We are now beginning the Book of Deuteronomy which in Hebrew is called Sefer (Book of) Devorim.
This week's portion is also called is called "
Devorim" meaning "words" because of the expresion  "the words which Moses spake" in the first verse.
The book
Sefer (Book of) Devorim is also known as Mishneh Torah which could be translated as meaning  "The Second Torah". Devorim is built around repetitions in summarized form of events and commandments that have already begin along with the insertion of new information and some new commandments. The new commandments in this book include (Levirate marriage, the punishment for making an Evil Report about one's wife, divorce laws, false witnesses, etc (Nachmanides).
 

This week's portion includes the first part of the Book of Deuteronomy (verses 1:1 to 3:22). The whole Book of Deuteronomy is also called "Devorim" in Hebrew.
 
  [Deuteronomy 1:1] THESE BE THE WORDS WHICH MOSES SPAKE UNTO ALL ISRAEL ON THIS SIDE JORDAN IN THE WILDERNESS, IN THE PLAIN OVER AGAINST THE RED SEA, BETWEEN PARAN, AND TOPHEL, AND LABAN, AND HAZEROTH, AND DIZAHAB.           
 
[Deuteronomy 1:2] (THERE ARE ELEVEN DAYS' JOURNEY FROM HOREB BY THE WAY OF MOUNT SEIR UNTO KADESHBARNEA.)                   
 
[Deuteronomy 1:3] AND IT CAME TO PASS IN THE FORTIETH YEAR, IN THE ELEVENTH MONTH, ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE MONTH, THAT MOSES SPAKE UNTO THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL, ACCORDING UNTO ALL THAT THE LORD HAD GIVEN HIM IN COMMANDMENT UNTO THEM;                    
 
[Deuteronomy 1:4] AFTER HE HAD SLAIN SIHON THE KING OF THE AMORITES, WHICH DWELT IN HESHBON, AND OG   THE KING OF BASHAN, WHICH DWELT AT ASTAROTH IN EDREI:
HESHBON in Hebrew means "reckoning" or thought.
EDREI in Aramaic denotes the "forearm" or power of action. (Chidushi HaRim). Moses had to overcome the negative forces in thought and action before the Land could be conquered.
This account is a literal one and meant to be taken into literally. At the same time all of the above names have meanings and can be taken as symbolic of forces and the whole thing can ALSO be understood on an allegorical mystical or philosophical level.
These mystical-spiritual inbterpretations do not contradict the simple lieral meaning(which is what we concentrate upon) but add to it and complement our understanding of it.


[Deuteronomy 1:5] ON THIS SIDE JORDAN, IN THE LAND OF MOAB, BEGAN MOSES TO DECLARE THIS LAW, SAYING,
 
[Deuteronomy 1:6] THE LORD OUR GOD SPAKE UNTO US IN HOREB, SAYING, YE HAVE DWELT LONG ENOUGH IN   THIS MOUNT:   
"Horeb" is another name for Mount Sinai in Hebrew. The Israelites received the Torah on Mount Sinai.
 
 [Deuteronomy 1:7] TURN YOU, AND TAKE YOUR JOURNEY, AND GO TO THE MOUNT OF THE AMORITES, AND UNTO ALL THE PLACES NIGH THEREUNTO, IN THE PLAIN, IN THE HILLS, AND IN THE VALE, AND IN THE SOUTH, AND BY THE SEA SIDE, TO THE LAND OF THE CANAANITES, AND UNTO LEBANON, UNTO THE GREAT RIVER, THE RIVER EUPHRATES.
All of Lebanon, all of Syria, right up to the Euphrates River belongs to Israel.

 [Deuteronomy 1:8] BEHOLD, I HAVE SET THE LAND BEFORE YOU: GO IN AND POSSESS THE LAND WHICH THE LORD SWARE UNTO YOUR FATHERS, ABRAHAM, ISAAC, AND JACOB, TO GIVE UNTO THEM AND TO THEIR SEED AFTER  THEM.
To their seed after them forever, as an inalienable possession.
 
