1. Question on family crests, tartan-designs, and Texas:
Question:
>I have been researching my British family history, and have a question
>regarding family crests. Are they of significance in regard to the Britam beliefs?
> Are the symbols on the crests indicative of the tribes? My family crest
> has a number of lions on it. I was told by one of my friends that the
> symbolism is related to the tribes, but have never read anything about
> it. What do you know about this?
>Also is it true that the "coat of many colors" worn by Joseph was tartan?
>What do you know about this?
>Thankyou so much for your newsletter! I have been learning so much and
>appreciate it so much. Also could you comment on what the tribes primarily
>make up Texas, we have a long family history here, thank you again. Charlotte
Answers:
a. Regarding family crests:
See the genealogy section on our web-site.
Betty (who is responsible for this section) knows a lot in this area.
Family crests are usually relatively recent but they can help
and do have significance.
b. Regarding the lion symbol:
Judah is represented by a lion
but Ephraim, and Dan, are also compared to lions.
c. Regarding the "coat of many colors":
Yes. The "coat of many colors" probably did bear a tartan design. Some of
the Jewish defenders of Masada wore tartan cloaks imported from Britain!
The terms "many colors" (Pasim) has been interpreted as "mishbatzot"
(tartan-pattern squares) and as "many colors"
and as lines. Taking all these explanations together a tartan type colored
pattern is the most logical explanation.
Egyptian depiction of people from the Israelite area sometimes depict
tartan type clothing.
d. Regarding Texas:
I am not an expert on individual American States. In general Texas (like
most of the south and parts of the west USA)
is dominated by Gilead of Manasseh with a strong infusion from Ephraim and
other tribes.
2. Redheads in Canada?
>I have been told that 25% of the worlds redheades are in the maritime
>provinces in Canada.THE SURE IS A LOT OF THEM! Could this be because of
>the fact that moat of their ancesters were from the British Iles -many
>from Irland and Scotland.?The rest came from France [Gaels]?
>
>Do you have any information on the albans and the migration to Iceland
>,Greenland and newfoundland? The date was in the fifth century?
>
>Thank you for your kindness.
>
>Lynnr McGuire
Answer:

more on both counts,

4. Question on Edom
Question:
>Hello Yair,
>I have been buried in the old school books (I am taking a year long
>course) and haven't had much time to devote to anyone. That does not mean
>that I do not care, it just means I am temporarily buried under. I just
>wanted to ask a huge question re: Edom. If Edom is Germany which sided
>with Palestine in WW1 and WW2, then the Celts who married Germans...well
>does having Edomite blood bring them under condemnation?
>God loved Isaac and hated Esau (Edom) as he put his stomach before his
>birthright etc. and his offspring warred against Isreal. Did not God
>prophecy a total destruction/extermination of Edom? I also noted that in
>Ezekial Temah and Dedan (Arab tribes) were prohecied against for the
>latter part of days....which Arab tribes are Temah and Dedan now? Also
>Edom Idumea- aren't the Berber or Algerians proper part of those
>people-the Temanites....
I am going on memory and am middle aged lol! so you must forgive me if I
have anything wrong in spelling or whatever...but I have a burning
curiousity about this.
Thanks

a. Edom was not cursed but rather blessed.
see what we wrote in our commentary to Genesis:
[Genesis 27:38] AND ESAU SAID UNTO HIS FATHER, HAST THOU BUT ONE BLESSING,
MY FATHER? BLESS ME, EVEN ME ALSO, O MY FATHER. AND ESAU LIFTED UP HIS
VOICE, AND WEPT.
[Genesis 27:39] AND ISAAC HIS FATHER ANSWERED AND SAID UNTO HIM, BEHOLD,
THY DWELLING SHALL BE THE FATNESS OF THE EARTH, AND OF THE DEW OF HEAVEN
FROM ABOVE;
Esau is here promised a fertile place to dwell in. The Talmud says that at
one stage this was Magna Greacia or Southern Italy which was once very
fertile. From there the sons of Esau moved on. Some Christian commentaries
say the verse should be read: THY DWELLING SHALL BE [far away from] THE
FATNESS OF THE EARTH: This does not fit the Hebrew. It appears in some
translations and is accepted by several Christian exegetes. It may be that
the land southeast of Israel that is known as Edom is not regarded as being
terribly fertile and the translators were trying to rationalize their
translation and adapt the translated meaning according to their own
understanding of reality. Against this it can be said that the Land of Edom
was once much more fertile than it now is. Also Edom was scattered to
several areas. A passage in an inscription from the ancient city of Ugarit
on the north Syrian coast speaks of the well-watered land of Edom. There
was a region belonging to Edom in the north.
There was a Land in the region of the Habor River in northern Syria known
as "The Land of Edom".
Edomites were prominent in the hierarchies of Babylon, Ugarit, Assyria,
and Phoenician Tyre.
[Genesis 27:40] AND BY THY SWORD SHALT THOU LIVE, AND SHALT SERVE THY
BROTHER; AND IT SHALL COME TO PASS WHEN THOU SHALT HAVE THE DOMINION, THAT
THOU SHALT BREAK HIS YOKE FROM OFF THY NECK.
<<BY THY SWORD SHALT THOU LIVE, AND SHALT SERVE THY BROTHER>>: Esau was a
military man. The Talmud says that every war requires the presence of Esau
in order to achieve victory.
Esau (Edom) was promised that he would dwell in fertile blessed lands and
be a warrior people.
He would often be dominated by Jacob (Israel) bit not always so and from
time to time he would be enabled to reverse the situation.
It is prophesied that because of his role in history of persecuting Judah
and opposing Edom will be punished
(see Obadiah and several other sources)
On the individual level everything depends on an individuals own actions.
Only on a national level do the laws of
general blessing or curse become apparent. An individual can always take
himself out of the generality, for better or for worse.
Edom assimilated amongst Germanic, Celtic, other European, and Jewish
groups. See the discussion in our book "Ephraim".
Some sources suggest that a remnant from Edom will return with repentance.
We were commanded to treat those of Edom who dwell amongst us as ultimate
equals:
[Deuteronomy 23:7] THOU SHALT NOT ABHOR AN EDOMITE; FOR HE IS THY BROTHER:
THOU SHALT NOT ABHOR AN EGYPTIAN; BECAUSE THOU WAST A STRANGER IN HIS LAND.
[Deuteronomy 23:8] THE CHILDREN THAT ARE BEGOTTEN OF THEM SHALL ENTER INTO
THE CONGREGATION OF THE LORD IN THEIR THIRD GENERATION.
In addition to all that, we have shown in our book "Joseph" and mentioned
frequently on our list that most of those who migrated from
Germany to the USA were of Israelite descent whereas most of those who
stayed behind in Germany were mixed descendants of Gomer, Edom, Canaan, and
others.
It is possible that Edomites were also intermixed with Arab-speaking
peoples but conceptually these are considered to be dominated by Ishmael
whereas Continental Europe in many ways is dominated by elements from Edom.
