Psalms 119-peh

To Hear a Talk based on the Text below:

(ca. 19 minutes)

PE
This section has the first word of each verse beginning with the Hebrew Letter Peh.
Peh is the equivalent of the English letters "P" and "F".
In Hebrew the same letter is used for both sounds.
A word beginning with the letter Peh or having a Peh within it may have Peh sounded either as an "f" or as a  "P" depending on the grammatical structure and euphonic principles of the sentences, i.e. how it sounds and how easy it is to say.

Peh in Hebrew represents the Mouth. Words come out of the mouth and are connected with it.
One verse out of these eight verses speaks of the mouth and two speak of word" or "words".
Our newly-founded principle of looking for a common denominator in each eight-verse section of this Psalm based on the meaning of the Hebrew Letter each verse begins with is holding up.

Another pint worth mentioning is that in the Hebrew not only does the first word of each verse begin with a certain letter but, within the verses,  there is often a repetition of words containing the said letter. The result is a kind of rhythm with the particular letter of the section serving as peaks.
For example listen to the verses 119:130-132 in Hebrew. Do not worry about the meaning for now just note the recurring "P" sound.

[Psalms 119:129] THY TESTIMONIES ARE WONDERFUL: THEREFORE DOTH MY SOUL KEEP THEM.
WONDERFUL. Hebrew "Pela-ot" also understandable as meaning "amazing".
I am amazed at the beauty and wisdom behind the law and injunctions of the Bible.

[Psalms 119:130] THE ENTRANCE OF THY WORDS GIVETH LIGHT; IT GIVETH UNDERSTANDING UNTO THE   SIMPLE.
"THE ENTRANCE OF THY WORDS GIVETH LIGHT"  also understandable as saying "OPEN YOUR MOUTH AND LET YOUR WORDS SHINE". This is an expression often given to people who stammer or do not speak clearly. In other words the solution for people with speaking problems is often simply to encourage them to speak up and keep speaking.   Speaking problems may be caused by someone being afraid to speak.  The way to overcome it in some cases is simply to get the patient to speak as much as possible. The psychological factor that is inhibiting his speech will simply tire itself out and stop functioning enabling the patient to speak clearly.
Winston Churchill in his youth had a problem speaking but overcame it.
A famous Greek orator before he became famous also could not speak properly and used to stammer.
He went down to the sea-shore, filled his mouth with pebbles and kept speaking until the words came out clearly.

[Psalms 119:131] I OPENED MY MOUTH, AND PANTED: FOR I LONGED FOR THY COMMANDMENTS.
It is possible to paraphrase this verse,
I OPENED MY MOUTH AND TOOK A DEEP BREATH FOR I DESIRED TO FULFIL YOUR COMMANDMENTS.
Sometimes in order to keep the law and have the law fulfilled we need to speak out.
Many great men at the beginning had speech problems. This is natural.  Great men are often introspective and contemplative. They are also conscious of everything around them and affected by it. They are not always naturally outgoing. People like this at some stage of their lives are liable to have speech problems. Problems are there to overcome. When you want to say something and have trouble doing so taking a deep breath can indeed help. Deep breathing can help calm a person.

[Psalms 119:132] LOOK THOU UPON ME, AND BE MERCIFUL UNTO ME, AS THOU USEST TO DO UNTO  THOSE THAT LOVE THY NAME.
I love your name i.e. I love studying how GOD reveals HIMSELF in this world. Therefore I ask God to have mercy upon me not because I deserve it but simply because I am striving to appreciate HIM and being shown mercy will help me in this task.

[Psalms 119:133] ORDER MY STEPS IN THY WORD: AND LET NOT ANY INIQUITY HAVE DOMINION OVER ME.
Set me right. Show me the right path. Let me not sin. Let me not be lead or lead myself into any sinful situation.
LET NOT ANY INIQUITY HAVE DOMINION OVER ME. Guide my steps so that I not lose control of myself. Let not my own bad nature or the bad nature of others influence me against my real will which is to do the will of God.

[Psalms 119:134] DELIVER ME FROM THE OPPRESSION OF MAN: SO WILL I KEEP THY PRECEPTS.
We ask God to let us be free to do HIS will and not be subject to the caprice of others.

[Psalms 119:135] MAKE THY FACE TO SHINE UPON THY SERVANT; AND TEACH ME THY STATUTES.
Being lead in the ways of the Bible is a blessing. It liberates us. We ask God to free us and shine HIS face upon us so that we may learn HIS will.

[Psalms 119:136] RIVERS OF WATERS RUN DOWN MINE EYES, BECAUSE THEY KEEP NOT THY LAW.
A lot of sadness and remorse happens when we do not keep the Law of God.
Many regrets and sadness that we have in this life may be traced to us not doing the will of God.