[Deuteronomy 1:9] AND I SPAKE UNTO YOU AT THAT TIME, SAYING, I AM NOT ABLE TO BEAR YOU MYSELF ALONE:
 
[Deuteronomy 1:10] THE LORD YOUR GOD HATH MULTIPLIED YOU, AND, BEHOLD, YE ARE THIS DAY AS THE STARS OF HEAVEN FOR MULTITUDE.
At that time they numbered 600,000 plus men between the ages of 20 and 60 plus women and children and elder. This was a population of at least 3 million. There is also an opinion that every tribe except Levi practiced polygamy at that time and this would have meant a much larger number.

[Deuteronomy 1:11] (THE LORD GOD OF YOUR FATHERS MAKE YOU A THOUSAND TIMES SO MANY MORE AS YE  ARE, AND BLESS YOU, AS HE HATH PROMISED YOU!)
Colbert ("Bert") Bryan first pointed out to us that it was prophesied that the number of Israelites as it then was would multiplied a thousand times over. They were then ca. 3 million so that would mean ca. 3000 million!
At present we do not know exactly how many the descendants of Israel meaning the Ten Tribes , Jews, and descendants of Jews who are not aware of it, number but it could be a great many and in the past we have tentatively suggested several hundred million!


[Deuteronomy 1:12] HOW CAN I MYSELF ALONE BEAR YOUR CUMBRANCE, AND YOUR BURDEN, AND YOUR STRIFE?
The Hebrews were a quarrelsome squabbling people: Everyone standing on his own rights and engaging in litigation. All this was on the shoulders of Moses who took every case to heart.
 
[Deuteronomy 1:13] TAKE YOU WISE MEN, AND UNDERSTANDING, AND KNOWN AMONG YOUR TRIBES, AND I WILL MAKE THEM RULERS OVER YOU.
Delegate authority.
 
[Deuteronomy 1:14] AND YE ANSWERED ME, AND SAID, THE THING WHICH THOU HAST SPOKEN IS GOOD FOR US TO DO.
 
[Deuteronomy 1:15] SO I TOOK THE CHIEF OF YOUR TRIBES, WISE MEN, AND KNOWN, AND MADE THEM HEADS OVER YOU, CAPTAINS OVER THOUSANDS, AND CAPTAINS OVER HUNDREDS, AND CAPTAINS OVER FIFTIES, AND CAPTAINS OVER TENS, AND OFFICERS AMONG YOUR TRIBES.
The ancient pagan Anglo-Saxons (who conquered England and settled there) also divided themselves into tens, fifties, hundreds, and thousands.
 
I personally feel a sympathy for the Anglo-Saxons.  John Hulley, a fellow historian and personal friend of mine, however has claimed that the Celts, Vikings, and Normans who also all settled in Britain were far more important. Recently studies have strengthened the case of Hulley and have tended to claim that most people of Britain descend from the "Celticised" natives and that the Anglo-Saxons were a small minority who conquered the land and imposed their language. The claim is that the Belgae who had settled in southeast England in Celtic times had already introduced a Germanicization  of language and culture before the Angles and Saxons came.  There may be something in this but I doubt it. The new Anglo-Saxon patterns of settlement, culture,  and customs were too different and too widespread not to imply colonization of the conquered land by large numbers.

[Deuteronomy 1:16] AND I CHARGED YOUR JUDGES AT THAT TIME, SAYING, HEAR THE CAUSES BETWEEN YOUR BRETHREN, AND JUDGE RIGHTEOUSLY BETWEEN EVERY MAN AND HIS BROTHER, AND THE STRANGER THAT IS WITH HIM.
The "STRANGER" is to be respected and treated equally. This does not necessarily mean that the land is to be turned over to masses of newcomers of entirely different origin and values. The STRANGER was an exception.
 
