Chapters with Brit-Am Commentary

Summary of Individual Chapters:
Chapter 31: Those Israelites who go to Mitsrayim (Egypt?) for help and trust only in armed might and equipment are condemned. WE must seek God THE HOLY ONE OF ISRAEL. We must get back to our Israelite consciousness. God will fight for Zion and Jerusalem (31:4-5). God is a Zionist (31:1)! The day will come when everyone will renounce their idols (31:7). "Ashur" ( Assyria) will fall by the sword (31:8).

Chapter 32: There will come an era when things will change for the better and human nature will be improved (32:1-7). A generous person benefits himself as much as he gives to others (32:8). The females are called upon to repent and lament (32:9-12). Disaster will come down but after that the spirit of the Almighty will enter into us (32:13-15). Judgement, justice, and peace will come to Israel (32:16-18) along with material blessings (32:19-20).

Chapter 33: They who are treacherous are condemned (33:1). The chapter flits back and forth between promises of future deliverance and condemnations of the present. They who seek "peace" shall work in vain (33:7). The enemy will break the agreement and cause disaster (33:8). Sharon, Bashan, and Carmel will be desolate. These are areas of Ancient Israel but they could also represent modern Israelite entities. Bashan for instance could represent either Scandinavia or North America (33:9). In the end only the righteous of Zion will be saved (33:15-16). In some cases (according to Midrash Tanchuma see "Joseph. The Israelite Destiny of America") "Zion" can represent Joseph. God will save us (33:22). The people of Israel are likened unto a ship in a storm (33:23). God wants to forgive us and to bless us (33:24).

Chapter 34: All the peoples of the earth are called upon to listen and pay heed (34:1). God is angry with all the peoples but upon some more than others (34:2). There will be changes in the heavens as Isaiah has previously announced. Cosmic disturbances will parallel and influence the earthly ones. The heavens have astrological and physical influence on the earth but the Laws of Natural Causes they represent will be confounded and reversed. The heavens also represent the angelical hosts. There will be changes of spiritual nature above that will reflect themselves in the self-awareness of people below (34:4). Edom and Bozra (a major city of Edom) will be destroyed (34:5-6). God will take revenge for the persecutions of Zion meaning of the Jewish people (34:8). Everything is written. Everything will come to pass. A lot of things we will not understand until after they occur and even then only partially so (34:16).

Chapter 35: God will take vengeance on those who oppressed us. He will save His people (35:4). There will be a new spirit of understanding and instruction so that those who wish to return to God may do so without straying in errors or tiring out through weakness or discouragement: There will be a spirit of vigor and love to overcome inborn and acquired imperfections. This is a promise that those who set out on this spiritual journey will find their way clearly marked before them (35:8). The Exiled of Israel will return (35:10).

Samuel 31 to 35

Isaiah - Chapter 31
[Isaiah 31:1] WOE TO THEM THAT GO DOWN TO EGYPT FOR HELP; AND STAY ON HORSES, AND TRUST IN CHARIOTS, BECAUSE THEY ARE MANY; AND IN HORSEMEN, BECAUSE THEY ARE VERY STRONG; BUT THEY LOOK NOT UNTO THE HOLY ONE OF ISRAEL, NEITHER SEEK THE LORD!

 [Isaiah 31:2] YET HE ALSO IS WISE, AND WILL BRING EVIL, AND WILL NOT CALL BACK HIS WORDS: BUT WILL ARISE AGAINST THE HOUSE OF THE EVILDOERS, AND AGAINST THE HELP OF THEM THAT WORK INIQUITY.
"HE ALSO IS WISE": The counseloors of Judah thought themselves wisemen and that they could outwit the advise of God given through the Prophet. It will not work. The evildoers will bring evil on themselves and all those they were responsible for.

 [Isaiah 31:3] NOW THE EGYPTIANS ARE MEN, AND NOT GOD; AND THEIR HORSES FLESH, AND NOT SPIRIT. WHEN THE LORD SHALL STRETCH OUT HIS HAND, BOTH HE THAT HELPETH SHALL FALL, AND HE THAT IS HOLPEN SHALL FALL DOWN, AND THEY ALL SHALL FAIL TOGETHER.
Egypt is not God or a replacement for him. Up to now we had the impression that relying on Egypt was a mistake because Egypt could not be relied upon. We now realize that God does not want Egypt to be reliable and will actively intervene against Egypt.

 [Isaiah 31:4] FOR THUS HATH THE LORD SPOKEN UNTO ME, LIKE AS THE LION AND THE YOUNG LION ROARING ON HIS PREY, WHEN A MULTITUDE OF SHEPHERDS IS CALLED FORTH AGAINST HIM, HE WILL NOT BE AFRAID OF THEIR VOICE, NOR ABASE HIMSELF FOR THE NOISE OF THEM: SO SHALL THE LORD OF HOSTS COME DOWN TO FIGHT FOR MOUNT ZION, AND FOR THE HILL THEREOF.
God will put Egypt out of the picture but then intervene HIMSELF to show His glory.

