1. The Jastrow Dictionary on Talmud
Brit-Am Understanding of the Tartan Patterned Many Colored Coat of Joseph Confirmed Yet Again!

Marcus Jastrow notes (p.1166) the verb "PIS" meaning to divide, split, distribute. This verb was associated was associated by the Sages with the word PAS (plural "pasim" as in Cotonet Pasim, Genesis 37:3) in the Midrash.

Jastrow (p.1191) translates the PAS in "cotonet pasim" of Joseph (Genesis 37:3) as meaning stripe. He gives examples.

Jastrow points out (p.1196) that a word from the same root "PIS, PISPAS" can mean colored stripes or checkers of different colors and brings examples from Talmudic and Midrashic Literature,

1) cut and polished stone block...
2) cube, die.
3) check (in garments), square or stripe cmp. PAS.
e.g. # Paspasin... the faintest checkers (or stripes) [Hebrew: "pasapsin"] of the Leviathan's skin outshine the sun (v. Yalk. Lev. 653).- #
4) voting tablet, verdict.

In Modern Hebrew "PasiPas" (spelt with the same word root as "Pas" as in "Pasim") means a mosaic since it is comprised of colored squares!
A "cotonet pasim" could therefore have been a coat of many colors in a checkered (tartan type) pattern!

In the light of the sources taken as a complementary whole the suggestion that a "cotonet pasim" was a cloak of several colors in a tartan type pattern
should be accepted as a first choice. It is the answer that fits the different sources more than any other.



2. Question on Ptolemy, Gomara, and Sambation.

Ptolemy appears to be only available in Latin or Greek. No modern translation and edition seems to be available which is a great pity.
In most major libraries however one should find several reproductions of Medieval and Renaissance editions of Ptolemy. These works contain maps and text.
The excerpt you quoted from the Brit-Am web site is an extract from "The Tribes".

Everything we have mentioned in our explanation to the maps in The Tribes parallels that of Ptolemy, e.g. if we mention a place name in Media look up the Maps that Ptolemy dedicates to Media and the text of Ptolemy accompanying them.
In the text of Ptolemy the Sambatae are mentioned together with Adiabene and Garameos towards the end of the entry on Babylonia and just before the one on Media.
Gomara is listed (just after Arbela) in the region of Media (Media Regio) at the co-ordinates used by Ptolemy 81 1/3 33 1/2 .

I am amazed at how much twisting goes on to try to advance the theory that the patriarchs were black and not light. Black hair is better for braiding, so the people must have been black and not had straight hair? That is illogical reasoning at its worst.
 
Scripture is quite clear that Abraham's grandson, Esau was red (ruddy). David was ruddy. When I think of a ruddy complexion, I think of the classical Irish or Scots-Irish redhead, a red haired Jew in Israel, Russia or Europe, or perhaps even a light African with light skin and hair. There are more examples, but these are some that come to mind.
 
I'm not vested in this and am not prejudiced against Africans or blacks.
 
I've just seen too many angry, black Hebrew media presentations trying to assert that the patriarchs and all the way back to Adam were black and it doesn't strike a chord with me at all--not in logical reasoning, "proofs", or even the spirit in which such assertions are brought forth.
 
Also, interestingly, one commentator here said that a baby is white before the black pigmentation appears. At least at face value, that appears to be contrary to that person's assertion of first black, and then white came later down the genealogical tree.
 
I really don't believe that the proofs are there for a black Adam, Abraham, or Shemitic people. 
 
All that aside, I think it's too late to be zealous for 'racial purity' as most lineages have admixture. My comments here are not intended to promote a racist, Aryan point of view. And for American blacks, I believe that one Genealogical DNA site for black ancestry warns American blacks not to be "disappointed" that they might find out that they have European DNA since about 30% of Y-DNA testers discover that their Y-DNA is European.
 
On the other hand, I'm not advocating admixture. I believe that we should be proud to carry on our tribal heritage and there is an advantage and blessing in doing so.
 
Just wanted to point those out, so that I'm not misunderstood in my motives behind my statements.

Esau and David were both described as "admoni" meaning reddish.
Some translations render this as "ruddy" meaning having a reddish complexion.
The simple and most accepted meaning however is that they both had red hair.

Tamika and Eugene seem not to have read or understood their bible other than to prove the perfidy of the British and American Empires down through the ages according to the promises given to Abraham. Come on guys, it's only for a little while in the scheme of things. Take it up with God next time you see him.

In response to those who say the Hebrews are black, more specifically, Israel.

First, let me make sure it is understood by virtue of how much the Israelites mixed with other nations, and details are given that King David and his son Solomon had many wives and concubines. Especially Solomon. So, that being said there are many who are indeed black who are of Israelite stock. However, to say without any scripture to back them up that ALL Israel is black is hysterical beyond belief. To quote one verse and use that to apply across the board that all of Israel is black is nonsense.

Also, let us reference a few other verses here:

Gen 28:3  And God Almighty bless thee, and make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, that thou mayest be a multitude of people;

the Gen 32:12  And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.