[Deuteronomy 1:17] YE SHALL NOT RESPECT PERSONS IN JUDGMENT; BUT YE SHALL HEAR THE SMALL AS WELL AS THE  GREAT; YE SHALL NOT BE AFRAID OF THE FACE OF MAN; FOR THE JUDGMENT IS GOD'S: AND THE CAUSE THAT IS  TOO HARD FOR YOU, BRING IT UNTO ME, AND I WILL HEAR IT.
Everyone was to be equal before the Law. This is what Moses taught. It was always there in the Bible. Not until the French and American Revolutions did this principle become widely accepted amongst civilized peoples. It is interesting that the French and American Revolutions began a rethinking about man and government and human rights. One was began by descendants of Reuben the natural first-born and the other by descendants of Joseph who received the rights of the first-born instead of Reuben.
 
[Deuteronomy 1:18] AND I COMMANDED YOU AT THAT TIME ALL THE THINGS WHICH YE SHOULD DO.
They were commanded then to do these things forever. In principle the Law was given for all time. The Ten Tribes may for now be considered technically "Gentiles" and not obligated by the Law but this will change in the future.
REMEMBER YE THE LAW OF MOSES MY SERVANT, WHICH I COMMANDED UNTO HIM IN
HOREB FOR ALL ISRAEL, WITH THE STATUTES AND JUDGMENTS [Malachi 4:4].    
 
[Deuteronomy 1:19] AND WHEN WE DEPARTED FROM HOREB, WE WENT THROUGH ALL THAT GREAT AND TERRIBLE WILDERNESS, WHICH YE SAW BY THE WAY OF THE MOUNTAIN OF THE AMORITES, AS THE LORD OUR GOD COMMANDED US; AND WE CAME TO KADESHBARNEA.             
 
[Deuteronomy 1:20] AND I SAID UNTO YOU, YE ARE COME UNTO THE MOUNTAIN OF THE AMORITES, WHICH THE  LORD OUR GOD DOTH GIVE UNTO US.
In the Bible the Amorites are largely linked with the region east of the Jordan River. Amorites were also found west of the Jordan. The whole region of the Land of Israel was known as "Amuru" or land of the Amorites to Foreigners even after the Israelites conquered and settled the Land. Israelites were also referred to as "Amorites" by  foreigners. The Ten Tribes were exiled and became associated with the Cimmerians and Scythians. The King of the Cimmerians was later referred to by the Assyrians as "King of Amurru". This indicates a connection with Israel. We discussed this at length in our book "Lost Israelite Identity".

"Brit-Am" were the ones who first published this information. King Solomon said: Let a stranger praise you and not your own mouth.
LET ANOTHER MAN PRAISE THEE, AND NOT
THINE OWN MOUTH; A STRANGER, AND NOT THINE OWN LIPS [Proverbs 27:2].                     
 
[Deuteronomy 1:21] BEHOLD, THE LORD THY GOD HATH SET THE LAND BEFORE THEE: GO UP AND POSSESS IT, AS   THE LORD GOD OF THY FATHERS HATH SAID UNTO THEE; FEAR NOT, NEITHER BE DISCOURAGED.
Do not fear. We are commanded to conquer and settle the whole of the Land of Israel from the Nile to the Euphrates. Ephraimites who wish to live in the Land of Israel should consider taking over regions not being settled by Judah such as Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan.

It may be worth pointing out that the UK (dominated by Ephraim) was beeen traditionally the protector of Jordan. On several occasions the UK in the past intervened on behalf of Jordan to the point of threatening intervention against the State of Israel.
On the one hand such attitudes against the Jews of Judah reflect treachery against the Israelite nation and a dastardly streak of non-Israelite tendencies. On the other hand it may also to some degree reflect an instinctive jealousy and some kind of recognition that the region east of the Jordan may ultimately belong to them.
Britain helped the Jewish settlement in Palestine which lead to the State of Israel. Britain also helped Israel on many occasions. The possession of the Atom Bomb by Israel is in part thanks to British connivance. Both Britain and Israel prefer to downplay the fact of British assistance and in stead stress periods of hostility between each other that also existed and must be owned up to, e.g.

