Psalm One Hundred and Nineteen (13) Mem
MEM
This eight-verse section in the Hebrew Original has each verse beginning with the Hebrew letter MEM.
"Mem" is the equivalent of the letter "M". The theme of this section seems to focus on Contemplation of the Bible, Keeping the Commandments, gaining understanding, refraining from evil, overcoming evil and evil adversaries through virtue of the Torah.
[Psalms 119:97] O HOW I LOVE THY LAW! IT IS MY MEDITATION ALL THE DAY.
[Psalms 119:98] THOU THROUGH THY COMMANDMENTS HAST MADE ME WISER THAN MINE ENEMIES: FOR THEY ARE EVER WITH ME.
The Commandments and the effect of his studying them are always with him. This gives him knowledge and wisdom to overcome his enemies.
[Psalms 119:99] I HAVE MORE UNDERSTANDING THAN ALL MY TEACHERS: FOR THY TESTIMONIES ARE MY MEDITATION.
##HAVE MORE UNDERSTANDING##. This expression in the Hebrew could also be understood to say, "From all my teachers have I learnt". This is how it is usually understood and how it is quoted in the sources.
MY MEDITATION. Hebrew "sicha" also understandeable as meaning "subject of conversation".
[Psalms 119:100] I UNDERSTAND MORE THAN THE ANCIENTS, BECAUSE I KEEP THY PRECEPTS.
# I UNDERSTAND MORE THAN THE ANCIENTS# In the Hebrew "Me-Zekanim Etbonan" i.e. I will contemplate the elders.
[Psalms 119:101] I HAVE REFRAINED MY FEET FROM EVERY EVIL WAY, THAT I MIGHT KEEP THY WORD.
[Psalms 119:102] I HAVE NOT DEPARTED FROM THY JUDGMENTS: FOR THOU HAST TAUGHT ME.
[Psalms 119:103] HOW SWEET ARE THY WORDS UNTO MY TASTE! YEA, SWEETER THAN HONEY TO MY MOUTH!
[Psalms 119:104] THROUGH THY PRECEPTS I GET UNDERSTANDING: THEREFORE I HATE EVERY FALSE WAY.
False ways prevent our understanding. They serve as a barrier. For this reason along (i.e. apart from all the other reasons) he keeps away from the false path.
