Hello Yair,
In your opinion is Genesis 49:11 related to Zechariah 9:9' It appears that two
donkeys (young and old) are mentioned in both books. Genesis has two vines and
Zechariah references two daughters. In Genesis the two vines could be
describing how Judah attaches to MBJ and MBD. In Zechariah, Jerusalem was
destroyed and Zion at the end-times is permanent. Does the Hebrew language
allow for the translation of kings or just king in Zechariah'
Your expertise is appreciated.
Bert
Genesis 49:11
Binding his foal unto the vine, and his ass's colt unto the choice vine; he
washed his garments in wine, and his clothes in the blood of grapes:
Zechariah 9:9
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy
King cometh unto thee: he [is] just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding
upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.
I will
cut off the chariot from Ephraim
And the horse from Jerusalem;
The battle bow shall be cut off.
He shall speak peace to the nations;
His dominion shall be 'from sea to sea,
And from the River to the ends of the earth.'
As for your suggestion that both Messiah son of Joseph and Messiah son of David
are referred to I looked through some of the Commentaries.
One Midrashic type source says two Saviors are indeed being referenced but it
says that the first Messiah was Moses
and the second one will be the Messiah son of David. Nevertheless it is
interesting to see that the general line of thought
is the same as your own and that your proposed construction is evidently
consistent with the text.
Apart from that a few commentaries (surprisingly for me) linked the passage in
general to BOTH Messiah son of Joseph and Messiah son of David
but they seemed to associate the expression, # riding upon an ass, and upon a
colt the foal of an ass # solely to Messiah son of David.
