[Psalms 118:1] O GIVE THANKS UNTO THE LORD; FOR HE IS GOOD: BECAUSE HIS MERCY ENDURETH FOR EVER.
O GIVE THANKS. Hebrew "Hodu" meaning "Give thanks" or "Avow" (as given by S.R. Hirsch), or "Acknowledge".
Whatever has happened to us, for most of us at least, we must admit that God has been good to us. HE has been better to us than we deserve. HE has helped us and helped our family even though we have committed offences against HIM. What is more we know that God is good and has eternal goodness in store for us.
HIS MERCY. Hebrew "chasdoi" i.e. His Kindness. HE will be king unto us and unto our families and people.

[Psalms 118:2] LET ISRAEL NOW SAY, THAT HIS MERCY ENDURETH FOR EVER.
All of Israel must acknowledge the Almighty and thank HIM.

[Psalms 118:3] LET THE HOUSE OF AARON NOW SAY, THAT HIS MERCY ENDURETH FOR EVER.
The House of Aaron are the Cohens or Priests who served in the Temple. In a spiritual sense all they who serve the Almighty and help others to do so may be considered as being represented by the HOUSE OF AARON.  Aaron was the brother of Moses. In Jewish tradition Aaron specialized in making peace between conflicting parties whether between one man and his neighbor or a husband and his missus. These matters are also included in the Service of the Almighty. These matters parallel service in the Temple.

[Psalms 118:4] LET THEM NOW THAT FEAR THE LORD SAY, THAT HIS MERCY ENDURETH FOR EVER.
Not only Israel in general and not only the most exalted amongst them (as symbolized by the House of Aaron) but also all those who live who fear God should give thanks unto him and acknowledge his mercy and kindness towards all of us.

[Psalms 118:5] I CALLED UPON THE LORD IN DISTRESS: THE LORD ANSWERED ME, AND SET ME IN A LARGE PLACE.
This verse contains a play-on-words.
IN DISTRESS in Hebrew is "Maystar" which also connotes a strait or narrow constricted area. When we are in trouble we may feel as if everything is closing in on us and not leaving us any room to breathe or act as we should.
A LARGE PLACE. Hebrew "Merchaviah" connoting a wide open area. When we are delivered from what oppresses us we are relived and feel as if we had been set down in an expanse that enables us to go on and function much better than we were previously able to.

[Psalms 118:6] THE LORD IS ON MY SIDE; I WILL NOT FEAR: WHAT CAN MAN DO UNTO ME?
God is on our side. We should always remember this fact and act accordingly.

[Psalms 118:7] THE LORD TAKETH MY PART WITH THEM THAT HELP ME: THEREFORE SHALL I SEE  MY DESIRE UPON THEM THAT HATE ME.
Others who help us will also be blessed and God will be on their side as well.
WITH THEM THAT HELP ME. Hebrew "be-ozri" also translatable as saying that God makes HIS presence with me felt through the help that is given me. We should try to see the Hand of the Almighty in daily events that occur to us.

[Psalms 118:8] IT IS BETTER TO TRUST IN THE LORD THAN TO PUT CONFIDENCE IN MAN.

[Psalms 118:9] IT IS BETTER TO TRUST IN THE LORD THAN TO PUT CONFIDENCE IN PRINCES.

[Psalms 118:10] ALL NATIONS COMPASSED ME ABOUT: BUT IN THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL I   DESTROY THEM.
All nations of the earth are against Judah and Israel.
Nearly all non-Israelite nations are fanatically against the USA and the State of Israel.
This is what was prophesied how it would be.
This Psalm was probably written by David as were most of the Psalms.
If it was not written by David it was written by another of the Prophets or by the entourage of David in an expanded sense. David identified with the Israelite nation in a complete sense. Whatever happened to the nation as far as David (or the composer of this Psalm if it was not David) was as if it happened to him personally. This applied to the past as well as to the future and the history of the Israelite peoples.

[Psalms 118:11] THEY COMPASSED ME ABOUT; YEA, THEY COMPASSED ME ABOUT: BUT IN THE   NAME OF THE LORD I WILL DESTROY THEM.
They surrounded me in an endless refrain of hatred and lies. They persecuted Judah and degraded him. They tell lies about the British and America. They are the Arabs and the Conspiracy Freaks and the Nazis and Identity nuts and all the others who upset us and seek our harm.

[Psalms 118:12] THEY COMPASSED ME ABOUT LIKE BEES: THEY ARE QUENCHED AS THE FIRE OF  THORNS: FOR IN THE NAME OF THE LORD I WILL DESTROY THEM.
"All that goes round comes round".
All they who attempt to harm Israel will be harmed themselves and know why it is happening to them.

