Psalms 119-heh

To Hear a Talk based on the Text below:

(ca. 7 minutes)

HEH
[Psalms 119:33] TEACH ME, O LORD, THE WAY OF THY STATUTES; AND I SHALL KEEP IT UNTO THE END.
Teach me God how to act.
THE END. Hebrew "akev" meaning 'heel" of the foot. This expression implies "unto the end" as the KJ translates it. S.R. Hirsch renders it "unto the utmost".
Daat Mikra gives it a literal explanation as meaning "I will watch my step".
The beauty of the Hebrew Language is that all of these explanations may be correct ones and were what was intended.

[Psalms 119:34] GIVE ME UNDERSTANDING, AND I SHALL KEEP THY LAW; YEA, I SHALL OBSERVE IT  WITH MY WHOLE HEART.
If I understand YOUR COMMANDMENT TO ME I will be able to practice it and keep it as part of my conscious existence. The Almighty can help me gain this understanding.

[Psalms 119:35] MAKE ME TO GO IN THE PATH OF THY COMMANDMENTS; FOR THEREIN DO I DELIGHT.
DO I DELIGHT. Hebrew "Chofasti" also understandeable as saying "for therein do I find the will to live".

[Psalms 119:36] INCLINE MY HEART UNTO THY TESTIMONIES, AND NOT TO COVETOUSNESS.
Let me seek after doing the Will of the Almighty rather than making a major goal out of the maintenance and well-being of my own material existence.  Let me be enabled to do this and do it when I am able.

[Psalms 119:37] TURN AWAY MINE EYES FROM BEHOLDING VANITY; AND QUICKEN THOU ME IN THY WAY.
Give me vitality and enthusiasm to serve YOU. Let me not be lead astray after other matters.
QUICKEN THOU ME IN THY WAY. In the Hebrew it can also be understood to say, THROUGH GOING IN YOUR WAYS GIVE ME LIFE.

[Psalms 119:38] STABLISH THY WORD UNTO THY SERVANT, WHO IS DEVOTED TO THY FEAR.

[Psalms 119:39] TURN AWAY MY REPROACH WHICH I FEAR: FOR THY JUDGMENTS ARE GOOD.
We want to do the Will of the Almighty. We do not want to fail.  We ask God to help us not to fail in doing HIS will and not to fail in general. We will do as well as we can. We might not succeed. We might throw in the towel half way through. Whatever may happen we ask God to help us and that at the least that only good to ourselves and others should result from our efforts.

[Psalms 119:40] BEHOLD, I HAVE LONGED AFTER THY PRECEPTS: QUICKEN ME IN THY RIGHTEOUSNESS.
Keep me alive and invigorated through the truth and righteousness of the Bible. I am eager to understand what God wants me to do.
