Did the Phoenicians Discover the New World? The Phoenician coin presumed to contain a map of the ancient world according to Geologist Mark McMenamin of Mount Holyoke College. The coin is in Dr. McMenamin's collection.

Did Atlantis lay in England?

The American geologist and fossil hunter Mark McMenamin claims to have found a world map on Carthagian coins from 350-320 BC. (See a page on the website Phoenicia.org.) The coin shows a horse; under the feet of the horse is a design that was first interpreted as writing, but which is a map according to McMenamin. In the middle is the Mediterranean Sea with Spain. On the left there is a blob which McMenamin interprets as America, but which looks more like Britain and Ireland in my opinion. Still a very interesting discovery! That Britain is depicted too far south is probably due to the fact that the Phoenicians used maps on rolls of papyrus. There was no space to draw Britain in the right place (compare the Roman Peutinger map). Britain is shown just where Plato said that Atlantis was situated: outside the Pillars of Hercules! The two dots above Spain that McMenamin interprets as Ireland and Britain may represent Normandy and Britanny. Tacitus (Agricola 11) writes that Britain is 'opposite Spain'; some of its inhabitants have dark, curly hair and may have come from Spain.

Questions concerning Hebraic and Phoenician connections with the west

in Ancient Times should and do interest a great many people.

Nevertheless I would venture to claim that only on the Brit-Am site does

one find such a concentration of hard verifiable fact on the subject

and other subjects of related nature.

This is only a fraction of the actual information in our possession

mostly in the form of rough notes that (God willing) we will work through and publish

in the form of books, and articles in our magazine and on our websites.

4. Ancient Britain, Phoenicians, Horses

In Ancient Times the horse was a very valuable and much valued animal.

One can therefore expect to find the horse used as a symbol in different cultures

without there existing any connection between them.

Even so the common use of the horse as a symbol may be pertinent as an additional proof

of connection when taken into account along with numerous other pieces of evidence.

The Phoenicians are justifiably usually associated with seafaring but they also placed a great stock in cavalry.

Phoenician and Carthaginian armies fought against the Assyrians, Babylonians,

Greeks, Macedonians, Romans, and numerous peoples in Cyprus, the Middle East,

North Africa, Sicily, Sardinia, Corsica, Italy, France, Spain and probably other regions as well.

More often than not they were successful.

They also established colonies that built impressive structures and applied advanced agricultural

methods. It was not all sailing.

The horse was a symbol in frequent use by the Phoenicians and Carthaginian descendants of the

Phoenicians.

The horse was also a popular symbol in Britain prior to the Roman conquest

and the "Phoenicians" did exert an influence upon the British and probably settled amongst them.

...Secondly, there is film from Spain, obtained by Dr. Maxine Asher and diver Francisco Salazar Casero that shows a submerged city with pottery, fireplaces, walls etc. that also corresponds to Plato's date of the sinking of Atlantis. Since the site in Spain corroborates to Plato's story and location for Atlantis (the Gates of Hercules-Gibraltar and Tangier), the Spain site may be closer to the truth concerning the last location of the continent which, at one time, spanned the entire Atlantic Ocean....

According to Barry Fell, in "America B.C.", there are matching inscriptions across the Atlantic. In other words, the same inscriptions found in Ireland and in the Mediterranean, correspond to inscriptions in Vermont and in other areas of the U.S. East Coast. This is also confirmed by Dr. Cyrus Gordon who, in his book "Before Columbus" also made similar linguistic comparisons. In the book "The Roots of Civilizations" Alexander Marshack shows pictures of highly developed notation writing found in the Pyrenees Mountains area and in France, which corresponds to similar inscriptions across the Atlantic. Dr. Cyrus Gordon also confirmed to Dr. Maxine Asher in a letter, that the inscriptions she found leading to the Rock of Gibraltar were indeed ancient writing and were brought down from the caves around Gibraltar by Generalissimo Francisco Franco when he was in power in order to create this roadway.

Furthermore, archaeologists have found what they believe to be the real Tarshish at Huelva in Spain...Tarshish now sits underwater near what is believed to be the site of Atlantis near Cadiz, Spain. Cadiz was originally called Gades or Kaddesh...

The indigenous people on both sides of the ocean, but particularly in the Americas speak of coming from Atlan, Aztlan and different variations of this word which means "land that was in the water"...

We also find that the Mediterranean people and the peoples of the Americas had much in common. They were Semitic in nature, they had common burial practices, many mummified their dead, they had common pyramids and many Egyptian glyphs resemble those made by the Mayans. We also know that land did cover the Atlantic in an early time period and that migrations from Atlantis occurred when people moved to the European continent and to the Americas...