 [Isaiah 31:5] AS BIRDS FLYING, SO WILL THE LORD OF HOSTS DEFEND JERUSALEM; DEFENDING ALSO HE WILL DELIVER  IT; AND PASSING OVER HE WILL PRESERVE IT.
Like birds (i.e. Magpies) hovering over their nest to protect it so too will God show His concern to protect Jerusalem. It will be clear to all.

 [Isaiah 31:6] TURN YE UNTO HIM FROM WHOM THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL HAVE DEEPLY REVOLTED.
All the Children of Israel are called upon to take heed and repent.

 [Isaiah 31:7] FOR IN THAT DAY EVERY MAN SHALL CAST AWAY HIS IDOLS OF SILVER, AND HIS IDOLS OF GOLD, WHICH YOUR OWN HANDS HAVE MADE UNTO YOU FOR A SIN.
Idols include actual images of worship and also all values that substitute for or impede upon Divine ones. Silver and gold and the works of our hands represent our businesses, careers, social positions, family commitments etc. All these things are good in themselves but we use them often as excuses not to behave as we should or not to dedicate ourselves sufficiently to the Almighty.

 [Isaiah 31:8] THEN SHALL THE ASSYRIAN FALL WITH THE SWORD, NOT OF A MIGHTY MAN; AND THE SWORD, NOT OF A MEAN MAN, SHALL DEVOUR HIM: BUT HE SHALL FLEE FROM THE SWORD, AND HIS YOUNG MEN SHALL BE DISCOMFITED.
"ASSYRIAN": Isaiah is basing his future prediction on an actual event occurring in his time. He uses this event as a prototype. Nevertheless it appears that the descendants of Assyria in the future will also be prominent amongst the enemies of Israel.

 [Isaiah 31:9] AND HE SHALL PASS OVER TO HIS STRONG HOLD FOR FEAR, AND HIS PRINCES SHALL BE AFRAID OF THE ENSIGN, SAITH THE LORD, WHOSE FIRE IS IN ZION, AND HIS FURNACE IN JERUSALEM.
The King of Assyria will fly away and his officers be perturbed.
 

Isaiah - Chapter 32
[Isaiah 32:1] BEHOLD, A KING SHALL REIGN IN RIGHTEOUSNESS, AND PRINCES SHALL RULE IN JUDGMENT.

 [Isaiah 32:2] AND A MAN SHALL BE AS AN HIDING PLACE FROM THE WIND, AND A COVERT FROM THE TEMPEST; AS RIVERS OF WATER IN A DRY PLACE, AS THE SHADOW OF A GREAT ROCK IN A WEARY LAND.      

 [Isaiah 32:3] AND THE EYES OF THEM THAT SEE SHALL NOT BE DIM, AND THE EARS OF THEM THAT HEAR SHALL HEARKEN.

 [Isaiah 32:4] THE HEART ALSO OF THE RASH SHALL UNDERSTAND KNOWLEDGE, AND THE TONGUE OF THE STAMMERERS SHALL BE READY TO SPEAK PLAINLY.
"THE RASH": Literally those who react quickly. People who do things without thinking lack understanding and the ability to learn.

 [Isaiah 32:5] THE VILE PERSON SHALL BE NO MORE CALLED LIBERAL, NOR THE CHURL SAID TO BE BOUNTIFUL.

 [Isaiah 32:6] FOR THE VILE PERSON WILL SPEAK VILLANY, AND HIS HEART WILL WORK INIQUITY, TO PRACTISE HYPOCRISY, AND TO UTTER ERROR AGAINST THE LORD, TO MAKE EMPTY THE SOUL OF THE HUNGRY, AND HE WILL CAUSE THE DRINK OF THE THIRSTY TO FAIL.     

 [Isaiah 32:7] THE INSTRUMENTS ALSO OF THE CHURL ARE EVIL: HE DEVISETH WICKED DEVICES TO DESTROY THE POOR WITH LYING WORDS, EVEN WHEN THE NEEDY SPEAKETH RIGHT.

 [Isaiah 32:8] BUT THE LIBERAL DEVISETH LIBERAL THINGS; AND BY LIBERAL THINGS SHALL HE STAND.
"LIBERAL" in Hebrew "Nadiv" means generous. Someone who gives to others readily of himself whether in the form of money, encouragement, friendship, etc., is in effect giving to himself. He gets it all back somehow or other many times over. 

 [Isaiah 32:9] RISE UP, YE WOMEN THAT ARE AT EASE; HEAR MY VOICE, YE CARELESS DAUGHTERS; GIVE EAR UNTO MY SPEECH.

 [Isaiah 32:10] MANY DAYS AND YEARS SHALL YE BE TROUBLED, YE CARELESS WOMEN: FOR THE VINTAGE SHALL FAIL, THE GATHERING SHALL NOT COME.

