morals and in their view of the world. For a short time in 1991, Americans reclaimed their pride, defeating an Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, and for a shorter time after that, in 2003, Americans proved themselves again, this time ending the regime of a former ally, Saddam Hussein.
However, tragedies of historic proportions have now struck the United States. Half of American marriages end in divorce, leaving a trail of bitterness, uncertainty, and emotionally wounded parents and children. Parents now fear for the safety of their offspring, lest someone, often an estranged spouse, will kidnap them and just drive off into the sunset - and into a photograph on a milk carton.
Medical care in America, the best generally, is also the most expensive, necessitating medical insurance to obtain decent care. Nearly half of the American population does not have this insurance. Fifty years ago, a single individual could, by working one or two jobs, support a family of three children in many parts of the United States. This meant that the father could go to work and the mother could stay home as a homemaker and full-time mother.
Today, this is no longer true. Unless one of the parents is making very good money, both generally have to work to support even a family of two children. In spite of what appears to be fantastic material prosperity, the standard of living in America, as defined by the need to go out into the job market and make money, has declined.
On top of all this, there is now the specter of terrorism stalking the land. In 1993, an attempt was made to destroy the World Trade Center in New York City. In 1995, the federal office building in Oklahoma City was destroyed. In 2001, the World Trade Center in New York was targeted again, this time by jets hitting the building in the air. The two towers that comprised the most visible portion of the World Trade Center collapsed in front of millions of TV viewers worldwide.
Terrible storms have lashed America since 1991. Some have pointed out the eerie coincidence of when these storms have struck - often when American administrations were forcing Israel to concede territory or when American officials were meeting with enemies of the Jewish state. I would ask a reader to take note of these coincidences. But I believe the matter goes far beyond this.
It is my own conclusion that a Divine blessing was bestowed on America in 1815. Its effects were not immediate - they continued to echo through the decades until 1963, through civil war, through industrial growth and industrial disputes, through economic panics, recessions and depressions, and through two world wars that brought America to the apex of its power and real prosperity.
It is also my own conclusion that Hurricane Katrina, in destroying the city of New Orleans, signaled something far deeper than the destruction it wrought. Hurricane Katrina was not a tragedy because thousands of lives were lost, even though thousands of lives were lost; not because oil production was halted and energy prices have been caused to spike, even though oil production and refining was halted and energy prices have been caused to spike - something that will cause inestimable damage to America's economy.
Hurricane Katrina was a tragedy not because thousands of people have been made homeless, even though thousands have been made homeless and destitute; not because the Federal Emergency Management Administration - a bloated and over-funded bureaucracy - has been shown to be helpless and inadequate, even though this has in fact been the case. This hurricane was a tragedy not because the American government was guilty of criminal negligence in refusing to prepare New Orleans for a foreseeable disaster, even though it has been so negligent.
No.
Hurricane Katrina was a tragedy that will sink slowly into the American psyche because, in my opinion, it signals the cancellation of the blessing granted America in 1815 at the Battle of New Orleans 190 years earlier. It does not take a brilliant mind to conclude that New Orleans was a den of iniquity and sin whose cup was full long before this particular storm struck. The city did not have the nickname "The Big Easy" because of the way eggs were made there.
There had been warnings with other storms, and the local government had paid heed, at least to the natural threats that a repeat of these storms could bring to the city. Plans had been drawn up to fortify the levees, among other things. But the money for these plans was diverted elsewhere, to a quagmire in Mesopotamia, where only body bags measure America's progress in a part of the world that has no use for the ideals that Americans have learned to hold dear.
But why now? Why this storm?
Two possible reasons stand out.
One was that this storm caused the cancellation of a "Gay Pride" bash scheduled to take place over the Labor Day weekend in New Orleans. It may not be politically correct to point this out but in the Bible, homosexual behavior is called an abomination. I do not say this, the Bible does. The Bible is the closest clue we have to G-d's Word. And Americans have sung for decades about the blessings that G-d has bestowed upon them.
A second possible reason, in addition to the one cited above, is the expulsion of Jews from Gush Katif. While the act was done by Israeli troops, and made to look like an Israeli initiative, it was done with the full backing of, and eventually under the pressure of the American leadership. There is another principle enunciated in the Bible - the people pay for the sins of their leaders.
Naturally, others have gotten into the Divine punishment act. The Muslims claim this is punishment for not following the words of Allah and for persecuting Arabs, and other folks make other claims as well, raising issues of global warming, etc.
That's okay. But there are too many eerie similarities between the expulsion of their people from their homes on a massive scale in Gush Katif and New Orleans to be ignored blithely, though many will ignore this and criticize those who don't.
That's also okay. One ignores G-d's warning at his peril, and one shoves G-d from the center of His creation at his peril.
I may be wrong in this analysis. But I know that I have least raised the right kind of question. And because I once lived in America, and once thrilled to her national anthem and sight of her flag, I can only say, "G-d Save America".

Sorry Tamar, but you and your guest are suffering from excessive wishful thinking in believing that a moderate islam can replace the rabid,violent cult that represents most of present day islam.
I'm not an islamic scholar, but since 9-11 I've been trying to learn what these people believe in.
The disturbing conclusion I've come to is that the wahabbis and other extremists have more authority from the quran and hadiths than the moderates. The few verses supporting peace in the quran come from the early years when Muhammad started his religion. Once he felt strong enough, he changed islam into a warrior cult with the goal of conquering the world.
With all the contradictory changes Muhammad made during his reign, a principle of abrogation was applied by islamic scholars, making the later verse the right one if it conflicted with an earlier verse.
Therefore, those early peaceful quranic verses cited by Sheik Pollazzi and other moderates were pushed aside by the jihad verses that came later.
If you have Rabbi Feld on again as a guest, could you ask him why islam became increasingly more violent as they continued to lose wars to Israel? Most clerics in the arab world were able to interpret their losses as caused by lack of faith.
I get the impression that the Rabbi sees the current jihad as a modern phenomenon. But the fact is it started when Muhammad took up the sword to spread his cult. Since then the active jihad has ebbed and flowed depending on economic fortunes.
The problem in our time is that they have billions of dollars of oil revenues to devote to expanding the "house of islam".
The advocates of "peak oil", who believe the middle-east is running out of oil have the only true answer. Once saudi arabia runs out of oil money to finance jihad and dawa the offensive jihad will go into another dormant stage.

