  1. SHAN ROSS: Iron age find in Scotland

BUILDERS who were on the brink of using a JCB digger to lay the foundations
of a new housing estate have unearthed what may be the richest
archaeological find in Scotland.

It includes the well-preserved skeleton, sword and valuable adornments of
an Iron Age warrior buried with full honours.

Experts who announced the discovery of the site at Alloa, Clackmannanshire
last night described the grave as one of the most "valuable and exciting"
to have been found on these shores.

It is believed that only around 100 such ceremonial Iron Age burials took
place in Scotland over 1000 years and, of those, only four had weapons
lying alongside the skeleton. Ancient communities disposed of their dead in
different ways and the majority of corpses in Iron Age Scotland were put in
rivers, left on exposed platforms, or put up trees.

Building work was first halted last Tuesday when workmen uncovered a Bronze
Age grave containing the skeleton of a woman along with an ornate food
vessel and copper alloy items dating back to between 2500 and 1500BC.

However, two days later, the digger uncovered the more important grave.

The Iron Age warrior whose head had been placed on a stone pillow is likely
to have been a chief ruling the surrounding kingdom, and appeared to have
been aged between 25 and 35 when he died around 200BC to 200AD.

His sword had been placed in his hand and surrounding him were valuable toe
rings, an ornate copper pin and glass beads. The artefacts indicate that he
was a high-ranking powerful individual who would have been able to display
great wealth.

Archaeological staff, who believe there may be more graves in the vicinity,
immediately secured the site to deter vandals.

Ian Ralston, professor of archaeology at Edinburgh University, said that a
great deal was already known about the Iron Age in Scotland in terms of
hill forts and brochs, but that rituals pertaining to death were still
largely undiscovered.

"We can trace Iron Age life in the north-west, the Western Isles and
Lowlands, but we still know very little about how they treated their dead."
he said.

"It is quite amazing to think that this skeleton has turned up by chance,
but it replicates a pattern whereby builders can be the ones who make these
fantastic finds."

Professor Ralston added that such graves were often discovered by farmers
ploughing their fields.

Susan Mills, museum and heritage officer for Clackmannanshire Council, said
the find was less than 50yds away from a Bronze Age cemetery discovered in

"The later burials of the Iron Age may have been based on some sort of folk
memory of the site being used as a burial place. It could have still been
regarded as a special place for those who lived in the area," she said.

"I also think the graves have been so well preserved because they were
protected for years by nursery greenhouses which were demolished in the

Paul Duffy, human remains and forensics expert from the archaeology
department at Glasgow University, said the site was the greatest find he
was likely to come across in his lifetime.

He said: "I've worked on many sites throughout my 12 years in the field but
these, particularly the Iron Age grave, far outweigh anything I've ever seen."

The skeletons have been taken to Glasgow University for forensic
examination, while the precious artefacts found with them have been sent to
a specialist firm in Edinburgh.

George Tainsh, director of the £1.5m Ochilview housing development, which
plans to build 30 houses on the site, said his company would cooperate
fully with archaeological experts to safeguard the graves.

A spokesman for Historic Scotland said: "It is a very significant discovery
for our understanding, particularly of Iron Age warriors and warfare and
the period immediately preceding the Romans."

Community chest

The Iron Age lasted around 800 years (c 750BC-43AD).

In 1993, late Iron Age houses were uncovered at Bostadh beach on Great Bernera.

The communities were primarily agricultural, with the daily routine
revolving around the maintenance of crops and livestock.

Villagers lived in wooden roundhouses.

By the end of the Iron Age, people were starting to live in larger and more
settled communities. Coinage had been introduced and wheel-thrown pottery
was being made in many villages.

From: Steve Collins <scollins@ll.net>
Subject: Urgent Notice on books
Shalom and Greetings to All,

I first wish to thank all of you for your interest in my new
books, The
Origins and Empire of Ancient Israel and Israel's Lost Empires.  Your
further interest in and support of my first book, The "Lost" Ten Tribes of
Israel...Found!, has always been greatly appreciated.  I know there are
many people who wish to purchase copies of my new books. However, it has
recently come to my attention that unforeseen distribution problems have
developed involving the placing of orders for my two new books at the
websites and postal address I had previously provided and recommended to
you.  Therefore it is necessary that I send you this email notification!

Due to these distribution problems, I now urge you to hold off on
any additional orders for my new books at those website and postal
addresses until you hear from me that the problems at these outlets have
been cleared up.

If you or anyone would like to reserve a signed copy of the new
books, I
am able to accommodate that request. Orders for the new books within the
USA may be sent to me at: Steven M. Collins, P.O. Box 88735, Sioux Falls,
SD  57109-1005.  The cost is now $20 per book plus $5 shipping fees for one
book (or $6 for two books). Before placing any international orders, it
would be best to contact me at scollins@ll.net for a specific shipping
quote. Due to the current (and unforeseen) distribution problems, I will
hold off on cashing anyone's checks until these problems are resolved and I
know orders can be processed.

The distribution problems involving my new books do not affect
orders for
my first book, The "Lost" Ten Tribes of Israel...Found!  I have plenty of
inventory to supply orders for these books, and they may be ordered from me
at my above address.  The price for a single copy of my first book is still
$20 plus $5 for shipping fees.  Bulk discounts are also still available.

I regret having to give you this notification and I apologize for any
inconvenience this may cause to anyone. I will update you as soon as the
distribution problems are resolved to my satisfaction.  Again, I thank you
for your patience and support.

The Expert

An efficiency expert concluded his lecture with a note of caution. "You
don't want to try these techniques at home."

"Why not?" asked somebody from the audience.

"I watched my wife's routine at breakfast for years," the expert
explained. "She made lots of trips between the refrigerator, stove,
table and cabinets, often carrying a single item at a time. One day I
told her, 'Hon, why don't you try carrying several things at once?'"

"Did it save time?" the person in the audience asked.

"Actually, yes," replied the expert. "It used to take her 20 minutes to
make breakfast.  Now I do it in seven."

5. Brit-Am Comment on Iraq
A criticism was sent to me concerning the alleged "wickedness" of the USA
and Britain in going to war against Iraq.
Our answer is concerning people like Sadam Hussein and Hitler and their
IN addition, in our opinion, the peoples of Joseph have an OBLIGATION to
ensure their own economic and geo-political supremacy in the face of all
other nations no matter what the cost. This is their God-given blessing and
This is for the ultimate good of all peoples of the earth.
The alternative is too horrible to contemplate.
The peoples of Joseph  also have an obligation to support "Judah", i.e. the
Jewish people in the State of Israel regardless of the merits of Judah -
which incidentally are many..
This is the duty of the peoples of Joseph emanating from how God made them.
This is the Biblical message.
We are prepared to discuss this within the parameters of Scripture.
The present events also constitute a living proof of the Brit-Am message
ever since we began.