 [Isaiah 32:11] TREMBLE, YE WOMEN THAT ARE AT EASE; BE TROUBLED, YE CARELESS ONES: STRIP YOU, AND MAKE YOU BARE, AND GIRD SACKCLOTH UPON YOUR LOINS.

 [Isaiah 32:12] THEY SHALL LAMENT FOR THE TEATS, FOR THE PLEASANT FIELDS, FOR THE FRUITFUL VINE.
"LAMENT FOR THE TEATS": More correctly translated as "beat in mourning on their beasts". In Hebrew this verse relies on a play on words "shad" =breast, "sadeh"  = field. "sofed" = beat in mourning. Rhythm: "shad-sofed-sad". 

 [Isaiah 32:13] UPON THE LAND OF MY PEOPLE SHALL COME UP THORNS AND BRIERS; YEA, UPON ALL THE HOUSES OF JOY IN THE JOYOUS CITY:

 [Isaiah 32:14] BECAUSE THE PALACES SHALL BE FORSAKEN; THE MULTITUDE OF THE CITY SHALL BE LEFT; THE  FORTS AND TOWERS SHALL BE FOR DENS FOR EVER, A JOY OF WILD ASSES, A PASTURE OF FLOCKS;

 [Isaiah 32:15] UNTIL THE SPIRIT BE POURED UPON US FROM ON HIGH, AND THE WILDERNESS BE A FRUITFUL FIELD, AND THE FRUITFUL FIELD BE COUNTED FOR A FOREST.
The Spirit of God will be stirred up and poured upon us once more. Everything will change for the better. Even that little that was already good will be increased immeasurably.

 [Isaiah 32:16] THEN JUDGMENT SHALL DWELL IN THE WILDERNESS, AND RIGHTEOUSNESS REMAIN IN THE FRUITFUL FIELD.

 [Isaiah 32:17] AND THE WORK OF RIGHTEOUSNESS SHALL BE PEACE; AND THE EFFECT OF RIGHTEOUSNESS QUIETNESS AND ASSURANCE FOR EVER.

 [Isaiah 32:18] AND MY PEOPLE SHALL DWELL IN A PEACEABLE HABITATION, AND IN SURE DWELLINGS, AND IN QUIET RESTING PLACES;

 [Isaiah 32:19] WHEN IT SHALL HAIL, COMING DOWN ON THE FOREST; AND THE CITY SHALL BE LOW IN A LOW PLACE.

 [Isaiah 32:20] BLESSED ARE YE THAT SOW BESIDE ALL WATERS, THAT SEND FORTH THITHER THE FEET OF THE OX AND THE ASS.
There will be such a blessing that it will be possible to send the beasts out whither they wish. Even if they destroy something or get lost it will not be so bad and besides the blessing will be so plentiful that things will more or less take care of themselves.
 

Isaiah - Chapter 33

 [Isaiah 33:1] WOE TO THEE THAT SPOILEST, AND THOU WAST NOT SPOILED; AND DEALEST TREACHEROUSLY, AND THEY DEALT NOT TREACHEROUSLY WITH THEE! WHEN THOU SHALT CEASE TO SPOIL, THOU SHALT BE SPOILED; AND  WHEN THOU SHALT MAKE AN END TO DEAL TREACHEROUSLY, THEY SHALL DEAL TREACHEROUSLY WITH THEE.
As a person does so is done unto him. When disaster strikes us or even discomfort comes upon us we should examine our deeds and attitudes. Maybe there is something in  us that needs correction. This does not mean that we should disregard direct causes or ignore harmful elements. It is another aspect. In addition to doing what we have to or what we should to cope with life and avoid future unpleasantness to ourself and others we should also look for our own faults and try to correct them.

 [Isaiah 33:2] O LORD, BE GRACIOUS UNTO US; WE HAVE WAITED FOR THEE: BE THOU THEIR ARM EVERY MORNING, OUR SALVATION ALSO IN THE TIME OF TROUBLE.
Put strength in our arms to keep going with renewed strength and vigor. In time of trouble endow us with added energies and might to overcome adversity.
The people were in trouble, they therefore asked for strength and they received it.

 [Isaiah 33:3] AT THE NOISE OF THE TUMULT THE PEOPLE FLED; AT THE LIFTING UP OF THYSELF THE NATIONS WERE SCATTERED.
People make a lot of noise.  As soon as it is clear that the noise-makers are going to face disaster if they continue they usually fly away.  So would we.  "He who fights and runs away lives to fight another day".

The Prophet is moving back and forth. He is giving expression to a situation in its before-and-after sequences and back again. How it was, what happened, how it should have been, how we should be, how it was again.

