Subject: Post-Bali #3
Dear friends:
This comes after two earlier notes
to you and other ex-Aussies this week,
touching on reactions to Australia's
first close encounter with the
horrible face of ideological terrorism.
Several of you have sent me messages
to say you have written to the
Australian press. If these have appeared,
please let know so I can share
the results around. I know that there
have also been some effective
efforts at tapping into Israeli officialdom,
with some good results from
that too.
As I wrote to you on Monday, an Australian
paper (in fact, the Herald-Sun
in Melbourne) contacted me that day
and requested that I write an open
letter addressed to the families of
the Bali victims. In responding, it
ended up being an opportunity for me
to give expression to some emotions
that are not easily communicated. I
was concerned that the editors might
feel this was not for their audience.
But they have come back this
morning saying it's slotted for publication
in Monday's paper. Noting's
certain, of course, and it might not
appear then or at all.
Finally, I would be glad to hear back
from people who are interested in
organizing some form of memorial to
the Australian (and the
non-Australian) dead of the Bali massacre
here in Israel. Some ideas are
circulating about the best way to do
this. Nothing's decided yet. One
possibility is to arrange something
brief but with a public profile on or
near the shloshim date. Please let
know if you are willing to take a role
in this.
Shabbat shalom,
Arnold.

A Letter to the Families of the Kuta
Beach Victims
By Arnold Roth, Jerusalem
I never felt more like a father than
when taking the hand of my little
daughter Malki and crossing the street
with her. There is something so
right and solid about being your child's
protector.
I never felt more wretched, frightened
and alone than on the night the
call came saying her body had been
identified. My daughter was murdered
by a deliberate act of explosive horror.
I was not there to protect her.
Grieving for your murdered loved one
will be the most intensely lonely
and personal thing you ever do. No
one else can feel the depth of pain
inside you. Friends and family will
want to share the burden, to wrap
their love and support around you,
to lighten the load by their sincere
care and concern. But the ache remains,
along with the feelings of guilt.
The cold truth will never change: an
innocent life was deliberately and
violently erased - and the monsters
that did it are delighted with the
work of their hands.
I wish I could pass along some wisdom
that might help you through this
awful time. I can't. The best I can
do is share some thoughts. The
massacre at Kuta Beach is too raw,
too huge, for anyone to fully
comprehend. Time will help you to put
it into a context, but you should
not expect the answers to come easily...
or ever.
Time plays a key role in Jewish mourning
observances. Some practices are
specific to the first seven days. Others
are designated for the first
thirty days. And in the specific case
of the death of a parent, Judaism
prescribes a full year of mourning.
This seems strange. A parent's
passing, no matter what the circumstances,
is always hard. Isn't the
death of a life-partner or a child
harder? But that's the point: a year
after a parent dies, you can expect
that life starts getting back to
normal. But there's no normal life
after burying a child or a spouse.
It's a certainty you are thinking about
the people who did this. You may
be imagining them getting out of bed
that day, praying to their god,
loading their equipment and driving
their lethal load to a site of
pleasure and enjoyment - their minds
focused on a lust for the
destruction and death of others. Like
me, you may feel this was
barbarism: cold-blooded, primal, bestial
- an act of pure hatred.
But get ready for the cold, clinical
analysis of others. For them, the
terrorists are "militants". The hatred
is "desperation". The pointless
destruction of life is "strategic".
An Australian journalist requested an
interview with me in Jerusalem days
after Malki was murdered last year.
When I agreed, he told me it would
make sense for his audience only if he
could combine it with an interview
of the suicide-murderer's father. He
said there were two sides to the story
and the opinions of the bomber's
family were a "counterpoint". I was
dumbfounded. His professional
standards demanded, he said, that the
interview could not take place
under any other conditions. So it never
took place.
Some people see life as if through
a TV screen. For them, your private
loss can only be understood as part
of a political drama. Point and
counterpoint. But no one should tell
you how to mourn, how to grieve.
There is no standard - no over-mourning,
no under-mourning. No one can
tell you how it feels or how it ought
to feel.
If you're asking what can be done,
I want to offer this. When a young
life ends, a huge empty space is left
behind. How do you fill it? With
hatred, thoughts of revenge, evening
up the score? After our daughter's
death, we sat down as a family and
asked ourselves how her life and
actions should be remembered. We decided
to raise money and give
practical help to families raising
a child with disabilities. Malki, a
very practical teenager, did this herself
and believed in it. It would
have made her smile.
Perhaps it's not politically correct
to say this, but I believe evil does
exist in the world - a great deal of
it. How do you answer evil? For us,
the right response has been to do things
which we hope will increase the
stock of good in the world. We know
this will have no impact on the
barbarians who killed our children
and loved ones. But we're absolutely
determined that they won't be impacting
us any more than they already
have. They and their values are irrelevant
to our lives.

