2. Quotations from Winston Churchill
Broadly speaking, the short words are the best, and the old words best of all.

History will be kind to me for I intend to write it.
It is a mistake to try to look too far ahead. The chain of destiny can only
be grasped one link at a time.

Men stumble over the truth from time to time, but most pick themselves up
and hurry off as if nothing happened.

Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm.

We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give.

I would say to the House, as I said to those who have joined this
Government: 'I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears, and sweat."

The empires of the future are the empires of the mind.

For myself I am an optimist - it does not seem to be much use being
anything else.

Never give in--never, never, never, never, in nothing great or small, large
or petty, never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense.
Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of
the enemy.

Shalom Yair,
I would like to clarify the definition and location of the Hittites.
Most people don't seem to realize that there were two groups of
Hittites.  One was descended from Ham, a son of Canaan (Gen. 10:15).
They lived in the Middle East, and sometimes all of the Canaanites in
general were referred to as Hittites because of their predominance in
the area when the Israelites entered.  It is quite certain that it is
this Hittite (ie. Canaanite) area which was included in the territory
which was given to the Israelites (Joshua 1:4).
Japheth also had a grandson, through Javan, named Heth (or Keth),
referred to in the King James Version as Kittim (Gen. 10:4),
but that is the name of the people who descended from him, which is a
common way of listing sons (perhaps an alternate way when the exact name
is not known).  This becomes obvious when looking at the Luther Bible
where these people are called Hittites (spelled Chittiter as if the
Hebrew letter caph had no daghesh, or as if it were spelled with a
chet).  The plural Kittim, or Chittim if the accent of these people
caused the first letter to shift, would have to be descended from a man
named Keth or Cheth or Heth.  It was these Japhethites who lived in
Anatolia.  They do not seem to come into contact with the Israelites
until they war with them prior to King David.  Later Kings David and
Solomon allowed these Japheth Hittites to fight in Israel's armies
during their reigns (2 Sam. 11:3-6, I Kings 10:29, 2 Kings 7:6), but
these are not the Hamitic Hittites of Canaan.  In my upcoming book I
will provide evidence that these Anatolian Hittites had a strong
admixture of Israelite blood out of Troy, and before that out of Egypt.
Best of wishes,
Terry Blodgett

4. Ruth
Tomorrow is the Feast of Shevuot (Weeks)
on which the Torah was given at Mount Sinai.
On this day it is traditional to read the Book of Ruth,
Ruth was a convert who of her own free will came and attached herself to
the people of Israel.
Ruth stands out not because of physical courage (that she undoubtedly also
possessed)
or inherited relationship but because of her innate kindness,
self-sacrifice, loyalty and compassion.
She became the ancestress of King David and through him of the Messiah.
