Psalms 109
TO THE CHIEF MUSICAIN, A PSALM OF DAVID
Hebrew: "LeMenastaich" usually translated as  TO THE CHIEF MUSICAIN may also be understood to mean. "TO HIM WHO GRANTS VICTORY".  This is how S.R. Hirsch always translates it.

[Psalms 109:1] HOLD NOT THY PEACE, O GOD OF MY PRAISE;
David asks God to intercede on his behalf and/or  for the sake of those (in this case Judah as a whole) whom he embodies.

[Psalms 109:2] FOR THE MOUTH OF THE WICKED AND THE MOUTH OF THE DECEITFUL ARE OPENED  AGAINST ME: THEY HAVE SPOKEN AGAINST ME WITH A LYING TONGUE.
Everyone all around are telling lies about me. They speaking with deceit as if clothing their false claims in "facts" or "concern for others" while their real motivation is hatred of me.

[Psalms 109:3] THEY COMPASSED ME ABOUT ALSO WITH WORDS OF HATRED; AND FOUGHT AGAINST  ME WITHOUT A CAUSE.

[Psalms 109:4] FOR MY LOVE THEY ARE MY ADVERSARIES: BUT I GIVE MYSELF UNTO PRAYER.
I came to them with peaceful intentions. I was prepared to dwell at ease with them for our mutual benefit.  I wished them well and would have helped them but they hated me. I pray to God for there is no other recourse. God will save me.

[Psalms 109:5] AND THEY HAVE REWARDED ME EVIL FOR GOOD, AND HATRED FOR MY LOVE.
The Jews in Exile were nearly always super-patriots and gave much for the lands they lived in.  In Germany they were more German than the Germans and had a higher relative proportion of military decorations in WW1.  In most cases this love of their adopted "fatherland" was rejected and even strongly resented by the "natives".

[Psalms 109:6] SET THOU A WICKED MAN OVER HIM: AND LET SATAN STAND AT HIS RIGHT HAND.
Satan represents the Power of Adversity. In other words let everything he tries come undone.  Anyone who has ever had a string of bad luck knows just how potent this malediction can be.
The thing is that everything has a reason even if we are unaware of it and everything can come to an end. Even bad luck can come to an end.
We should always continue to believe in the Almighty, pray, and do what we can. Sooner or later the Almighty will save us and help us.  Even if HE does not for reasons of HIS own we at least will not be ashamed or be less ashamed when the time comes for Judgement.  Someone who does not believe in the Almighty or believes yet still acts in an evil manner will experience the opposite effects as the next verse tells us.

[Psalms 109:7] WHEN HE SHALL BE JUDGED, LET HIM BE CONDEMNED: AND LET HIS PRAYER BECOME SIN.

[Psalms 109:8] LET HIS DAYS BE FEW; AND LET ANOTHER TAKE HIS OFFICE.
We all have a task in this world.  We are not always aware of it. It is a blessing to be given such a task and have it made known unto you.  To have someone else do what you should be doing  compounds whatever other dissatisfactions life may deal us.

[Psalms 109:9] LET HIS CHILDREN BE FATHERLESS, AND HIS WIFE A WIDOW.
All these curses are relating to a specific enemy and to those who deal in an especially nefarious manner. Even so, we may still regard them as threats of what (God forbid) may befall us if we deal wrongfully with others. Sometimes it may not be because of us but because of our ancestors and we have "merited" to wipe the slate clean for them. Whatever the case we should always maintain our faith in the Almighty.

[Psalms 109:10] LET HIS CHILDREN BE CONTINUALLY VAGABONDS, AND BEG: LET THEM SEEK THEIR BREAD ALSO OUT OF THEIR DESOLATE PLACES.

[Psalms 109:11] LET THE EXTORTIONER CATCH ALL THAT HE HATH; AND LET THE STRANGERS SPOIL HIS  LABOUR.
These imprecations are not only curses. They are also warning to be taken to heart and treated with the utmost seriousness.
EXTORTIONER. In Hebrew "nosheh" meaning creditor.  Avoid debts. Avoid paying interest. Especially keep away from illegal or semi-legal money lenders etc who will suck you dry and take everything you have.

[Psalms 109:12] LET THERE BE NONE TO EXTEND MERCY UNTO HIM: NEITHER LET THERE BE ANY TO  FAVOUR HIS FATHERLESS CHILDREN.
Children benefit or suffer due to their parents.  We should remember this.

[Psalms 109:13] LET HIS POSTERITY BE CUT OFF; AND IN THE GENERATION FOLLOWING LET THEIR NAME BE BLOTTED OUT.
These are very strong imprecations to call down on anybody.
It is not for nothing that the expression "to call [somebody] names you would not read in the Bible" connotes names of extraordinary  venom.

[Psalms 109:14] LET THE INIQUITY OF HIS FATHERS BE REMEMBERED WITH THE LORD; AND LET NOT THE SIN OF HIS MOTHER BE BLOTTED OUT.
Some of  us had forefathers who were not always paragons of virtue.  This cannot be helped. We also probably had ancestors who were very good people.  A person is not a prisoners of his antecedents. Neither can he really on their accumulated virtues to save himself.  When we do bad then it happens that beyond a certain point the transgressions of those who went before us are liable to be taken into account against us. And vice-versa.
There is another phenomenon and that is of a lineage that is consistently evil.   In many cases a really bad person also had really bad parents and grandparents.
In East Germany today for example there is a great deal of anti-Semitism and Neo-Nazism underneath the surface. Many of those who share such views had fathers and grandfathers who were in the SS.
Even though there are exceptions that should never be ignored a consistent pattern of hereditary nastiness exists.
David asks the Almighty to take into account the evil roots of they who oppress the Jewish people and visit them all n the one who at present is continuing their retrograde practices.