 [Isaiah 33:4] AND YOUR SPOIL SHALL BE GATHERED LIKE THE GATHERING OF THE CATERPILLER: AS THE RUNNING TO AND FRO OF LOCUSTS SHALL HE RUN UPON THEM.
Explained like the visitation of locusts. Locusts and caterpillars of a certain type are "Kosher" and can be eaten. Today we do not eat them but in Ancient Times the Israelites used to. Swarms of locusts would come up, make a great humming noise (like the sound of  numerous motors and aircraft), and settle on the ground in great swarming hordes. The people would go out and simply gather them up to be eaten.
So too, the enemy will come up in horded masses of numbers, cover the face of the earth, make a great humming noise, and then flee away leaving all his equipment  and wealth to be gathered up by the Judaeans and Israelites.

 [Isaiah 33:5] THE LORD IS EXALTED; FOR HE DWELLETH ON HIGH: HE HATH FILLED ZION WITH JUDGMENT AND RIGHTEOUSNESS.
Amos Chacham ["Daat Mikra"] says this verse is understandeable at one and the same time in the following ways:
God does righteous judgement against enemies of Judah who came to fight against Zion..
Causes Judah and the Israelites to repent so that they do judgment and righteousness.
 Fills Zion with booty taken from the enemy. Even though the booty is taken from what belonged to the enemy the people of Zion have a just claim to take it as their own.

 [Isaiah 33:6] AND WISDOM AND KNOWLEDGE SHALL BE THE STABILITY OF THY TIMES, AND STRENGTH OF SALVATION: THE FEAR OF THE LORD IS HIS TREASURE.
"WISDOM AND KNOWLEDGE": Each generation has its own peculiarities. In the past there were times were emotion or "spirituality" held the key. In our time we need knowledge, intellectual appreciation, facts.  This is the pathway in our time to lead Israel back to repentance and belief. The height of religious acheivement however is beyond acknowledgement and concerns the FEAR OF THE LORD. 

 [Isaiah 33:7] BEHOLD, THEIR VALIANT ONES SHALL CRY WITHOUT: THE AMBASSADORS OF PEACE SHALL WEEP BITTERLY.
The Prophet appears to have switched back in time to the stages that preceded the salvation described above. Our ambassadors were going out and begging for terms of surrender. The terms offered were so heartless and cruel that the emissaries broke down weeping bitterly.

 [Isaiah 33:8] THE HIGHWAYS LIE WASTE, THE WAYFARING MAN CEASETH: HE HATH BROKEN THE COVENANT, HE  HATH DESPISED THE CITIES, HE REGARDETH NO MAN.
"HE HATH BROKEN THE COVENANT": The enemy does not keep his agreement. How can one expect him to? Like a wild dog before a freshly-wounded pigeon how can one expect the beast to restrain himself?

 [Isaiah 33:9] THE EARTH MOURNETH AND LANGUISHETH: LEBANON IS ASHAMED AND HEWN DOWN: SHARON IS LIKE A WILDERNESS; AND BASHAN AND CARMEL SHAKE OFF THEIR FRUITS.
These are all places in Israel according to the Bible.
Lebanon - mountainous, good for grapes, etc and milk products. The names Albion applied to England and Alban for Scotland derive from the name Lebanon.
SHARON - a fertile plain on the coast. Good for orchards and field produce.
Bashan- east of the Jordan: Prairylike. Still good for cattle and sheep grazing. Once quite productive now somewhat arid due to Arab ecological practices.
Carmel - a fertile field, English countryside type country.

 [Isaiah 33:10] NOW WILL I RISE, SAITH THE LORD; NOW WILL I BE EXALTED; NOW WILL I LIFT UP MYSELF.
God will reveal His might.

 [Isaiah 33:11] YE SHALL CONCEIVE CHAFF, YE SHALL BRING FORTH STUBBLE: YOUR BREATH, AS FIRE, SHALL DEVOUR YOU.
He is talking to the enemy. The fiery breath (specialised weaponry) that you brought to use against Zion will backfire and destroy you.

[Isaiah 33:12] AND THE PEOPLE SHALL BE AS THE BURNINGS OF LIME: AS THORNS CUT UP SHALL THEY BE BURNED IN THE FIRE.
Jews were gassed and their bodies burned. Babies that suckled their mother's breast and thus were somehow saved from the gassing were hurled alive into the furnaces. Someitmes babies were plucked from their mother's breast and killed before the eyes of the mothers
The Arabs would do the same if they could.
What was done to us will God do to the enemy.

 [Isaiah 33:13] HEAR, YE THAT ARE FAR OFF, WHAT I HAVE DONE; AND, YE THAT ARE NEAR, ACKNOWLEDGE MY MIGHT.
People all over the world will see what has happened and begin to repent.
In the First Gulf War [over Kuwait] we had a glimpse of how God can protect us:
About 30 Scud missiles were sent against Israel. When whole streets of houses were destroyed  all the inhabitants were in the street; when half a house was obliterated the entire family were sitting in the half that escaped; when the major gas depot of all Tel Aviv received a direct hit all the gas had been removed very shortly beforehand due to the detection of an unexplained leakage, etc. Thousands of miracles were recorded. It is true that one person was killed from a direct hit and about a hundred died due to heart attacks, asphyxiation due to not putting the gas masks on correctly etc.  A chain of Chemist shops received direct hits on three different occasions. This chain had insisted on opening its shops on the SABBATH even though most shops in Israel close on that day.
On the whole we saw that God was with us even though we may not have deserved it.  I was in Israel at the time I remember the whole country reading the Psalms and remaining quite calm throughout the whole affair.
The USA and Britain lead the War. British pilots were outstandingly brave. They fought for their own interests but later claimed to have been fighting on behalf of  the State of Israel.  In a sense they were.
The fact that this claim was made (by the then President Bush, that they were fighting on behalf of the State of Israel) was in itself significant. It was not strictly true but to my way of thinking reflected a subconcious acknowledgement of what should be.

