1. Anglo-Saxons
Crossed to England in Search of Cattle Pasture
From: authurn2002
Subject: [Germanic-L] The Langhaus and cattle farming
I have wondered for sometime about the near total absence of the
typical north germanic langhaus, where humans live at one end of the
building whilst the animals live in byres at the other end, in anglo
saxon england. If gr benh user were introduced into England by the
anglo saxons, why doesn't the langhaus make an appearance?
I came across a paper by Haio Zimmermann, 'Favourable conditions for
cattle farming, one reason for the Anglo-Saxon migration over the
north sea?', who argues that, because of a milder climate, byres were
not necessary in England making cattle rearing a much easier proposition.
Although the climate seems to have taken a turn for the worse towards
the end of the roman period, Britain's climate appears to still be
characterised by warmer winters and cooler summers than similar
latitudes in northern Europe. Writing in the pre-medieval cold period
Bede states that 'the island is wealthy in crop and trees, and
suitable for cattle, and in some places it produces vines.'
A warmer climate means that cattle can be wintered outside as there is
more biomass which is less frequently covered by snow. The amount of
hay required for winter fodder becomes much less in England than that
required on the continent. It's an easier and more productive
lifestyle and faced with the choice of working harder to produce the
same or migrating to more conducive conditions, the anglo saxons chose
to migrate to england.
