Psalms 87

A PSALM OR SONG FOR THE SONS OF KORAH
This Psalm was composed to be sung in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. The Temple service was accompanied by whole choirs of singers, orchestras, and ensembles with musical instruments. The musicians in the Temple were from the Tribe of Levi. Levites also officiated in other tasks. This special Psalm was composed to be sung by a certain clan amongst the Levites descendants of Korah. Korah is recalled in the Bible (Numbers chapter 16) as leading a revolt against Moses and being punished for it.
We should learn from this.
In some cases our forebears were not as good as they should have been.
It may even be that they were bad people.
Nevertheless there is hope for us.
Just as the Children of
Korah merited to serve in  the Holy Temple despite what their ancestor had done so too may we be enabled to do great things with our own lives or at the least live lifes of merit.

[Psalms 87:1] HIS FOUNDATION IS IN THE HOLY MOUNTAINS.

[Psalms 87:2] THE LORD LOVETH THE GATES OF ZION MORE THAN ALL THE DWELLINGS OF JACOB.
Jerusalem is the Holy City. Jerusalem is the city of God. Jerusalem is the city of David. Jerusalem is the former capital of Israel and Judah when they were united as one nation. Jerusalem will be the future capital of Judah and Israel when they will once again unite. Jerusalem ultimately will be the Capital City of the whole world, of all humanity.
Jerusalem and Zion and what is represented by Zion i.e. Zionism is the Will of the Almighty.

[Psalms 87:3] GLORIOUS THINGS ARE SPOKEN OF THEE, O CITY OF GOD. SELAH.
<<GLORIOUS THINGS>>:  In Hebrew "nicbadoth" literally "honorable things" or "matters that one may take pride in".  All they who speak well of Zion and of the Zionist enterprise bring honor to themselves and to their families. The Almighty will reward them.

[Psalms 87:4] I WILL MAKE MENTION OF RAHAB AND BABYLON TO THEM THAT KNOW ME: BEHOLD  PHILISTIA, AND TYRE, WITH ETHIOPIA; THIS MAN WAS BORN THERE.
<<RAHAB>>: this is another name for "Egypt". In Hebrew the word connote pride and arrogance. It may actually be based on a similar sounding term the Egytpians called themselves or by which they were known to others.
<<
PHILISTIA>>:  The Philistines should be associated with Minoan (Crete and Cyprus) and Mycenean (Ancient Greece) civilization.  They were a powerful people with great achievements.
<<
TYRE>>: Tyre (in Hebrew "Tsur" meaning "Rock") was the foremost Phoenician city. It was located on the coast of Lebanon and a great trading emporium. Phoenician ships from Tyre traded throughout the Ancient World.
<<ETHIOPIA>>: In Hebrew "
Cush" which can mean "Ethiopia" or Africa in general or in some cases India and other regions.
All these places were the foremost powers in Ancient Times. Each one took pride in prominent personages that had emerged from them saying, "Such-and-such a person was a native of our country".

[Psalms 87:5] AND OF ZION IT SHALL BE SAID, THIS AND THAT MAN WAS BORN IN HER: AND THE HIGHEST HIMSELF SHALL ESTABLISH HER.
Whatever the other places take pride in due to whomsoever was born within them is nothing to what in the future will be said about Zion.  The Almighty Himself will cause HIS Presence to dwell within the Temple. Even now one should pray towards the Hold Temple as King Solomon said when he consecrated the Temple (1-Kings chapter 8).

[Psalms 87:6] THE LORD SHALL COUNT, WHEN HE WRITETH UP THE PEOPLE, THAT THIS MAN WAS BORN THERE. SELAH.
No matter where we were born we should relocate ourselves psychologically to "Jerusalem",  to the Bible.
There are people who take this literally, come to Jerusalem and loose their  balance. This is a known phenomenon.  The Almighty does not want a person to harm oneself. Pray to God, study the Bible, and do as well as you can and the Almighty will guide you.
At all events no matter where we are, or who we are, we should consider ourselves children of Jerusalem and citizens of the Bible.

Commentary of Rashi (France, 1040 -1105 CE):
##...In the future when God records the punishments to be meted out to the idolaters, HE will then register those of Israel who have been swallowed up amongst them and those who were forced to join them. He will bring them out and say, These were descended from the inhabitants of Zion. He will choose them for Himself as Isaiah says:   AND I WILL ALSO TAKE OF THEM FOR PRIESTS [Hebrew: "Cohenim"] AND FOR LEVITES [Isaiah 66:21]. From out of the Gentiles who will bring them forth as offerings I will take those [of Israelite descent] who were assimilated amongst them. These will include Cohens [i.e. Priests] and Levites. They are not foreigners. Before ME their identity is revealed, says the Almighty.
And where does the Almighty say it?
THE SECRET THINGS BELONG UNTO THE LORD OUR GOD [Deuteronomy 29:29].

[Psalms 87:7] AS WELL THE SINGERS AS THE PLAYERS ON INSTRUMENTS SHALL BE THERE: ALL MY SPRINGS ARE IN THEE.
Everything comes out of Jerusalem All good things in this world had their source in the Bible.