HURRICANE Rita strengthened to the most powerful "Category 5" storm last night as more than a million people in the path of its 165mph winds were ordered to flee their homes in Houston and the surrounding coastline.
Hurricane Katrina, which devastated the Gulf Coast region and caused catastrophic flooding in New Orleans just three weeks ago, was a Category 4 storm when it hit land, after dropping from Category 5.
Rita, which picked up strength as it travelled across the Gulf of Mexico, was heading directly for the centre of Texas, threatening widespread destruction to mirror that wrought by its sister storm in Louisiana and Mississippi late last month. Yesterday the death toll from Katrina rose to 1,037.
New Orleans residents have also been told to leave as heavy rains brought by the storm could cause renewed flooding in a city only just pumped dry.
About a million people in the Houston-Galveston area were told to get out by dawn tomorrow, said a spokesman for Bill White, the mayor of Houston. Galveston County, with a population of 267,000, was ordered to be evacuated, along with low-lying, flood-prone areas of Houston, which at its lowest point is just 6ft above sea level.
George Bush, the US president, yesterday pleaded with people to comply with mandatory evacuation orders.
"I urge the citizens to listen carefully to the instructions provided by state and local authorities and follow them," Mr Bush said. "We hope and pray that Hurricane Rita will not be a devastating storm, but we have got to be ready for the worst."
With Rita's landfall expected late tomorrow night or in the early hours of Saturday, possibly at Galveston near Houston, tens of thousands of homeowners and businesses were racing against the clock to board up their properties and move away from coastal areas vulnerable to a storm surge of up to 18ft.
It is not the first time Galveston has had to prepare for the worst. On 8 September, 1900, it was the scene of the deadliest natural disaster in US history when a hurricane killed more than 6,000 people in the city.
"A Category 4 or 5 storm will test all of us," said Rick Perry, the governor of Texas, yesterday. Mr Perry, who has already asked Mr Bush to declare his state a disaster zone in advance of Rita's arrival, added: "We are as prepared as humanly possible for this storm. Katrina got everyone's attention. Particularly after what happened with Katrina, Texas will be taking any warnings very seriously."
Last night, as residents headed out of Texas, the military was heading in. The 300-mile stretch of I-10 highway that leads from New Orleans to Houston was packed with convoys of National Guard Humvees and US Army trucks that have spent the last three weeks assisting the Hurricane Katrina disaster effort.
They were accompanied by military petrol tankers and lorries carrying rations and water.
Officials in neighbouring Louisiana were also watching the storm's projected path nervously. They warn that even if Rita makes landfall in eastern Texas, it could still send enough rain across the state border to breach the levee flood defence system protecting New Orleans and send three or four feet of floodwater back into the city.
On Tuesday, New Orleans was declared "largely dry". More than a trillion gallons of toxic floodwater have been pumped out in the three weeks since Katrina's storm surge first broke the levees. The army has brought in an extra 800 giant sandbags weighing 6,000lb to 15,000lb each and has ordered 2,500 more to shore up low spots on the levees and plug any new breaches.
Preparations underway in Texas last night included the mandatory evacuation of nursing-home residents and hospital patients, the closure of schools and businesses, and the opening of storm shelters that will cater for local residents and many of the quarter of a million Katrina evacuees who fled there from New Orleans.
Many lessons have been learned from what was widely seen as a botched response to the threat of Katrina, and officials are taking care to ensure that the mistakes are not repeated.
In New Orleans, buses that took five days to arrive to evacuate people from New Orleans Convention Centre after Katrina "were there in minutes" on Tuesday, according to Ray Nagin, the city's mayor, who has called for a new evacuation one day after telling displaced residents that they could return.
Before Katrina, there was no military presence to help with the relief effort and help maintain order after the storm had passed. This time, National Guard troops still on the ground in Louisiana and Mississippi are on standby to assist again with Hurricane Rita.
Mr Perry has asked that more than 1,000 of his state's troops be recalled and 20 military helicopters will be available.
Experts at the National Hurricane Centre in Miami say it is still too early to predict with any certainly where Rita, the ninth hurricane of the 2005 season, will strike.
However, the cone of probability is narrowing by the hour and a direct hit somewhere along the Texas coastline, rather than in Mexico or Louisiana, is the most likely eventuality.
Another unwelcome consequence of Rita's approach is a further hike in petrol prices.
More than 130 drilling rigs are in the Gulf of Mexico, and a quarter of the country's oil is refined in Texas.
The threat of disruption to production and supply forced the price of a barrel of crude oil up by $1.15 to $67.35, close to its three-week high.
Meanwhile, the International Monetary Fund said yesterday that the direct toll on US economic growth from Hurricane Katrina would be modest, although higher energy prices would still have an impact.

have still not forwarded funding to Brit-Am in Jerusalem.

Today (Thursday), 29.9.05, will mark five years since the start of the current round of Palestinian violence, during which 26,159 terrorist attacks were perpetrated against Israeli targets, in which 1,060 Israelis were murdered and 6,089 were wounded.

2. Mostly Veteran Front-Line Soldiers Refused to Expel Fellow Jews.
The weekly Hebrew-language newspaper "BeSheVA" published by the Arutz-7 people
(6.10.05) has an article (p.14 ff) by Yochanan Markus and Chagit Rothenberg
examining the rate of refusal to obey orders and participate in the recent expulsion of Jews from
Gush Katif.
The crack front-line unit "Golani" which is also the largest body of elite-grade troops (Paratroop level) in the Israeli Army
had a refusal rate of close to 48%;
the Paratroopers had a rate of ca 25%
Givati (front-line infantry parallel to Golani) ca 20%
Officer and NCO Course cadets ca. 20 or more %.
These are all front-line units.
Within the units themselves there were differences between the different Divisions
and in some cases an overwhelming number of the soldiers refused to have anything in any way to do with
the matter.
The more veteran and experienced the soldiers the higher the rate of refusal.
This is not surprising since it is well known that new fresh recruits to the armed forces (in every army, all over the world)
initially lose much of their individuality and can often be expected to do almost anything they are told to.
The IDF preferred not to publicize this phenomenon.
The front-line units were quietly directed to other duties
in order to avoid unnecessary and destructive confrontation.
In practice those
who were used to evict Jewish citizens came mainly from
the Police Forces and Border Guards, professional (full-time) soldiers from
rearbase service units, and pilot cadets.

A Canadian province and the State of Israel have signed an agreement for water research, which will benefit water-scarce countries worldwide.
The Government of Alberta, Canada has pledged $1 million (Canadian) towards a joint venture with the Jewish National Fund for Israeli and Canadian scientists to research water irrigation and conservation techniques in Israel.
This is the first cooperation of this kind between a Canadian province and JNF-KKL. At a ceremony on Tuesday evening, JNF (Keren Kayemet Le'Yisrael - KKL) World Chairman Yehiel Leket and Alberta Minister of Infrastructure and Transportation, Dr. Lyle Oberg, signed the agreement.
Dr. Oberg is leading an Alberta mission to Israel that has been visiting sites central to Israel's water infrastructure, including the Sapir Station, where the national water carrier transfers water from the Galilee to the Negev; the Beit Shean Valley, where the reservoir system and Jordan River drainage basin are managed; the Shafdan Waste Water Treatment Center; the Besor research and development station; and the Arad Water Recycling Complex Water Desalination Plant.
The Canadian delegation has also been meeting with leading government officials, including Vice-Premier Shimon Peres.
The research conducted by Alberta and Israeli scientists will support Alberta's Water for Life Strategy and will be available worldwide to aid those regions suffering from water scarcity.

