Saving us at the last minute from Disaster! (ca. 9 minutes)
Talk includes points not mentioned in the text.

Psalm 124
A SONG OF DEGREES OF DAVID.
This Psalm speaks of the Almighty saving Israelites from their enemies when everything seemed to be against them.
There are aspects of this Psalm that each one of us may apply to our own private lives. Very often we may have come face to face with potential calamity and been saved by the Almighty.
The Psalm however speaks more on the national level.
It is pertinent to both Judah (the present-day Jews) and to  "Joseph" i.e. the Lost Ten Tribes nations. The application to Judah is the more obvious so that is what we will mainly speak of.

[Psalms 124:1] IF IT HAD NOT BEEN THE LORD WHO WAS ON OUR SIDE, NOW MAY ISRAEL SAY;

[Psalms 124:2] IF IT HAD NOT BEEN THE LORD WHO WAS ON OUR SIDE, WHEN MEN ROSE UP  AGAINST US:

[Psalms 124:3] THEN THEY HAD SWALLOWED US UP QUICK, WHEN THEIR WRATH WAS KINDLED  AGAINST US:
##HAD SWALLOWED US UP QUICK. The Midrash takes this as referring to the Ancient Israelites in Egypt who were encompassed by the Egyptians ands part of the Egyptian system. It was as if the Israelites had almost been swallowed up by the Egyptians.
So too, the Jews were foreigners in the lands of many Gentiles nations and always in danger of being swallwed up by them and of disappearing.
Israel and the Jews would have been wiped out several times over if God had not protected them.

[Psalms 124:4] THEN THE WATERS HAD OVERWHELMED US, THE STREAM HAD GONE OVER OUR SOUL:
When the Israelites came out of Egypt the Egyptians pursued them. The Sea opened up before them and the Israelites passed through the Sea to safety. The Egyptians chased after the Hebrews but the waters of the Sea returned to where they had previously been and drowned the Egyptians.  If God not helped us we may also have been drowned by the waters of the sea.
This is an historical event.
It is also symbolic.
Many times in our history and even in our personal lives disaster has threatened to overtake us but God has saved us at the last minute.

[Psalms 124:5] THEN THE PROUD WATERS HAD GONE OVER OUR SOUL.

[Psalms 124:6] BLESSED BE THE LORD, WHO HATH NOT GIVEN US AS A PREY TO THEIR TEETH.

[Psalms 124:7] OUR SOUL IS ESCAPED AS A BIRD OUT OF THE SNARE OF THE FOWLERS: THE SNARE IS BROKEN, AND WE ARE ESCAPED.
A bird is a very delicate creature, once snared it can easily by harmed. The Jews were in a similar situation in many cases but God helped them.

[Psalms 124:8] OUR HELP IS IN THE NAME OF THE LORD, WHO MADE HEAVEN AND EARTH.