[Psalms 118:13] THOU HAST THRUST SORE AT ME THAT I MIGHT FALL: BUT THE LORD HELPED ME.
THOU HAST this translation seems agreed upon by the Commentators. Nevertheless to me it seems that it should be rendered in the third person (he, she, it) rather than the second (you, thou).
THOU HAST THRUST SORE AT ME. Hebrew "Docha dichitani" which could be rendered, I have been pushed down over and over to make me fall down and fail.
THAT I MIGHT FALL. Hebrew "linPal" from the root "PaL". In Hebrew the same letter is used for both "F" and "P" and the two sounds interchange and therefore when tracing word origins the two letters may considered as one.
PaL =fall may be pronounced as "Fal" meaning the same as English "fall".
The Hebrew word "Fal" (i..e. "fall" in English) also connotes "fail" and maybe the English "fail" also comes from the Hebrew "FaL"?

[Psalms 118:14] THE LORD IS MY STRENGTH AND SONG, AND IS BECOME MY SALVATION.
Rejoice in God. Be strong through God and this will be your salvations.

[Psalms 118:15] THE VOICE OF REJOICING AND SALVATION IS IN THE TABERNACLES OF THE   RIGHTEOUS: THE RIGHT HAND OF THE LORD DOETH VALIANTLY.
Hang around good people. Be a good person yourself. Make your own being and surroundings "A Tabernacle of Righteousness" and you shall see salvation and rejoice in it.
We admit that All this is easier said than done and we ourselves cannot be said to have done it.
Nevertheless it is worth keeping in mind and kept as a goal worth striving toward.

[Psalms 118:16] THE RIGHT HAND OF THE LORD IS EXALTED: THE RIGHT HAND OF THE LORD  DOETH VALIANTLY.

[Psalms 118:17] I SHALL NOT DIE, BUT LIVE, AND DECLARE THE WORKS OF THE LORD.

[Psalms 118:18] THE LORD HATH CHASTENED ME SORE: BUT HE HATH NOT GIVEN ME OVER UNTO DEATH.
As long as thee is life there is hope.
It may be that we have suffered but there is still a chance for us to make our lifes better and to help others better their own lives.

[Psalms 118:19] OPEN TO ME THE GATES OF RIGHTEOUSNESS: I WILL GO INTO THEM, AND I WILL   PRAISE THE LORD:
A gate is an entrance. It is a narrow space that opens up onto a large expanse.
Sometimes we only need to make a beginning when a small opportunity to do good is opened unto us and this will lead onto bigger and greater things.

[Psalms 118:20] THIS GATE OF THE LORD, INTO WHICH THE RIGHTEOUS SHALL ENTER.
Once we are inside, on the side of the righteous, we are there with them and part of them.

[Psalms 118:21] I WILL PRAISE THEE: FOR THOU HAST HEARD ME, AND ART BECOME MY SALVATION.

[Psalms 118:22] THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REFUSED IS BECOME THE HEAD STONE OF THE  CORNER.
Very often the rejected and unwanted becomes the most important component. Do not despise others and do not despise yourself. Never give up.

[Psalms 118:23] THIS IS THE LORD'S DOING; IT IS MARVELOUS IN OUR EYES.
God helps and we will praise HIM.

[Psalms 118:24] THIS IS THE DAY WHICH THE LORD HATH MADE; WE WILL REJOICE AND BE GLAD IN IT.

[Psalms 118:25] SAVE NOW, I BESEECH THEE, O LORD: O LORD, I BESEECH THEE, SEND NOW PROSPERITY.
PROSPERITY. Hebrew "Hatslicha" which can mean prosperity or deliverance but to a Modern Hebrew speaker would connote more "success" in general.
We ask God to help us succeed.

[Psalms 118:26] BLESSED BE HE THAT COMETH IN THE NAME OF THE LORD: WE HAVE BLESSED  YOU OUT OF THE HOUSE OF THE LORD.
Be with  God and HE will be with you.

[Psalms 118:27] GOD IS THE LORD, WHICH HATH SHEWED US LIGHT: BIND THE SACRIFICE WITH   CORDS, EVEN UNTO THE HORNS OF THE ALTAR.
It is not enough to just go through the motions of doing a good deed.
The sacrificial animal had to be tied down so that it would not run away.
When we start to do something good we should try to carry it through to the end.

[Psalms 118:28] THOU ART MY GOD, AND I WILL PRAISE THEE: THOU ART MY GOD, I WILL EXALT  THEE.

[Psalms 118:29] O GIVE THANKS UNTO THE LORD; FOR HE IS GOOD: FOR HIS MERCY ENDURETH  FOR EVER.