Incidentally the State of Israel had contingency plans to take Sadam out. Israel however was requested not to participate. After the War Israel received a "payment" in the form of nuclear submarines from Germany and other goodies for not having taken part.

I heard on the news this morning that a wedding hall in Jerusalem collapsed. Perhaps more than 20 people have been killed and hundreds injured. This is without a war.

An over-crowded wedding reception hall collapsed Thursday night in Jerusalem, killing at least 25 people and injuring 250.

More people are killed or injured in Israel through traffic accidents on the Sabbath Day (when driving for Jews should be forbidden) that all the wars of Israel. 

 [Isaiah 33:14] THE SINNERS IN ZION ARE AFRAID; FEARFULNESS HATH SURPRISED THE HYPOCRITES. WHO AMONG US SHALL DWELL WITH THE DEVOURING FIRE? WHO AMONG US SHALL DWELL WITH EVERLASTING BURNINGS?
"THE SINNERS IN ZION ARE AFRAID" ": Who would not be?
To be a dead hero for a good cause may be one thing, but for bad things you never really enjoyed and did not really want anyway?

 [Isaiah 33:15] HE THAT WALKETH RIGHTEOUSLY, AND SPEAKETH UPRIGHTLY; HE THAT DESPISETH THE GAIN OF OPPRESSIONS, THAT SHAKETH HIS HANDS FROM HOLDING OF BRIBES, THAT STOPPETH HIS EARS FROM HEARING OF BLOOD, AND SHUTTETH HIS EYES FROM SEEING EVIL;
This describes someone who takes bribes. He may not have started out that way. Often a person sins a little here, a little there, and then finds himself in a quagmire he cannot get out of but which seems to drag him deeper and deeper to depths he would never have dreamt of descending to.  e.g. A policeman who takes a minor bribe to overlook something he might not have been able to do anything about anyway suddenly finds himself forced to look away from things he would once have given his life to prevent. This is an extreme case but in little ways we all are faced with the temptation to make similar compromises that entrap us.
If each one of us does the best he can in his own particular field he also strengthens others and vice versa. People subconsciously communicate with each other. Strengthen one another, encourage, or the opposite.  One can generate an enormous amount of good without realizing it with just a little effort.

 [Isaiah 33:16] HE SHALL DWELL ON HIGH: HIS PLACE OF DEFENCE SHALL BE THE MUNITIONS OF ROCKS: BREAD SHALL BE GIVEN HIM; HIS WATERS SHALL BE SURE.
Someone who is righteous and does not take bribes but does what he should will be looked after by God.

 [Isaiah 33:17] THINE EYES SHALL SEE THE KING IN HIS BEAUTY: THEY SHALL BEHOLD THE LAND THAT IS VERY FAR OFF.
The righteous shall return to Zion and see the land. They shall see the Messiah.

[Isaiah 33:18] THINE HEART SHALL MEDITATE TERROR. WHERE IS THE SCRIBE? WHERE IS THE RECEIVER? WHERE IS HE THAT COUNTED THE TOWERS?
Things one would not have imagined. Indescribable in their glory will be revealed to us.

 [Isaiah 33:19] THOU SHALT NOT SEE A FIERCE PEOPLE, A PEOPLE OF A DEEPER SPEECH THAN THOU CANST PERCEIVE; OF A STAMMERING TONGUE, THAT THOU CANST NOT UNDERSTAND.
The foreigner who came against us, who spoke a language we did not understand will have disappeared.

 [Isaiah 33:20] LOOK UPON ZION, THE CITY OF OUR SOLEMNITIES: THINE EYES SHALL SEE JERUSALEM A QUIET HABITATION, A TABERNACLE THAT SHALL NOT BE TAKEN DOWN; NOT ONE OF THE STAKES THEREOF SHALL EVER BE REMOVED, NEITHER SHALL ANY OF THE CORDS THEREOF BE BROKEN.

 [Isaiah 33:21] BUT THERE THE GLORIOUS LORD WILL BE UNTO US A PLACE OF BROAD RIVERS AND STREAMS; WHEREIN SHALL GO NO GALLEY WITH OARS, NEITHER SHALL GALLANT SHIP PASS THEREBY.  
Perhaps Isaiah is hinting at the Messianic Era when according to Ezekiel (ch. 47) a river will flow out from under the Temple Mount and go down to the Dead Sea which will be healed and full of fish.
 [Isaiah 33:22] FOR THE LORD IS OUR JUDGE, THE LORD IS OUR LAWGIVER, THE LORD IS OUR KING; HE WILL SAVE US.
God will help us allways.

