##The name Amerigo derives from an old Gothic name, Amalrich. In all its forms found in Europe (Greek "Aimulos," Latin "Aemelius") the underlying meaning was that of work. Amalrich, which literally meant work ruler, or designator of tasks, might be freely translated as master workman. Old German forms of the name were Amalrich, Almerich, Emmerich; the Spanish form was Almerigo; in England it was Almerick, or Merica in old families in Yorkshire. It appeared in feminine forms in Amelia and Emily; its masculine forms were Amery, Emeric, and Emery. But as Charlotte Mary Yonge wrote in her History of Christian Names (1884), it was "the Italian form, Amerigo, which was destined to the most noted use ? which should hold fast that most fortuitous title, whence thousands of miles, and millions of men, bear the appellation of the forgotten forefather of a tribe of the Goths ? Amalrich, the work ruler; a curiously appropriate title for the new world of labor and of progress."##
Some Hungarian scholars believe Vespucci was named after Saint Emeric (c. 1000?1031), son of the first king of Hungary. He was known in Latin as Sanctus Americus, after being canonized for his pious life and purity.
"America" derives from the name of a Bristol-based Welshman, Richard Ameryk, emerged early in the 20th century.

meaning Land of the Dark.
Brit-Am Note:
Brit-Am accepts the most commonly held (and moist historically sound) account that America received its name in honor of Amerigo Vespucci.
We also hold (contrary to others) that the name Americo derives from an Early Medieval Latinized form of the Hebrew name "Ha-Macheri".
Our source for this claim is derived from documentary evidence quoted by
Arthur J. ZUCKERMAN "A Jewish Princedom in Feudal France, 768-900", New York, 1972. Zuckerman p.131 n.38 "Aimerico", and "Aimericus".
Zuckerman describes how Machir ("Aimericus") became a legend whose name was celebrated in the ballads of Southern France and neighboring regions.

The story behind the name "Canada" on the other hand is equally mysterious, but it involves only a handful of theories.
The most widely accepted one is that it derives from "Kanata" which is believed to be an Iroquoian word that means village or settlement. Apparently when the French met the Iroquoians on the St. Lawrence River, they believed that was what the Indians meant when they were pointing to the shore. It should be noted, however, that the French and Iroquoians were never good at communicating with each other, and eventually became bitter enemies.
An interesting theory is that the name "Canada" was coined by Spanish looking for gold on the shores of North America. Unable and apparently peeved that they wasted their time looking for something that wasn't there, the Spanish showed their contempt for this region by naming it "acanada" which means "there is nothing here".
It was not at all unusual for cartographers to make mistakes such as missing a letter. Eventually, proponents of this theory say, one letter was dropped and the word "Canada" was born.
What's intriguing about this theory is that this is not the only name the Spanish had come up for Canada. On some of their maps, they also named it "Capa di Nada" which means "Cape Nothing". Again, that name also reflected the attitude that if an area had no gold lying on the beach as they were passing by, it was not worth a glorious name. And once again, if a cartographer lost four consecutive letters, the word "Canada" appears.
Others point to a place in India as the source of the name "Canada". They say that the name derives from an Indian region called Kanara, but they fail to establish a credible connection between India and North America.

We see from the above notes that when Canada was given its name, other alternatives were considered.
Among the names that it was proposed for Canada were
Borealia from 'borealis', the Latin word for 'northern'; compared with Australia (Meaning South Land)
and
Norland.
Both Borealia and Norland connote Land of the North.

Rabbi Kook was in effect the Chief Rabbi of the Jewish community in Palestine under the Turks and then after World War 1 and the Balfour Declaration under the British. The Balfour Declaration (1917) said that the British viewed with favor the establishment of a Jewish State in the Land of Israel and would work towards it. This was followed by the British Mandate (licensed control) over Palestine and the foundation for the later State of Israel.
Rabbi Kook seems to attribute the Balfour Declaration and the favorable events after it as emanating from the return of the Jews to Britain. This was due in part to Rabbi Manasseh ben Israel (1604-1657) who interceded with Oliver Cromwell and other English dignitaries. Rabbi Manasseh ben Israel linked this activity of his to a search for the Lost Ten Tribes whom he thought were to be found amongst the Amerindians and other peoples some of whom (it was then believed, e.g. the Scythians) were ancestral to the British.
Rabbi Avraham HaCohen Kook:
## It is Wondrous and awesome in our eyes to consider [the effects of] the arousal of a pure spirit in the heart of the Great Sages of Israel from Ancient Times to the Present Day (and we too saw the wonder of it) of the concept of Finding the Lost Ten Tribes. The urge to find the Lost Ten Tribes struck a deep root in the heart of that great man, Rabbi Menasseh ben Yisrael. It came to pass that [it resulted in] the return of our brothers [the Jews] to Britain. Due to this we, in our own time, are viewing an aspect of the Growth of Future Redemption. This is taking place after the great events of the [First World] War and the British [Balfour] Declaration concerning our National Home. All this is certainly the doing of Divine Providence. In the end it will be revealed and apparent that through these causes will come the Redemption of the Whole community bringing us closer to our Final Salvation, with the Help of God. ##
