Psalms 115 Psalms 115 [Psalms 115:1] NOT UNTO US, O LORD, NOT UNTO US, BUT UNTO THY NAME GIVE GLORY, FOR THY MERCY, AND FOR THY TRUTH'S SAKE. This Psalm is suitable for anyone in trouble. Everyone of us at some stage in their lives gets stuck in difficult situations. Mostly we come through them. We survive. If we manage to maintain our sense of justice and righteousness and continue to pray and believe in that period we will come through it in much sounder condition, get through it quicker, and recover from it more surely. On the national level this Psalm pertains to Israel, especially Judah, in its time of Exile. [Psalms 115:2] WHEREFORE SHOULD THE HEATHEN SAY, WHERE IS NOW THEIR GOD? Even now they say it. They also said it in the Holocaust. If this is the Chosen People why does God allow such things to be done to them? [Psalms 115:3] BUT OUR GOD IS IN THE HEAVENS: HE HATH DONE WHATSOEVER HE HATH PLEASED. God knows what HE is doing. He sees everything and HIS vision encompasses all of time. [Psalms 115:4] THEIR IDOLS ARE SILVER AND GOLD, THE WORK OF MEN'S HANDS. They value material benefits. The sources of anti-Semitism are numerous. Explanations and justifications for it vary. It can be for religious, or racial, or economical, or any number of other reasons. When one reason looses its appeal another one will be found. Nowadays anti-Zionism is fashionable but this is just an excuse. Whatever the justification often material benefits (idols of gold and silver) accruing from anti-Semitic actions are a motivating factor or at the least a cause of de facto acquiescence in the populations concerned. The Nazis roobed the Jews of Germany but took care to spread the benefits around. I am now reading "Hiterl's Beneficiaries. Plunder, Racial War, and the Nazi Welfare State" by Gotz Aly (2005, Translated 2006, Canada). So many people received jobs, property, possessions taken from Jews that they tended to go along with the Nazi Policies. The same pattern applied in other parts of Europe and has a long history. Even now the Arabs give out money, buy up universities through grants and funding "research" chairs, etc that the academic staff become obliged to go along with whatever particular orientation is desired from them. Often this does not mean being much different from what they really are anyway but just a change in emphasis and a little less objectivity that they really never cared for that much previously. Not only universities but also media outlets, businesses, and politicians follow the same pattern. [Psalms 115:5] THEY HAVE MOUTHS, BUT THEY SPEAK NOT: EYES HAVE THEY, BUT THEY SEE NOT: The idols cannot speak or hear. There are two types of idols: (a) Those that merely represent a higher power and serve as a focus in prayer to that power but are not considered to necvessarily have any intrinsic value of their own. (b) Sacred statues etc around which miracles are reported to have taken place and which their adherents serve as if the statue itself had powers of its own. The Psalm is saying that all idols even those that exist only in abstract thought are worthless. Keep away from such things and from superstitions. Anything that is taken as a substitute for the Almighty is worthless. [Psalms 115:6] THEY HAVE EARS, BUT THEY HEAR NOT: NOSES HAVE THEY, BUT THEY SMELL NOT: [Psalms 115:7] THEY HAVE HANDS, BUT THEY HANDLE NOT: FEET HAVE THEY, BUT THEY WALK NOT: NEITHER SPEAK THEY THROUGH THEIR THROAT. [Psalms 115:8] THEY THAT MAKE THEM ARE LIKE UNTO THEM; SO IS EVERY ONE THAT TRUSTETH IN THEM. Dead inanimate objects manipulated by human beings or any system invented by humans against the Almighty is not to ber trusted. It will betray whoever adheres to it. It in itself is empty. [Psalms 115:9] O ISRAEL, TRUST THOU IN THE LORD: HE IS THEIR HELP AND THEIR SHIELD. The People of Israel must trust in God Almighty. HE will help us. HE is our help and protector. [Psalms 115:10] O HOUSE OF AARON, TRUST IN THE LORD: HE IS THEIR HELP AND THEIR SHIELD. The Descendants of Aaroin became the Cohenim i.e. Priests who served in the Temple and instructed the people. Even now their descendants are probably prominent amongst those who try to lead the Hebrews along the right path. [Psalms 115:11] YE THAT FEAR THE LORD, TRUST IN THE LORD: HE IS THEIR HELP AND THEIR SHIELD. Anyone, from anywhere, of any origin, who fears the Almighty shuld trust in HIM. He will help you and protect you. Maybe in your life you have had periods where the Presence of Divine Providence was especially strong? Usually if you think back you may have been young, you may have been silly, etc, but the blessing was there. Usually you will find that such periods were accompanied by your doing some good to others or having been close to the Bible and Biblical values. We may not always appreciate it at the time but the Almighty does help us. [Psalms 115:12] THE LORD HATH BEEN MINDFUL OF US: HE WILL BLESS US; HE WILL BLESS THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL; HE WILL BLESS THE HOUSE OF AARON. The Israelites and the Cohenim will all be blessed. [Psalms 115:13] HE WILL BLESS THEM THAT FEAR THE LORD, BOTH SMALL AND GREAT. There you have it. Each and every one of us no matter who we are or in what situation we have eneded up in can be helped by God if we just trust in HIM and endeavor to do as HE wants. [Psalms 115:14] THE LORD SHALL INCREASE YOU MORE AND MORE, YOU AND YOUR CHILDREN. This is true. If not us then our children will be rewarded and looked after and usually the blessing will apply to both us and them. [Psalms 115:15] YE ARE BLESSED OF THE LORD WHICH MADE HEAVEN AND EARTH. God made everything and can do anything. [Psalms 115:16] THE HEAVEN, EVEN THE HEAVENS, ARE THE LORD'S: BUT THE EARTH HATH HE GIVEN TO THE CHILDREN OF MEN. We have been given the chance to do what we can, to determine our own fate, on this earth. This causes much suffering because people do not act as they should but it also can be made into a source of great blessing. [Psalms 115:17] THE DEAD PRAISE NOT THE LORD, NEITHER ANY THAT GO DOWN INTO SILENCE. God wants us to live. HE wants us to succeed in our lives and live good lifes for our own sake. Do not give up even when things get bad. God will help you. [Psalms 115:18] BUT WE WILL BLESS THE LORD FROM THIS TIME FORTH AND FOR EVERMORE. PRAISE THE LORD. We must praise the Almighty for ever and ever.
