1. Jane: Correction.
The Brit-Am ability to hear other people's points of view
Re: Brit-Am Now no. 1402

#1. Jane: Your ability to hear other people's points of view. Thank you

http://britam.org/now/1402Now.html#Jane

Hi Yair

I think you accidentally deleted my main point making my commendation a bit jumbled. Here are the words in bold:

"I just wanted to share that for several years now I have admired, your ability to hear other people's points of view, - even if you don't always agree with everything they write (and even though I don't always agree with what you write either :-). You wouldn't even attempt to share anybody's criticism with us after examining it if you were entirely close-minded."

I was wondering if you would please correct this on http://britam.org/now/1402Now.html.

I do mean what I wrote and would like my thoughts to be as clear as possible

Best of blessings!
Jane

2. Bob Briggs: Asenath and Historical Sources
RE Brit-Am Now no. 1402

#4. Bob Briggs: Who Was Asenath?

YAIR said:
#There is however NO Biblical Source that justifies identifying Asenath as anything else than Egyptian.
We suspect that the frequent attempts to attribute a non-Egyptian origin to
Asenath may emanate from racial prejudice.#

I fully agree, Yair, there is NO Biblical Source which identifies exactly who Asenath might be. You have said yourself that she was "probably" Egyptian, which means you aren't certain either. Nor has anyone else who I have read made absolute statements as to who she may have been, or offered historical evidence to support conclusively that she was an Egyptian. For all we know, she may have been, but I know of no one who can absolutely prove it. Asenath's name is mentioned only briefly in the Bible, so my efforts were to understand from non-Biblical historical sources who she might have actually descended from. My theory may be wrong, but if so, it is honestly wrong. If the historical sources are also wrong, I can only assume they are honestly wrong as well. I believe it is better to NOT assume that these authors are necessarily racially biased, although it is certainly possible that some are.

As for me personally, I have no racial prejudice. I truly believe all races are all made in the image and likeness of the Eternal, Creator God. If we all truly believed that, we would be living in a totally different world than we now unfortunately live in. But, as many Jews and Christians believe, there are better times coming for mankind.

Brit-Am Reply:
When we made the remark about Racial Prejudice we did not intend you personally but rather the whole phenomenon of evident preferential thinking against Asenath having been Egyptian.

As for I, myself, having had doubts on the subject. This should largely be attributed to a personal characteristic style of expression.
My mother was born in England and brought up there. My father was Welsh but like most people in Wales really considered himself English and acted accordingly.
Unlike the rest of the world the English will not say that the sun will definitely rise tomorrow morning.
They will say that based on past experience all the chances are that it will do so.
I am not English but in some ways must have acquired English influences.
If I believe something my tendency is to preface explanations with such qualifications as "probable", "most likely", etc.  These expressions are not necessarily meant to express doubt or uncertainty.
["Not necessarily" is another favorite: There we go again!]

3. Richard: The Union Jack and the Arms of Jacob
RE: Ephraim and Menassah and the blessing by Jacob. The account is in Genesis 48:11-21
I have read somewhere (I have the paper here in my office but cannot presently lay my hands on it) that the crossing of the hands (arms) of Jacob in blessing the two boys is significant to the British Flag and the "cross bars" or "X" on the flag. It was not an accident that this "crossing of Jacobs arms" to bless the boys happened. This was directed by God. The flag of Great Britain is a combination of the union of 3 countries, England, Ireland, and Scotland. Also it is said that the name Union "Jack" is a take-off or corruption of the name "Jacob"... Jac or Jack. Today people name their boys Jacob and they are often nicknamed "Jake" which could be a corruption of Jac or Jack or even Jaque.
Also, I have read where Jeremiah had traveled to the isles or England/ Ireland where Tea Tephi is buried. Tea traveled with Jeremiah when he left with an entourage from the coasts of North Africa after the dispersion.
Thanks for your attention, Richard

4. Onika Nugent: The Hyksos were Ammorites
 re: Brit-Am Now no. 1402

From what I've read, Asenath and Zaphnath-panea are referring to the Asian goddess Anath.

When Joseph sold the grain it says the Egyptians ended up selling their land and moving into the cities (becoming serfs) from one end of Egypt to the other.  This sounds like how the Egyptians were moved from the north to the south.  Only the priests were allowed to keep their land (and I'm assuming the Israelites in the Delta area as well).  I don't believe Nahor is actually Aramaean because he's not a descendent of Aram, even though he lived in his territory.  I don't believe the Israelites are Ammorites because Abraham talks of them as a different people.  I do believe the Hyksos were Ammorites, and possibly other groups mixed with them as well.  The Ammorites had chariots and bows ( Jacob talks about obtaining land with his sword and bow) and adopted the customs of the areas they took over.

Shalom Yair
I've also read, probably from Herman Hoeh that Nebuchadnezzar carried the Egyptians captive to India at the time of Jeremiah.

6. Diane Herndon: Was the Torah Written on Translucent Sapphrire Stone?

Yair shalom,

Is it a fact that God  originally wrote the law on sapphire stone to present it to Moses on the Mt.when He called Mosesto come up.(Ex.)
I read that this was the stone used, pounded paper thin, rolled inot a scroll and translucent

God bless you, Diane

Brit-Am Reply:
Shalom,
I think there is a
Midrash that says something along those lines.
A
Midrash however does not have the authority of Scripture. Sometimes
the intention has symbolic or mystical significance. At other times its purpose may be illustrative or educational. Or it may reflect an existing tradition or intuited insight.
God bless you
Yair

7. Yair Davidiy: Asenath Was Egyptian!

The Bible says that Joseph married Asenath.
[Genesis 41:45] AND PHARAOH CALLED JOSEPH'S NAME ZAPHNATH-PAANEAH [Revealer of Hidden Things]; AND HE GAVE HIM TO WIFE ASENATH THE DAUGHTER OF POTIPHERAH PRIEST [or Official Adminstrator] OF ON. AND JOSEPH WENT OUT OVER ALL THE LAND OF EGYPT.
Joseph was made an official in the Egyptian Administration.
Pharoah was the match-maker and gave him to wife the daughter of another high official in Egypt.
If this official was a non-Egyptian the Bible did not see it necessary to say so. Most people in Egypt must have been Egyptian. It therefore follows that Asenath was Egyptian.

