LIKE the diet that guarantees weight loss, the fitness regime which delivers maximum benefit for minimum effort is the Holy Grail of exercise coaches. Now they believe they have found it.

Alternating short bursts of intense activity with brief rest periods delivers more benefit for less exercise, research shows.

As a way of building fitness and muscle power it beats traditional types of long-term exercise such as cycling or walking, scientists say.

"Doing 10 one-minute bursts of activity on an exercise bike, interspersed by one-minute rests, three times a week, works as well in improving muscle as many hours of conventional long-term biking less strenuously," said Professor Martin Gibala of McMaster University, in Ontario, Canada, who led the study.

To achieve equivalent results by traditional endurance training would require more than 10 hours of moderate-intensity cycling in a period of two weeks.

It had been thought that interval training had to involve "all-out" effort at the maximum of which the individual was capable to be effective.

"This was fine for athletes, but not as good for ordinary people extracting themselves from their natural habitat on the sofa.

Previous studies have shown that a quick high-intensity interval training (HIT) involving all-out effort was as good as a long cycle ride (or stroll).

The new study, published in the 'Journal of Physiology', showed that a less extreme form of HIT also works.

The subjects used an ordinary exercise bike and pedalled at about half the speed involved in an all-out sprint. The results were as good.

"Interval training does not have to be 'all-out' to be effective," Prof Gibala said.

It is simple to adapt an exercise regime to resemble interval training.

When out jogging or cycling, individuals can alternate one-minute sprints with one minute of coasting. The length of the sprints, and the intervals between them, can be varied as fitness improves.

Why HIT should be so effective remains unclear. But the excuse of having too little time to exercise is no longer tenable, Prof Gibala says. "It should be possible for the general public."

Recently, it has been reported that religious extremism is on the rise in Gaza. The Sha'aria (Muslim religious law) is spreading, and a 'modesty police' makes sure that men and women are kept separate in public places.

These reports have also shown that 23% of young Gazans, and 30% of the entire population would like to move abroad. Through talks with aid workers in the Gaza Strip, the Israeli Initiative found that the real numbers are much higher, to the extent that it includes almost the whole population. Don't forget, 85% of Gaza's population is made up of refugees.

It turns out that the generous donations that Gaza receives from the world do not include aid towards an important goal: emigration. The international community gives Gazans food and medicines, even weapons, but no one gives the million refugees life with hope. If an organization would allow families to leave the Gaza Strip and find a better future elsewhere, everything would look different for the Gazans and for Israel. Instead, the world and the Palestinian leadership continue to allow the Gazans to live with the delusion that they will 'return' ' a delusion that involves erasing the State of Israel from the map, and returning to 'Palestine.'

The smart and just step for Israel to take would be to fulfill the wishes of the Gazans that want to leave, and allow these refugees to be rehabilitated quickly and efficiently in different countries around the world. The money is there, but it is directed to the wrong place. If hundreds of millions of dollars sent to UNRWA each year were used to rehabilitate these families of refugees, the Palestinian problem would no longer exist, and the entire region would be calmer.

Extracts:

Avner Netanyahu, the 15-year-old son of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and his wife Sara, won the prestigious National Bible Quiz for Youth in Kiryat Shmona on Tuesday evening.

The prime minister flew in from Jerusalem by helicopter, removing himself from duties of state for a couple of hours to watch and, later, to celebrate his son's accomplishment. The packed audience observed a smiling, proud father in Kiryat Shmona, as the town celebrated its 60th anniversary.

The chief coordinator of the competition, Shlomo Ventura, was not surprised at the result, telling The Jerusalem Post that Avner Netanyahu was 'public-school educated, religious, and knows the Bible very well.'

Some 12,000 pupils participated in the Bible Quiz championship this year.

Avner Netanyahu, who is in ninth grade at a school near Jerusalem's Hebrew University, learned Bible from his grandfather, Prof. Benzion Netanyahu, who celebrated his 100th birthday this year.

After winning the Jerusalem district's semifinals with 98 out of 100 points, Avner Netanyahu was in good stead to win, achieving the best result out of all the competitors despite being the youngest in the finals.

His mother's side of the family has a history of success in the competition. His mother and his older brother, Yair, are both former contestants, while his three maternal uncles are all former winners: Matanya Ben-Artzi won the national quiz at age 10, Amatzia Ben-Artzi was runner-up in the world competition, and Hagi Ben-Artzi was world champion.

At last year's competition, Binyamin Netanyahu took a moment to pay tribute to his father in-law, Shmuel Ben-Artzi.

'The Bible is the very essence and foundation of the existence and spirit of the Jewish people,' he said. 'It is also the single most important, remarkable and moving piece ever written.'
