Psalms 23 A PSALM OF DAVID [Psalms 23:1] THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD; I SHALL NOT WANT. God looks after me like a shepherd over one of his flock. HE gives me my needs. [Psalms 23:2] HE MAKETH ME TO LIE DOWN IN GREEN PASTURES: HE LEADETH ME BESIDE THE STILL WATERS. <<PASTURES>>: Hebrew "neot" i.e. pleasant pastures. Trees, grass, skylines, air, sunshine, wind, etc. There are very many pleasant things in life that we usually take for granted. Look around every now and again and enjoy what you have been given. [Psalms 23:3] HE RESTORETH MY SOUL: HE LEADETH ME IN THE PATHS OF RIGHTEOUSNESS FOR HIS NAME'S SAKE. <<PATHS>>: Hebrew "ma-aglai" literally circuits, i.e. surrounding circumstance of justice. If we follow the Law of the Almighty we shall do justice with ourselves and others. This is a blessing. It gives us true self-respect and natural honor in our own eyes and that of our family and others. This is in principle easy to achieve but most of us fall down at some time or other. The trick is not to keep falling but get back on track and stay there as well as we can. [Psalms 23:4] YEA, THOUGH I WALK THROUGH THE VALLEY OF THE SHADOW OF DEATH, I WILL FEAR NO EVIL: FOR THOU ART WITH ME; THY ROD AND THY STAFF THEY COMFORT ME. There are dangers around us in both the physical and spiritual senses. It is as if the surroundings want to destroy us. If we stay with God we need fear no evil. [Psalms 23:5] THOU PREPAREST A TABLE BEFORE ME; IN THE PRESENCE OF MINE ENEMIES; THOU; ANOINTEST MY HEAD WITH OIL; MY CUP RUNNETH OVER. [Psalms 23:6] SURELY GOODNESS AND MERCY SHALL FOLLOW ME ALL THE DAYS OF MY LIFE: AND I WILL DWELL IN THE HOUSE OF THE LORD FOR EVER. This means literally the Temple. The Lost Ten Tribes must help rebuild the Temple. It also means contemplating the Word of God in the Bible and praying. This was a personal prayer of King David but it written down and given over so that every person may use it in their own way according to their own need. Psalms Index HOme |
