'Iran-Germany ties entering new chapter, especially in gas sector'
Tehran Times - 22 February, 2009

The Iranian ambassador to Berlin says that Iran-Germany relations have
entered a "new chapter" and there is a good chance that Iran will soon begin
gas exports to European Union countries.
Former German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, who is now the chairman of a
Russian-led gas consortium, has emphasized that the European Union has a
great need for natural gas, Ambassador Alireza Sheikh Attar told the Mehr
News Agency on Friday.
Therefore it is necessary to have another important gas-producing partner
like Iran, and this will not hurt Russian markets, he quoted Schroeder as
saying.
Sheikh Attar stated that Schroeder, who arrived in Tehran on Thursday, is
scheduled to meet Iranian Oil Minister Gholamhossein Nozari to discuss
Iranian gas exports to the European Union.
The Iranian envoy to Berlin also said that he intends "to establish a
connection between the Iranian Oil Ministry and its subsidiaries and German
oil companies."
Germany has a high demand for natural gas and is currently supplied by
Russia and North Sea gas producers, he pointed out.
However, with North Sea gas production "declining day by day" and the high
risk of Germany's dependence on Russian gas, Berlin is looking for
alternative suppliers, he added.
Thus, Iran can help Germany in this area, Sheikh Attar noted.
He also stated that Iran would be happy to see Germany play a positive role
in the reconstruction of Afghanistan, although German officials have still
not met their commitments.
For instance, Germany has not been very successful in its training of the
Afghan police and now the police forces in Afghanistan are "weaker" than
Taliban fighters, he added.

British Muslims suspected of sending Taliban roadside bombs gadgets
21 Feb.: British troops told British foreign secretary David Miliband during
visit to Helmand, Afghanistan, that British Muslims were smuggling devices which
enable Taliban fighters to detonate roadside bombs by remote control to
Afghanistan. They were either sent to sympathizers in the region or carried by
volunteers who fly to Pakistan and then make their way across the border.

Brown signs declaration against anti-Semitism

LONDON (JTA) -- Britain's prime minister became the first world leader to sign
the London Declaration on combating anti-Semitism.
The measure was adopted last week in the British capital by 125 legislators from
more than 40 countries at a coalition meeting to combat anti-Semitism.
On signing the declaration, Gordon Brown said, ?So many of the principles it
enshrines are already things we are doing here in Britain, and while I'm proud
of the bold action Britain has taken to combat anti-Semitism such as improved
reporting, prosecutions for anti-Semitic Internet hate and the funding of
Holocaust education in schools, there is no room for complacency.
He noted that the Department for Communities and Local Government is organizing
an event at Beth Shalom, the Holocaust Center, to look in detail at how the
government can implement the declaration.
"I encourage other heads of government to become signatories to this historic
agreement," Brown said. "Ttogether our renewed efforts can rid the world of this
ancient virus."
The London Declaration called on legislators to "expose, challenge and isolate
political actors who engage in hate against Jews and target the State of Israel
as a Jewish collectivity." It also calls on governments to "challenge any
foreign leader, politician or public figure who denies, denigrates or
trivializes the Holocaust and must encourage civil society to be vigilant to
this phenomenon and to openly condemn it."
The London Declaration also calls on the United Nations to "reaffirm its call
for every member state to commit itself to the principles laid out in the
Holocaust Remembrance initiative, including specific and targeted policies to
eradicate Holocaust denial and trivialization." It also calls for action on
education for the public and the authorities.