AL-QAEDA BASES IN SINAI

Al-Qaeda has built at least one base in Sinai, from where terrorists
are sent to Gaza and from there to Israel. Egypt has done nothing to
stop it, says IDF Intelligence Chief Gen. Ze'evi-Farkash.
Gen. Aharon Ze'evi-Farkash told the Cabinet ministers at their weekly
meeting on Sunday that a gang of the international terrorist
organization Al-Qaeda recently took over a large area in the Sinai
Peninsula. After banishing the residents, they placed mines around
their new base - signaling Egyptian police and army forces not to come
near.
Activities at the base include the training of terrorists and
preparations for sending them to Gaza, from where they can more easily
enter Israel to perpetrate attacks.
A recent article in The
Jordan Times cites reports to the effect that Al-Qaeda has set up
makeshift camps in Sinai's rough terrain and inaccessible peaks just
as it did in Afghanistan's Tora Bora mountains. Debkafile, which
reported on Al-Qaeda's presence in Sinai a week ago, said that
Egyptian forces basically control only the perimeter of Sinai, while
up to half of the interior is exclusively Al-Qaeda-land.
ISRAEL´S PROF. AUMANN WINS NOBEL PRIZE IN ECONOMICS

Prof. Robert J. Aumann of Heb. U. is a co-winner of this year's Nobel
Prize in Economics, for "enhancing our understanding of conflict and
cooperation through game-theory analysis."
Aumann, a religious Jew who grew up in New York City and currently
resides in Jerusalem, won the prestigious prize together with Prof.
Thomas C. Schelling of the University of Maryland. The two
established game theory as the dominant approach towards understanding
conflict and cooperation between countries, individuals and
organizations. They will share the $1.3 million prize.
The official name of the prize, which will be awarded in Stockholm on
Dec. 10, is The Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of
Alfred Nobel. Nobel himself established awards for physics, chemistry,
medicine, peace and literature, and Sweden's central bank added
economics to the list in 1968.
Prof. Yisrael Aharoni, head of the Mathematics Department of the
Jerusalem College of Technology (Machon Lev) in Jerusalem, studied
briefly under Prof. Aumann. Expressing satisfaction at Aumann's Nobel
recognition, Aharoni told Arutz-7, "Three years ago, another Israeli
professor, Daniel Kahneman, won the Economics prize, and he basically
said that economics is all psychology. What's interesting is that
this winner, Prof. Aumann, says basically the opposite, that economics
is all mathematical and logical."

Debka below says that Israel is surprised to learn about Russian military advisors landing in Gaza. I don't know why Israel should be surprised. One week before I arrived in Israel in May to attend the Board of Governors meeting at the Ben Gurion University, Putin was in Gaza and announced that he intended to arm the new Palestinian state. He was already selling advanced missiles to Syria to use in Lebanon. He just informed Condoleezza Rice that he intends to continue selling nuclear technology to Iran and will not join the U.S. at the UN to call for its censorship of Iran's actions.
Sharon was warned and knew of Putin's intent well before his unilateral withdrawal of the IDF from Gaza. As a result, Israel is literally surrounded by a ring of fire today. Egypt, Syria, and Iran all have major weapons systems capable of hitting any spot in Israel. We just haven't had confirmed whether any of these nations now possess some of the 100 plus nuclear weapons missing from Russia's arsenal.
We will soon find out if it will be our weapons that deliver us or the mighty strong right arm of the Almighty or both. May God help us.

The Egyptians and Palestinians deliberately opened the Rafah border crossing from Sinai to Gaza on Yom Kippur Thursday, Oct. 13 ? this time not just for illicit Palestinian and weapons traffic ? but to let in 15 Russian intelligence officers. Officially described as "military advisers" to train Palestinian security forces, their arrival floored Israel.

Arabian efforts to procure or develop weapons of mass destruction.
The Saudi efforts were said to have been a leading concern of the Bush
administration as late as 2003. President George Bush was said to have
expressed worry over WMD proliferation by Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.
In a Jan. 30, 2003 conversation with British Prime Tony Blair, Bush was said
to have relayed his concern over the spread of WMD to Pakistan and Saudi
Arabia. The conversation was reported by Blair's personal secretary Matthew
Rycroft, according to a book entitled "Lawless World" by Philippe Sands.
The book, first reported by the New York Times, quoted Bush in his
conversation with Blair as saying he wanted to "go beyond Iraq in dealing
with WMD proliferation, mentioning in particular Saudi Arabia, Iran, North
Korea and Pakistan." The notes of the conversation were forwarded to British

"What Awaits Samira?"
First: That the real aim of the war on Iraq was to station a permanent American garrison in that country, supported by a local Quisling regime, in order to secure direct control of the vast oil resources of Iraq itself and indirectly of the oil reserves of the region - Saudi Arabia, the other Gulf states and the Caspian basin. No "Mass Destruction Weapons", no "Removal of a blood-thirsty Tyrant", no "Spreading Democracy", no "Axis of Evil".
Second: That the main result of the war will be the breakup of the country into three mutually hostile components - Sunni Arabs, Shiites and Kurds. Whether this breakup of the Iraqi state is disguised as a "loose federation" or in some other way is immaterial. The important point is whether control over the oil resources is vested in the central or the local authorities.
It was clear that the Kurds would settle for nothing less then de facto independence, keeping their oil revenues for themselves. It was also clear that this would arouse the most profound fears in Turkey, Iran and Syria, all of which have an oppressed Kurdish population which dreams of the eventual establishment of a great, united Kurdistan.
It was also clear that the Iraqi Shiite state would be led by religious figures, most of whom have lived in Iran, who would impose the Islamic code of law, the Sharia. These clerics, while not necessarily becoming stooges of Tehran, will certainly lean in that direction. They will, of course, try to keep the huge oil revenues of their region to themselves.
One does not have to be a prophet of Biblical dimensions to have foreseen that the Arab Sunnis would not accept this lying down. In such a "federation" they will lose power and oil revenues, being thrown from the heights of their might into an abyss of impotence. This led to an "insurgency" which grows ten new heads for every one cut off, because it results from an insoluble problem. Neither the Kurdish nor the Shiite leaders are the kind of people who would relinquish any of their long-yearned-for advantages, for the sake of an Iraq they neither loved nor identified with from the start.

c. Sadam was developing unconventional weapons and for decades UN supervisors had been unsuccessfully
attempting to prevent him from doing so. Sadam had employed poisonous gas on Kurdish villages and bombs
on the women and children of his own people.
d. Iraq is recovering and the average Iraqi citizen is far better off than he ever was and most of them realize it.
This does not mean that the USA is not in danger of being faced with local insurgencies it cannot control.
Iraq is a Moslem Arab country and people are not rational. The solution to our mind is for the USA
to maintain its control either directly or through proxies.
e. Sadam was a threat to the Israeli population. It is good for Israel that the USA is in Iraq.
It is also good for the USA and world stability.
All this does not mean that things will not take a turn for the worse.
Anything could happen.

