23:28 French President Nicolas Sarkozy said that French soldiers engaged in
Afghanistan are fighting against ''terrorism, barbary and obscure beliefs. We do
not have the right to lose there,'' he added during a tribute for the ten French
NATO soldiers killed in an ambush near Kabul on Monday. (Guysen.International.News)
In a recent poll, some 55% of French people favor a pullout of French troops
from Afghanistan.
19:55 The Dutch navy has seized a record 4.2 tons of cocaine on a cargo ship in
the Caribbean. The estimated value of the load is $310 million. (Guysen.International.News)
19:15 Likud deputy Silvan Shalom siad that Israel should call on Russia not to
arm the enemies of the Jewish state, at a time when Moscow and Damascus appear
to be stepping up their military cooperation. (Guysen.International.News)
"The arming of Syria would bring strategic changes to the Middle East and upset
its stability," he said.
18:25 The undersecretary of the Russian embassy in Israel, Anatoly Yurkov, said
that Russia has no need to deploy missiles in Syria. ''Why should we set up
missiles there,'' he asked. ''We have no enemies in the region.'' (Guysen.International.News)
Yurkov said that relations between Russia and Israel have never been better than
now. Israeli President Shimon Peres said that Russian missiles in Syria could be
a danger for the entire world.

the contested sovereignity of strategic islands there. The secretary general of

islands was similar to ''Israel's occupation of Palestine.'' (Guysen.International.News)
13:22 Palestinian prisoners in Israel are doing a brilliant business in cell
phones, according to the Asharq Awsat newspaper. Prices for a cell phone can go
as high as $10,000 because of draconian measures by prison guards. Prisoners
receive money from organizations they are affiliated with and then rent the
phones out to 30 or 40 other prisoners. The phones are used to speak with family
members, but also to plan terrorist attacks, according to the daily. (Guysen.International.News)
10:18 Egyptian authorities found half a ton of explosives in the Sinai that
were destined for Gaza. The sacks of explosives were found near a roadblock at
Salah, not far from Rafah. (Guysen.International.News)
2. American Super-Radar in Israel under
US Control
American crew will control US FBX-band radar granted Israel
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report
From: Debka@thejmg.com
Subject: DEBKA Weekly Newsletter
19 Aug.: The powerful US FBX-T radar system to enhance its early warning
resources against incoming missiles will be installed at a US base in the
southern Israeli Negev and be off-limits to Israelis.
Senior Israel army circles have angrily questioned the judgment of Israeli
leaders and army chiefs in accepting this proviso. Unlike them, Poland, one
officer commented, took better care of its sovereignty and insisted on Polish
crews being trained to man US missile interceptors to be installed on its Baltic
coast.
In speaking last month in Washington of an important IDF acquisition for
shielding the country against enemy missiles, Barak and Ashkenazi omitted to
mention that the new radar would not be integrated in Israel?s national
interceptor system. Therefore -
(1. Israel will have no direct access to the data gathered by the X-band system
and can only hope the American operators will pass on the information as and
when Israel needs it rather than when it suits US interests.
(2. The FBX-T will not only track Iranian and Syrian missiles and aircraft but
also keep watch on Israeli operations, giving the Washington a handle for
stalling a potential Israeli preemptive Israel attack on Iran?s nuclear
installations.
