Hello, Yair.
I have two small questions:I. What is the estimated population of the ten tribes today?
II. Could be the "daughters of Jerusalem" in the Song of Songs
represent the Jewish people, modern Israelis?
Thank you for help. Alex.

Brit-Am Replies:
(1) No-One really knows how many Israelites there are today.
See the Brit-Am Commentary to
[Deuteronomy 1:11] where Colbert (Bert) Bryan understands Scripture as
prediction ca. 3000 million Israelites!
http://www.britam.org/deuteronomy/1devorim.html
I figure there are around 300 to 600 million Israelites in the world today.
We will post a separate article on this subject.
(2) The daughters of Jerusalem in the Song of Solomon were said by the sages to
represent the non-Israelite Nations.
An alternate explanation identifying them with the Ten Tribes is also a
possibility.
if however they are to identified with the Jews who then is the sunburnt
heroine?
The Ten Tribes?
Somehow I doubt it.

2. Edward Anderson:
Remarks Concerning White Slaves, First Night Rights, Irish, Boers, and my
pending Knighthood
Re: Brit-Am Now no. 1538
Dear Yair,
I would like to comment about the Question #4 dealing with Irish Slaves.
You can get a book by Michael A. Hoffman, called, "They Were White, and They
Were Slaves" which deals with this issue in Colonial America and a lot of these
people were poor Irish. That was one main reason WHY black slaves were imported
into this country was because the white slaves didn't take to the heat very well
on the sugar plantations in the Carribean and had short life spans. That is
where we get the term, "Redneck" from, because of the deep sunburns that
effected the white slaves. To the victor goes the spoils, and the rich have the
money and the means to "rewrite" history. Though we are told that most poor
white people came over as "indentured servants" this was NOT true!!! Many could
not read or write, and there were MANY stipulations in their contracts that
could be changed at the whim of their masters and were, especially if the
girl/woman was attractive. The poor whites were always in "violation" of the
contracts and were basically SLAVES
because they never could fulfill the terms because the terms kept
changing!!!!!! Also, we get the term "slave" from SLAV which the Russians,
Polish, and Slovakian people are called and they were enslaved by the Chinese
for OVER EIGHT HUNDRED YEARS!!! It wasn't until the Prince of Russ had enough
white people together to overthrow the rule of the tatars that whites finally
became free in the Russian area. But back to the English, what was one of the
MAIN causes of the wars between Robert the Bruce and England was that it was
forbidden at that time for any Scots to marry unless the Scottish woman would
have first been "deflowered" by an English nobleman. This was a bunch of crap
and it was for the purpose of decreasing the Scottish population with a bunch of
English bastards!!! Just check out how the English treated India, South Africa
(Boers, anyone!!!???) the Middle East and the Arabs, just to name a few and they
wonder WHY the American colonies
REVOLTED!!! At any rate, anyone willing to do business with the English needs
to watch their back and know that the screwing is coming!!!
Sincerely,
Edward Anderson/

Brit-Am Reply:
I do not know why I always seem to have to take on the role of a defender
of the English. Nevertheless facts are facts. Mel Gibson in "Braveheart" did
indeed depict English (or rather Norman-English) nobles deflowering Scottish
brides on the first night.
Good old Mel has a vivid imagination.
There is no proof of it. Not even a suggested source. Not in England or
Scotland. This does not mean it did not take place but it does mean that until
some evidence is forthcoming we may assume it did not.
I personally doubt if the Church would have allowed it. The Church may not have
been what it claimed to be but relatively speaking it exerted a civilizing
influence and often maintained minimum standards of humanity and morals, despite
numerous exceptions.
The people also would not have stood for it. Even at that time, if the people
did not like it one was wise not to do it.
Actually the Right of the First Night is a well-known theme in Literature and
Legend.
Jewish tradition says that the Greek-Syrian Seleucid rulers of Judah exercised
it and this was one of the causes of the Maccabee revolt.
Also in Roman times it may have been practiced by the Roman rulers of Galilee.
Wikipedia has an interesting article on the subject.
See:
Droit de seigneur
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Droit_de_seigneur
There are also numerous other articles on the web on this matter.
As far as we know it never took place in the British isles. I saw somewhere that
one Irish source refers to it (as practiced amongst the ancient Irish?) but here
too this may be the result of literary borrowing from Continental sources.
In our own time, Lebanese Arabs in Australia had the practice of raping quote
young Australian girls before an audience of their compatriots.
This was publicly discussed in news stories and court cases. Look it up.
So too, in nearly every war of the Arabs against the Jews the Arab "volunteers"
have been promised a generous supply of Jewish women after 'victory".
Failing victory I suppose they had to make do with only 40 black eyed virgins in
their version of Valhalla.
Getting back to the British,
In South Africa the British fought against the Boers eventually incarcerating
their women and children. Plague broke out and many died. I have not gone into
the subject but I understand that the tragedy was a genuine calamity and had not
been planned. Apart from that it was preferable at that time that the British
rule all of South Africa. The Boers later took over, attempted to impose
Apartheid, and then gave up and turned the whole country over to the Blacks and
Colored Africans. Previously they had abandoned Ian Smith and the British
settlers in Rhodesia. Somewhere there may have been a missed opportunity here
with guilty parties on both sides.
Future activity (if there ever is any) should seek unity between British, Boer,
and Jewish elements.
In the Middle East the British made a lot of mistakes and offended everybody.
With hindsight and taking an overall view the British did help the Jews more
than any others.
As I said, fate and your humble selves seem to frequently push my revered being
into a reluctant defence of Perfidious Albion.
Maybe I should be nominated for a Knighthood?
If anyone here has the Royal Ear maybe they can suggest it to Her Royal
Highness?
Then Brit-Am would be headed by somebody called "Sir" and everyone would be
happy!
PS. As for the Irish, there is another side.
The Irish helped build the British Empire.
Irish volunteers often served as the backbone of the British Army.
A List of Irish holders of the Victoria Cross exists and it does not make for
short reading.
The Irish were often discriminated against in the field of promotion but they
did advance.
Lt. Gen. Sir Richard O'Connor defeated the Italians in North Africa and the
Germans in Normandy.
See:
World War II's Opening Salvoes in North Africa
by Jim Fox
http://www.touregypt.net/featurestories/wwii1.htm
The military insights of O'Connor in other spheres helped ensure Allied
victory.
Irish contributions to British Civilization per head of population equal (at the
least) those of the other participants.
Why deny it?