"I believe the main reason the United States was founded 250 years ago was
so that our great country would be in a position to stand with the restored
nation of Israel in these days."
This astonishing point of view was expressed by a North Carolinian
Conservative candidate for the US Congress in conversation with an American
pastor friend early in 2004.
Apparently, David Huffman believed that when, in the early 17th century,
God moved on the hearts of men to leave England and make their way west
across the Atlantic, it was in His mind to plant a new nation to which He
would bequeath a special honor and spectacular destiny.
When God brought about the independence of the United States in 1776, He
was supervising the founding of a nation He purposed to have in place about
two centuries later as the world's mightiest superpower.
And His reason for elevating America to this position was so that she would
ally herself with the surviving remnant of the Jewish people, help them
take root again in their national homeland, and support them in their
struggle against a hostile world.
So America exists for Israel's sake? What an absurd thought!
By such reckoning, all the major events that shaped the United States -
from the days of early settlement, through the colonial era, the War of
Independence and Declaration of Independence, the launching of the
Information Age, the American Industrial Revolution, the American Civil
War, the Abolition of Slavery, the attainment to flight, World War One, the
Great Depression, World War Two, the advent of the Atomic Age, the Space
Race, the Cold War and America's victory over it - all these things took
place ultimately so that the United States could be positioned to stand
with the Jewish nation in the 20th and 21st centuries.
Surely a ridiculous idea!
Israel is one of the smallest nations on earth, just 26,990 square miles or
43,436 square kilometers in total surface area. It is home to 6.8 million
Israelis, nearly 80 percent of them Jewish. The daily lives of its people
revolve around the basic issues of survival against military onslaught,
preserving Israel as a Jewish state and yet a democracy, absorbing hundreds
of thousands of new immigrants, building a prosperous economy for its
citizens, and battling for acceptance in a world that has never had much
time for Jews. Events happening almost everywhere on the globe impact
Israel in one way or the other.
By contrast, the United States could swallow this scrap of Jewish homeland
130 times. The 3.5 million square miles (5.6million sq. km) of that mammoth
country are home to 300 million people, 98 percent of them Gentiles. It is
the wealthiest, most powerful military and industrial nation in the world.
Americans are proud - immensely proud - of their country. For the majority
of its citizens, America is the center of the world. For some it is the
world. There is so much going on somewhere in the US at any given moment of
every day that events outside its borders often don't penetrate the daily
news bulletins and consequently simply do not happen as far as most
Americans are concerned.
The United States lies half-a-world away from the State of Israel.
Politically, it is largely consumed with issues affecting its relations
with the other great nations on the globe - the European Union, China,
Russia. It holds veto power in, and is a permanent member of, the United
Nations Security Council. It hosts and attends as the most important member
world summits like the G-7, and sponsors global energy and numerous other
initiatives while maintaining an intensely high level of diplomatic
activity with a finger in almost every political pie on the planet.
And this giant's purpose, its primary raison d'etre, is to be allied with
Israel against the rest of the international community?
How could any serious-minded person accept such a notion? Well, David
Huffman and his pastor friend believe this to be true. So, for that matter,
do I.
As a non-American, however, perhaps it is easier for me to see things this
way.
For most American Christians, raised to be deeply patriotic and fiercely
loyal to their country, and enjoying the sense of near-invulnerability
offered by such a powerful motherland, reaching a conclusion like this
would require a revolutionary paradigm shift.
To fathom this and ultimately embrace it means to recognize that little
Israel and no other nation - no matter how large and mighty - is at the
center of God's plan for mankind.
But God had not abandoned Jacob "whom He foreknew." Although humanity had
now entered the Christian epoch Israel - the desolate land and the
scattered people - outlived or survived in spite of every major kingdom and
empire that existed from the time of Christ until today, including Rome,
the Byzantium and Islamic states, the Crusaders, the British Empire, Nazi
Germany, and the USSR.
Unlike all other Gentile nations in history, America had the distinction of
being built on biblical bedrock. Dig down to her foundations, and you'll
find the Scriptures there.
In 1620 it was devotion to the Bible, "to the letter and the spirit, to the
Old Testament as well as the New" that drove the Separatist Puritans to
board the Mayflower and hazard the journey to New England where they
established one of the first settlements in the New World.
Stated the first president of the United States and a self-confessed
believer in Jesus, George Washington: "It is impossible to govern the world
without God and the Bible."
His successor, John Adams, expressed it this way: "Our constitution was
made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the
government of any other."
As the years passed, belief in the vital importance to the United States of
these Christian biblical roots was entrenched. After he came to office in
1923, President Calvin Coolidge wrote: "The foundations of our society and
our government rest so much on the teachings of the Bible that it would be
difficult to support them if faith in these teachings would cease to be
practically universal in our country."
It is this belief which holds the key to America's victorious survival
against the forces that want to see her go the way of all the powers before
her. The Bible contains all the answers, and all the plans, that God has
for individuals and for nations. And the nation central to its subject and
present on all its pages is Israel.
I believe God has always had a special destiny laid out for America. And,
tall order though it may be at this late hour in our era, I believe that
America can yet rediscover and pursue that destiny.
It will require that God's people in that land exchange their perspective -
which has their great country at the center of the world - for God's
perspective, which has little Israel in that place, at the hub of His still
unfolding redemption plan.
America's God-ordained, glorious role and privilege, if she can find the
humility to live it out, is to serve Israel by standing with her against
the rest of the world, and enabling her to fulfill her mission.
In truth, the United States has already made much headway towards this.
Since assuming her place at the head of the nations, she has sacrificed
enormously to ensure the defeat of Nazism and the thwarting of Soviet
Communism. She is now embroiled in bitter battle to prevent the
Islamicization of the world in a war that has her pitted against Israel's
latest, most mortal foe. By sending American men and women deep into
Afghanistan and Iraq to deal powerful blows to Islam's frontline forces,
the United States is not only confronting and working towards neutralizing
the likes of those who carried out 9-11. America is de facto defending
Israel at the same time.
According to all I have written here, this is what America was really
founded for. She is on the way towards the realization of her calling. Will
she then, as she is poised to do at the very height of this battle, sell
Israel out to the very enemy that aims to consume both the United States
and the bruised and bloodied little Jewish nation?

Israel will continue with the "extremely effective" policy of targeted
terrorist killings, IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant Dan Halutz said Tuesday at
a meeting of the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee meeting.
"The policy has proven its own success," he said, adding that currently the
IDF was focusing on Islamic Jihad. "They [Islamic Jihad] are the ones that
are doing the firing at the moment, Hamas has stopped."
In 2005, there were 37 "targeted assassinations," said Halutz, who stressed
that those operations contributed to the decrease in terror activity.
Halutz also told the committee that terrorist had smuggled as many as 10
shoulder-launched missiles into Gaza since 2004. He added, however, that
there had been a greater threat to civilian air traffic outside of Israel
than within.
"We have certain technology against these things here in Israel," said
Halutz, although he declined to specify.
While there had been a noticeable decrease in the scope of violence,
terrorists in the West Bank had intensified their efforts to launch attacks,
the sources said. "One should not be deceived by the so-called calm.
Underneath, the ground is boiling," a security official said.

