We have sent out a survey to Ephraimites to ascertain their opinions on a
number of issues, such as coming to Israel, staying in caravanim, studying
Tanach at seminars hosted by Rabbis, and participating in people/dialogue
encounters with Jews such as a Sukkot conference and our tours.  I have
drafted a short notice below ... could I ask you to include it in your next
BritAm posting?  Many of the people whose opinions we need are those who
support BritAm's work.  Thanks.  Also, please let me know when you speak in
Tekoa ... .

Wendy Sutherland and Bruce Brill of Rachel's Hidden Children (formerly
Ephraimite Encounters) have prepared a survey that they are asking
Ephraimites to complete in order to provide them with important information
that will assist them in the various projects that they are working on to
facilitate the regathering of the exiles of the House of Israel.  People
interested in participating in this survey are asked to email them at
ephraimreturns@012.net.il , requesting that a survey be sent to them.  A
confidential summary of survey responses will be shared with Rabbis and
with leaders of settlements who have expressed interest in working towards
greater understanding and dialogue between Judah and Ephraim.

3. Question on DNA
The above article says in effect that DNA can change after the death of its
carrier.
The article claims that in this case the DNA changed from one type to another
after the people had died. They applied a test (whose logic I did not
understand) indicating why they think this took place.
They applied the testing because the initial results were contrary to what
they had expected.
The article also indicates that the said changes could also take place
during the life of the carrier but suggests that a defensive mechanism would prevent this.
MY question is how can we be sure that due to environmental factors (or
whatever) similar changes do not take place during the lifetime of the carriers and
are then transmitted
onwards?
I am not suggesting something that happens all the time
but rather  a  rare occurrence effecting many of the population and
triggered by extraordinary circumstances?

IT'S likely to be some weeks yet before Minister for the Environment Martin
Cullen announces recommendations for dealing with and possibly preserving
what historians are now describing as Ireland's first town.

The discovery of the Viking settlement, at Woodstown, five miles from the
city, which is believed to date back to the mid-9th century, was made as
preparatory work got underway on the city's ?300m by-pass.

The site, located close to the River Suir, is 1.5 km long by 0.5 km wide
and so far up to 3,000 artifacts have been found over a distance of 150
yards. From photographs, which have been examined by the country's leading
archaeologists, early indications suggest that the complete original town
of Waterford founded by the Vikings remains virtually intact with dozens of
streets and dwellings just under the soil surface.

It is thought that up to 4,000 people may have lived there. To date, nails,
weights, jewellery, silverware, weapons and some ceramics have been found
along with some ship fragments.

 From evidence found at the site, a fleet of 120 Viking ships occupied the
Woodstown site about 812. This, in turn, gave them control of Waterford
Harbour and of the three-river system, the Suir, the Barrow and the Norse,
allowing them ready access upriver to the rich lands and monasteries of
these river valleys.

The settlement began as a longphort and that is what archaeologists
originally thought the find was until further examination. This is a
Dshaped fortification made by the Vikings to protect themselves and their
ships from attack. It was the typical fortress from which the Vikings
raided the countryside.

The Suir Valley Railway runs along the edge of Woodstown between the site
and the Suir. The builders of the railway demolished a mound in a field
called Seandún 'old fortress.' The mound was found to contain a large
number of bones. All indications now suggest that this may have been a
Viking ship burial, the only one found in Ireland.

John Maas, an academic PhD researcher, said that it was sheer luck that the
aerial photographs showed from the plant colouring that a larger site lay
beneath the surface.

"This is Ireland's equivalent of Pompeii. The find, if it proves to be what
we think it is, is the most significant piece of Viking history in Europe.
This will be worth up to ?200 million annually to the local economy if
properly dealt with by the authorities," explained Mr Maas.

7. MALACHI
             God says that HE will send HIS messenger before HIM to prepare
the way and rebuild the Temple (Malachi 3:1).  Rav Saadia Gaon (b. ca. 890
CE) and Iben Ezra (1080-1164 CE) said that the "MESSENGER" is the Messiah
son of Joseph. The Messiah son of Joseph, according to the Malbim
(1809-1879) and others will be the future head of the Lost Ten Tribes when
they return to re-unite with Judah.

Renewed Tribal Identification in the Messianic Era
             Malachi says that in the last Days the Tribe of Levi will be
purified (3:2-3). Maimonides said that this refers to the Messianic Era
when each Israelite will be informed which Tribe he belongs to (Maimonides,
Mishneh Torah, The Laws of Kings, ch. 12, no.3, cf. Talmud, Kiddushin 70;a
). We are called upon to give our tithes to God in order that HE may bless
us (3:10).
  [Malachi 4:4] REMEMBER YE THE LAW OF MOSES MY SERVANT, WHICH I COMMANDED
UNTO HIM IN HOREB FOR ALL ISRAEL, WITH THE STATUTES AND JUDGMENTS.
             The Lost Ten Tribes will have to return and accept anew the
Law of Moses and Israel. This is also mentioned in Jerusalem Talmud and
Zohar. They will return however and be reconciled as one group.

[Malachi 4:5] BEHOLD, I WILL SEND YOU ELIJAH THE PROPHET BEFORE THE COMING
OF THE GREAT AND DREADFUL DAY OF THE LORD:
[Malachi 4:6] AND HE SHALL TURN THE HEART OF THE FATHERS TO THE CHILDREN,
AND THE HEART OF THE CHILDREN TO THEIR FATHERS, LEST I COME AND SMITE THE
EARTH WITH A CURSE.
                 This verse refers to the Lost Ten Tribes returning and
identifying their ancestral fore-fathers from the Tribes of Israel.