In the 1940s, Britain secretly advocated the creation of a Greater Syrian state that would secure Britain preferential status in military, economic and cultural matters, in return for putting a complete halt to Jewish ambition in Palestine. France and the United states opposed British hegemony in the region, which eventually lead to the creation of Israel.[1]

Similarly in Biblical Times Reuben was located in Gilead and Bashan. We identifiy Reuben as part of the French and in the recent past France had strong interests in Syria and Lebanon. France once ruled over Syria (1918-1943). France still has a strong interest in the Middle East. For a good time France was very pro-Israel and helped Israel arm itself and develop economically. In recent years (and especially at present) however France has become pro-Arab.

[Deuteronomy 1:22] AND YE CAME NEAR UNTO ME EVERY ONE OF YOU, AND SAID, WE WILL SEND MEN BEFORE  US, AND THEY SHALL SEARCH US OUT THE LAND, AND BRING US WORD AGAIN BY WHAT WAY WE MUST GO UP,  AND INTO WHAT CITIES WE SHALL COME.
 
[Deuteronomy 1:23] AND THE SAYING PLEASED ME WELL: AND I TOOK TWELVE MEN OF YOU, ONE OF A TRIBE:
 
[Deuteronomy 1:24] AND THEY TURNED AND WENT UP INTO THE MOUNTAIN, AND CAME UNTO THE VALLEY OF ESHCOL, AND SEARCHED IT OUT.
 
[Deuteronomy 1:25] AND THEY TOOK OF THE FRUIT OF THE LAND IN THEIR HANDS, AND BROUGHT IT DOWN UNTO US, AND BROUGHT US WORD AGAIN, AND SAID, IT IS A GOOD LAND WHICH THE LORD OUR GOD DOTH GIVE US.
 
[Deuteronomy 1:26] NOTWITHSTANDING YE WOULD NOT GO UP, BUT REBELLED AGAINST THE COMMANDMENT OF THE LORD YOUR GOD:      
 
[Deuteronomy 1:27] AND YE MURMURED IN YOUR TENTS, AND SAID, BECAUSE THE LORD HATED US, HE HATH BROUGHT US FORTH OUT OF THE LAND OF EGYPT, TO DELIVER US INTO THE HAND OF THE AMORITES, TO DESTROY US.
 
[Deuteronomy 1:28] WHITHER SHALL WE GO UP? OUR BRETHREN HAVE DISCOURAGED OUR HEART, SAYING, THE  PEOPLE IS GREATER AND TALLER THAN WE; THE CITIES ARE GREAT AND WALLED UP TO HEAVEN; AND MOREOVER  WE HAVE SEEN THE SONS OF THE ANAKIMS THERE.
There were giants in the land who built mighty fortified cities.
 
[Deuteronomy 1:29] THEN I SAID UNTO YOU, DREAD NOT, NEITHER BE AFRAID OF THEM.
 
[Deuteronomy 1:30] THE LORD YOUR GOD WHICH GOETH BEFORE YOU, HE SHALL FIGHT FOR YOU, ACCORDING TO ALL THAT HE DID FOR YOU IN EGYPT BEFORE YOUR EYES;
 
[Deuteronomy 1:31] AND IN THE WILDERNESS, WHERE THOU HAST SEEN HOW THAT THE LORD THY GOD BARE  THEE, AS A MAN DOTH BEAR HIS SON, IN ALL THE WAY THAT YE WENT, UNTIL YE CAME INTO THIS PLACE.
God still bears us as a father bears his son.
 
[Deuteronomy 1:32] YET IN THIS THING YE DID NOT BELIEVE THE LORD YOUR GOD,
 
[Deuteronomy 1:33] WHO WENT IN THE WAY BEFORE YOU, TO SEARCH YOU OUT A PLACE TO PITCH YOUR TENTS IN, IN FIRE BY NIGHT, TO SHEW YOU BY WHAT WAY YE SHOULD GO, AND IN A CLOUD BY DAY.    
 
