1. Palestinian summer camps teach kids to hate and kill

Across the Gaza Strip, Palestinian children signed in to summer camps this month not to swim, play and learn about nature, but rather to be indoctrinated with hatred for the Jewish people and to be instructed in the methods of terrorist warfare.

Ynet reported that between Hamas and Islamic Jihad, the groups are hosting around 50,000 Palestinian children at some 400 camps throughout the small coastal territory.

Children participating in the camps are required to memorize passages from Koran, and are then taken outside to train with assault rifles, rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) and Kassam rocket launchers.

Sky News correspondent Emma Hurd reported that at another camp run by the Popular Resistance Committee, she witnessed a training session during which an adult instructor dressed as a Jew, complete with skull cap, was ambushed and dragged from his vehicle to be executed by a group of children dressed in military fatigues.

While the camps have been at least lightly covered by the international press, nearly all reports have failed to contrast them to Israeli summer camps, or to point out that the Palestinians are categorically failing to meet their peace obligation to foster an atmosphere conducive to peace.

The son of the leading Hamas figure in Judea and Samaria (the so-called "West Bank") said in an interview with Ha'aretz that he has converted to Christianity and repented of his sins for being an active part of a culture of hate and death that targeted God's Chosen.

Massab Yousef, son of Sheikh Hassan Yousef, spoke to the Israeli newspaper from a cafe in California. He knows that he can never return to visit his family in Ramallah without facing certain death.

Saying that he now prefers to be called "Joseph," the young man urged his Jewish interviewer and the entire nation of Israel to beware of phony peace gestures by Hamas or any other Arab authorities that are ultimately guided by Islam.

"You Jews should be aware: You will never, but never have peace with Hamas. Islam, as the ideology that guides them, will not allow them to achieve a peace agreement with the Jews," he said. "They believe that tradition says that the Prophet Mohammed fought against the Jews and that therefore they must continue to fight them to the death."

Massab said it is adherence to Islam that has turned Palestinian and wider Middle East Arab society into one that "sanctifies death and the suicide terrorists."

Massab's family later denied the report that he had become a Christian, and suggested that they are considering legal action against Ha'aretz.

MEXICO CITY ? The United States has significantly underreported the number of new H.I.V. infections occurring nationally each year, with a study released here on Saturday showing that the annual infection rate is 40 percent higher than previously estimated.

The study, conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, found that 56,300 people became newly infected with H.I.V in 2006, compared with the 40,000 figure the agency has cited as the recent annual incidence of the disease.

The findings confirm that H.I.V., the virus that causes AIDS, has its greatest effect among gay and bisexual men of all races (53 percent of all new infections) and among African-American men and women.

The new figures are likely to strongly influence a number of decisions about efforts to control the epidemic, said the disease centers? director, Dr. Julie L. Gerberding, and other AIDS experts. Timely data about trends in H.I.V. transmission, they said, is essential for planning and evaluating prevention efforts and the money spent on them.

Dr. Gerberding said the new findings were "unacceptable," adding that new efforts must be made to lower the infection rates. "We are not effectively reaching men who have sex with men and African-Americans to lower their risk," she said.