(I-Newswire) - Archaeologist William Donato and a team of researchers have confirmed a complex of ancient harbor works in shallow water off Bimini, 50 miles from Miami. In May 2005, the team investigated a little-known line of underwater stones located a mile from a controversial site known as the "Bimini Road." The new mile-long line of stones was found and videotaped from the air. Subsequent dives revealed several large stone circles on the bottom, formed from large blocks of limestone arranged into circular patterns. The circles were spaced at regular intervals. Stone anchors, identical to ancient Phoenician, Greek, and Roman anchors, were also found. "These finds took us by surprise," stated Dr. Greg Little, who organized the expedition. "The circles may be similar to ancient Mediterranean harbor 'mooring circles.'"
Near the new site is the Bimini Road, a misnamed J-shaped underwater formation of stone blocks. A careful search there yielded two stone anchors in the 1800-foot long stone formation. "One of these is identical to unusual ancient Greek anchors found at Thera," Little related. Several other artifacts were found, "but the most important finds directly contradict skeptical claims." The team found numerous multiple tiers of blocks including one set of three on top of each other. "The top block has a U-shaped channel cut all the way across its bottom," Little said. "The most definitive evidence was found under the massive blocks. We found rectangular slabs of smooth, cut stone literally stacked under several blocks. These were used as leveling prop stones. This is proof that the so-called Bimini Road was a breakwater forming an ancient harbor."
The team took 20 hours of underwater video and 1000 photos. "It's taken us five months to process the information and organize the evidence," Little stated. "While the finds are definitive, the real problem is that a few skeptics wrote articles asserting the main formation was simply natural limestone. A hoax was perpetrated at Bimini by the skeptics, but you have to examine a 1978 report to understand it. Academic archaeologists and geologists don't read that report. They cite later summaries, which are based on falsified data. The hoax is a disgrace, but it's been actively supported by key people."

Toward Tradition.
We Jews aren’t chic any longer. Not too many people care for Jews these days. Europe, including England, makes little secret of how it feels towards Jews. If possible, they care even less for Israel. All Moslem countries, more than a billion angry people frequently at one another’s necks, are magically unified over hatred for Jews and resentment over that little patch of sand in the Middle East which Jews turned into a country. Much of Africa and most of Russia feels the same way. Hate the Jews.
It is very challenging for a small group of people to survive with no friends.
But wait! There is one group of people who unconditionally love Jews and the Land of Israel. These people are called Christian conservatives. They are made up of Catholics, and Protestants, Baptists and Lutherans and many others. Although theologies differ widely, they all share a deep conviction that God gave the Ten Commandments to Moses on Mount Sinai. They all fervently believe that in so doing, God presented humanity with a blueprint for life. Needless to say, these views should be shared by every Jew committed to his faith.
We leave God to peer into other’s motivations and we are called to judge other people by how they act. And the overwhelming majority of Christian conservatives in America act with astounding goodness, generosity, and friendship.
A common understanding of the Bible, its promises and its directions, lies at the foundation of the special friendship the Christian Right has for Jews. Most Jews are profoundly grateful to have such faithful friends during a period when events are echoing frightening times of the past.
It is a remarkable thing, this friendship. Very different theologies, very different histories and backgrounds, and even different visions of the future, yet a shared recollection of our Biblical past assures the present in an atmosphere of trust and amity.
This may be a good time for me to expose the five slanderous lies surrounding America’s most misunderstood movement:
1) The Christian Right wishes to impose a theocracy on America.
Who really does have a record of forcing their values down the throats of everyone else? Over the past forty years life in America has been made indescribably more squalid, expensive, and dangerous.
Forget city parks at night; we worry about children surviving a day at the local public school with its metal detectors and ludicrously unarmed guards. So who has more successfully forced its values down our throats? I think the record speaks for itself.
2) The Christian right believes all who disagree with them are going to hell.
Even if some believe this, so what?
For me personally, it bothers me not at all that many of my Christian friends believe I am headed to hell. Frankly I am deeply grateful to be living among such wonderful Christian neighbors who do absolutely nothing to accelerate my arrival there. Does the phrase “Spanish Inquisition” mean anything to you?
Israel’s safety belt is undoubtedly America’s Bible belt and I am sure that America has provided history’s safest and longest lasting haven for Jews, not in spite of, but precisely because of her deep Christian conviction.
Christian belief, no matter how difficult for non-Christians to accept, poses no threat to anyone. On the contrary, it has turned out to be the source of blessing for all who cherish the freedom and tranquility of the United States of America. The same George Washington who wrote “May the children of the stock of Abraham who dwell in this land continue to merit and enjoy the goodwill of the other inhabitants” was a George Washington who was a deeply religious and very conservative Christian.
3) Christian conservatives are anti-Semitic and racist.
I can only tell you that I regularly deliver speeches to audiences, often of thousands, for the very organizations listed by the ADL in its latest anti-Christian diatribe. I do so as an Orthodox Jewish rabbi and on the dais I wear the same black yarmulke I wore during my Torah studies in yeshiva. I talk of the same Biblical values I was taught in that yeshiva. After the speech I frequently enjoy a dinner brought by the organizers with considerable trouble and expense from a kosher restaurant, often from another city. I am received with enthusiasm and genuine warmth. If this be anti-Semitism, my grandfather in Europe would surely have welcomed it.
Oh, did I mention that many of the pastors making up the Christian Right are themselves black Americans?
I estimate that at least ten percent of most every audience I address is African American. The charge that the Christian Right is racist is made exclusively by people whose antagonism is exceeded only by their ignorance.
4) Christian conservatives are poor, uneducated, and easy to command.
This allegation was first made by Washington Post journalist Michael Weisskopf in a front page story on February 1st, 1993. In reality, average annual income for Christian conservatives is well above the national average. Furthermore, the average net worth of conservative Christian families rockets ahead of the national average especially when corrected for age and income. This shouldn’t surprise anyone because the values of thrift and industry that build net worth are among the values encouraged by Biblical faith. Finally, the bountiful generosity in the form of charitable donations made by America’s religious conservatives in any year exceeds the gross domestic product of many nation members of the United Nations.
Most of the nation’s hundreds of Christian colleges, with their rigorous academic standards, routinely outperform state universities. Christian home schoolers win the national spelling bees year after year. In a 2003 article entitled God on the Quad, the Boston Globe described how well Christian Evangelical students are doing on New England’s liberal elite university campuses.
As for easy to command, well Evangelical judicial nominee Harriet Miers was forced to withdraw her nomination precisely because America’s religious conservatives are not easy to command.
5) The Christian right is anti-Scientific.
This charge emerges from secular America’s docile homage to the doctrines of Darwin. Wise and educated people today realize that the borderline between cutting-edge science and religious belief is fuzzy. One need only examine the work of cosmologist Stephen Hawking, British scientific philosopher Antony Flew, or Israeli physicist Gerald Schroeder to hear the language of theology. Only propagandists and ideologues think that Darwin ended the discussion.
The truth is that two incompatible beliefs can account for mankind’s presence on the planet. The first is that God created us in His image and placed us here. The second is that through a lengthy process of unaided materialistic evolution, primitive protoplasm became Bach, Beethoven, and the Beatles.
Many scientists, including the 40% who are religious according to a University of Georgia study cited by the New York Times in February of this year, accept the first view. Many scientists accept the second view and some scientists await further evidence. The issue is hardly cut and dried because a great deal of modern science flows as much from scientific philosophy as it does from laboratory experiment. This is particularly true of non-replicable science such as that dealing with cosmology and origin of the universe questions.
It would be tough to find a single Christian high school, college, or university in the nation that does not treat Darwinian evolution seriously. However, it would be even tougher to find a single public high school or secular university that grants a respectful hearing to intelligent design, let alone a religious view of creation.
It is also only on secular campuses that truth is frequently suppressed in the interests of political correctness.
I Does Jewish survival lie with a fervent secularism that ceaselessly snaps at the heels of Christian America or does it lie within political alliance with those people who stand firm for the values God imparted to the Jews at the foot of Mount Sinai just over three thousand years ago. One way is right and the other is wrong. Which is it?

