Yair,
I don't know for sure the context of Isaiah 9, but I don't agree that the emphasis here is an explicit civil war between Manasseh and Ephraim.  Mr. S quoted the verse as:

"The land is burned up, and the people shall be as fuel for the fire; no man shall spare his brother . . . . Every man shall eat the flesh of his own arm.  Manasseh shall devour Ephraim, and Ephraim Manasseh" (Isaiah 9:19-21).

In the King James version it does refer to violence between M and E , but the emphasis seems to be on their unified opposition to Judah.

"Through the wrath of the LORD of hosts is the land darkened, and the people shall be as the fuel of the fire: no man shall spare his brother. And he shall snatch on the right hand, and be hungry; and he shall eat on the left hand, and they shall not be satisfied: they shall eat every man the flesh of his own arm: Manasseh, Ephraim; and Ephraim, Manasseh: and they together shall be against Judah. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still."

I suspect this is a general warning of civil war between the tribes of ancient Israel, with an emphasis on E and M leading a revolt against Judah.

Neither the US War of Independence in the 1770s nor the War of 1812 between GB and the US qualify as devouring one another.  In the first war the US barely escaped the orbit of GB and became a new nation.  In 1812 the US was thwarted in its desire to control Canada, but succeeded in acquiring control over the lands west of Mississippi river with their victory at the Battle of New Orleans.  Both of these wars were virtual draws in military actions, but with the US achieving most of its important strategic goals.

I suppose one could say that in the US Civil War M devoured E, since M (the North) won and invaded E, but even here it was more of a forced return to the fold then a 'devouring'.

Furthermore other nations have had equally or even more destructive civil wars, such as the Hundred Years war in Germany, the overthrow of the Czars in Russia, and so on.

I do agree that GB and the US, as well as all the tribal nations of Europe are appeasing the enemies of modern Israel and that this is destructive for everyone involved.

That is usually the main reason one writes to the editor in the first place!
We are the editor.

Shalom Steven,

I read your comments about Isaiah's prophecy re: Manasseh and Ephraim, and found them fascinating.  America's Revolutionary War and the civil war terminology of Isaiah's prophecy do fit what happened in history. I think that Ephraim was/is primarily the British people, but it is well-documented that the British favored the South in the Civil War and were close to intervening in the US Civil War over the cotton trade and other factors. I'm familiar with one little-known episode from the Civil War that President Lincoln was so concerned the British fleet was about to intervene in the war that he made an agreement for a Russian battle fleet to be present on the East Coast to help the smaller American fleet deter the British from intervening on the side of the Confederacy. I've attached two links from two very different websites that I found via a quick websearch for items about this little-known incident. The first site reproduces a 1904 newspaper article that mentions this episode and the second one comes from an odd site for a story about the US Civil War.
