Russian authorities deny that the ship was smuggling weapons

Webmaster's Commentary:

This reminds me of the strange case of EgyptAir flight 880, which made one unscheduled stop to pick up an unknown cargo, and was carrying several top Egyptian Military officers among the passengers. Blamed on the suicide of the pilot, the aftermath of the crash was notable for the employment of a foreign salvage company experienced in the deep water recovery of radioactive cargoes.

2. SS Commemoration Canceled in Carinthia (Austria)
By Stan Nadel
Salzburg Austria

Ever since the end of the 1950s there has been an annual war veterans commemoration at the Ulrichsberg in Carinthia where thousands of Waffen SS veterans from all over Europe and their supporters have gathered to commemorate their dead and celebrate their past.  The supporters included both old Nazis and neo-Nazis, along with the children of SS men (like Heinrich Himmler's daughter).  It had the full support and participation of the Austrian army, complete with military bands, honor guards, and significant logistical support including providing a shuttle service up the mountain for elderly veterans.  Every year it attracted the presence of numerous Austrian politicians--especially those of the Austrian Freedom Party and those from Carinthia.  It was there that Joerg Haider first made his move to take over theleadership of the Freedom Party by openly praising the veterans and their comrades, saying they had nothing to be ashamed of and that they had been defending Western Civilization against the Communists. As leader of the Freedom Party and then governor of Carinthia Haider followed in the footsteps of his predecessors as governor by gracing the meeting with his presence every year and often using it as a platform for his major speeches.

This year's commemoration was supposed to be a celebration of its 50th anniversary along with a memorial to Haider as the recently deceased governor of Carinthia.  But the proverbial dreck finally hit the fan. Social Democratic Defense Minister Norbert Darabos had already been reported to be considering withdrawing the army from all participation after reducing it's participation last year. Then came a report that Wolf Dieter Ressenig, the leading official in the sponsoring organization, had bought and sold Nazi memorabilia over the internet.  Darabos took the opportunity to finally cut all the strings linking the army and the Ulrichsberg ceremony and ordered the army to refuse any participation in any form.  Then most of the organizing committee resigned when Ressenig refused to step down.  The fall-out continued when Haider's close associate and successor as governor of Carinthia, Gerhard Doerfler, announced he wouldn't attend because the participants were "too far right" for him to be comfortable.  Doerfler's colleague, Carinthian party chief Uwe Scheuch tried to counter Doerfler's defection by announcing his continued support, but it was too late and the commemoration has been canceled. The former vice-president of the organizing committee said it wasn't practical to go ahead once the army withdrew its support and blamed Ressenig, but Ressenig took a hard line and said it was only postponed because of alleged threats to their safety from "left-wing spiritual terrorists." Defense minister Darabos welcomed the cancellation saying that it had always been associated with far right extremism.

3. Daniel Pipes: "Jewish" - Not the Same as "Pro-Israel"
August 18, 2009

jewish-not-the-same-as-pro-israel

It's an obvious point, but it needs stating:

Not all Jews are Zionist. Some believe in universal socialism, some support Palestinians, others hold that only God can create a Jewish state or have been disappointed since 1977 when the right first came to power in Israel. Some openly hate Israel, others pretend it does not exist, and the most crafty of them present themselves as Zionist.
Plenty of non-Jews are Zionist. Christian Zionism began in nineteenth-century Great Britain, included many leading American personalities, culminated with Lord Balfour and Harry S Truman, and today, as I put it in 2003, "other than the Israel Defense Forces, America's Christian Zionists may be the Jewish state's ultimate strategic asset."

Therefore, it's inaccurate to assume Jews support Israel. That assumption also has two regrettable implications: it privileges anti-Zionists among them ("I'm Jewish but "") even as it marginalizes non-Jewish Zionists.

Jews are adherents of a faith, not a political movement. When speaking of politics, talk about the pro-Israel community or Zionists, but not about Jews. (August 18, 2009)

Dennis King  re the
Larouch movement

Extracts:

Ex-members of the neo-fascist Lyndon LaRouche cult are so disgusted by its complicity in the death of Jeremiah Duggan (a Jewish youth from the U.K. who was struck and killed by a car on an autobahn in Wiesbaden, Germany, in March 2003 while fleeing in apparent terror from a LaRouche brainwashing program) that they are beginning to break their silence and come forward with fresh information about the cult's history and practices.

The LaRouchian recruitment and indoctrination regimen twists the individual's thinking inside out so that Jews become defined as Nazis, and Nazis become defined as anti-fascists (as in George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four, in which war is peace and freedom is slavery). This "newspeak" partially explains how young people--and people not so young--end up joining LaRouche and turning against their own families, religion, etc., but it should not be regarded as an excuse for what is ultimately a personal decision to embrace the dark side. A moral person can always say "no" to the intellectual seduction of someone like LaRouche (as even some Germans said "no" to Hitler--and he, unlike LaRouche, had a Gestapo with the authority of the state behind it).