 [Isaiah 33:23] THY TACKLINGS ARE LOOSED; THEY COULD NOT WELL STRENGTHEN THEIR MAST, THEY COULD NOT SPREAD THE SAIL: THEN IS THE PREY OF A GREAT SPOIL DIVIDED; THE LAME TAKE THE PREY.

 [Isaiah 33:24] AND THE INHABITANT SHALL NOT SAY, I AM SICK: THE PEOPLE THAT DWELL THEREIN SHALL BE FORGIVEN THEIR INIQUITY.
The bottom line is that God wants to forgive us and to bless us.
 

Isaiah - Chapter 34
[Isaiah 34:1] COME NEAR, YE NATIONS, TO HEAR; AND HEARKEN, YE PEOPLE: LET THE EARTH HEAR, AND ALL THAT IS THEREIN; THE WORLD, AND ALL THINGS THAT COME FORTH OF IT.
All the peoples of the earth are called upon to listen and pay heed.

 [Isaiah 34:2] FOR THE INDIGNATION OF THE LORD IS UPON ALL NATIONS, AND HIS FURY UPON ALL THEIR ARMIES: HE HATH UTTERLY DESTROYED THEM, HE HATH DELIVERED THEM TO THE SLAUGHTER.   
God is angry with all the peoples but upon some more than others.

 [Isaiah 34:3] THEIR SLAIN ALSO SHALL BE CAST OUT, AND THEIR STINK SHALL COME UP OUT OF THEIR CARCASES, AND THE MOUNTAINS SHALL BE MELTED WITH THEIR BLOOD.

 [Isaiah 34:4] AND ALL THE HOST OF HEAVEN SHALL BE DISSOLVED, AND THE HEAVENS SHALL BE ROLLED TOGETHER AS A SCROLL: AND ALL THEIR HOST SHALL FALL DOWN, AS THE LEAF FALLETH OFF FROM THE VINE, AND AS A FALLING FIG FROM THE FIG TREE.
This verse has manifold interpreations all of which are pertinent:
There will be changes in the heavens as Isaiah has previously announced. Cosmic disturbances will parallel and influence the earthly ones.
The heavens have astrological and physical influence on the earth but the Laws of Natural Causes they represent will be confounded and reversed.
The heavens also represent the angelical hosts. There will be changes of spiritual nature above that will reflect themselves in the self-awareness of people below.

 [Isaiah 34:5] FOR MY SWORD SHALL BE BATHED IN HEAVEN: BEHOLD, IT SHALL COME DOWN UPON IDUMEA, AND UPON THE PEOPLE OF MY CURSE, TO JUDGMENT.
Idumea = Edom.

 [Isaiah 34:6] THE SWORD OF THE LORD IS FILLED WITH BLOOD, IT IS MADE FAT WITH FATNESS, AND WITH THE BLOOD OF LAMBS AND GOATS, WITH THE FAT OF THE KIDNEYS OF RAMS: FOR THE LORD HATH A SACRIFICE IN BOZRAH, AND A GREAT SLAUGHTER IN THE LAND OF IDUMEA.
Bozra was a major city of Edom.  In Jewish tradition Bozra was once identified with Byzantium (Constantinople) due to a similarity of name and the world task once fulfilled by Byzantium that controlled the eastern section of the Roman  Empire.

 [Isaiah 34:7] AND THE UNICORNS SHALL COME DOWN WITH THEM, AND THE BULLOCKS WITH THE BULLS; AND THEIR LAND SHALL BE SOAKED WITH BLOOD, AND THEIR DUST MADE FAT WITH FATNESS. 
The great warriors who were invincible will be slaughtered like bulls takemn to a slaughtering house.

 [Isaiah 34:8] FOR IT IS THE DAY OF THE LORD'S VENGEANCE, AND THE YEAR OF RECOMPENCES FOR THE CONTROVERSY OF ZION.
God will take revenge for the persecutions  of  "Zion" meaning of the Jewish people.

 [Isaiah 34:9] AND THE STREAMS THEREOF SHALL BE TURNED INTO PITCH, AND THE DUST THEREOF INTO BRIMSTONE, AND THE LAND THEREOF SHALL BECOME BURNING PITCH.
This can have a naturalistic explanation or it could reflect some outcome of nuclear related disaster.

 [Isaiah 34:10] IT SHALL NOT BE QUENCHED NIGHT NOR DAY; THE SMOKE THEREOF SHALL GO UP FOR EVER: FROM   GENERATION TO GENERATION IT SHALL LIE WASTE; NONE SHALL PASS THROUGH IT FOR EVER AND EVER.