Gen 48:4  And said unto me, Behold, I will make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, and I will make of thee a multitude of people; and will give this land to thy seed after thee for an everlasting possession.

Gen 48:19  And his father refused, and said, I know it, my son, I know it: he also shall become a people, and he also shall be great: but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his seed shall become a multitude of nations.

Exo 12:38  And a mixed multitude went up also with them; and flocks, and herds, even very much cattle.

Deu 1:10  The LORD your God hath multiplied you, and, behold, ye are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude.

Multitude, multitude, multitude. Just the demographics and statistics alone of real world data, does not validate the black race of peoples as being a multitude. And, they did not go in and possess the land. I don't know what the racial statistics are for the land of Israel, but I'd be willing to bet the black population is not the majority there.

These are just a few verses that show what these two individuals are claiming is wrong.

YES, there are many of color who have Israelite blood in their veins, ...but they are not all black and it is not the majority either. I know a few of the tribe of Judah who are black and a few who are white, and white and black of Benjamin and black who are of Dan. And even famous celebrities of Judah who are both of black and white race.

And so, if these two individuals who claim this are really believing themselves to be Israel, then they should be leaving their Christian churches and getting into TORAH study doing away with the pagan practice of Xmas, Easter and all other pagan holidays and they should be keeping the proper Shabbats and the Appointed Times as shadowed in the Feasts.

 I forgot to add to the reply about only the black race being Israel....there are also many of Hispanic racial origin who are indeed of Israel. There are many social networking sites out there these days whose members are Torah keeping people who have come out of the Christian church system and are getting back to the things that are true in the scriptures. Doing away with all the pagan things. They are from all walks of life and all colors, thereby proving out what is said where we are a multitude of nations through Jacob's blessings to Joseph's sons.

(1) Slavery
It was prophesied [Deuteronomy 28:68] that if the Israelites sinned they would be punished by being sold into captivity.
The Israelites from the Ten Tribes were taken into captivity by the Assyrians. Some of those were used as slaves  by Assyria as illustrated
on Assyrian engravings.
The Jews of Judah after rebelling were taken into slavery by the Romans. They sold into Egypt, Italy, and elsewhere.
They fulfilled the Prophecy.

(2) Climatical Influence
The Israelites lived in the Middle East.
This area can be very hot. It includes types of climate ranging from almost Alpine in parts of Lebvanon and Turkey
to desert conditions. In Biblical times the climate was cooler. There was more tree cover and greenery. We can thank the Arabs
for changing that.
It may be that the Ancient Hebrews were mainly of Mediterranean type coloring but other types were also present as we have shown.
Environment does have an influence and after moving to colder (or warmer) areas one could expect physical modification.

(3) Pictures
We have an article showing pictures of ancient Israelites. These pictures are reliable.

(4) Braiding of Hair
I do not know whether or not the Bible mentions women braiding hair.
I have however noticed here and there females with braided locks.
It would seem that those of the opposite sex that have adopted this particular practice and caught my eye have been blond, red-hairs, brunettes, and jet black.
In other words of all colors.

Miriam was punished by being stricken with leprosy which made her  "white as snow" (Numbers 12:10) i.e. shining white.
Aaron asked Moses to implore the Almighty to heal her and said:
# LET HER NOT BE AS ONE DEAD, OF WHOM THE FLESH IS HALF CONSUMED WHEN HE COMETH OUT OF HIS MOTHER'S WOMB# [Numbers 12:12] .
You say that this proves that Mirian was a black person since black people are often born white but change their color shortly afterwards.
The verse refers to a foetus that is aborted in a state of partial formation. Leprosy would turn the skin shiny white and rot it away.
Most white people are not like that.

The Canaanites spoke a language similar to Hebrew. The natives of West Africa had traditions that both Israelites and Canaanites had settled amongst them.  The name once given to the area, "Ghana" (whence we have "Guinea") is an Egyptian pronunciation of Canaan.
(2. Concerning slavery and going back to Egypt in ships we have answered this question in our reply above to Tamika.
It is interesting that the following chapter in Deuteronomy speaks of Erets Acheret (Another Land of New World) which was an name given to North America.
[Deuteronomy 29:28] AND THE L-RD ROOTED THEM OUT OF THEIR LAND IN ANGER, AND IN WRATH, AND IN GREAT INDIGNATION, AND CAST THEM INTO ANOTHER LAND, AS IT IS THIS DAY.

It is interesting to note that many (possibly the numerical majority though this is not commonly admitted) of the early white settlers of North America  were indentured servants or convicted felons doing their time. Later immigrants from Ireland (and Scotland) were also brought there sometimes under almost slavery conditions. A similar situation existed in Australia at the beginning.

Cush represents Africa. Cush came from Ham. Cush is black and represents a reality distant from that of Israel.

Jeremiah 13: 23 Can the Ethiopian [Cushi] change his skin or the leopard its spots?
      Then may you also do good who are accustomed to do evil.

Amos 9: 7 "Are you not like the people of Ethiopia [KeBnei Cushiim] to Me,