2. Moslem Plans for Australia
From: surfer1 <surfer1@tpg.com.au>
Subject: [origin of nations] Jemaah
Islamiah (JI) plans to create an Asian
Islamic superstate, including northern
Australia
Report lifts lid on JI's plans for Australia
The ABC's Four Corners program has
obtained a secret intelligence report
which claims Jemaah Islamiah (JI) plans
to create an Asian Islamic
superstate, including northern Australia.
The program's investigation also uncovers
evidence of alleged Muslim
extremist leaders Hambali and Abu Bakar
Bashir's roles as the architects of
a campaign of terror in South-East
Asia over the past three years.
Four Corners reporter Sally Neighbour
travelled to Singapore, Malaysia, the
Philippines and Indonesia investigating
links between South-East Asia and
Osama bin Laden's terrorist network,
Al Qaeda.
The program says Al Qaeda chose the
Philippines as its first first home in
South-East Asia as early as 1998, when
Osama bin Laden sent his brother
there to gather support.
The Philippines' national security
adviser, Roilo Golez, has told Four
Corners his intelligence indicates
Australia is part of Al Qaeda's plan for
a wider Asian Islamic state.
"Jemaah Islamiah's vision of a pan-Islamic
state includes parts of northern
Australia, Mr Golez said.
Four Corners has also been told by
Philippines police chief Colonel Rodolfo
Mendoza that more attacks from terrorist
groups can be expected.
The Four Corners program will screen
on ABC TV tonight at 8:30. From 9:30pm
(AEDT), you can join Sally Neighbour
and special guests for a live online

discussion of the
issues raised in the program.
Terror listing
The revelations come after the Australian
Government formally listed JI as a
terrorist group under its new counter-terrorism
legislation.
The group is suspected of involvement
in the Bali bombings.
Under the legislation, the Government
must wait until a group is recognised
as a terrorist organisation by the
United Nations before it can act.
The United Nations Security Council
decided to list Jemaah Islamiah as a
terrorist organisation on Friday.
The Federal Government says the move
will strengthen Australia's ability to
prosecute anyone with active or financial
links to JI.
Australian-based members of the group
now face up to 25 years in jail.
Attorney-General Darryl Williams says
it is now an offence to belong to,
recruit for, train with, receive funds
from or make funds available to the
group.
3. Ephraim versus Mohamed: A "Brit-Am"
First
Australia is part of Ephraim.
In our book "Ephraim" (1st edition
1995) and in our commentary on Hosea we
published the following message:
(Extracts):
<<A psychopathic vision seeing Arab named Mohamed (550-632 CE)
decided that he had received a prophetic
revelation superseding all others.
He proceeded to persuade his fellow
countrymen to believe in him. Wars were
fought against non-believers. Peace
was made with the major Tribe of Jews
and at an opportune moment the Treaty
was broken, the Jewish males were
killed and their women taken. The breaking
of the treaty was without
provocation. Moslem theologians justify
the treachery and view it as
conduct to be emulated by true believers.
The Arabian Jews had been
treacherously exterminated at Mohammed's
direction...
<<Regarding the future, some type
of ill-fated bond between Ephraim and the
followers of Islam is spoken of in
the Biblical Book of Hosea. It is
obvious that the same Biblical Prophecies
may legitimately often be
understood in several entirely different
ways - as they were perhaps
intended to be. The verses should be
seen in their context. The overall
message is that the Prophet Hosea condemns
Ephraim, uses a word which may
be understood to be a form of the name
"Mohammed", speaks of the region of
Egypt and the east, and predicts a
disaster which somehow involves a mad
prophet also identified traditionally
as "Mohammed": The quotations are
from Hosea chapter nine:
...
"THEY WILL NOT DWELL IN THE LAND OF THE LORD, EPHRAIM SHALL RETURN
TO MITSRAYIM (EGYPT) AND EAT UNSANCTIFIED
BROTH IN ASSYRIA (9;3).
"FOR BEHOLD THEY ARE GONE DUE TO LOOTING EGYPT [Mitsrayim], MOPH
[Memphis] GATHERS THEM, MACHMAD [i.e.
Mahomad* k] BURIES THEM, THEIR SILVER
ENSNARED, THE THORN IN THEIR TENTS
[tabernacles] INHERITS THEM (9;6).
"THE DAYS OF VISITATION HAVE ARRIVED, THE DAYS OF PAYMENT HAVE
COME, ISRAEL SHALL KNOW, THE PROPHET
IS EVIL, MAD*l [Hebrew: "Meshuga"] A
MAN OF SPIRIT BECAUSE OF YOUR TRANSGRESSION
AND OF GREAT HATRED (9;7):
"EPHRAIM LOOKED OUT WITH THE GOD OF THE PROPHET, A HIDDEN SNARE ON
ALL HIS PATHS, HATRED IN THE HOUSE
OF HIS GOD (9;8):.
