Psalm 148

Psalms Chapter 148: All Creation Must Praise the Almighty; Haleluyah!

 [Psalm 148:1] Praise the LORD! [Halalu-Yah]
          Praise the LORD from the heavens;
         Praise Him in the heights!

Rabbi Shimshon Rabbi Shimshon Rafael Hirsch gives a short commentary on this Psalm. He explains it as a call for all aspects of creation and Being to praise the Almighty. This includes everything that is and that is in the process of becoming and all levels of consciousness encompassing the most basic of instincts alongside the loftiest of intellectual appreciations.

Some of the Commentaries on this Psalm indicate
that it hints at the various forces of Existence and how they inter-relate with each other.

The Almighty should be praised. All of creation needs to praise HIM!

 [Psalm 148:2] Praise Him, all His angels;
         Praise Him, all His hosts!

 [Psalm 148:3] Praise Him, sun and moon;
         Praise Him, all you stars of light!

All the forces of nature and everything that is created exists by virtue of HIS will.

 [Psalm 148:4] Praise Him, you heavens of heavens,
         And you waters above the heavens!

[Psalm 148:5] Let them praise the name of the LORD,
         For He commanded and they were created.

[Psalm 148:6] He also established them forever and ever;
         He made a decree which shall not pass away.

[Psalm 148:7] Praise the LORD from the earth,
         You great sea creatures and all the depths;

[Psalm 148:8] Fire and hail, snow and clouds;
         Stormy wind, fulfilling His word;

[Psalm 148:9] Mountains and all hills;
         Fruitful trees and all cedars;

 [Psalm 148:10] Beasts and all cattle;
         Creeping things and flying fowl;

[Psalm 148:11] Kings of the earth and all peoples;
         Princes and all judges of the earth;

[Psalm 148:12] Both young men and maidens;
         Old men and children.

 [Psalm 148:13] Let them praise the name of the LORD,
         For His name alone is exalted;
         His glory is above the earth and heaven.

[Psalm 148:14] And He has exalted the horn of His people,
         The praise of all His saints
         Of the children of Israel,
         A people near to Him.
        Praise the LORD! [Halalu-Yah]

In Hebrew "horn" is Keren which also connotes "radiate". This is transalted as "shone" i.e.

[Exodus 34:29] Now it was so, when Moses came down from Mount Sinai (and the two tablets of the Testimony were in Moses hand when he came down from the mountain), that Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone while he talked with Him.

[Exodus 34:30] So when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him.

We are the People of God. Israel is the Chosen people. The Almighty will restore our self-respect and our national honor in the eyes of others. The honor of Israel is expressed through the praise and righteousness of His saints. In Hebrew the word translated here as "HIS saints" is "Hasidav" from the root "Hasid" (or "Chasid") meaning primarily someone who does acts of loving-kindness.
    The expression above translated as   "The praise of all His saints" could alternatively be rendered,
"Give Praise to those of HIM who do acts of loving-kindness". By virtue of these people the self-respect and national honor of all the Israelite Nations may be elevated.
God enables Israel (i.e. Judah and the Ten Tribes) to shine forth. All of creation depends on us!
Israel has an obligation to all of creation in the same way that everything that exists has a need of and duty towards the Israelite People.

Israel is close to God.