[Deuteronomy 1:34] AND THE LORD HEARD THE VOICE OF YOUR WORDS, AND WAS WROTH, AND SWARE, SAYING,
 
[Deuteronomy 1:35] SURELY THERE SHALL NOT ONE OF THESE MEN OF THIS EVIL GENERATION SEE THAT GOOD LAND, WHICH I SWARE TO GIVE UNTO YOUR FATHERS.
This whole affair of the spies is repeated here (says the Sefat Emet) since the sins of one generation must be atoned for by another.
The spies brought back a bad report about the Land on the 9th day of  the Month of Av. On this day the first and second Temples were destroyed.
We are commanded to make spiritual and physical efforts to rebuild the Temple.
Every good deed we perform is one more step towards rebuilding the Temple.
Similarly our forefathers (in Judah and Joseph) split away from each other. It is our duty to attempt to rectify that action.
 
[Deuteronomy 1:36] SAVE CALEB THE SON OF JEPHUNNEH; HE SHALL SEE IT, AND TO HIM WILL I GIVE THE LAND THAT HE HATH TRODDEN UPON, AND TO HIS CHILDREN, BECAUSE HE HATH WHOLLY FOLLOWED THE LORD.
 
[Deuteronomy 1:37] ALSO THE LORD WAS ANGRY WITH ME FOR YOUR SAKES, SAYING, THOU ALSO SHALT NOT GO IN THITHER.
 
[Deuteronomy 1:38] BUT JOSHUA THE SON OF NUN, WHICH STANDETH BEFORE THEE, HE SHALL GO IN THITHER:  ENCOURAGE HIM: FOR HE SHALL CAUSE ISRAEL TO INHERIT IT.
Calev was from Judah, Joshua from Ephraim.

[Deuteronomy 1:39] MOREOVER YOUR LITTLE ONES, WHICH YE SAID SHOULD BE A PREY, AND YOUR CHILDREN, WHICH IN THAT DAY HAD NO KNOWLEDGE BETWEEN GOOD AND EVIL, THEY SHALL GO IN THITHER, AND UNTO THEM WILL I GIVE IT, AND THEY SHALL POSSESS IT.
 
[Deuteronomy 1:40] BUT AS FOR YOU, TURN YOU, AND TAKE YOUR JOURNEY INTO THE WILDERNESS BY THE WAY OF THE RED SEA.              
 
[Deuteronomy 1:41] THEN YE ANSWERED AND SAID UNTO ME, WE HAVE SINNED AGAINST THE LORD, WE WILL GO UP AND FIGHT, ACCORDING TO ALL THAT THE LORD OUR GOD COMMANDED US. AND WHEN YE HAD GIRDED ON EVERY MAN HIS WEAPONS OF WAR, YE WERE READY TO GO UP INTO THE HILL.
 
[Deuteronomy 1:42] AND THE LORD SAID UNTO ME, SAY UNTO THEM. GO NOT UP, NEITHER FIGHT; FOR I AM NOT AMONG YOU; LEST YE BE SMITTEN BEFORE YOUR ENEMIES.
 
[Deuteronomy 1:43] SO I SPAKE UNTO YOU; AND YE WOULD NOT HEAR, BUT REBELLED AGAINST THE COMMANDMENT OF THE LORD, AND WENT PRESUMPTUOUSLY UP INTO THE HILL.
 
[Deuteronomy 1:44] AND THE AMORITES, WHICH DWELT IN THAT MOUNTAIN, CAME OUT AGAINST YOU, AND CHASED YOU, AS BEES DO, AND DESTROYED YOU IN SEIR, EVEN UNTO HORMAH.
If they had have listened wasps or wasp-like insects would have driven out their enemies. Because they did not listen their enemies chased them like bees.
So too we should always be careful to do the will of the Almighty and not let any apparent success of our won deceive us.

 
[Deuteronomy 1:45] AND YE RETURNED AND WEPT BEFORE THE LORD; BUT THE LORD WOULD NOT HEARKEN  TO YOUR VOICE, NOR GIVE EAR UNTO YOU.
 
[Deuteronomy 1:46] SO YE ABODE IN KADESH MANY DAYS, ACCORDING UNTO THE DAYS THAT YE ABODE THERE.
 