<<As mentioned above, "The mad prophet" was considered by some
(e.g. Maimonides, 1135-1204, in his
"Letter To Yeman") to be a reference to
Mohamed and the name of Mohammed (in
Hebrew and Arabic: "Machmad") does
appear in the passage. The desert sun,
sparse diet, and seclusion (as well
as the possible use of hashish and
various weeds smoked by some of the
Arabs) are liable to play tricks on
highlystrung spiritually inclined
individuals. If the people concerned
also suffer from epilepsy (as Mohammed
did) and delusions of grandeur so is
the propensity for error compounded.
The religion of Islam in effect is
derived from Arabic culture. Ishmael the
son of Abraham and Hagar his Egyptian
maidservant was the father of leading
elements amongst the Arabs. Prior to
the birth of Ishmael his mother was told:
[GENESIS 16:11] AND THE ANGEL
OF THE LORD SAID UNTO HER, BEHOLD, THOU ART
WITH CHILD AND SHALT BEAR A SON, AND
SHALT CALL HIS NAME ISHMAEL; BECAUSE
THE LORD HATH HEARD THY AFFLICTION.
[GENESIS 16:12] AND HE WILL BE A WILD
MAN; HIS HAND WILL BE AGAINST EVERY
MAN, AND EVERY MAN'S HAND AGAINST HIM;
AND HE SHALL DWELL IN THE PRESENCE
OF ALL HIS BRETHREN.
Onkelos (1st century CE) translated
the expression, "HIS HAND WILL BE
AGAINST EVERY MAN AND EVERY MAN'S HAND
AGAINST HIM" as meaning that he will
need everyone and everyone will need
him. This is the case today. Everyone
needs Arab oil and the Arabs need everyone
else to develop this oil and
market it. They also are often violently
disposed towards everyone else and
other people dislike them.
Historically, the Arabian Jews whom Mohammed massacred may have
been an offshoot from the Lost Ten
Tribes, i.e. "Ephraim". Regarding the
future the message of Hosea is a warning
that the forces of Islam are a
danger. Association with them threatens
disaster upon Ephraim which mainly
means Great Britain. Ephraim also includes
important elements in North
America, South Africa, and Australia.
A portion of Ephraim is also to be
found amongst the Jews The name Ephraim
in Scripture can stand too for the
leading power amongst the Ten Tribes
or all of the Ten Tribes in general.
The said verses may well contain a
hint that Ephraim will attempt some type
of rapport with "the god of the prophet"
and this will not turn out well.
And from our commentary on Hosea:
Regarding the future, some type of ill-fated bond between Ephraim
and the followers of Islam is spoken
of in the Biblical Book of Hosea. It
is obvious that the same Biblical Prophecies
may legitimately often be
understood in several entirely different
ways - as they were perhaps
intended to be. The verses should be
seen in their context. The overall
message is that the Prophet Hosea condemns
Ephraim, uses a word which may
be understood to be a form of the name
"Mohammed", speaks of the region of
Egypt and the east, and predicts a
disaster which somehow involves a mad
prophet also identified traditionally
as "Mohammed": The quotations are
from Hosea chapter nine:
...
"THEY WILL NOT DWELL IN THE LAND OF THE LORD, EPHRAIM SHALL RETURN
TO MITSRAYIM (EGYPT) AND EAT UNSANCTIFIED
BROTH IN ASSYRIA (9;3).
"FOR BEHOLD THEY ARE GONE DUE TO LOOTING EGYPT [Mitsrayim], MOPH
[Memphis] GATHERS THEM, MACHMAD [i.e.
Mahomad* k] BURIES THEM, THEIR SILVER
ENSNARED, THE THORN IN THEIR TENTS
[tabernacles] INHERITS THEM (9;6).
"THE DAYS OF VISITATION HAVE ARRIVED, THE DAYS OF PAYMENT HAVE
COME, ISRAEL SHALL KNOW, THE PROPHET
IS EVIL, MAD*l [Hebrew: "Meshuga"] A
MAN OF SPIRIT BECAUSE OF YOUR TRANSGRESSION
AND OF GREAT HATRED (9;7):
"EPHRAIM LOOKED OUT WITH THE GOD OF THE PROPHET, A HIDDEN SNARE ON
ALL HIS PATHS, HATRED IN THE HOUSE
OF HIS GOD (9;8):.
[Hosea 9:7] THE DAYS OF VISITATION ARE
COME, THE DAYS OF RECOMPENCE ARE
COME; ISRAEL SHALL KNOW IT: THE PROPHET
IS A FOOL, THE SPIRITUAL MAN IS
MAD, FOR THE MULTITUDE OF THINE INIQUITY,
AND THE GREAT HATRED.
as "The days of visitation have arrived,
the days of payment
have come, Israel shall know, the prophet
is evil, mad*l [Hebrew:
"Meshuga"] a man of spirit because
of your transgression and of great
hatred (9;7):
The muslims are not rational. Anyone
in the west who acted as islam seems
to require its adherents to think and
act would not be considered normal.
On the other hand similar things could
be said about the adherents of many
religions in different contexes so
it is perhaps best to concentrate upon
our own duties. Nevertheless the verses
are there and they did have a
specific intention.
