1. Health - a Diversionary Discussion. Exercise and Weight Loss.
Recently I suffered from a serious gout attack. This can be quite painful and disabling. It has not yet entirely gone away. In my case the attacks so far may be considered comparatively mild.
Based on past experience they are liable to recur over a time period of several weeks, or months, or even years. They may go away entirely. There are things that can be done that may reduce or eliminate them altogether. One of these is losing weight. I am slightly over-weight. Statistically if I lose weight I have less chance of suffering from gout.
Not only gout but a whole range of problems are connected with over-weight. A good portion of the population suffers from it. Women are more susceptible than men and have a harder problem of losing excess weight once they have acquired it.
In some cases weight problems can be exaggerated.
Women with a bit of fat on them are not necessarily unattractive. Physically they may function just as well or better.
Men may be drawn to and feel less intimidated by women who are a little overweight.
Overweight men may also be attractive to women. Fat can suggest prosperity and controllability. In case of sickness extra fat may enable speedier recoveries.
Fat in men can become strength in times of emergency.
In the Bible the word "shemen" meaning literally "fat" connoted strong men suitable for warfare.
The Biblical story of Ehud, a Judge of Israel, speaks of fat men amongst the Moabites.
Judges 3:
29 And at that time they killed about ten thousand men of Moab, all stout men of valor, not a man escaped.
The expression "all stout men of valor" in Hebrew is "col shemen ve-col ish chayil".
[Hebrew: col shemen, literally every fat man, ve-col ish chayil, literally every warrior, i.e. every fat man and every warrior, or
alternatively, "Every one a fat man and every one a warrior".
The word for fat men is here parallel and supplementary with the words for warrior.
Fat men were good in battle.
Contrary to the depictions of Hollywood, Roman gladiators had a special diet aimed to increase body fat and probably looked it.
On the other hand despite the possible military advantages of extra weight, it may have had adverse effects.
In the verse (Judges 3:29) quoted above All the fat men and warriors of Moab were killed.
Moab under King Eglon, had been oppressing Israel. "Now Eglon was a very fat man" (Judges 3:17).
Ehud from the Tribe of Benjamin assassinated Eglon by poking a hidden dagger in his fat belly. Ehud then lead the Israelites against Moab and killing 10,000 men, "every fat man and every warrior".
Perhaps if they had weighed less they would have been able to run faster, and get away?
Anyway, on the whole weight problems should be avoided.
The only real solution is correct diet.
Exercise can however help a lot.
Exercise helps take off some weight. This is especially so when supplemented by diet.
Exercise also helps tone up the body in general so that the adverse effects of extra weight are less potent.
Exercise improves posture, muscle tone, natural physical movement and physical co-ordination. Consequently the extra weight is less noticeable and less deleterious.
Exercise enhances metabolism, eases breathing, and releases tension.
Exercise also results in redistribution of body mass. Fat becomes muscle.
In my youth I found the popular 5BX exercise program of the Canadian Air Force very helpful.

The birthday date of Yair Davidiy in Hebrew is the 10th Tishrei i.e. Yom Kippur.
The secular date is 20th September. Yair is now 61.
We received a fairly large number of Brithday Greetings.

Sorry if I ask a question that was answered before, I only recently came across Brit Am?s website, and find it very interesting. I do believe that I am also part of the lost 10 tribes of Israel. I am not informed enough to explain why I think so, it is really more a feeling than a reality at this stage. I would very much like to understand better.
Do you maybe have an internet link to an earlier discussion concerning South Africa?