[Deuteronomy 2:1] THEN WE TURNED, AND TOOK OUR JOURNEY INTO THE WILDERNESS BY THE WAY OF THE RED SEA, AS THE LORD SPAKE UNTO ME: AND WE COMPASSED MOUNT SEIR MANY DAYS.

[Deuteronomy 2:2] AND THE LORD SPAKE UNTO ME, SAYING,
 
[Deuteronomy 2:3] YE HAVE COMPASSED THIS MOUNTAIN LONG ENOUGH: TURN YOU NORTHWARD.
 
[Deuteronomy 2:4] AND COMMAND THOU THE PEOPLE, SAYING, YE ARE TO PASS THROUGH THE COAST OF YOUR BRETHREN THE CHILDREN OF ESAU, WHICH DWELL IN SEIR; AND THEY SHALL BE AFRAID OF YOU: TAKE YE GOOD  HEED UNTO YOURSELVES THEREFORE:          
 
[Deuteronomy 2:5] MEDDLE NOT WITH THEM; FOR I WILL NOT GIVE YOU OF THEIR LAND, NO, NOT SO MUCH AS A FOOT   BREADTH; BECAUSE I HAVE GIVEN MOUNT SEIR UNTO ESAU FOR A POSSESSION.
 
Afghanistan
 
We consider the Afghans-Pathans to possibly be an offshoot of Esau along with descendants of Kedar, Ishmael, and others.
They should be left alone as much as possible.
The Israelites were commanded not to meddle with Edom when they were about to enter the Land of Canaan. This only applied at that time and only under specific circumstances. Nevertheless the principle can teach us something:


[Deuteronomy 2:5] MEDDLE NOT WITH THEM; FOR I WILL NOT GIVE YOU OF THEIR LAND, NO, NOT SO MUCH AS A FOOT  BREADTH; BECAUSE I HAVE GIVEN MOUNT SEIR UNTO ESAU FOR A POSSESSION.

We suggest that this should be the US-UK policy regarding the Afghan-Pathans at present.
Have them once again ban the growing of the poppy seed, turn over or expel all Al-
Quaeda and other international terrorists
and then leave them alone. Let them wipe each other out or do whatever else they wish to.
Historically invaders of their land have not had much success.   

 
We would suggest that if anything it is more important to take control of Pakistan than Afghanistan. Concerning Afghanistan itself, we should endeavor to come to terms with them,  stop Poppy seed cultivation,  stop international terrorist links, leave the country.
The USA entered Afghanistan  after 9/11. It did so however by using the Northern
Aliance. This consisted of Tajiks and others who represented the majority of the population and who for centuries had been oppressed by the Afghan-Pathan rulers.
The Afghan-
Pathans formed the Taliban super extremist Moslems. The Taliban had abolished the growing of poppy from which is produced much of the world supply of opium and heroin.
After the Taliban had been deposed, corrupt warlords took over, re-introduced the growing of poppy seed, the country began falling apart, the Taliban began making a come-back, and US forces got sucked into the morass.
It now seems unlikely that the Taliban left to their own devices would succeed in once again taking control of the country since it has lost some support amongst the Afghans-
Pathans, and the Tajiks and other minorities have grown stronger.

If Afghanistan is indeed a minor offshoot of Edom it is only a small part of the Power of Esau that controls the ruling elites of non-Israelite Europe as well as Japan and elsewhere in Asia.

The Midrash About Jacob and Esau in the Future

Midrash, Devorim Rabah 1;20:

#Rabbi Shmuel bar Nachman said: When Esau met together with Yaacov, Esau said, 'Yaacov my brother, let us go forward together in this world.
[In Genesis it says AND HE [Esau] SAID, LET US TAKE OUR JOURNEY, AND LET US GO, AND I WILL GO BEFORE THEE [Genesis 33:12].  The KJ translates it as Esau saying I WILL GO BEFORE THEE. The Hebrew, Ve-aylca-ce-negdaca,  may preferably be understood to mean, I WILL GO ALONGSIDE YOU. This is how the Sages understood it and what the Midrash is referring to. Esau offered to progress parallel with and in tandem to Yaacov.]

