1. Question About Women Singing.

Dear Mr. Davidy,
Recently I came across an article on your website about women not being allowed to sing among the ultra Orthodox Jews.
I was shocked to see this because I grew up in an off shoot of The World Wide Church of God and we usually had special music and sometimes it was sung by women. What's going on here? I think it sounds horrible that women aren't allowed to sing, especially since God gave them a voice box and voices, plus I'm a woman and I like to sing.
Here's my question though, is there any thing in the Bible that supports women not being allowed to sing??? If so, can you show where it is?

Sincerely,
Charity

ps: I enjoy some of your articles posted on your website. Good Job.

Brit-Am Reply:

Apparently the article gave the wrong impression.
Religious Women are allowed to sing and actually sing a lot.
They have special concerts and highly professional performances only for females.
Amongst the Ultra-Orthodox however there is an opinion that men should not listen to women singing other than their wives.
There are those who say that men and women singing together is permitted for males to hear since the voice of the women is combined with a male one.
This applies especially to singing religious songs that have no erotic overtones.
It was the practice amongst Jews of Germany for all members of the family (boys and girls) to sing religious songs together on Shabbat.
They quoted from Rabbi Shimshon Raphael Hirsch and Rabbi Hildesheimer.
There are also those who say that the prohibition does not apply to recordings etc.
This is a complicated issue. I have never gone into the subject and know nothing about it.

The Bible mentions female singers:
2-Chronicles 35:25
2-Samuel 19:36
Ecclesiastes 2:28

There seem to be differences of opinion.
For a brief discussion in Hebrew see:
http://he.wikipedia.org/wiki/
%D7%A7%D7%95%D7%9C_%D7%91%D7
%90%D7%99%D7%A9%D7%94_%
D7%A2%D7%A8%D7%95%D7%95%D7%94

At all events,  it is an internal Jewish issue. It should not be a subject for consideration on a forum such as our own which is dedicated to other matters.
The point of the article however was that if Ultra-Orthodox Jews serve in the Israeli Army then their religious sensibilities should not be offended.
If they feel that being forced to hearing the girl soldiers sing songs at a public assembly offends their religious beliefs, why force them?
If you were a singer would you want other people to be forced to hear you, especially if they considered it against their religion?
I would not.
What kind of behavior is this?
Prominent officials of  the USA Administration certainly should not involve themselves!

The case in question concerned 3 (only 3) religious Jewish soldiers (officer cadets) of the type who frequently risk their lives in the service of the nation.
They were (against previous agreements and assurances) being forced to listen to a choir of girl soldiers at a public assembly.
They walked out.
That is all.
They did not hurt or offend anybody.
They were the ones being offended.
The whole Media apparatus created an uproar.
[ If they had have committed a real crime much less would probably have been heard of it.]
Women public figures would not leave it alone.
[I often listen to Knesset debates while I work and several leading female MKs spoke about it with much vehemence.]
The incident is being used as an excuse to attack the Jewish religious community in general.
The US Secretary of State raised the issue and used it as an excuse to criticize Israel.
Good old Hillary was coming to the rescue of the poor oppressed Jewish ladies!
[Actually Ultra-Orthodox Jewish women, statistically,  have the highest levels of satisfaction with their roles in life.
They are often quite independent and accomplished and could probably teach even Hillary a thing or two!
See the Brit-Am Commentary to [2-Samuel 19:35]
http://britam.org/2samuel-19.html]

What is the world coming to?
When I was doing training in the IDF one of the soldiers put an indecent picture of a girl on the wall.
He was asked to take it down and he refused.
A religious soldier stepped forward and tore it off.
The other (mostly non-religious soldiers) discussed the matter and decided that the religious soldier was justified.
You do not have to needlessly offend people.
Live and let live but remember that Life is a two-way street.
God bless you
Yair Davidiy

2. Question About Afro-Americans and  Possibly Others in Relation to Joseph in the End Times.

Hi!

In your summary, you mention that the Africans were to be transported to serve the descendants of Joseph. Please explain how you came up with this. I have been trying to figure out where they fit in.

Thanks!
Pamela

Brit-Am Reply:
Shalom,
This does not sound exactly like anything we said though we may have been so understood.
What summary are you referring to?
We speak of this matter in our work,
"Joseph - The Israelite Destiny of America"
http://britam.org/bkjoseph.html

First of all we are against color prejudice.
See:
The Black Woman
Color Prejudice Forbidden
http://www.britam.org/CushiteWoman.html

Secondly a distinction should be made between our various enunciations.
We are engaged in research and discovery.
Much of what we say is straightforward, hard and fast simple truth.
Here and there however we also explore possibilities that appear highly probable but may not always be certain.

The concept of Black people from Cush being brought to America in chains by Joseph is derived from the figure of Cyrus.
See:
Isaiah -Chapter 45
http://britam.org/isaiah/chap-forty-five.html

Cyrus was the king of Persia who allowed the Jews to return to Judah from their Exile in Babylonia. Isaiah prophesied about this naming Cyrus by name.
An analysis of Prophecy in general and of this one in particular shows that an additional message was contained within the Cyrus Prophecy. This pertained to the future Messiah son of Joseph destined leader of the Ten tribes and to Joseph in the Latter Days in general.

Isaiah 45:
14 Thus says the LORD:
The labor of Egypt and merchandise of Cush
And of the Sabeans, men of stature,
Shall come over to you, and they shall be yours;
They shall walk behind you,
They shall come over in chains;
And they shall bow down to you.
They will make supplication to you, saying, ?Surely God is in you,
And there is no other;
There is no other God.
15 Truly You are God, who hide Yourself,
O God of Israel, the Savior!

This message concerns the End Times. The Ten Tribes will return and repent. They shall come back to acknowledging the God of Israel.
The Afro-Americans will also play a role in this and acknowledge that Joseph and Israel are the Chosen People.
They will have previously been brought over in chains from Africa (Cush and Saba).
India is also included in the concept of Cush and the riches of India will also have accrued to Joseph.

3. Question About the term "Gentile".  Israelites Called Themselves Hebrews!
Trevor wrote:

Hi Yair,

One question.Do the jewish nation call everbody outside of being a jew, a gentile. The reason I ask this is because I have heard 2 versions.

The one version is:
A gentile is any person that is not an Israelite,ie: the people of the heathen or pagan nation.

The second version is:
It has always comes from the jewish people writing in magazines newspapers or emails,ie:meaning any person that is not jewish.

I tend to believe the first version because [the ALMIGHTY] chose the Israelite people as His people/children as mentioned so many times in the O.T. He never once  differentiated between the house of Judah and the house of Israel, but called both of them His people/children.

Bless you

trevor

Brit-Am Reply:
The term Gentile is from the Latin. It means people.
In Hebrew we have words like "Am" connoting people in general.
"Goi" meaning people as a distinct entity.
"La-oom" meaning people in the sense of nation.

These three terms may be applied to either Israelites or non-Israelites depending on the context.

In Colloquial Hebrew and in Yiddish "goi" means non-Jew and equals the term Gentile as commonly understood.

The Ancient Israelites appear to have referred to themselves as Hebrews.

cf. Jonah 1:9
So he said to them, ?I am a Hebrew; and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.?

The Ancient so-called Celtic peoples of the British Isles and the West also called themselves Iberi meaning Hebrews.

Second, it is violently opposed.
Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.
