Psalms 21 TO THE CHIEF MUSICIAN, A PSALM OF DAVID [Psalms 21:1] THE KING SHALL JOY IN THY STRENGTH, O LORD; AND IN THY SALVATION HOW GREATLY SHALL HE REJOICE! The Ruler of Israel shall rejoice in the strength of the Almighty. [Psalms 21:2] THOU HAST GIVEN HIM HIS HEART'S DESIRE, AND HAST NOT WITHHOLDEN THE REQUEST OF HIS LIPS. SELAH. The desire of the king is for the glory and benefit of his people who are also the Chosen People of the Almighty. [Psalms 21:3] FOR THOU PREVENTEST HIM WITH THE BLESSINGS OF GOODNESS: THOU SETTEST A CROWN OF PURE GOLD ON HIS HEAD. << PREVENTEST HIM >>: This is a translation of the Hebrew (tekadmeno) which more correctly should be rendered (S.R. Hirsch) as "anticipated him". The Almighty has already prepared blessings of goodness for His annoited. [Psalms 21:4] HE ASKED LIFE OF THEE, AND THOU GAVEST IT HIM, EVEN LENGTH OF DAYS FOR EVER AND EVER. In the Last Days King David will rule over Israel. This blessing is two-fold. The seed of David will always have the right of rulership. Ultimately they shall rule over Israel and the world for eternity. The blessing also hints at the next life in the world to come. [Psalms 21:5] HIS GLORY IS GREAT IN THY SALVATION: HONOUR AND MAJESTY HAST THOU LAID UPON HIM. [Psalms 21:6] FOR THOU HAST MADE HIM MOST BLESSED FOR EVER: THOU HAST MADE HIM EXCEEDING GLAD WITH THY COUNTENANCE. Through and In the Presence of the Almighty the King shall be delighted. [Psalms 21:7] FOR THE KING TRUSTETH IN THE LORD, AND THROUGH THE MERCY OF THE MOST HIGH HE SHALL NOT BE MOVED. [Psalms 21:8] THINE HAND SHALL FIND OUT ALL THINE ENEMIES: THY RIGHT HAND SHALL FIND OUT THOSE THAT HATE THEE. Those who hate the Annoited King of Israel hate the Almighty. The Lost Ten Tribes have to be reconciled to Judah and to accept the seed of David. Accepting the Seed of David means recognizing the Oral Law. David was descended from Ruth the Moabitess and it is only through the Oral Law explanation that the prohibition of Moabite seed is seen to have applied only to males and not to females. There are those who try to get around this subject by claiming that Ruth was not really a Moabitess but rather an Israelite who lived in Moab. The Bible does not say this. The Bible says that Ruth was a descendent of Moab and there was never a tradition or opinion that said otherwise. Ruth came from Moab and David is legitimate thanks to the Oral law. Rejecting the Oral Law means rejecting David. In the lifetime of David there were those who tried to say that David was illegitimate due to his descent from Ruth. They denied the validity of the Oral Law ruling in order to downgrade the House of David. We will write more on this subject another time. [Psalms 21:9] THOU SHALT MAKE THEM AS A FIERY OVEN IN THE TIME OF THINE ANGER: THE LORD SHALL SWALLOW THEM UP IN HIS WRATH, AND THE FIRE SHALL DEVOUR THEM. [Psalms 21:10] THEIR FRUIT SHALT THOU DESTROY FROM THE EARTH, AND THEIR SEED FROM AMONG THE CHILDREN OF MEN. [Psalms 21:11] FOR THEY INTENDED EVIL AGAINST THEE: THEY IMAGINED A MISCHIEVOUS DEVICE, WHICH THEY ARE NOT ABLE TO PERFORM. They intended to deny the legitimacy of David and his right to rule over Israel. They went against the will of the Almighty. So too, in our time the enemies of Judah and Joseph are the enemies of God. [Psalms 21:12] THEREFORE SHALT THOU MAKE THEM TURN THEIR BACK, WHEN THOU SHALT MAKE READY THINE ARROWS UPON THY STRINGS AGAINST THE FACE OF THEM. Or this is a matapphor in which the Almighty is likened to a human sending his military force top beat his opponent OR David is saying that through the victory of human military force the truth of the Almighty and the legitimacy of David will be established. [Psalms 21:13] BE THOU EXALTED, LORD, IN THINE OWN STRENGTH: SO WILL WE SING AND PRAISE THY POWER. The victory of Israel and of the seed of David is assured. We have the choice and opportunity toi be on the winning side from the very beginning. Psalms Index HOme |
