Psalms 91
Psalms 91 [Psalms 91:1] HE THAT DWELLETH IN THE SECRET PLACE OF THE MOST HIGH SHALL ABIDE UNDER THE SHADOW OF THE ALMIGHTY. <<THE ALMIGHTY>>: Hebrew "Shaddai" connoting (say Rashi and Yehonatan) Strength. One should strive to abide with God. He should become our strength, our secret "hiding place" when we commune with HIM. HE will direct us through HIS Divine Providence. [Psalms 91:2] I WILL SAY OF THE LORD, HE IS MY REFUGE AND MY FORTRESS: MY GOD; IN HIM WILL I TRUST. [Psalms 91:3] SURELY HE SHALL DELIVER THEE FROM THE SNARE OF THE FOWLER, AND FROM THE NOISOME PESTILENCE. <<NOISOME PESTILENCE>>: Hebrew "Dever" (plague) "Havot" connotes both "emty" and "breaking". The Malbim says that here they who trust in God are promised deliverance from the evils of mankind (represented by the "fowler") who have free choice and may choose to harm us and from the evils of nature and the surroundings represented by the Plague. [Psalms 91:4] HE SHALL COVER THEE WITH HIS FEATHERS, AND UNDER HIS WINGS SHALT THOU TRUST: HIS TRUTH SHALL BE THY SHIELD AND BUCKLER. [Psalms 91:5] THOU SHALT NOT BE AFRAID FOR THE TERROR BY NIGHT; NOR FOR THE ARROW THAT FLIETH BY DAY; [Psalms 91:6] NOR FOR THE PESTILENCE THAT WALKETH IN DARKNESS; NOR FOR THE DESTRUCTION THAT WASTETH AT NOONDAY. [Psalms 91:7] A THOUSAND SHALL FALL AT THY SIDE, AND TEN THOUSAND AT THY RIGHT HAND; BUT IT SHALL NOT COME NIGH THEE. This is a high level of protection that some of those who trust in the Almighty merit to achieve. The fact is that for someone who believes in God anything is possible. Different levels of belief exist and most of us only believe in a general sense. Nevertheless even this when it is accompanied by a reasonable adherence to good deeds and abstinence from sin often leads to miracles. Every one of us at some stage in their life has experienced times when they felt close to the ALMIGHTY. VERY OFTEN IN THOSE SPECIAL TIMES MIRACLES HAPPENED TO US THAT ONLY WE WERE AWARE OF and very often that only we can appreciate. [Psalms 91:8] ONLY WITH THINE EYES SHALT THOU BEHOLD AND SEE THE REWARD OF THE WICKED. [Psalms 91:9] BECAUSE THOU HAST MADE THE LORD, WHICH IS MY REFUGE, EVEN THE MOST HIGH, THY HABITATION; [Psalms 91:10] THERE SHALL NO EVIL BEFALL THEE, NEITHER SHALL ANY PLAGUE COME NIGH THY DWELLING. [Psalms 91:11] FOR HE SHALL GIVE HIS ANGELS CHARGE OVER THEE, TO KEEP THEE IN ALL THY WAYS. <<ANGELS>>In Hebrew "Malachav" meaning literally "HIS emissaries". An "angel" is a messenger and the term can apply to a human agent as well as a supernatural one. It may happen that we are in trouble and almost out of nowhere someone we did not expect turns up to help us. This too may be considered the action of "His angels". [Psalms 91:12] THEY SHALL BEAR THEE UP IN THEIR HANDS, LEST THOU DASH THY FOOT AGAINST A STONE. We should avoid sin. Young people are sometimes caught up in sinful habits they find it difficult to break out of. They should be advised to keep trying. To find permitted alternatives and to ask God to help them. If God is approached HE will answer. [Psalms 91:13] THOU SHALT TREAD UPON THE LION AND ADDER: THE YOUNG LION AND THE DRAGON SHALT THOU TRAMPLE UNDER FEET. <<DRAGON>>: Hebrew "tanin". This is a difficult word. In Modern Hebrew the term may be applied to either a "jackal" or a "crocodile" and in Biblical Hebrew it has other possible applications. [Psalms 91:14] BECAUSE HE HATH SET HIS LOVE UPON ME, THEREFORE WILL I DELIVER HIM: I WILL SET HIM ON HIGH, BECAUSE HE HATH KNOWN MY NAME. [Psalms 91:15] HE SHALL CALL UPON ME, AND I WILL ANSWER HIM: I WILL BE WITH HIM IN TROUBLE; I WILL DELIVER HIM, AND HONOUR HIM. [Psalms 91:16] WITH LONG LIFE WILL I SATISFY HIM, AND SHEW HIM MY SALVATION. If we are with God, God will be with us. We will call to HIM and HE will answer, help and save us, and through HIM and because of HIM we will be respected by others and have self-respect. Psalms Index Home |
