THE COMMON toad may be ugly, warty and squat, but it is blessed with an
extraordinary gift. It has an uncanny ability to predict earthquakes several
days before they occur, according to a remarkable study that documents for the
first time an extraordinary "super-sense" in wild animals.
Scientists studying a colony of breeding toads living in an Italian lake found
that they suddenly disappeared en masse five days before a magnitude 6.3
earthquake struck the town of L'Aquila in central Italy in the early hours of
April 6, 2009. The researchers behind the observations believe there is no
explanation other than the fact that the toads must have been able to detect
some changes in their environment which led them to believe that violent tremors
were imminent.
Within days of the earthquake, the toads had returned to their breeding pool to
continue spawning.
Anecdotal reports of animals behaving strangely before an earthquake are not
unusual, but most cannot be properly assessed scientifically because they rely
on eyewitness accounts after the event.
In this case, however, the scientists were monitoring the toads long before the
earthquake happened.

100000-Armenians-over-genocide-row.html

Extracts:
Turkey has threatened to expel 100,000 Armenians from the country in response to
the US branding the First World War killings of Armenians by Ottoman Turks as
"genocide".
Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Turkish prime minister, said the position of the
immigrants, many of whom have lived there as refugees for a generation, was
being reviewed in the wake of the row.
Armenia claims more than 500,000 of its countrymen died in bitter in-fighting as
the Ottoman Empire disintegrated at the height of the First World War.
Turkey concedes that tens of thousands died in ethnic fighting but vehemently
disputes accusations that massacres were systematically planned.
Tensions with Armenia have recently escalated as a well-organised worldwide
campaign has persuaded the American Congress and Swedish parliament to adopt
resolutions condemning the incidents as "genocide".
Turkish law already makes discussion of genocide an offence punishable by
imprisonment.
"There are currently 170,000 Armenians living in our country. Only 70,000 of
them are Turkish citizens, but we are tolerating the remaining 100,000," said Mr
Erdogan.
"If necessary, I may have to tell these 100,000 to go back to their country
because they are not my citizens. I don't have to keep them in my country."
Mr Erdogan said its neighbour should distance itself from the overseas community
leading the lobbying.
He said: "Armenia has an important decision to make. It should free itself from
its attachment to the diaspora. Any country which cares for Armenia, namely the
US, France and Russia, should primarily help Armenia to free itself from the
influence of the diaspora."
But yesterday there was uproar in Armenai over the suggestion of deportations.
Hrayr Karapetyan, an Armenian MP, condemned Mr Erdogan's remarks as blackmail.
"The statement once again proves that there is an Armenian genocide threat in
present Turkey, thus world community
should pressurise Ankara to recognise [the] genocide," he said.
Turkey allows visa free access from much of the Caucuses and Central Asia. As a
result its cities are populated by a high number of illegal immigrants.
The small community of Armenians who hold Turkish citizenship have often borne
the strain of the country's political tensions.
4. Europeans Increasingly Anti-Semitic
'Jews talk about Holocaust too much'

Extracts:
A comparison with the 2007 survey indicates that levels of anti-Semitism have
remained steady in six of the seven countries tested.
The United Kingdom was the only country in which there was a marked decline.
Meanwhile, the percentage of those believing that Jews "have too much power in
the business world" increased by 7% in Hungary, 6% in Poland and 5% in France.
Overall, nearly half of those surveyed in the seven countries believe that Jews
are more loyal to Israel than to their own country. A majority of respondents in
Germany, Poland and Spain believe that this statement is "probably true;" in
Spain, it is 64%.
Large portions of the European public continue to believe that Jews "talk about
the Holocaust too much." Overall, 44% of those surveyed believe this statement
is "probably true". A majority of respondents in Austria, Hungary and Poland
believe it to be true.
5. US
Achievements

Brit-Am Note: The extracts below from a recent NY Times article attribute
much of the US military achievements in Afghanistan to the use of drones.
The article fails to mention that these drones are an Israeli invention and
technological development.
Another point to notice is that much of the anti-American fighting in Pakistan
and Afghanistan is sustained by Arab militants from outside the area.
These are most likely from Saudia.

Extracts:
PESHAWAR, Pakistan ' A stepped-up campaign of American drone strikes over
the past three months has battered Al Qaeda and its Pakistani and Afghan
brethren in the tribal area of North Waziristan, according to a mid-ranking
militant and supporters of the government there.
The strikes have cast a pall of fear over an area that was once a free zone for
Al Qaeda and the Taliban, forcing militants to abandon satellite phones and
large gatherings in favor of communicating by courier and moving stealthily in
small groups, they said.
The drones, operated by the C.I.A., fly overhead sometimes four at a time,
emitting a beelike hum virtually 24 hours a day, observing and tracking targets,
then unleashing missiles on their quarry, they said.
The strikes have sharpened tensions between the local tribesmen and the
militants, who have dumped bodies with signs accusing the victims of being
American spies in Miram Shah, the main town in North Waziristan, they said.
The impact of the drone strikes on the militants' operations ' on freedom of
movement, ability to communicate and the ease of importing new recruits to
replace those who have been killed ' has been difficult to divine because North
Waziristan, at the nether reaches of the tribal area, is virtually sealed from
the outside world.
By all reports, the bombardment of North Waziristan, and to a lesser extent
South Waziristan, has become fast and furious since a combined Taliban and Qaeda
suicide attack on a C.I.A. base in Khost, in southern Afghanistan, in late
December.
Militants now sneak into villages two at a time to sleep, he said. Some
homeowners were refusing to rent space to Arabs, who are associated with Al
Qaeda, for fear of their families' being killed by the drones, he said.
In public, the Pakistani government opposes the drones, citing a violation of
sovereignty.
Under American pressure, however, the Pakistani intelligence agency,
Inter-Services Intelligence, has provided important intelligence for targets,
American and Pakistani officials have said.
But increasingly the Americans appear to have developed their own sources, the
militant said.
An influx of young Arabs turned up in North Waziristan recently, presumably to
replace some of the older Arabs who had been killed by the drones. But many
militants assumed that some of these Arabs were actually American agents, he
said.
'Al Qaeda is very careful who they take among the new Arab recruits because they
are informants for America,' the militant said.