 [Isaiah 34:11] BUT THE CORMORANT AND THE BITTERN SHALL POSSESS IT; THE OWL ALSO AND THE RAVEN SHALL DWELL IN IT: AND HE SHALL STRETCH OUT UPON IT THE LINE OF CONFUSION, AND THE STONES OF EMPTINESS.

 [Isaiah 34:12] THEY SHALL CALL THE NOBLES THEREOF TO THE KINGDOM, BUT NONE SHALL BE THERE, AND ALL HER PRINCES SHALL BE NOTHING.
It will be like a kingdom of ghosts and emptiness.

 [Isaiah 34:13] AND THORNS SHALL COME UP IN HER PALACES, NETTLES AND BRAMBLES IN THE FORTRESSES THEREOF: AND IT SHALL BE  AN HABITATION OF DRAGONS, AND A COURT FOR OWLS.                  
   The word translated as "DRAGONS" is "tanim" in Hebrew usually taken to mean jackals or hyenas.

 [Isaiah 34:14] THE WILD BEASTS OF THE DESERT SHALL ALSO MEET WITH THE WILD BEASTS OF THE ISLAND, AND THE SATYR SHALL CRY TO HIS FELLOW; THE SCREECH OWL ALSO SHALL REST THERE, AND FIND FOR HERSELF A PLACE OF REST.
DESERT is "Midbar" also meaning wilderness.
"THE WILD-BEASTS-OF-THE-ISLAND" in Hebrew this phrase is all one word "Ee-im". This word can mean "Islands" but Amos Chocham (Daat Mikra) says that in this case  it means "wild cats".
"THE SATYR" in Hebrew is "Sair" literally "hairy one". The word can denote a wild goat or a demon.

 [Isaiah 34:15] THERE SHALL THE GREAT OWL MAKE HER NEST, AND LAY, AND HATCH, AND GATHER UNDER HER SHADOW: THERE SHALL THE VULTURES ALSO BE GATHERED, EVERY ONE WITH HER MATE.         

 [Isaiah 34:16] SEEK YE OUT OF THE BOOK OF THE LORD, AND READ: NO ONE OF THESE SHALL FAIL, NONE SHALL WANT HER MATE: FOR MY MOUTH IT HATH COMMANDED, AND HIS SPIRIT IT HATH GATHERED THEM.
Everything is written. Everything will come to pass.  A lot of things we will not understand until after they occur and even then only partially so.

 [Isaiah 34:17] AND HE HATH CAST THE LOT FOR THEM, AND HIS HAND HATH DIVIDED IT UNTO THEM BY LINE:  THEY SHALL POSSESS IT FOR EVER, FROM GENERATION TO GENERATION SHALL THEY DWELL THEREIN.
Wild beasts, ghosts, demons, but no people: The effects of nuclear disaster could leave vast sections of the earth uninhabitable for a long time and in some cases for ever.

Isaiah - Chapter 35
[Isaiah 35:1] THE WILDERNESS AND THE SOLITARY PLACE SHALL BE GLAD FOR THEM; AND THE DESERT SHALL REJOICE, AND BLOSSOM AS THE ROSE.

 [Isaiah 35:2] IT SHALL BLOSSOM ABUNDANTLY, AND REJOICE EVEN WITH JOY AND SINGING: THE GLORY OF  LEBANON SHALL BE GIVEN UNTO IT, THE EXCELLENCY OF CARMEL AND SHARON, THEY SHALL SEE THE GLORY OF THE LORD, AND THE EXCELLENCY OF OUR GOD.       

 [Isaiah 35:3] STRENGTHEN YE THE WEAK HANDS, AND CONFIRM THE FEEBLE KNEES.
This is speaking to the Israelites in Exile who will be returning.

 [Isaiah 35:4] SAY TO THEM THAT ARE OF A FEARFUL HEART, BE STRONG, FEAR NOT: BEHOLD, YOUR GOD WILL COME WITH VENGEANCE, EVEN GOD WITH A RECOMPENCE; HE WILL COME AND SAVE YOU.
God will tke vengeance on those who oppressed us. He will save His people.

 [Isaiah 35:5] THEN THE EYES OF THE BLIND SHALL BE OPENED, AND THE EARS OF THE DEAF SHALL BE UNSTOPPED.

 [Isaiah 35:6] THEN SHALL THE LAME MAN LEAP AS AN HART, AND THE TONGUE OF THE DUMB SING: FOR IN THE WILDERNESS SHALL WATERS BREAK OUT, AND STREAMS  IN THE DESERT.

 [Isaiah 35:7] AND THE PARCHED GROUND SHALL BECOME A POOL, AND THE THIRSTY LAND SPRINGS OF WATER: IN THE HABITATION OF DRAGONS, WHERE EACH LAY, SHALL BE GRASS WITH REEDS AND RUSHES.

