Psalms 29
A PSALM OF DAVID[Psalms 29:1] GIVE UNTO THE LORD, O YE MIGHTY, GIVE UNTO THE LORD GLORY AND STRENGTH. [Psalms 29:2] GIVE UNTO THE LORD THE GLORY DUE UNTO HIS NAME; WORSHIP THE LORD IN THE BEAUTY OF HOLINESS. [Psalms 29:3] THE VOICE OF THE LORD IS UPON THE WATERS: THE GOD OF GLORY THUNDERETH: THE LORD IS UPON MANY WATERS. This psalm has been interpreted as giving praise to the Almighty who reveals Himself through the wonders of nature. The Radak explains it in an allegorical manner: The Radak suggest that the MIGHTY are Israel, The Gentiles are represented by THE CEDARS OF LEBANON (cf. Ezekiel 31:3) and by the Mountains (Isaiah 54:10). The destruction of the pagans is represented by the action of a great flood of water or to destruction wrought by the action of water. The Psalm indicates the final war of Gog and Magog when those nations who do not recognize the God of Israel will war against Israel and meet their downfall. It may be that The Gentile Nations are referred to as Cedars of Lebanon since in the future they are destined to be ruled from Israel represented by Lebanon. [Psalms 29:4] THE VOICE OF THE LORD IS POWERFUL; THE VOICE OF THE LORD IS FULL OF MAJESTY. [Psalms 29:5] THE VOICE OF THE LORD BREAKETH THE CEDARS; YEA, THE LORD BREAKETH THE CEDARS OF LEBANON. [Psalms 29:6] HE MAKETH THEM ALSO TO SKIP LIKE A CALF; LEBANON AND SIRION LIKE A YOUNG UNICORN. These are all symbols of Israel. Lebanon and Sirion are mountain ranges in the Land of Israel. The bull-calf represents Ephraim, the Unicorn represents Manasseh. Ephraim is destined to inherit Lebanon and Gilead meaning Syria and its surroundings (Zechariah 10:11) [Psalms 29:7] THE VOICE OF THE LORD DIVIDETH THE FLAMES OF FIRE. [Psalms 29:8] THE VOICE OF THE LORD SHAKETH THE WILDERNESS; THE LORD SHAKETH THE WILDERNESS OF KADESH. [Psalms 29:9] THE VOICE OF THE LORD MAKETH THE HINDS TO CALVE, AND DISCOVERETH THE FORESTS: AND IN HIS TEMPLE DOTH EVERY ONE SPEAK OF HIS GLORY. <<DISCOVERETH THE FORESTS>>: In Hebrew it says "Uncovers the forests", i.e. exposes their vulnerability. The forests represent the peoples of the world. God will punish the heathen and reveal His great power so that all peoples of the earth (including the Israelite nations) will worship Him. [Psalms 29:10] THE LORD SITTETH UPON THE FLOOD; YEA, THE LORD SITTETH KING FOR EVER. The LORD Almighty possesses the means to discipline all of us. The control is in His hands. He is the master and king of us all, the final answer and source of redemption. [Psalms 29:11] THE LORD WILL GIVE STRENGTH UNTO HIS PEOPLE; THE LORD WILL BLESS HIS PEOPLE WITH PEACE. When I served in the Israei Army during my Infantry "Rookie" training in the Sinai Desert (that then belonged to Israel) we had a medic for about a month who was actually a citizen doing his annual military service. His name was Chaim Sabato and he was destined to became a famous Rabbi and author. Even then he gave the impression of a very learned person. He used to quote the above verse as meaning that we must ask the Almighty to give us strength. When we have strength we will have peace. Weakness invites victimization and attack. God will give us strength and this will be a means to achieve peace and maintain it. Psalms Index Home |
