Psalm 143 (NKJV)
Calling upon God to Hear Us
Psalm 143
A Psalm of David.

 1 Hear my prayer, O LORD,
         Give ear to my supplications!
         In Your faithfulness answer me,
         And in Your righteousness.

The Radak presents this Psalm as David or David representing the Jewish People as king that God answer us since we carry the message of God Himself.  Our knowledge may be imperfect and we too not worthy but we are what we are and do what we should according to how God made us and gave us.

 2 Do not enter into judgment with Your servant,
         For in Your sight no one living is righteous.

David asks God to have mercy despite the fact that David is not worthy. We ask God to answer us and hear our prayer.

 3 For the enemy has persecuted my soul;
         He has crushed my life to the ground;
         He has made me dwell in darkness,
         Like those who have long been dead.

"My Life".  Hebrew "chayati" or living soul.  The word may also be understood to mean "my vitality" or "my will to live".
S.R. Hirsch presents David in this Psalm as identifying himself with Judah in its time of Exile when all the world oppressed and persecuted the Jews just because the Jews remained faithful.

This Psalm is applicable to many situations both on the private and national levels.

 4 Therefore my spirit is overwhelmed within me;
         My heart within me is distressed.

 5 I remember the days of old;
         I meditate on all Your works;
         I muse on the work of Your hands.

We too are the work of the hands of God Almighty. HE has made us and He will help us.

 6 I spread out my hands to You;
         My soul longs for You like a thirsty land.  Selah

 7 Answer me speedily, O LORD;
         My spirit fails!
         Do not hide Your face from me,
         Lest I be like those who go down into the pit.

He asks that the face of God not be hidden, that he receive awareness that the Almighty heeds him.

 8 Cause me to hear Your lovingkindness in the morning,
         For in You do I trust;
         Cause me to know the way in which I should walk,
         For I lift up my soul to You.

"in the morning":  Give us a new day and show us what to do and how to act.

 9 Deliver me, O LORD, from my enemies;
         In You I take shelter.

WE flee unto God. He is our refuge and source of strength. Through HIM we will overcome everything.

 10 Teach me to do Your will,
         For You are my God;
         Your Spirit is good.
         Lead me in the land of uprightness.

 11 Revive me, O LORD, for Your name?s sake!
         For Your righteousness? sake bring my soul out of trouble.

 12 In Your mercy cut off my enemies,
         And destroy all those who afflict my soul;
         For I am Your servant.

The enemies of the People of Israel and Judah are the foes of God Almighty!