JERUSALEM - Archaeologists digging at the purported biblical home of Goliath have unearthed a shard of pottery bearing an inscription of the Philistine’s name, a find they claimed lends historical credence to the Bible’s tale of David’s battle with the giant.
While the discovery is not definitive evidence of Goliath’s existence, it does support the Bible’s depiction of life at the time the battle was supposed to have occurred, said Dr. Aren Maeir, a professor at Bar-Ilan University and director of the excavation.
“What this means is that at the time there were people there named Goliath,†he said. “It shows us that David and Goliath’s story reflects the cultural reality of the time.†In the story, David slew Goliath with a slingshot.
Some scholars assert the story of David slaying the giant Goliath is a myth written down hundreds of years later. Maeir said finding the scraps lends historical credence to the biblical story.
The shard dates back to around 950 B.C., within 70 years of when biblical chronology asserts David squared off against Goliath, making it the oldest Philistine inscription ever found, the archaeologists said.
Scientists made the discovery at Tel es-Safi, a dig site in southern Israel thought to be to be the location of the Philistine city of Gath.

A Is for Ancient, Describing an Alphabet Found Near Jerusalem

In the 10th century B.C., in the hill country south of Jerusalem, a scribe carved his A B C's on a limestone boulder - actually, his aleph-beth-gimel's, for the string of letters appears to be an early rendering of the emergent Hebrew alphabet.
Letters on a stone found near Tel Zayit resemble Phoenician.
Archaeologists digging in July at the site, Tel Zayit, found the inscribed stone in the wall of an ancient building. After an analysis of the layers of ruins, the discoverers concluded that this was the earliest known specimen of the Hebrew alphabet and an important benchmark in the history of writing, they said this week.
If they are right, the stone bears the oldest reliably dated example of an abecedary - the letters of the alphabet written out in their traditional sequence. Several scholars who have examined the inscription tend to support that view.
The discovery of the stone will be reported in detail next week in Philadelphia, but was described in interviews with Ron E. Tappy, the archaeologist at the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary who directed the dig.
"All successive alphabets in the ancient world, including the Greek one, derive from this ancestor at Tel Zayit," he said.

Stager, an archaeologist at Harvard engaged in other excavations in Israel, said the pottery styles at the site "fit perfectly with the 10th century, which makes this an exceedingly rare inscription." But he added that more extensive radiocarbon dating would be needed to establish the site's chronology.
The Tel Zayit stone was uncovered at an eight-acre site in the region of ancient Judah, south of Jerusalem, and 18 miles inland from Ashkelon, an ancient Philistine port.
The two lines of incised letters, apparently the 22 symbols of the Hebrew alphabet, were on one face of the 40-pound stone. A bowl-shaped hollow was carved in the other side, suggesting that the stone had been a drinking vessel for cult rituals, Dr. Tappy said.
The inscription was found in the context of a substantial network of buildings at the site, which led Dr. Tappy to propose that Tel Zayit was probably an important border town established by an expanding Israelite kingdom based in Jerusalem.
A border town of such size and culture, Dr. Tappy said, suggested a centralized bureaucracy, political leadership and literacy levels that seemed to support the biblical image of the unified kingdom of David and Solomon in the 10th century B.C.

The inscription attributed to King Jehoash whose discovery was announced earlier this week was reportedly found near Jerusalem's Muslim cemetery, outside the eastern wall of the Temple Mount, not far from Golden Gate, according to information obtained by Ha'aretz.
Jehoash ruled in Jerusalem at the end of the ninth century B.C.E. The inscription has been authenticated by the National Infrastructure Ministry's Geological Survey of Israel.

This is discussed by Hoyle in his book Nicolaus Copernicus...Hoyle points out that the Earth does not, technically, revolve around the Sun, but rather, the Earth and Sun both revolve around the center of mass of the Earth-Sun system, which is quite a few miles from the Sun's central axis (though still well inside the Sun). Hoyle points out that one must factor in all objects, starting with the nearest stars, to recalculate the true center-of-mass of the earth-sun-universe. Hoyle speculates that once one has properly applied the barycentric argument to all other entities in the universe (known as "widening the view angle of one's telescope to avoid self- serving tunnel vision"), the center-of-mass may easily be at the Earth's location, making it impossible to disprove the geocentric hypothesis.
Hoyle says the barycentric argument is only properly applied when every object in the universe has been factored into the center-of-mass calculation, a calculation that has never been done. He believes that consistent application of the barycentric argument, layer by layer, places the center- of-mass farther away from the Sun and closer to the Earth and concludes that the barycentric argument can easily and fully support pure geocentricity: "The Earth is suspended at the center of the universe" (Hilchos Yesodei HaTorah 3).

MARGARET Thatcher forced Francois Mitterrand to give her the codes to disable Argentina's French-made missiles during the Falklands war by threatening to launch a nuclear warhead against Buenos Aires, according to a book.
Rendez-vous: the psychoanalysis of Francois Mitterrand , by Ali Magoudi, who met the late French president up to twice a week in secrecy at his Paris practice from 1982 to 1984, also reveals that Mr Mitterrand believed he would get his "revenge" by building a tunnel under the Channel that would forever destroy Britain's island status. The book, to be published on Friday, is one of several on France's first Socialist president to mark the 10th anniversary of his death on January 8, 1996.
Despite a now tarnished reputation, he remains a source of fascination for the French in general and the left in particular. Rendez-vous provides revealing insights into the man's mysterious character, complicated past, paranoia and power complex, but nothing as titillating as his remarks on the former British prime minister. [] IDF paratrooper David Markowitz, a student of the Hesder yeshiva in Mitzpeh Ramon, became a national hero for a day on Tuesday when he killed four Hizbullah terrorists with one gun burst.

