GIMMEL
[Psalms 119:17] DEAL BOUNTIFULLY WITH THY SERVANT, THAT I MAY LIVE, AND KEEP THY WORD.
These next eight-verses begin with the Hebrew letter "Gimmel".
A lot of wisdom has been uttered concerning the need to remain righteous despite poverty, sickness, and other afflictions. This is all true. Nevertheless we are also all human. God promises that if we go in HIS paths HE will bless us not only in a spiritual sense but also in a physical one. This is true. It is the general rule. People who believe and try to do what they should on the whole are happier. They are better off physically whether from the point of view of family, health, wealth, emotional stability, etc. There are exceptions and even amongst those who are blessed there are points of weakness where the blessing is less apparent.  Or there are stages where the person concerned goes through a tough period. Nevertheless the point remains: Do good and good will come to you. It is easier for a religious person to be thankful to the Almighty when the blessings of the Almighty are felt in the physical realm.  David asks God to help him and bless him, to give him life (which includes a "life") and vitality so that he may serve HIM all the better.
So too, everyone should try to do well for themselves not only for their own sakes and the sake of those dependent on them but also in order to dedicate themselves to the Almighty more completely.

[Psalms 119:18] OPEN THOU MINE EYES, THAT I MAY BEHOLD WONDROUS THINGS OUT OF THY LAW.
The Torah contains great wonders. These are fairly obvious but we often do not see them. The Psalmists asks God to open his eyes to what is before him.

[Psalms 119:19] I AM A STRANGER IN THE EARTH: HIDE NOT THY COMMANDMENTS FROM ME.
A STRANGER: Hebrew "ger" connoting "sojourner".
The sojourner is lonely and lonesome.
This is also true.
In a sense we are all sojourners.
Everyone who follows the path of the Almighty sooner or later realizes that in some sense they are alone. Only God can help us and show us what HE has commanded us.

[Psalms 119:20] MY SOUL BREAKETH FOR THE LONGING THAT IT HATH UNTO THY JUDGMENTS AT ALL  TIMES.
Going in the Path of Righteousness is more than something that is good for us physically, opening our eyes to great secrets needed for existence, and a companion to us through life. It is also something we need and after experiencing a little of it will come to crave after. It is something we were born for.

[Psalms 119:21] THOU HAST REBUKED THE PROUD THAT ARE CURSED, WHICH DO ERR FROM THY COMMANDMENTS.
Departure from the commandments is often a result of pride and arrogance, of an inordinate degree of self-estimation. This is almost inevitable since our worth really does increase the better we become.
THE PROUD. Hebrew "zadim" meaning literally "those who are deliberately evil".
We should watch over ourselves and be careful not to transgress just for the sake of it.

[Psalms 119:22] REMOVE FROM ME REPROACH AND CONTEMPT; FOR I HAVE KEPT THY TESTIMONIES.
We are only human and liable through pride and wrong thinking to make mistakes.  These errors are liable to incur a lowering of esteem in our own eyes and in the eyes of others. We ask God to help us since, despite everything, basically we will have remained faithful and really only want to go forward on the right path.

[Psalms 119:23] PRINCES ALSO DID SIT AND SPEAK AGAINST ME: BUT THY SERVANT DID MEDITATE  IN THY STATUTES.
Great and important people spoke against me but I kept the faith and contemplated the ways of God.

[Psalms 119:24] THY TESTIMONIES ALSO ARE MY DELIGHT AND MY COUNSELLORS.
The testimonies of the existence of the Almighty and of HIS Divine Providence over us and in our lives gives us joy and directs us in the way we need to go.