 [Isaiah 35:8] AND AN HIGHWAY SHALL BE THERE, AND A WAY, AND IT SHALL BE CALLED THE WAY OF HOLINESS;  THE UNCLEAN SHALL NOT PASS OVER IT; BUT IT SHALL BE FOR THOSE: THE WAYFARING MEN, THOUGH FOOLS, SHALL NOT ERR THEREIN.
This could be understood both in a physical and a spiritual sense. There really will be an actual roadway as described. There will also be a new spirit of understanding and instruction so that those who wish to return to God may do so without straying in errors or tiring out through weakness or discouragement: A spirit of vigor and love that overcomes inbuilt and acquired  imperfections. This is a promise that those who set out on this spiritual journey will find their way clearly marked before them.

 [Isaiah 35:9] NO LION SHALL BE THERE, NOR ANY RAVENOUS BEAST SHALL GO UP THEREON, IT SHALL NOT BE FOUND THERE; BUT THE REDEEMED SHALL WALK THERE:

 [Isaiah 35:10] AND THE RANSOMED OF THE LORD SHALL RETURN, AND COME TO ZION WITH SONGS AND EVERLASTING JOY UPON THEIR HEADS: THEY SHALL OBTAIN JOY AND GLADNESS, AND SORROW AND SIGHING SHALL FLEE AWAY.
Isaiah was speaking on several planes all at once.
At his own level he was referring to Israel and Judah, especially Judah. The Ten Tribes had been taken away in his lifetime. A good portion of Judah was about to join the Ten Tribes in Assyrian Captivity. Sennacherib was then to beseige Jerusalem but Jerusalem was to be miraculously delivered as described in the following chapters.  Then (after a few generations) Babylon was to take the remnant of Judah into captivity. Later Cyrus the Persian would enable the Jews of Judah to return. Edom became several different nations and separate ethnic entities. On the one hand Edom was a small country to the south of Judah that had underground reserviors of petroleum and bitumen that could be set alight. Edom was also a separate entity in the north in Urartu bordering Assyria. In addition, elements from Edom were prominent in Babylon. Edom, Assyria, and Babylon, and even Tyre (where there was another settlement of Edom) are sometimes referred to interchangeably.
Isaiah dressed his Prophecies in terms pertinent to his own times but the main import is to future generations especially the End Time.
Edom was to become a mighty entity:
Edom is Esau:

[GENESIS 27:38] AND ESAU SAID UNTO HIS FATHER, HAST THOU BUT ONE BLESSING, MY FATHER"  BLESS ME, EVEN ME ALSO, O MY FATHER. AND ESAU LIFTED UP HIS VOICE, AND WEPT. 
Esau has emotional grievance against Jacob.                   

[GENESIS 27:39] AND ISAAC HIS FATHER ANSWERED AND SAID UNTO HIM, BEHOLD, THY DWELLING  SHALL BE THE FATNESS OF THE EARTH, AND OF THE DEW OF HEAVEN FROM ABOVE;
rich land, well-watered: Amongst the best land available.  Mineral and natural resources. Richness.                   

[GENESIS 27:40] AND BY THY SWORD SHALT THOU LIVE, AND SHALT SERVE THY BROTHER; AND IT SHALL  COME TO PASS WHEN THOU SHALT HAVE THE DOMINION, THAT THOU SHALT BREAK HIS YOKE FROM OFF  THY NECK. 
A warrior people existing by the sword, preferring the sword to other means whenever the yoke of his brother is not upon him. 
A lot of us have weaknesses.  We may not be pround of them. We may try to deny them. If we wish we can overcome them. God helps those who ask for HIS assistance.
Even so, we often do not really want help. In the dark recesses of our existence we cutivate our weakness.
A glass of vodka before an alcoholic.
A cigarette before a chain smoker.
Temptation before a committed sinner. 
A  piece of flesh before a starving dog.
Lord Fisher was Head of the Admiralty before the First World War. In 1908 he said that War with Germany would break out in 1914.  He based his assumption on the Ship-building program of Germany at that time. He also said which month  the War would begin but he was a month late in his estimate.  At that time Germany was not hostile towards Britain. On the contrary.  It was just that even the smell of potential success in conflict would be too hard to overcome.               

[GENESIS 27:41] AND ESAU HATED JACOB BECAUSE OF THE BLESSING WHEREWITH HIS FATHER  BLESSED HIM: AND ESAU SAID IN HIS HEART, THE DAYS OF MOURNING FOR MY FATHER ARE AT HAND; THEN WILL I SLAY MY BROTHER JACOB. 
Esau hated Jacob and always does.
According to tradition descendants of Esau  went to Rome and Germany. They were especially prominent amongst the aristocracy of  Europe. The so-called "Germanic" nations were a mixture of Israelites, Edomites, Canaanites, descendants of Japhet and others.
It appears that in Biblical terms there no real "mixtures":
One is or one is not.
The Lost Tribes of Israel are in the West.
Ishmael is the Arabs and Islam.
Edom is Europe.
According to many Biblical passages Edom it appears will be completely destroyed BUT Rabbinical tradition says that in the End Times (after suffering punishment) a portion of Edom and of Ishmael will repent.