Markowitz, who will be 21 next week, has been in the army for only eight months. On Monday night, during the furious Hizbullah attack against northern Israeli targets, he and the soldiers in his unit prevented a planned abduction of an Israeli soldier.
He was the first to notice a band of Hizbullah terrorists that had crossed Israel's Lebanese border on jeeps and motorbikes - and shot them to death.
In a similar attack five years ago, Hizbullah terrorists abducted three soldiers - and never notified Israel that they killed them almost immediately afterwards.
This week's incident accompanied a multi-pronged Hizbullah rocket and mortar shell attack against Israeli military and civilian targets. When he saw the terrorists arriving, Markowitz later said, "I was scared" - but he kept his cool and composure, opened fire, and shot three terrorists dead. A fourth one died of his wounds a short time afterwards.
Markowitz's commander, Lt.-Col. Yaniv Aluf, described his actions as an "amazing display of courage, discipline and composure."
In summarizing the incident, the Northern Commander said that had Markowitz not noticed the approaching danger, the incident would have ended with many casualties and "in an extremely grave manner." "With his first shots, he determined the fate of the battle," Northern Command sources said. The army is considering awarding him a certificate of honor.
A resident of the small town of Gimzo in central Israel, Markowitz serves in the army in the framework of Hesder, which literally means "arrangement." It provides for five years of alternating periods of yeshiva study and combat army service.
The Hesder yeshivot, which are widely known for their highly-motivated and skilled soldiers, have come under fire of late from army officials for their stance vis-a-vis the Disengagement plan. IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Dan Halutz has even gone so far as to demand that the yeshiva in Elon Moreh no longer be granted Hesder status because its Dean, Rabbi Yaakov Levanon, called upon students to refuse expulsion-related orders.
The final decision as to whether to close the yeshiva lies with Defense Minister Sha'ul Mofaz.
Rabbi Levanon himself said that this was not a personal issue and that he would not fight this battle: "I will leave this war for my colleagues, the other yeshiva heads... The question is when a Torah personality expresses a Torah opinion, is it right to punish him? Is it right to train people to deny their personal truth in order to 'get along better in life'? Every yeshiva head could find himself facing a question like this..."
The Hesder yeshiva heads are to meet today (Wednesday) to formulate a stance on this issue. Spokesman Rabbi David Stav said that the Union of Hesder Yeshivot "does not accept this decision by the Chief of Staff, and is trying to have the decree rescinded."
The Commander of the IDF Personnel Corps, Maj.-Gen. Elazar Stern, announced plans a few months ago to disband, to some degree, the Hesder yeshiva units. Relations between the yeshivot and the army are thus not at their zenith.
In the meanwhile, the fact that David Markowitz is a Hesder yeshiva student was all but buried in the press reports - despite the prominent role that Hesder yeshivot have played in recent news.
Army Radio interviewer Razi Barkai asked Defense Minister Sha'ul Mofaz this morning whether he does not feel "discomfited" by the fact that "a soldier" was so highly praised for simply "doing his job." Mofaz said he does not feel that way, that the soldier deserves to be praised, and that the army publicizes the details of failures as well as successes.

Yesterday Hebron celebrated the purchase of Ma'arat HaMachpela, bought
almost 4,000 years ago by the Patriarch Abraham, to bury his wife, Sarah.
Annually, as this Torah portion is read, thousands of people arrive in
Hebron for Shabbat to hear these verses recited at the very site Abraham
purchased.
This Shabbat, over 25,000 people from Israel and around the world, arrived
in Hebron to participate in this special event. Hundreds traveled from the
United States especially for this Shabbat, via Hebron's New York office, the
Hebron Fund, and through AFSI. In addition, thousands of Israeli couples
and youth were hosted by Hebron and Kiryat Arba families.
Youth slept in public buildings, prepared especially for Shabbat. Due to the
warm weather, many also pitched tents in Hebron and Kiryat Arba. Shabbat
meals were provided for those who made prior reservations.
Families in Hebron and Kiryat Arba hosted dozens of people in their homes,
with guests sleeping on any available floor space.
Friday night, the multitudes gathered at Ma'arat HaMachpela, the Tomb of the
Patriarchs and Matriarchs, for evening worship. The entire building was open
to Jewish worshipers, including Ohel Yitzhak, the Isaac Hall, open to Jews
only 11 days during the year. Huge prayer services were held both inside and
outside, in the Ma'ara courtyard. Thousands joyously sang and danced the
traditional Kabbalat Shabbat service.
Following the evening meal, many of the guests attended classes and lectures
in Hebron and Kiryat Arba. People could be seen roaming the streets of
Hebron through the early hours of the morning.
At five thirty in the morning, thousands gathered for early morning prayers
at Ma'arat HaMachpela. A 'central service' began at eight o'clock in Ohel
Yitzhak, with thousands crowding in and participating. Hearing the ancient
words chanted, written by a scribe on parchment, describing the lengthy
negotiations leading to Abraham's purchase of the caves and field, almost
four millennium ago, at that very site, left everyone in awe.
Following the services and afternoon meal, throngs toured Hebron's Jewish
neighborhoods, with tours given in Hebrew, English, French and Russian. A
festive 'third meal' was attended by hundreds of guests from the United
States in the Gutnick Center.
Hebron leaders, extremely happy with the huge turnout, said that this was
the largest "Chaye Sarah" Shabbat gathering ever. They expressed hope that
Israeli politicians and world leaders would take note of the tremendous
international support for Hebron's Jewish community. They also commented
that such a strong show of support should assist in efforts to prevent the
possible expulsion of Jewish families from the 'Mitzpe Shalhevet
neighborhood, which was ordered to be implemented before the end of 2005.

Not quite the Third Temple, but close: Entrepreneurs in the northern city of Kiryat Shemoneh are making plans to build a "Holy Temple" as part of a soon-to-be established Bible World amusement park.
Like the original in Jerusalem, the model structure will tower over its surroundings, reaching a height of 25 meters (82 feet) and will be an exact replica of Solomon's temple on Jerusalem's Temple Mount, destroyed by the Babylonians in 586 BCE.
"Time tunnels" will offer descriptions of the different periods of Jewish history, and will lead visitors to the main hall, which will feature murals depicting Biblical stories.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to "meet" three heroes of the Bible: Abraham, Moses and King David.
Overseeing the project is Chabad rabbi of Kiryat Shemoneh, Yigal Tsipori, who toured the site Wednesday with Mayor Chaim Barbibai and other local rabbis.
"The 'Book of Books,' the cradle of Jewish civilization, is increasingly disappearing from our national consciousness. Limited study is no longer sufficient to attract young people of today to the Bible and its values. Therefore, there is a great need for this initiative," said Tsipori.
"The 'Temple' will use 3-D movies and other tools to show young people just how things worked in the Holy Temple and just what the priests (Cohanim) did," he added.
The park will also feature a Biblical textile mill and wine press, and will host Bar and Bat Mitzvah receptions.
The park's founders say they hope to attract 400,000 visitors annually to the park, including local Israeli youths and young people from the Diaspora.
The project, to be located near the Nehemia Mall in Kiryat Shemoneh, is expected to cost USD 8 million (NIS 38 million) and employ several dozen workers.
Several donors have already been lined up to fund the project.

