I was pondering the similarity of the Anglo-Gaelic surname "Cowen" to the
Jewish surname "Cohen" and I came across this
"The second possibility is that Cohen is an Anglicized form of two Gaelic
Irish surnames - O Cadhain of Connacht, and O Comhdhain of Ulster."

The article also mentions a John Cohen who lived in London in 1649 (during
the reign of Charles 1, and thus before the readmittance of the Jews.
The same article also claims that not all Cohens are actually Kohens.
Confusing. Eh.

Shalom,
The word Cohen in Hebrew means priest or officiate. The descendants of Aharon
the brother of Moses became the Cohens.
The Cohens were Temple priests.
The Cohens were from the Tribe of Levi. The Levites received the first tithe of
produce. From this they had to give a tenth to the Cohens. In addition every
Israelites had to
give a part of his produce to the Cohens. No set amount is mentioned but about
2% was accepted.
Numbers 18:
25 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 26 Speak thus to the Levites, and say
to them: When you take from the children of Israel the tithes which I have given
you from them as your inheritance, then you shall offer up a heave offering of
it to the Lord, a tenth of the tithe. 27 And your heave offering shall be
reckoned to you as though it were the grain of the threshing floor and as the
fullness of the winepress. 28 Thus you shall also offer a heave offering to the
Lord from all your tithes which you receive from the children of Israel, and you
shall give the Lord's heave offering from it to Aaron the priest.
In addition the Cohens also received the first fruits, part of the sacrifices,
part of the sacrifices, firstborn animals, selected parts (Foreleg, Jaw, and
Stomach, Deuteronomy 18:3) of every animal that was slaughtered, etc.

Offerings to the Priest
In Second Temple times the Cohens kept strict watch over their genealogy.
Nevertheless with the breakdown of Temple authority many who were not descended
from Cohens claimed the title in order to benefit from the gifts and prestige of
the name.
In addition over the years many ordinary Jews received the name Cohen in all
kinds of ways.
Stories are told of Jewish immigrants arriving at Ellis Island in New York with
complicated foreign names.
Lazy officials in such cases are known on occasion to have simply wrote their
names down as Cohen!
Even in Israel such events occurred.
Most Jews however with the name Cohen are probably genuine descendants of Aharon.

Just one more thing: All 12 Tribes MUST be back in the Holy Land before the
return of Messiah. God is going to whistle to them when the time is ripe to
return. Do not be surprised when the ECONOMIC COLLAPSE in the UK, USA, AUZ, NZ
and other countries WORLDWIDE will be the trigger to get them out of the
countries to which they were scattered and back to the Holy Land. Do not be
surprised when God is behind the worldwide economic collapse as well! However,
do not be afraid, He knows exactly what He is doing and you are on HIS
side......which is the winning side, of course.
