A PSALM OF DAVID
[Psalms 141:1] LORD, I CRY UNTO THEE: MAKE HASTE UNTO ME; GIVE EAR UNTO MY VOICE, WHEN I CRY UNTO THEE.
I CRY UNTO THEE. Hebrew "Karatica" literally I cried unto you". From the root KRA meaning call or cry unto. The English word "CRY" is itself derived from this Hebrew word root and CRY (i.e. KiRAI) is probably the correct derivative for verbal form in Biblical Hebrew.
HASTE may also be derived from the Hebrew word used here "Chusha" also pronounceable as Husha or in Northern Hebrew "Hus".
God is asked to hurry and help, to listen unto our calling HIM.
[Psalms 141:2] LET MY PRAYER BE SET FORTH BEFORE THEE AS INCENSE; AND THE LIFTING UP OF MY HANDS AS THE EVENING SACRIFICE.
We cannot go to the Temple or present ourselves properly as we should before the Almighty. We may call from our heart and ask God to hear us.
[Psalms 141:3] SET A WATCH, O LORD, BEFORE MY MOUTH; KEEP THE DOOR OF MY LIPS.
DOOR. Hebrew "DAL". S.R. Hirsch suggests that the connotations "doleh" draw forth and "dal" poor may be both intended. Related words in English apparently from t he same word root "DL" are dull and dole.
The Almighty is requested to help us watch our mouth. Often we say things we do not really mean or give expression to thoughts we would rather have kept to ourselves. This can hurt others whom we would not want to have offended and it can also harm us.
[Psalms 141:4] INCLINE NOT MY HEART TO ANY EVIL THING, TO PRACTISE WICKED WORKS WITH MEN THAT WORK INIQUITY: AND LET ME NOT EAT OF THEIR DAINTIES.
We ask God to help us not be trapped by the worked and not to let ourselves be led astray through bad company or the search for transient pleasures.
[Psalms 141:5] LET THE RIGHTEOUS SMITE ME; IT SHALL BE A KINDNESS: AND LET HIM REPROVE ME; IT SHALL BE AN EXCELLENT OIL, WHICH SHALL NOT BREAK MY HEAD: FOR YET MY PRAYER ALSO SHALL BE IN THEIR CALAMITIES.
The Hebrew in this verse is difficult. The King James Translation is consistent with the Commentary of the Radak (Kimchi).
It is difficult to receive reproof from anyone, even from those we respect and love. Nevertheless when someone we know has good intentions and does not want to harm us tells us that we need to improve ourselves we should heed them. This can only help us.
If you are a woman and were putting on make-up or a man getting a haircut and someone made a suggestion to greatly improve your appearance you would be thankful. So too if a righteous person tells you to correct yourself and how to make yourself a better human being you should listen to them.
[Psalms 141:6] WHEN THEIR JUDGES ARE OVERTHROWN IN STONY PLACES, THEY SHALL HEAR MY WORDS; FOR THEY ARE SWEET.
When we see our friends and peers whom we sometimes let misguide us are overcast for going in the wrong direction we will better appreciate the Biblical Message.
[Psalms 141:7] OUR BONES ARE SCATTERED AT THE GRAVE'S MOUTH, AS WHEN ONE CUTTETH AND CLEAVETH WOOD UPON THE EARTH.
We are much closer to dying than we realize. Our lives can be taken from us at any time. It is the natures of a human being as long as one lives to act as if one will live forever. Such is not the case. Every moment we are standing at the edge of the grave. We need to take ourselves seriously and relate to our duties as stated in the Bible while we are still able.
May hay while the sun shines.
The sun is shining.
Do what you can as well as you can while you still can!
[Psalms 141:8] BUT MINE EYES ARE UNTO THEE, O GOD THE LORD: IN THEE IS MY TRUST; LEAVE NOT MY SOUL DESTITUTE.
[Psalms 141:9] KEEP ME FROM THE SNARES WHICH THEY HAVE LAID FOR ME, AND THE GINS [Traps] OF THE WORKERS OF INIQUITY.
[Psalms 141:10] LET THE WICKED FALL INTO THEIR OWN NETS, WHILST THAT I WITHAL ESCAPE.
Let us believe in God and do what we should. HE will help us!
