Psalms 119-lamed

To Hear a Talk based on the Text below:

(ca. 12 minutes)

Psalm One Hundred and Nineteen (12) Lamed
LAMED
The eight-verses in this section all being with a word in Hebrew whose first letter is "Lamed".
"Lamed" is the equivalent of the English letter "L".
 "Lamed" represents teaching.
A "melamed" is a teacher.
A "talmid" is a student.
To "Lomaed" is to learn.
"Limud" is teaching.
All these words (and there are more like them) are based on the root "LaMeD".

[Psalms 119:89] FOR EVER, O LORD, THY WORD IS SETTLED IN HEAVEN.
God is eternal. The message of God is immortal. Only we change.

[Psalms 119:90] THY FAITHFULNESS IS UNTO ALL GENERATIONS: THOU HAST ESTABLISHED THE EARTH,  AND IT ABIDETH.
Our interest extends over generations. We are interested not only in ourselves but also in previous and future generations.  Perhaps we may atone for past generations and lay up merit for future ones? Perhaps we have eaten up the "capital" of good deeds and righteousness that past generations laid up for us? God is faithful and HE will work things out as we would agree that they be were we to know a little more than we do.

[Psalms 119:91] THEY CONTINUE THIS DAY ACCORDING TO THINE ORDINANCES: FOR ALL ARE THY  SERVANTS.

[Psalms 119:92] UNLESS THY LAW HAD BEEN MY DELIGHTS, I SHOULD THEN HAVE PERISHED IN MINE AFFLICTION.
The Torah can save us. We should learn it and delight in it. This can save us from dark moments and from succumbing to temptations and tribulations.  We should learn to live a Biblical life not only because we are commanded to do so but also because it can gives us pleasure and delight.
If one has to do something in life e.g. one has a job that has to be done and cannot be avoided it helps a lot if get please and exhilaration out of it.

[Psalms 119:93] I WILL NEVER FORGET THY PRECEPTS: FOR WITH THEM THOU HAST QUICKENED ME.
The Laws of the Almighty give us life. This is one of the messages that this present Psalm returns time and time again.

[Psalms 119:94] I AM THINE, SAVE ME: FOR I HAVE SOUGHT THY PRECEPTS.
I belong to God. By seeking to keep the will of the Almighty we make ourselves HIS.
God will help you if you dedicate yourself to HIM.

[Psalms 119:95] THE WICKED HAVE WAITED FOR ME TO DESTROY ME: BUT I WILL CONSIDER THY TESTIMONIES.
CONSIDER. Hebrew "etbonen" i.e. I will meditate upon. By learning the Bible and considering its inner deeper meaning we often realize something about the facts of life. This can gives us the wisdom to avoid being tricked and deceived by wicked people who maliciously seek our undoing. Examples of such evil beasts who lay in prey for the virtuous include vile men who look for a chance to defile a woman they are attracted to or any woman who become vulnerable to them. It also includes good-hearted people who are a little gullible and easily cheated by con men or intimidated by ruffians
Or hundred of other example. Very many of us have enemies lying in wait to harm us and we are not always aware of them. By keeping the Torah and studying the Bible we can avoid our enemies.

[Psalms 119:96] I HAVE SEEN AN END OF ALL PERFECTION: BUT THY COMMANDMENT IS EXCEEDING  BROAD.
This may be paraphrased from the Hebrew:
Everything that requires effort to achieve has an end to it. It can be gained. It is finite. God is infinite and his Bible is also infinite. The more we learn the wider the possibilities become. The depth of understanding achieved through learning the Bible in inexhaustible.