6. Why won't state [of Israel] combat illegal Palestinian construction?

The High Court asked state prosecutors why the state discriminates between illegal Jewish and Palestinian building in the West Bank, citing the lack of enforcement of demolition warrants against illegally-built Palestinian buildings in the area.
The High Court hearing on Thursday came after the right-wing "Regavim movement for the protection of national land", called for the court to force Defense Minister Ehud Barak to explain why he hasn't carried out the demolition of illegal buildings in the Palestinian villages of Asaviya and Yitma in the West Bank, which are located next to the settlement of Rahalim. The state said in response to the petition that since 1996, demolition orders were given against 50 buildings in Asaviya, but only 3 have been carried out.
In the discussion, a justice asked if the enforcement of demolition orders for illegal building by Palestinians is treated equally to demolition orders for illegal building by Jewish settlers in the West Bank. A state prosecutor said that there is a difference in understanding in the Israeli and Palestinian sector.
The same prosecutor said that civilian authorities had ruled that enforcement is different for illegal construction carried out on private property owned by someone other than the builder. When a justice asked why only 3 demolition warrants had been issued since 1996, she was told that there is only so much manpower to carry out the demolitions and there are more pressing national concerns. Regavim issued a statement on Thursday saying "finally the High Court understands that it is impossible to enact selective enforcement against Jews only in the West Bank."

British National Archives unveil presence of Nazi S.S. agents in Mandatory Palestine, working closely with Palestinian leaders
Yaakov Lappin Published: 05.07.06, 16:41 / Israel News

Historical documents in Britain's National Archives in London show that Nazi Germany attempted to ship arms to Palestinian forces in the 1930s.

A British Foreign Office report from 1939 reports of "news of a consignment of arms from Germany, sent via Turkey and addressed to Ibn Saud (king of Saudi Arabia), but really intended for the Palestine insurgents." Britain's chief military officer in Mandatory Palestine also noted reports "regarding import of German arms at intervals for some years now."
British documents from the same period, and German records photographed by an American spy and sent to the British government, said that a number of Nazi agents were sent to Mandatory Palestine, in order to forge alliances with Palestinian leaders, and urge them to reject a partition of the land between the Jewish and Arab populations.
One Nazi agent, Adam Vollhardt, arrived in Palestine in July 1938, and was reported to have gained strong influence with Arab leaders, meeting with Palestinian leaders throughout 1938. Vollhardt held several meetings with leading Arab politicians and told them "that the Palestine question would be settled to the satisfaction of the Arabs within a few weeks," adding that "it would be fatal to their (Palestinians') cause if at this juncture they showed any signs of weakness or exhaustion."

"Germany was interested in the settlement of the (Palestine) question on the basis of the Arabs obtaining their full demands," Vollhardt was reported to say to Palestinian leaders, according to a report by the British War Office. Vollhardt also assured Arab leaders that "the Germans could continue to support the Palestinian Arab cause by means of propaganda."

German documents photographed and sent to Whitehall by an American spy revealed that in 1937, German officials had calculated that "Palestine under Arab rule would? become one of the few countries where we could count on a strong sympathy for the new Germany."

'Arabs admire our Fuhrer'
"The Palestinian Arabs show on all levels a great sympathy for the new Germany and its Fuhrer, a sympathy whose value is particularly high as it is based on a purely ideological foundation," a Nazi official in Palestine wrote in a letter to Berlin in 1937. He added: "Most important for the sympathies which Arabs now feel towards Germany is their admiration for our Fuhrer, especially during the unrests, I often had an opportunity to see how far these sympathies extend. When faced with a dangerous behaviour of an Arab mass, when one said that one was German, this was already generally a free pass."

A second Nazi agent, Dr. Franz Reichart, was reported to be actively working with Palestinian Arabs by the British Criminal Investigation Division "to help coordinate Arab and German propaganda." Reichart was also head of the German Telegraphic Agency in Jerusalem.

German records show that the Nazis viewed the establishment of a Jewish state with great concern. A 1937 report from German General Consulate in Palestine said: "The formation of a Jewish state? is not in Germany's interest because a (Jewish) Palestinian state would create additional national power bases for international Jewry such as for example the Vatican State for political Catholicism or Moscow for the Communists. Therefore, there is a German interest in strengthening the Arabs as a counter weight against such possible power growth of the Jews."
Jewish refugees abandoned
The records also show that the news of increased Nazi-Arab cooperation panicked the British government, and caused it to cancel a plan in 1938 to bring to Palestine 20,000 German Jewish refugees, half of them children, facing danger from the Nazis.

Documents show that after deciding that the move would upset Arab opinion, Britain decided to abandon the Jewish refugees to their fate.
"His Majesty's Government asked His Majesty's Representatives in Cairo, Baghdad and Jeddah whether so far as they could judge, feelings in Egypt, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia against the admission of, say 5,000 Jewish children for adoption? would be so strong as to lead to a refusal to send representatives to the London discussions. All three replies were strongly against the proposal, which was not proceeded with," a Foreign Office report said.

"If war were to break out, no trouble that the Jews could occasion us, in Palestine or elsewhere, could weigh for a moment against the importance of winning Muslim opinion to our side," Britain's Minister for Coordination of Defence, Lord Chatfield, told the British cabinet in 1939, shortly before Britain reversed its decision to partition its mandate, promising instead all of the land to the Palestinian Arabs.