#5. Irish soldier (VC in British Army) buried in Ireland
Sergeant Major Cornelius Coughlan VC grave in Westport in Western Ireland
(forwarded by Roy Garland).
Cornelius
Coughlan
(Irish Soldier, VC)
http://www.victoriacross.org.uk/bbcoughl.htm
Extracts:
#Cornelius
Coughlan
was born in Eyrecourt,
Co. Galway in 1828. He joined the 75th ( Stirlingshire ) Regiment ( later the
Gordon Highlanders ) and served with the regiment for 21 years. He was destined
to become famous during the Indian Mutiny in 1857 and was awarded the Victoria
Cross for bringing an injured Private Corbett, who lay severely wounded, to
safety under fire.
#Later, during the siege of Delhi, when his officers were killed and he found
himself in command, he encouraged his wavering men by word and example to return
to the attack. This engagement resulted in victory and the Kabul Gate was
stormed and taken. This achievement was so noteworthy that a memorial tablet and
monument were erected over the gate and included in the inscription was the name
of Colour
Sergeant Cornelius Coughlan.
Queen Victoria wrote a personal letter to him complimenting him on his bravery
and lamenting the fact that she could not personally award him with his VC.

3. Hosea 10
[Hosea 10:1] Israel empties his vine;
He brings forth fruit for himself.
According to the multitude of his fruit
He has increased the altars;
According to the bounty of his land
They have embellished his sacred pillars.
[Hosea 10:2] Their heart is divided;
Now they are held guilty.
He will break down their altars;
He will ruin their sacred pillars.
[Hosea 10:3] For now they say,
We have no king,
Because we did not fear the LORD.
And as for a king, what would he do for us??
[Hosea 10:4] They have spoken words,
Swearing falsely in making a covenant.
Thus judgment springs up like hemlock in the furrows of the field.
[Hosea 10:5] The inhabitants of Samaria fear
Because of the calf of Beth Aven.
For its people mourn for it,
And its priests shriek for it.
Because its glory has departed from it.
[Hosea 10:6] The idol also shall be carried to Assyria
As a present for King Jareb.
Ephraim shall receive shame,
And Israel shall be ashamed of his own counsel.
[Hosea 10:7] As for Samaria, her king is cut off
Like a twig on the water.
[Hosea 10:8] Also the high places of Aven, the sin of Israel,
Shall be destroyed.
The thorn and thistle shall grow on their altars;
They shall say to the mountains, 'Cover us!'
And to the hills, 'Fall on us!'
[Hosea 10:9] O Israel, you have sinned from the days of Gibeah;
There they stood.
The battle in Gibeah against the children of iniquity
Did not overtake them.
[Hosea 10:10] When it is My desire, I will chasten them.
Peoples shall be gathered against them
When I bind them for their two transgressions.
[Hosea 10:11] Ephraim is a trained heifer
That loves to thresh grain;
But I harnessed her fair neck,
I will make Ephraim pull a plow.
Judah shall plow;
Jacob shall break his clods.
[Hosea 10:12] Sow for yourselves righteousness;
Reap in mercy;
Break up your fallow ground,
For it is time to seek the LORD,
Till He comes and rains righteousness on you.
[Hosea 10:13] You have plowed wickedness;
You have reaped iniquity.
You have eaten the fruit of lies,
Because you trusted in your own way,
In the multitude of your mighty men.
[Hosea 10:14] Therefore tumult shall arise among your people,
And all your fortresses shall be plundered
As Shalman plundered Beth Arbel in the day of battle.
A mother dashed in pieces upon her children.
[Hosea 10:15] Thus it shall be done to you, O Bethel,
Because of your great wickedness.
At dawn the king of Israel
Shall be cut off utterly.
Summary (based on Brit-Am Commentary).
In a sense this chapter could have been the beginning of the Book of Hosea.
Division amongst Israelite Tribes invites disaster. The cult of the Golden
bull-calves at Beth-el and Beth-Aven will have corrupted Ephraim and this
corruption will be responsible for terrible punishments. Ephraim will have acted
similarly to the homosexual monsters who once inhabited Gibeah of Benjamin.
Numerous foreign peoples will sense the weakness of Ephraim and attack him.
Ephraim was nicknamed "Aegel" or "Angle" (as in "Anglo-Saxon" and Angle-land:England)
meaning bull-calf but sometimes Ephraim acts like a little cow. If we repent and
do as well as we can God will have mercy on us and redeem us.