What does this mean?
He said, I have first to give rise to
HANANIAH, MISHAEL, AND AZARIAH [Daniel 1:6], CHILDREN IN WHOM WAS NO BLEMISH [Daniel 1:4].
Alternately [i.e. another explanation],
He said,  I have first to give rise to the King Messiah, of whom it is written,

What does the expression "UNTIL I COME UNTO MY LORD UNTO
SEIR" mean? When will he fulfill it and go to Esau?

CAPHTORIMS were apparently part of the Philistines.
Nachmanides (Ramban) equates them with the HiviChori (Horites) and Rephaim as well as part of the later Philistines.
Avims in Hebrew is Avi in the singular and Avim in the plural.
Nachmanides points out that, "Names retain their meaning while switching their sounds". For example Zerach (ZERAH  from the Tribe of Simeon, Numbers 26:13) is also referred to as  Tsochar (transliterated as ZOHAR, Exodus 6:15). Zerach and Tsochar both connote Shining Light.

Iben Ezra (on Obadiah) says that Canaanites fleeing from Joshua settled in Germany. In Rabbinical Writings the Slavic peoples of Bohemia (Czechia) and later the Slavs in general were referred to as Canaanites. A Canaanite presence in Europe should be looked into. The Bronze Age implements and art work of  the Balkans and of Scandinavia is almost identical to that of the Ancient Hittite and other Canaanite peoples. The same would apply to North Germany.
The Rise of Bronze Age Society by
Kristian Kristiansen and Thomas B. Larson (UK, 2007) provides hundreds of illustrated examples of such similarities. We attribute the parallelisms to the migrations of Israelites but other explanations are possible.

Different sources indicate that Canaanites settled in Africa and that the name Ghana (Guinea) is itself derived from an Egyptian pronunciation (
Ghanan) of the term Canaan.

Jair is Yair. This person fathered an important clan. They made conquests up to the Euphrates and beyond it and were referred to in  Mesopotamian records as the IARI. Where was Gilead?
We know it was east of the Jordan and that to its north was the
Bashan.
Apparently the application of  both the terms Gilead and
Bashan could move with time.
In Aramaic
Bashan became Bathan and we find Bathan Regio (Kingdom of Bashan) and Bathanaei (People of Bashan) on the Maps of Ptolemy (as illustrated in our work The Tribes p.105) in the far north of Israel close the junction of the Chabor (Khabur) and Euphrates Rivers.

Mair Arzi (Yad Le Mair Arzi, Tel Aviv, 1988, pp.15-16) locates Mount Gilead in an area referred to as EL GALLAD between Palmyra and Homs (based on an official  French Map of the levant coordinates  345485) on the banks of the Euphrates. He also  quotes Binyamin of Toledo who located it northeast of Aleppo in Syria.These identifications seem to far to the north but the People of Yair (IAARI, etc) from Machir of Manasseh according to Mesopotamian (Assyrian and Babylonian etc) reports were to be found in this area.

Haftara - Isaiah (Yeshayahu) 1:1-27
Isaiah begins his prophecy (1:1) from the viewpoint of (a) Judah and Jerusalem. The People of Israel are Children of the Almighty but they do not act like it but are a sinful nation (1:4). They are physically and ecologically suffering for their sins (1:7). Alien foreigners are taking over (1:7). If God did not have mercy upon us we would be destroyed altogether (1:10). Your prayers and worship will not be accepted unless you act righteously (1:12-16) meaning especially the practice of social justice with protection and care for the vulnerable (1:17). If we repent God will forgive us and show us favor (1:18-19) but if not violence will overtake us (1:20). Violence, fraud and graft are among our major offences (1:21-23). This will change. The "bad eggs" among us will be removed (1:24-25, 28).
Righteous rulers (judges) and counselors will come forth and show us the way to redemption (1:26-27).