[Psalms 109:15] LET THEM BE BEFORE THE LORD CONTINUALLY, THAT HE MAY CUT OFF THE  MEMORY OF THEM FROM THE EARTH.

[Psalms 109:16] BECAUSE THAT HE REMEMBERED NOT TO SHEW MERCY, BUT PERSECUTED THE POOR AND NEEDY MAN, THAT HE MIGHT EVEN SLAY THE BROKEN IN HEART.
Even when you have a conflict with others you should finish it cleanly.
Do not "rub" it in. Do not put others down just for the sake of it.
This reflects upon yourself.

[Psalms 109:17] AS HE LOVED CURSING, SO LET IT COME UNTO HIM: AS HE DELIGHTED NOT IN  BLESSING, SO LET IT BE FAR FROM HIM.

[Psalms 109:18] AS HE CLOTHED HIMSELF WITH CURSING LIKE AS WITH HIS GARMENT, SO LET IT  COME INTO HIS BOWELS LIKE WATER, AND LIKE OIL INTO HIS BONES.
When somebody has done us wrong it is sometimes hard not to keep thinking about it.
Nevertheless we should be fair. We should not impute blame unfairly.
People in poor health and left too much on their own sometimes develop a state of melancholy and brood about the past.  This can develop into a type of sickness.
It is however curable and with a little effort often easily cured. We should try to maintain our mental and physical health. If we have let them deteriorate we should endeavor to recover them.

[Psalms 109:19] LET IT BE UNTO HIM AS THE GARMENT WHICH COVERETH HIM, AND FOR A GIRDLE   WHEREWITH HE IS GIRDED CONTINUALLY.
People who become accustomed to think ill of others and delight in doing them wrong  invite the same thing to happen to them.

[Psalms 109:20] LET THIS BE THE REWARD OF MINE ADVERSARIES FROM THE LORD, AND OF THEM  THAT SPEAK EVIL AGAINST MY SOUL.

[Psalms 109:21] BUT DO THOU FOR ME, O GOD THE LORD, FOR THY NAME'S SAKE: BECAUSE THY  MERCY IS GOOD, DELIVER THOU ME.

[Psalms 109:22] FOR I AM POOR AND NEEDY, AND MY HEART IS WOUNDED WITHIN ME.

[Psalms 109:23] I AM GONE LIKE THE SHADOW WHEN IT DECLINETH: I AM TOSSED UP AND DOWN  AS THE LOCUST.
Like a grasshopper in the wind I am borne to and fro with great force and have no control over what is happening to me.

[Psalms 109:24] MY KNEES ARE WEAK THROUGH FASTING; AND MY FLESH FAILETH OF FATNESS.
In the past fasting was a means of repentance and of supplication.
Rabbi Avraham HaCohen Kook said that in our time this no longer applies.

[Psalms 109:25] I BECAME ALSO A REPROACH UNTO THEM: WHEN THEY LOOKED UPON ME THE  SHAKED THEIR HEADS.
David himself suffered. He was a cause of reproach. People kept away from him. Nobody likes a loser. Those who suffer from misfortune are often treated like lepers as if others are afraid of being infected.  There is even something to this.  Those who are themselves vulnerable and in precarious positions do not want others to link them with the afflicted.
It takes a strong person to be really able and confidant about helping weaker ones. On the other hand sometimes through helping inner strengths come to expression that bring blessings in other spheres.
It may also be that by helping others when the opportunity to do so arises one averts the same afflictions from befalling oneself.

[Psalms 109:26] HELP ME, O LORD MY GOD: O SAVE ME ACCORDING TO THY MERCY:
We want God to help us according to HIS mercy without regard to our own paucity of merit.

[Psalms 109:27] THAT THEY MAY KNOW THAT THIS IS THY HAND; THAT THOU, LORD, HAST DONE  IT.
We ask God to help us so that it may be clear that our afflictions were from the Almighty for HIS reaons. HE hurt us and HE will cure us.

[Psalms 109:28] LET THEM CURSE, BUT BLESS THOU: WHEN THEY ARISE, LET THEM BE ASHAMED;  BUT LET THY SERVANT REJOICE.
BUT BLESS THOU in Hebrew "Let You GIVE BLESSING".
WHEN THEY ARISE. After we are healed let them realize that they put themselves in a trap. They persecuted us because they thought we were cursed but in reality they were cursing themselves.
Alternately WHEN THEY ARISE may be taken as a hint at a future resurrection and judgement.
See what we have written on this matter, in the Brit-Am Commentary to Daniel chapter twelve, especially Daniel 12:1-3.

[Psalms 109:29] LET MINE ADVERSARIES BE CLOTHED WITH SHAME, AND LET THEM COVER  THEMSELVES WITH THEIR OWN CONFUSION, AS WITH A MANTLE.
When God returns to us, heals and restores us our enemies will be confounded and ashamed.
In effect even when they persecuted us they knew we were blessed and resented it.
There was something lacking in us that enabled them to take advantage of us and hurt us.
Whatever it was will have been cured and we will be where we should have been all along as long as we remain faithful to the Almighty.

[Psalms 109:30] I WILL GREATLY PRAISE THE LORD WITH MY MOUTH; YEA, I WILL PRAISE HIM AMONG THE MULTITUDE.

[Psalms 109:31] FOR HE SHALL STAND AT THE RIGHT HAND OF THE POOR, TO SAVE HIM FROM THOSE  THAT CONDEMN HIS SOUL.
HIS SOUL. Hebrew "nafshoi" from the word "nefesh".
In Hebrew there are two main words often translated into Hebrew as "soul".
Nefesh can also mean life, psyche, mind, physical and conscious being.
Neshamah means "soul" more in the spiritual sense.
