Psalms 95
Psalms 95 [Psalms 95:1] O COME, LET US SING UNTO THE LORD: LET US MAKE A JOYFUL NOISE TO THE ROCK OF OUR SALVATION. This Psalm is a call to exultation in the Almighty. It is also a call to National Repentance as is made clear in its final verses. [Psalms 95:2] LET US COME BEFORE HIS PRESENCE WITH THANKSGIVING, AND MAKE A JOYFUL NOISE UNTO HIM WITH PSALMS. [Psalms 95:3] FOR THE LORD IS A GREAT GOD, AND A GREAT KING ABOVE ALL GODS. A GREAT GOD, Hebrew "El (God) Gadol (Great)". GODS . Hebrew "Elohim" meaning "gods", or God, or Judges, Mighty Ones, etc. The word may be used in either the plural or singular sense. Similarly we have "baal" and "baalim" both meaning "owner with "baalim" being applicable in either the singular or plural. [Psalms 95:4] IN HIS HAND ARE THE DEEP PLACES OF THE EARTH: THE STRENGTH OF THE HILLS IS HIS ALSO. [Psalms 95:5] THE SEA IS HIS, AND HE MADE IT: AND HIS HANDS FORMED THE DRY LAND. [Psalms 95:6] O COME, LET US WORSHIP AND BOW DOWN: LET US KNEEL BEFORE THE LORD OUR MAKER. [Psalms 95:7] FOR HE IS OUR GOD; AND WE ARE THE PEOPLE OF HIS PASTURE, AND THE SHEEP OF HIS HAND. TO DAY IF YE WILL HEAR HIS VOICE, The previous verses emphasized the fact that the God of Israel is the Creator who reigns over all Creation, has absolute power, and that no power is greater than HIM. The present verse brings us back to the realization that God is also the special God of Israel. Whatever the purpose or justification may be the Almighty saw fit to take Israel as HIS chosen people and reveal Himself to the world through them. [Psalms 95:8] HARDEN NOT YOUR HEART, AS IN THE PROVOCATION, AND AS IN THE DAY OF TEMPTATION IN THE WILDERNESS: Our forefathers sinned. We are their descendants and liable to do the same. We should be aware of these inherited tendencies of ours and avoid repeating them. S.R. Hirsch points out that Israel in its period of Exile is in the Wilderness according to the Prophets. Cf. SPEAK YE COMFORTABLY TO JERUSALEM, AND CRY UNTO HER, THAT HER WARFARE IS ACCOMPLISHED, THAT HER INIQUITY IS PARDONED: FOR SHE HATH RECEIVED OF THE LORD'S HAND DOUBLE FOR ALL HER SINS [Isaiah 40:2]. "Jerusalem" strictly speaking applies to Judah but it has some applicability also to the rest of Israel. The sins are paid up for and now comfort is coming. THE VOICE OF HIM THAT CRIETH IN THE WILDERNESS, PREPARE YE THE WAY OF THE LORD, MAKE STRAIGHT IN THE DESERT A HIGHWAY FOR OUR GOD [Isaiah 40:3]. Also: AND I WILL BRING YOU INTO THE WILDERNESS OF THE PEOPLES, AND THERE WILL I PLEAD WITH YOU FACE TO FACE [Ezekiel 20:35]. For the opinion that 'Wilderness" refers to North America, See the Brit-Am Commentary on this Ezekiel 20:35 http://www.britam.org/Ezekiel16to20.html [Psalms 95:9] WHEN YOUR FATHERS TEMPTED ME, PROVED ME, AND SAW MY WORK. [Psalms 95:10] FORTY YEARS LONG WAS I GRIEVED WITH THIS GENERATION, AND SAID, IT IS A PEOPLE THAT DO ERR IN THEIR HEART, AND THEY HAVE NOT KNOWN MY WAYS: [Psalms 95:11] UNTO WHOM I SWARE IN MY WRATH THAT THEY SHOULD NOT ENTER INTO MY REST. Our forefathers were punished. The generation that came out of Egypt wandered in the Wilderness and were not allowed to enter the Promised Land. We are no better than they, perhaps much less so. We must not repeat their mistake. Psalms Index Home |