I know it is easy for me to comment on what I would do as I live here in the heartland of America, but when I read about building a replica of Solomon's Temple in another site not on the Temple Mount, it really causes me to wonder what is going on in the minds of the Israeli people when they allow a bunch of pagan worshipers have a Mosque on the mount and Israelis not be allowed the same privilege. It reminds me of Israel at the time that Goliath challenged the army of Israel and only one man had the insight to understand who he represented, and went out in the name of G-d and slew the infidel, so why does the people and government of Israel let this pagan horde dictate to them what they can do on the temple mount, it is a direct parallel of the Goliath and David scene. THE TRUTH COMES TOO LATE
There is not and has never been a validated Oslo Accord between the PLO/PA and the State of Israel. What, you may exclaim? Why then does the media constantly engage in discussing this agreement as if it were live and well and agreed upon by two sides? Has it been forgotten that the Palestinian ruling body never signed this accord? Why does Israel along with many nations of the world proceed as if it were valid and considered so by two sides? The fact is that despite the status of the agreement, Israel continued along giving the PA billions of dollars, weapons, land concessions and political autonomy? This is a bitter realization; that so many sacrifices were made for an agreement existing in theory only. The media continued to push under the carpet the fact that the old covenant calling for the destructing of Israel was alive and well in the PLO/PA committees, while Oslo remained unsigned. Everybody seemed to recognize the Oslo Accords - with the important exclusion of one of the two parties bound by the agreement. Now, there is anger that this fact remained clouded over, and only after the granting of autonomy, with the following terrible bloodshed, serious injuries and loss of life, destruction, and damage to Israel's socioeconomic structures, this fact become painfully clear. Why now are we just being told that there never was a valid accord? For what did we stake so many lives?
THE MECHANICS OF AN INVALID AGREEMENT
The truth is, as stated above; there is not and never was a valid Oslo Agreement. After himself signing the accords, Arafat summoned the PLO's executive committee to session but was not able or did not wish to succeed in achieving a quorum. Therefore no vote could be held at this time. Arafat may have called for further meetings but out of opposition to Oslo, various factions always succeeded in boycotting critical meetings. Not then, and not ever was a favorable vote achieved in this committee. In addition, after three sessions of the Fatah Central Committee, it was decided that no vote would be held. Arafat never even attempted to convene the PLO National Council, where he might try again and petition for approval of the accords. (The above is equivalent to the parliamentary rejection of a Prime Ministers proposal or a presidents failure to win approval either in the House, the Senate or his own Cabinet.) Therefore, all that was received by America, Israel, and the rest of the world was a piece of paper signed by one master criminal terrorist, not validated by parties of leadership and with no binding legal power over the PLO-PA. The media continued to emphasize the acceptance by one man of the accords, but Arafat's signature did not create a working Accord. It certainly did not replace the old militantly anti-Semitic Covenant which remained as the PLO/PA's official reference and legislative machine. The basis for a lethal situation had already been laid, A documented calling for compromise, mutual rights, a laying down of arms and mutual trust, was signed, seriously studied and implemented by one of the opposing sides, was phlegmatically ignored by the other, and with more then a little help form the media was cheered and applauded by the rest of the world.
In addition to the above, there are many experts who believe that Arafat himself was against the accords, and that he himself instructed and engineered the blockage of the accords.
SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE
Despite the media's insistence that the PA\PLO had changed some of the statutes of the covenant, (and specifically the statutes calling for Israel's destruction) this simply was not so. The PLO continued to act according to it's old covenant. They simply used the old Palestinian covenant as a basis to legislate new laws when needed.
The Oslo accords were never legal, were never ratified, and were never made binding to any of the PLO organizations. Hence, the continued terror, support of terror, and sedition of the PA/PLO never violated any agreements, because they had never accepted them upon themselves Arafat's scribblings. As one PLO member once said, the White House and the Israelis can scribble on toilet paper all they want. And if Arafat signs at the end of the roll, it still has nothing to do with us.
Just imagine the volume of the noise, the hysteria, panic and screaming the media would make in the case of any government that tried to push down peoples throats, without referendum etc, a right-wing religious agenda based on a nonratified agreement with a foreign suspect entity. That’s right. The outcry would reach the high heavens, would be nonstop 24/7, and would result in legal sanctions against such moves. In our case, a left-wing agenda made with an arch-criminal terrorist and never ratified by the groups he supposedly represented, met with absolute silence. The media demonstrated moral bankruptcy and negligence that could be considered criminal. In other words, reviving the real old-fashioned soviet style of reporting.

Ecbatana was the captial of the Medes, then of the Scythians, and again of
the Medes. The Talmud identifies it with Hamadan and says it was one of the cities of the Medes to which Israelites
were exiled (2-Kings 17). Rawlinson believed there had been two important cities of that name.

2. Terrorist Attack in Netanyah
Brit-Am was still in the process of sending out
"Brit-Am Now"-626 (item #4. Daily Miracles) in which
we spoke of how successful and dedicated the Police Army and Security forces had been and how God was protecting us partly through their agency when the report of a terrorist attack in Netanyah came through.
On the one hand this was like a slap in the face since at the very moment we had began giving ourselves a pat on the back as to how Divine Providence was protecting the citizens of Israel an exception occurred. We hope and pray it will remain an exception.
On the other hand the message did partly justify what we had written since the guards and police present had risked their lives, some were amongst the casualties, and if it was not for them far greater harm may have come about.

Second time in five months: A Palestinian suicide terrorist murders five people at the HaSharon Mall in Netanya.
The blast occurred at approximately 11:30 AM. Some 55 people are reported wounded in light and moderate condition.
Two cars were reportedly seen speeding away from the site of the attack.
As has occurred many times in the past, the terrorist was unsuccessful in entering the mall, and was forced to detonate himself outside the building. A policewoman who was lightly wounded reported that a passerby alerted her to a suspicious figure, who began to run when she gave chase in her police car. "He was blonde, tall and holding a large bag. One of the [mall's] guards grabbed him by the shoulder, but I yelled, 'Forget the shoulder, get his hand!' because I saw that he had his hand in the bag. But then he blew himself up..." She said it was the seventh time she had been present at the scene of a terrorist attack.
Other witnesses that the guard pushed the terrorist away from the entrance to the mall. Police Chief Moshe Karadi said the explosion occurred about ten meters from the mall entrance.

wishes to call it) wins the temporary approval of the wide world, as

After the Oslo accords were signed in September 1993, the General Assembly
voted 155 to 3, with 1 abstention and 19 states not voting, to express "its
full support for the achievements of the peace process thus far." After the
Barak government retreated from Lebanon in May 2000, U.N. Secretary-General
Kofi Annan praised Israel for this "important development in the Israeli-UN
relationship."
There is a long history of Israeli prime ministers being rewarded for giving
things away. .
The world will say it is a good step forward, and in a month or two or three
the world will say, "What is next?" This only buys a little time of feting.

2, the General Assembly voted on six resolutions concerning Israel and its
neighbors, and in each of the six it reverted to form, lambasting, bashing,
and accusing Israel at every turn. For example, by a vote of 156 in favor to
6 against (those being Australia, Israel, Marshall Islands, Federated States
of Micronesia, Palau, United States), with 9 abstentions (Cameroon, Canada,
Costa Rica, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Tuvalu, Uganda, Vanuatu), the
General Assembly passed a resolution calling on Israeli withdrawal from the
territories it won in 1967. By 153 to 7, it condemned Israeli jurisdiction
and administration in Jerusalem. And so forth, through the various issues.
Winston Churchill warned that "An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile,
hoping it will eat him last." The U.N. crocodile has shown it is satiated
but briefly by Israel, returning after each "painful concession" with an
even more voracious appetite. Will Israelis ever again understand that wars
are won through victory, not retreat?