An Egyptian element in the constitution of Joseph could help throw light on later developments.

Jeroboam ben Nebat from the Tribe of Ephraim lead the rebellion of the Ten Tribes against the House of David.
During the reign of Solomon he was an outlaw and took refuge in Egypt. It was from Egypt that Jeroboam returned to lead the Ten Tribes into secession from Judah.
[1-Kings 11:40] SOLOMON SOUGHT THEREFORE TO KILL JEROBOAM. AND JEROBOAM AROSE, AND FLED INTO EGYPT, UNTO SHISHAK KING OF EGYPT, AND WAS IN EGYPT UNTIL THE DEATH OF  SOLOMON.

Archaeological findings from Samaria show that the Northern Kingdom before being taken into exile by the Assyrians was strongly influenced not only by Canaanite influences but also by Egyptian ones.
Elements from Egyptian mythology are a favorite motif in the artwork of the Ancient Kingdom of Israel.

This strong possibility that the mother of Ephraim and Manasseh was Egyptian seems to have aroused strong emotional responses.

Entering Asenath in the Search Engine for the Brit-Am Web Site gives us 28 entries.
http://www.britam.org/SearchEngines.html
Almost half of them concern the question as to whether or not Asenath was Egyptian.
All this where we have no Biblical evidence whatsoever to say that she was not while the statistical probability indicates that she was!
This is evidently an important question in the eyes of quite a few people.
Why should this be?
The Egyptian were an advanced people. They built a great civilization with numerous achievements in science, engineering, architecture, art, artisanship, military advancement, international politics, etc.
They ruled over other peoples.
All nations of the earth were influenced by them.
They were later cursed by the Almighty and reduced in stature.
They did not lack intrinsic merit.

Ezekiel 29:14 and I will restore the fortunes of Egypt, and bring them back to the land of Pathros, the land of their origin; and there they shall be a lowly kingdom.
Ezekiel 29:15 It shall be the most lowly of the kingdoms, and never again exalt itself above the nations; and I will make them so small that they will never again rule over the nations.
Ezekiel 29: 16 And it shall never again be the reliance of the house of Israel, recalling their iniquity, when they turn to them for aid. Then they will know that I am the Lord God.

In general the Biblical attitude seems to be not so much that any person or nation has or has not abilities but rather a spiritual element enables the utilization of abilities that are always there.
For People who believe in the Bible and live a good life there are very high chances that their children or grand-children will be succesful.

Some of the Ten Tribes after being exiled for a while sojourned in Egypt.
Scotta a daughter of Pharoah, according to legend, gave her name to the Scots of Ireland and Scotland.
Archaeological Findings in the British Isles show that an ongoing connection with Ancient Egypt existed.

Some Biblical Verses Concerning Egypt:

And the LORD shall be known to Egypt, and the Egyptians shall know the LORD in that day, and shall do sacrifice and oblation; yea, they shall vow a vow unto the LORD, and perform it.-- Isaiah 19:21

And the LORD shall smite Egypt: he shall smite and heal it: and they shall return even to the LORD, and he shall be entreated of them, and shall heal them. -- Isaiah 19:22

In that day shall there be a highway out of Egypt to Assyria, and the Assyrian shall come into Egypt, and the Egyptian into Assyria, and the Egyptians shall serve with the Assyrians.-- Isaiah 19:23

In that day shall Israel be the third with Egypt and with Assyria, even a blessing in the midst of the land:-- Isaiah 19:24

Whom the LORD of hosts shall bless, saying, Blessed be Egypt my people, and Assyria the work of my hands, and Israel mine inheritance.-- Isaiah 19:25

9. Proverbs 9 (New King James Version)

1 Wisdom has built her house,
      She has hewn out her seven pillars;
2 She has slaughtered her meat,
      She has mixed her wine,
She has also furnished her table.
3 She has sent out her maidens,
She cries out from the highest places of the city,
4 "Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!"
As for him who lacks understanding, she says to him,
5 "Come, eat of my bread
And drink of the wine I have mixed.
       6 Forsake foolishness and live,
And go in the way of understanding.
7 He who corrects a scoffer gets shame for himself,
And he who rebukes a wicked man only harms himself.
       8 Do not correct a scoffer, lest he hate you;
Rebuke a wise man, and he will love you.
       9 Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser;
Teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.
10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom,
And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
11 For by me your days will be multiplied,
And years of life will be added to you.
12 If you are wise, you are wise for yourself,
And if you scoff, you will bear it alone.?
The Way of Folly

    13 A foolish woman is clamorous;
She is simple, and knows nothing.
14 For she sits at the door of her house,
On a seat by the highest places of the city,
15 To call to those who pass by,
Who go straight on their way:
       16 "Whoever is simple, let him turn in here";
And as for him who lacks understanding, she says to him,
       17 "Stolen water is sweet,
And bread eaten in secret is pleasant."
18 But he does not know that the dead are there,
That her guests are in the depths of hell.[a]
